Early to mid 2000s racing OC! on Maui and living the life I remember the start of Maliko to harbor downwind and being at the gulch and seeing Kai, who was a legend on the water at that time, and making a mental note to follow him to see how it is he does what he does. I was able to keep up with much effort for about 10 minutes and then poof, he caught a wave and was gone. His ability to read the ocean and effortlessly use it's momentum was astounding to me.
