    One play sums up the entire Mets season. This is how the story goes. On June 17th 1962, "Marvelous" Marv Thorneberry slammed a two run triple. Veteran Ernie Banks threw the ball to first, claiming that Thorneberry forgot to touch first base. The appeal was upheld, and Mets manager Casey Stengel shot out of the dugout. Before he could argue, the umpire said "forget it Casey, he didn't touch second either."

      It's Me Seventy It's simple, they ranked dead last in the AL in runs scored and runs allowed, as well as all of baseball, as they scored 622 and gave up 892, giving them a -270 run differential.

      It was simple in runs scored and allowed. But it resembles the 62 Mets more than the 2003 Tigers where the only guy over 25 of note were about to retire or named Dimitri Young/Rondell White and there was 13 rookies making debuts.

      That’s when I turned it off. I let slide the stupid comment, “you need a time machine to allow for free agency.” And although thge expansion draft was terrible (in 1961, the AL teams broke the rules so many times, that the AL President forms the Angels and Senators to trade with each other to get into compliance), the Angels draft a team that won 70 games in ‘61 and 86 in ‘62.

    The 1962 Mets were awful but I'd say the 2003 Tigers are the REAL worst team in the modern era. This was an already well established franchise that fell 1 game short of the record. What excuse do they have? The Mets were at least an expansion team with nothing in the farm.

    • @Eibarwoman
      @Eibarwoman 5 років тому +7

      That team was the exact opposite of the 1962 Mets in composition. The likes of Cody Ross, Jeremy Bonderman, Mike Maroth, Brandon Inge, Carlos Pena, and Omar Infante had their best seasons 3-5 years later. It was Dmitri Young and a bunch of guys in the early 20s. A team with few veterans and tons of rookies. One of those Tigers in Fernando Rodney is still playing today

      The Yankee fanbase was Manhattan and Bronx while the Giants/Dodgers was Long Island. So there was a long tradition of hating the Yankees on Long Island. We were starving for an alternative to the Yankees, and so we adopted the Mets -- win or lose. The tradition is alive to this day. I listen to every Yankee game, rooting for them to lose. My joy at news of a Mets win is lessened when coupled with news of a Yankee win. I don't feel the same way about the NFL Jet-Giants. The Jets are my team, but I don't root against the Giants.

    Many on their roster were good at one time, or at least good enough to stay in the big leagues for a decade or so. Remember, teams only carried 10 pitchers in those days, so there were more jobs for bench players. Check out Felix Mantilla's numbers. After being thoroughly mediocre since 1956, he tore up the league for the Red Sox for about 3 seasons (limited appearances in 1963, but 133 OPS+). One guy they got before he was good. Must have time traveled 35 years and loaded up on steroids.

    Actually, the pitching staff was competent and their ace pitched well in '62. The reason the team e.r.a. was so high is that the fielding was atrocious. The fielders were either playing out of position (like first baseman Frank Thomas at Third and Outfield), or were too old to field their position any more (Ashburn, Chacon, Mantilla), or they had never been competent in the field (Coleman, Throneberry, Cook, Kanehl), or they had gotten old prematurely (Charlie Neal, who had won a Gold Glove only 3 seasons before). If you take Roger Craig's Stratomatic card and back him with competent fielders, you've got a very effective pitcher. Jackson and Hook were far from awful. Even on a weak hitting team those three should have been 45-45 instead of 26-63.

    Look at the rosters of some of the teams in baseball: a collection of once great players on the downside of their careers and kids who are either forced into roles beyond them or wouldn't even make a club in normal circumstances, and not much in between. The 1942 Phils with Chuck Klein and the '52 Pirates with Ralph Kiner come to mind. Though he remained formidable, there wasn't much beyond Kiner on the latter squad.

    What about the Florida Panthers, Jacksonville Jaguars, or Atlanta United? Hell, the Marlins and Diamondbacks won the world series in their first five years of existence. VGK isn't the only exception, they're just the most recent.
    Cool vid, though.

      yeah, the 1969 Mets team won with pitching, defense, timely hitting and Gil Hodges! you should have seen the managing job Hodges did with the lowly Washington Senators!!! that is why the Mets front office 'rassled' Gil from the Senators!

      Tom Seaver fell into their lap. They stumbled upon Koosman by accident. Nolan Ryan was drafted late because of his early tendency to wildness. Credit Gil Hodges for realizing that Tug McGraw was much more effective as a reliever than a starter. Credit management for trading for Tommie Agee, hoping he could return to the form he had displayed as Rookie of the Year. They drafted Bud Harrelson - the best defensive Shortstop I've ever seen - out of college.

    This is why it's important to cite your sources in the description cause then you yourself would've realized right off the bat you were wrong. This was 5 years ago so hopefully you do that now and it's surprising how many are channels that do sports history are still in the 'trust me bro' era.

    Because the Mets ownership from then to now have been the biggest incompetents in MLB history for many many reasons. Stengal was a clown who was fired from the Yankees for single handedly losing a WS. So the Mets hire him. They've hired only 1 manager who was great. That was Gil Hodges who died at 47. If he lived, the Mets would of been a dynasty in the 1980s instead of a one hit wonder.
    There manager then let that team have constant cocaine fueled parties. Hodges would have never put up with that shit.
    Need proof how bad they are?
    2 WS in 62 years & counting.
    Keep going to that little league ballpark in Queens shanting
    "Let's Go Mets" while sipping on a $18 piss warm beer & chewing on a $15 raw hotdog
    Pathetic!

  • @davemargolis423

    Really sloppy and misleading account of the '62 Mets.
    The front office, knowing the team would not be competitive for several seasons, drafted familiar faces and stars of the past. They hired Casey to manage, but mainly to provide familiarity and entertainment while the team stumbled on the field.
    The result was the New Breed, a nickname for the fan base who came out to the park, regardless of the team's record, to cheer on folk heroes like Marv Throneberry, Rod Kanehl, and Choo Choo Coleman.
    The strategy worked out; the Mets outdrew the Yankees for several years in the mid-60s,
    and won a World Series in '69, years before the Mets expansion-mates in Houston ever reached the post season, although I assume the guy who posted this prefers Houston's draft strategy.

  • @jamesdavis6036
    @jamesdavis6036 9 місяців тому

    Because the manager was a clown already fired from the Yankees for blowing a WS. The front office hired him to put people in the seats & not to win. Some things never change. The worst organization in MLB history.
