    Hey Majorkill,
    First up thankyou for shouting out the Patreon and the channel. Rest assured we are making a dramatic shift in strategy, we are cutting costs, and we are doing what we can to survive. We've made plenty of mistakes, but we are always trying to learn from them.
    There were a few assumptions in the video that weren't correct, such as the idea that the channel had 5 full time employees (it did not) - we would have happily cleared up those details if you'd asked.
    We have products in development, but physical miniatures is an interesting avenue we haven't explored. We definitely should!
    We do have a rather inconsistent channel facing right now, and this is due to our attempts to find some different avenues of content, such as talking, or reaction, but going forward we will be less scattershot in our approach.
    There is no doubt or question that Tabletop Time was built on optimism and enthusiasm, and while they may not be the most solid foundations for a wildly successful business, we would hope we live in a world where being optimistic or aspirational is not seen as laughable, even if it is perhaps a little naive.
    Its clear from the outpouring of love we have received that our videos have impacted many, and shared the love of what we do with many more - And we only hope to continue doing so in the future - It is not hopeless, the goals are not as far away as it feels in this video - The communities support has already gotten us a giant leap towards where we need to be, and from here we can hopefully survive long enough to solidify those other aspects of the business you discuss, products, other avenues of reach, shorts etc.
    ***
    EDIT - We've tried to reply to your reply multiple times, don't know what is going on - So we just wanted to add it in here -
    Absolutely fair - We got lost reading the comments and conflated multiple points people were saying with what you said, and it isnt accurate (and what was said in the comments was not the same as what you said, so we got mixed up there) - No need to discuss it further, we appreciate the spotlight and thats it - Thanks!

      I have full confidence you guys will be able to push through! The passion is there and that is 80% of what it takes to succeed.
      As for my assumptions - 1:44 "The Three Hosts, a part time artist and editor, that's 5 employees, 3 of which would be on a full time salary" this information was taken directly from your video, with the three hosts going part time insinuating that they were previously full time. I never said you had 5 full time employees at any point.
      Let me know if I have missed anything or if any of my assumptions were wrong.
      *edit - if you guys wanna do a gnarly Space Bears physical launch let me know... we would make $$$

      I miss the days when people doing content about their hobbies didn't expect to make a living from it. The production quality isn't even that different... but people expect full time salaries for themselves and editors.
      The minigaming community is so fuckin generous that TabletopTime may even end up surviving off the back of that generosity. If they do, I hope they take that seriously and actually pump out good content at a good pace... but considering their roots, I doubt it.

But I don't know how to do digital transactions.

Even with our combined might, a platform "change of terms" or "change of remuneration rate" can undo half of annual budget, and risk having pipeline shut and some dozens staffer on chopping block. These modern platforms had the supplier on chokehold because the customer are mostly only there. Plus early internet era made people expect "free" content. I've been watching them since Jazza started TTT, and I've also skipped my fair share of videos. It's not that it isn't entertaining, but as MajorKill said, they're all over the place.
      I would have liked to see the whole Sakura Tau army painted, or a full Space Bears army ( I watched all the SB content, that I honestly enjoyed), I loved the thunderhawk they made for SB.
      I think that instead of the mishmash of thumbnails they had, each artist should have had their own unique thumbnails, but that would also be a clear indicator of whose content isn't pulling in the views, since people would just not watch whoever's the flavour of the week I guess.
      They could have also worked with Shadiversity (Jazza's brother) for some of the theory & feasibility on some of the weapons, I think a lore tie-in would be awesome, but that would also give them the opportunity to make actual props, which could then be sold/ auctioned for additional income. They ran this as a hobby update channel, and less of a business, which ultimately cost them, as they didn't do it as hobbyists but as a job. Squidmar is similar, but each video has a very clear goal, and you know what you are in for when you click that thumbnail.
      They also spend more time talking about what/ why they like something, and less time on how to achieve that desired result... that's what kept me from becoming fully invested. PeteTheWargamer, Squidmar and AnotherDayMinitures have an amazing format, because they're painting tutorials first and foremost, and not just geeking out with random stuff.

    One thing about Miniwargaming is that they also have a physical location where you can meet the team and play with them. Not only that, they all have branching channels that feeds into the main one. That and more engagement with the community with narrative wargaming, giveaways and other things and it's little wonder why miniwargaming is so successful. I remember when they first started and the guy to beat was Jawaballs. Also, never rely on youtube for revenue, always have several other things going on.

      I don't really see how you can say Mini wargaming is hugely successful. Not too long ago they were posting videos begging for subscriptions for their paywall platform and giving massive discounts for it and basically saying they might need to downsize or shutdown all together. Now I believe this was before they released Ravaged Star and no doubt that Kickstarter was hugely successful but what is important now is how they will use those funds to keep the money machine churning and keep their heads above water...

      yeah thats a red herring argument. consider that A. it is a nish topic and interest. B. they had pretty much a monopol of that particular interest. C they had enough subscribers to let it go on. what is most likely and more often the case they overrinvest probably stocks in something else that drained the cost. majority of buisnesses goes bankrupt more often because of their overspending on other stuffs that leaves their primary buisness at stake. you grow to fast and overspend that will more often cost your buisness when theres a shift in the economy. this has nothing to do with algorithmic issues, thats just false, when it comes to the so called copystrike or demonitising, also a false problem consider they had overall over a million subscribers which leaves plenty of advertisers and merch sales ongoing. YT primary income is merch. this likely was a bad buisness and advertisement practise on their part. consider you have many different options of revinew that counteracts the demonitise problem

Sure you’ll have to purchase quality of life items such as a good camera, mic, maybe even a couple of editing programs and a room set up, but just like Warhammer minis you only theoretically need to purchase them once in every 4-5 years and then your costs will go down. it can be as low risk as possible and just time and effort editing and can always remain as a passion project if anything else.
    A UA-cam business is like being a modern day farmer it isn’t enough anymore to just be what you are. Farmers have to diversify. They have to open a shop, sell to shops and sell every single resources they can just to stay afloat to do it again the next year except with inflation on top. So do UA-camrs in some respect. This is why every other UA-camr turning UA-cam business sells a shirt, has a Patreon, Onlyfans, a side hustle and always have to ramp up to the next merchandise in order to gain growth or at least maintain. This is why we had a week of Raven Ravens and Corvus love from Majorkill.
    It’s like when a Warhammer gamer wants to open up a shop so all they can do is play tabletop all day. What are your margins? Loss leaders? Logistics costs? Marketing costs? You have to put business before passion when you want to make money.
    I’ve spoken to my local shop the other day and he said that “Warhammer makes little to no money and each model sold makes him 50p.” The only thing keeping him afloat is Pokemon and Magic the Gathering. The point is when he advertises to the local discord it’s mostly Pokemon and card games, as he should to make money. Many in the local WH community don’t like it but he has to put all of his eggs in TCG because he has to make money so them whiny neckbeards can go in the shop corner and still have a place to complain.

    A but more on MWG. They were one of the first tabletop channels. At one point they were the only TTG channel. And even 15 years ago they knew youtube wasn’t sustainable for them, and had their own subscription service, The Vault, and min maxed their content for years! It wasn’t until recently they started to minimize their youtube and expand content again, all while pushing their new printing services.
    In other words, youtube is not sustainable for a “large” TTG channel. I say large meaning a dedicated gaming space with multiple people dedicated to just gaming.

    I loved their content in the early days, but their content kind of... got bland? I love Jen, she is really cool, but her sisters of battle army painting series was kinda boring? Dave's prime time videos usually had okay enough energy and concept, but he was always rather awkward, but not in that charming way? Plus he often would do multiple videos in a "series" that were just applying the same paint scheme to the same army. Which is fine, but not particularly interesting? And Murry... well if I am completely honest, he carried the channel. Almost to the point that I had the thought a while back, why doesn't he strike out on his own? Overall TabletopTime has always felt like it was a friend (Jazza) giving another friend (Dave) a chance at internet fame, oh and the girlfriend (Jen) can come along too. Then it didn't do so hot out the gate, so they brought in a talent (Murry). I have a ton of questions about their video process as well. With three "stars" all capable of producing content, they always seemed to struggle to produce anything regularly.

  • @GrimdarkSandwich
    @GrimdarkSandwich 2 місяці тому +4

    Agree 100%. The costs are way too high for 5 staff members. The one thing I will also add on, if you watch their video, pretty much everything they talk about is what it means to THEM. How much THEY love the job, how much it's been great for THEM and blaming the algorithm - which let's be real is just another word for "Audience".
    It's fine if you just want to make youtube videos based around whatever you want to make. Just don't expect that to end up as a successful or even sustainable business model - especially when you have 5 full-time staff members and only produce 2 videos a week.
    The thing that they need to do, and the thing I would recommend ALL youtuber do - Figure out a way to have a consistent "talking head" series, where you just sit down and record straight to camera. Your lore videos are a great example, Eons of Battle's "Models and memories" is a good example. Every Auspex tactics video is a good example. Think of something you can produce frequently, and regularly with low effort and no cost. If you make that a core part of your channel, it'll extend your run-way on the heavy lifts, letting you focus more time on the "once or twice per month" videos that get you really excited.

    • @Happyjethappy
      @Happyjethappy 2 місяці тому

      Tbh 2 full videos a week is crazy. Theyd be better off doing 4 videos a month on part time basis.

    • @GrimdarkSandwich
      @GrimdarkSandwich 2 місяці тому +1

      That's the kick, you don't make 2 "full" videos a week. You make a full video (maybe) and you make a "News" segment about what's happening in the community and then maybe you do a spotlight video on something - models/indie board games/etc. That's 3 videos a week. You could add a livesteam Q&A or battle report to bring that to 4 no problem.
      What I assume is TTT's problem is that of their 5 full-time staffers, none of them are specialists. So you have a lot of inefficiencies happening. That's fine if you're just out here having fun, but if you want to make youtube your job, you need to dial that in and find the efficiencies. The profit margins are only really good if you're a very large youtuber, or if you keep your costs small - and 5 full-time staffers is a very large staff for a single youtube channel.

    I think one of the biggest issues for them converting YT subscribers into Patreon subs is Jazza.
    I think people assume that he floats the channel from his art channel, rather than being a separate business, and this was never adequately explained.
    I suspect this was also the issue with one of his other child-channels: insert art, which has already shuttered.
    They've done some smart things - splitting off the Roleplay content from the TT content makes sense for not splintering the audience, but maybe that still isn't enough, and their content too broad.

    • @amn1088
      @amn1088 2 місяці тому

      I don't think the broadness if really an issue. Eons of Battle is a really consistent youtube channel that also does hobby content. They have done, 40k, AoS, Kill Team, Mailifaux, Fallout, Star Wars Legion, Deadzone, Smaller Boxed Games and probably way more that I don't even remember. But the thing is their content is incredibly consistent in their style. And even when they do their news talk it still feels the same as watching their regular hobby videos even though no hobby is happening. TTT I have watched here and there and every single video feels like a different channel made it.
      That and its a classic case of they didn't slow grow the business from what I can tell. It seems like they came out the gate with a full crew and tried to wait for revenue to follow. Which is a really tough way to make a successful business, because you run into exactly their issue. They never found their style, never found a formula that worked and years on they are still clearly looking at other creators and trying to figure what will work. And as money starts to run out they are doing even weirder content outside of their wheel house which continues to mess up their algorithm.

Probably part of their problem is Jazza tried to run it like one of his art channels but with a much smaller scope of only wargaming while employing 5 people. With 5 people I'd think it necessary to have side products and use YT as the marketing for those products rather than the other way round of trying to make money off YT itself, Space Bears were cool but they need more of that. I don't think any of them are professional 3D modellers though, I've made some 3D models in my time and if you aren't a pro, it's insanely time consuming.

    I would like them to do more narrative things like with the space bears. More narrative battles with them, more sales towards space bears. That kill team they did was amazing! Same with them making the dawn of war table top. If they made more content like that, I would always be watching them but like you said, they all over the place lately

    I'm going to be honest. With hobbies like these, there are so many alternatives, places where you can get stuff cheaper and now 3d printing etc. It's not a very smart idea to try and start a shop now. The guy running the local game store bought a toy shop because his game store was going well.. I fear that he made a majort mistake. The whole reason that toy store went out of business is because no one buys toys in store anymore. I mean some parents will take their kids there when they take their kids to the mall.. but most parents avoid taking their kids to the mall. They just order whatever toy is popular for whatever price is best online.
    I remember going to a tobacco shop to buy some vape liquid a couple of years ago. And I told the guy I normally don't buy in store because it's cheaper online and I can order until 12 am at night and still get it delivered next day. The guy was like "wow really" .. only when I walked out did I realize the faux pas I made and how rude it was.

    Yeah, I eft a comment on their video on the same line. It's a channel that I have no clue what it's all about other than being a warhammer channel, it's all over the place. it's very typical for creative people to not understand the creation of a conceptual identity and think that it's all about great technique or producing random cool stuff, or worse, just being different for the sake of being different. This mindset leads to inconsistency and makes hard for consumers to know what to expect and therefore won't look for what a creative produces other than maybe a one time thing. it's unquestionable the technical quality they can produce, but when it comes to business identity and concept they are all over the place and very amateurish. Really like you giving them this shout out openly and hope they turn things around.

    Same thing is going on with Zorpazorp. For those of you who havent heard of him, he's a terrain crafter and makes stupidly huge boards. His most notable projects are The Imperial Palace (Set during the siege) that double for LI and 40k, and the White City of Minastirith ( + Osgiliath and the Pellanor).

    You made really good points that kinda hit the nail on the head for me. I just stopped being interested in these projects that just seemed chaotic and rushed and the no physical prints. I would have 100% bought the space bears but I don’t have a printer. It was really disappointing to not have access to that army unless I found an Aussie printer on Etsy doing it. All your points were fair and I really hope they take the advice because I would really love to have them stay and be consistent in their content.

      Its weird I would say their channel is like Eons of Battle if Eons of Battle never found their footing. EoB has an incredibly consistent style, probably because there is just one presenter. They have at least a team of 4-5 with everything they do but they have a thriving patreon that actually gives subscribers thing monthly. TTT always seemed weird to me, it always felt like every video I was watching a completely different youtube channel with just the same people working behind the scenes and many videos felt like the first in a larger series only to never see anything related to that ever again or in a few months maybe. I do think with their team before going part time they should have just taken the blueprint from Squidmar and do a big overarching project with regular videos and updates and then supplement that smaller video projects as well. Whats weird is they have done larger projects but then they always consolidate it into a single video I guess for fear people wont watch the follow ups.
      Frankly I think what they have been doing as a business is looking at every other successful channel doing some of the stuff they are doing for very short periods of time and all at once then trying to evalute if its successful off a small number of videos or even a single video before looking for something else to try. Thats why they are all over the place and failing.
