Not sure that he is properly "underrated," but you bring up a curious case. Byrne was and is a critic's darling and other actors seems to love working with him. The thing is...he is a bit like a male Michelle Pfieffer: he was delicately beautiful, his style is quiet, he is not "buff" and doesn't do action, and very few of his films made much money. From excellent movies, like MILLER'S CROSSING to hilarious and really fun cult favorites like, STIGMATA and END OF DAYS, the box office (except for THE USUAL SUSPECTS and LITTLE WOMEN) just wasn't there. Also, when his films were fairly successful, he starred in large ensemble groups of actors who competed for career notice. The man is hardly in the poorhouse, I imagine, but I and others would love to see him nail a Star Wars or something later in life and clean up $$ (is anyone listening?). He still looks amazing and as if he has avoided the plastic surgeon, BTW. Still, he is not truly underrated: NO one seems not to admire him. It was lovely that he got IN TREATMENT in his late 50's, where he got to deploy his triple threat: eyes, voice, and hands, to earn a new generation of fans and a Golden Globe. Maybe it is his agent, possibly his scruples (he turned down PATRIOT GAME$ and other $$$ films), but who knows why his career looks so unusual? I have a cool Irish friend in college who was a Bryne nut and he turned us on to VHS tapes of BRACKEN, and I must say that once Byrne is on screen it is impossible to look at, or listen to anything else. He is a really good writer, I have used his memoirs in classes I teach, an activist and he, I guess, seems like a happy man. If you like his work, see the recent LOUDER THEN BOMBS and/or JUST A SIGH. You would enjoy them.
Gabriel Byrne became such a wonderful actor, producer, and author.
He rules!
Beautiful music by the late Noel Kelehan R.I.P.
This makes me so happy :-D
Barney to Madge - "Come on you, come on now" HAHAHA
