    Music 2000 (known at MTV Music Generator in some parts of the world ) is a great bit of music making software that launched in 1999. It's well worth a go nowadays if you fancy trying something quite lofi to make beats with. This video will show you how it all works.
    Update: Someone has kindly ripped and uploaded the sample library from this and made them available on the Internet Archive:

    I still have MTV Music Generator complete for PS1 up to this day since early 2000s. I use to love this when I was a kid. I never knew they released it on PC too. So I download the PC version from abandonware website because I don't want to destroy the original PS1 disc. I did remembered I made 10 minute song and saved it to a memory card but it’s long gone in the past. I never knew they made MTV MG 2 and 3. I think this was one of the coolest thing existed on consoles. I did had a radio and blank cassettes back in 2000s. I used a microphone and laid it at the crt tv speakers to record demo disc songs to my cassettes because I didn't have studio materials at the time. I think this software still hold up pretty good.

    Just picked up a PS1 myself for some Wipeout and old school wrestling fun, totally forgot about Music 2000 until I ordered it last night. Imagine my surprise when I looked for a video to refresh my memory and find none other than Chris Lody delivering the goods! I'd have loved to see more in-depth coverage of the video track though, that's what I'll be using it for to start with...

    Jester Interactive has released a PC version of Music2000 which does not have the annoying memory limitations of the PlayStation version. You are given 99 additional tracks to work with. Also, they made Music2002 Slinky Club Edition, however as far as I know, it was exclusively made for the PC. I have uploaded all the demo songs on my channel and made an archive of the program with instructions on how to run it on Windows10. Thanks for creating this video btw.

    ChrisLody very well done my friend!!! Your tutorial along with Coordman's tutorial are the only two I've found which actually provide any real substance in showing the viewer how to use and apply these advanced editing features in their Music 2000/ MTVMG creations. This is a great help to anyone who really wants to go deep into using these advanced features since the ingame instructions don't really explain in detail how to use them...Thanks for sharing your invaluable knowledge on how to use this program my friend. I have subscribed since I'll need to refer back to this often.

    After I’ve trimmed a 1 bar break I always add a loop point at the start of the break, then create an 8 bar riff with a note lasting the whole 8 bars playing the looped break. Then paste a copy of that riff right at the end of the first one. Play it from the start and if you can get the timing to sound pretty good at the point where the 8 bar riff ends and the next one starts then you know that you’re sample trimming and bpm match are tight af!

    I got back into dabbling in DAWs and found out about this. I had no idea the PS2 and PSX had actual, competent music making programs outside of Rhythm games. Finding Music 2000 and 3000 is tough, but I learned those are the PAL versions and instead, the NTSC version is MTV Music Generator series, which you can still find a few copies of here and there (but not many).
    Anyways, I went and head a bought a copy before it was too late. This is a cool find!

    I would make some terrific Ambient and Drum & Bass tracks with this disc back in 2001. The software would occasionally freeze and all my work would be lost. Years later I purchased MTV Music Generator 3 for the PS2 - and although the riffs had a better sound quality, it never felt as intuitive as Music 2000.

    • @ChrisLodyMusic
      @ChrisLodyMusic  3 роки тому +1

      Yes that was my experience of it at times. If I messed around with the sample editor too deeply that could cause some serious problems! Kind of thing that'd get patched now. But mostly I found it to be stable. I had 2 of them on the PS2 but I found them both a bit watered down compared to this

    From this I graduated to FL Studio, which is a very similar workflow. Btw, if you should happen to have memory card files from this game, they're compatible with either version. American saves will work on European copies, and vice versa.

    • @ChrisLodyMusic
      @ChrisLodyMusic  8 місяців тому +1

      Thank you 😁 If you want an image that crisp your best bet is a scart cable. Get a decent one and it will deliver an RGB signal rather than composite video which is fuzzy looking, but the TV has to support RGB over scart for that to work. In theory an S-Video cable should also work but I never had much luck with that. I used a DVD recorder to capture the video then ripped the files from disc to PC mostly because that's the gear I had 😄

    Forgot to mention, Music 2000 came out in 1999. Also running it on a PSP works apart from the delay and echo in the dsp row are glitched. It will load on a PS3 though the audio is completely broken, but runs well enough to rip samples from CD which you can then save to a virtual memory card to transfer over to PSP.

    • @ChrisLodyMusic
      @ChrisLodyMusic  4 роки тому

      There is a headphone output on PSP so you can connect a splitter cable to that. Some PlayStation Ones have phono connectors on the back which you can connect to. The later models don’t but you can still get a phono connection from the video out D terminal with a standard PlayStation video cable or some scart cables. Hope that helps

    • @ChrisLodyMusic
      @ChrisLodyMusic  2 роки тому

      Yeah it's a real shame it doesn't run on PS3 especially considering the amount of storage available. From memory it runs well on PS2 so that should be a good option. Don't know if you've owned one before but PS2 will only save PS1 games to PS1 memory cards so make sure you get some of those too

    • @FightEvilcom
      @FightEvilcom 2 роки тому

      Yeah, I used to play it a lot back in the day on both PS1 and PS2. Right now I'm trying it out on PC... which I doubt will work but would rather that first than having to buy a whole console for it.

  • @Marco-bh9im
    @Marco-bh9im 2 роки тому

    Hi Chris. I play a few instruments and I put together many tracks 20 years ago with music 2000. This thing was awesome! I found some old memory cards the other day but I couldn't find the game and I'm so curious to hear what I had composed back then so I just ordered the game and a ps1 :) I remember there was some really cool complex stuff I did on music 2000 as I'd generally build all from scratch, i.e bassline, chords, drumbeat, with my own original material. And after all these years I'm getting back into playing and would like to record things again.
    Q: Do you think there'd be a way of converting/transferring the raw data/notes to PC to be used with a current DAW? I'm not even using a DAW, just looked at a few but transferring would be so much easier. If there isn't a way of transferring to pc then I'll just have to redo everything from scratch and it's a lot of work but at least I'm able to view the data/notes from music 2000 to see exactly what I did as opposed to listening to something I recorded to a cassette or disc.
    Thanks

    • @ChrisLodyMusic
      @ChrisLodyMusic  2 роки тому +2

      I'd imagine it's stored in some sort of proprietary format to be honest. I know there are devices that can transfer memory cards onto pc though I've never used one. If you managed to get the data onto pc that way you could always use an emulator, but I think the easiest solution would just be to get hold of a copy of the original game for original hardware

    Me and a hood mate of mine have a copy of this and have spent quite a bit of time making some track on it. Does anyone know how we would get this off of the game or memory card and into a PC or something so we could potentially mix it

    • @ChrisLodyMusic
      @ChrisLodyMusic  3 роки тому +1

      The easiest way would be to boot up the songs in the original game and connect the audio from the console to a PC through an audio interface into a DAW like Reaper etc. If you want to be able to record things separately so it could be mixed you could selectively mute tracks and play them in one at once. Adding a click on each track at the start and\or end would enable you to line the parts up easily

    Shame the DIY sampling was based on CDs - a great trick to save memory with the hardware samplers of the era was to sample off vinyl at 45rpm, and then tune things down again in the sampler. I had a S2000 and a cracked copy of cubase so although I liked the idea of Music2000, it was a bit too limited (and clunky) in comparison - even though it’s sample editor was killer!

      Don't know if I mentioned this in the video but on Music 2000 you could sample at 44.1k, 22k and 11k so it is the same trick but in the digital domain. Uses half or quarter of the memory and gives that lofi sound too. I'd love to have a play around with a proper sampler. I don't really count the Volca Sample as you can only add samples to that from a PC or mobile device

    Is there a way to apply the reverb to each track?

    • @ChrisLodyMusic
      @ChrisLodyMusic  3 роки тому +1

      It's an on\off decision to send a note with in a track to the reverb or not that is set up with the note triggers in the per note effects. There's a set of 8 note retriggers that can be red, yellow or black. If they are yellow the note is sent to the reverb.

    The channels are stereo and not monophonic, pan is on the bottom right of the fx area when you are inserting note data in the arranger grid. Sorry mate but Ive been working on it a lot longer and there is a huge bug when saving samples you made off CD too. If you are going to use samples off CD nd the samples all fir on the memory card, save the samples and just put a note of each sample and sound on a block/RIFF
    and save it. Load it up and many samples will have changed places. Now it is safe to make a track, the places wont change again. Hope this helps many Music 2000 music makers

    • @ChrisLodyMusic
      @ChrisLodyMusic  3 роки тому +2

      That's a good tip about DIY samples. I'd seen it do some pretty weird things and wondered why. Thanks for that.
      I didn't misspeak about the tracks being monophonic though. They may be stereo but they can only play one note at once rather than chords which in music tech terms is called monophonic so as not to be confused with mono.

      This was the first comment Ive came across where someone besides myself knew that you could sample from CDs. My favorite BPM to make beats was 170 because I could then make a more organic, non quantized beat sound just a slight off tempo. Another thing I discovered was that because the Playstation 2 was backwards compatible, the PS2 gave more space so you could make more CD sampled music.

    • @DanielReidTheEditor0

      @@ChrisLodyMusic oh that kind of monophonic yes I see now what you mean, each note cuts off the last note in that mode of course.

    I have a SCPH1001 playstation ("hifi" with the stereo out) and the American version of this, MTV Music Generator. Did have Music 2000 but the disc got trashed.
    This runs on a PS1 emulator on a relatively old android perfectly by the way, in case anyone is wondering.
