✌This song uses music to emulate what it sounds like when you turn the radio knob looking for a song to land on. In the beginning, after the radio wave static guitar intro, when the bass and drums come in, they're turning the radio knob. At 5:57, they do it again and land on a reggae station. It's fucking brilliant. The More You Know 🌠
Hi Xee - You are dipping your toes in here - Xanadu live is excellent and Spirit of Radio is a bit of a concession, without surrendering, to the business of music. You have likely been informed by long-time fans that Rush really is more than just a band to us. My personal history is that I started actually "listening" to music when my older sister gave me Led Zeppelin IV for my 13th birthday in 1978. I had appreciated Rush, but never bought an album until Moving Pictures in 1981. Even then, I didn't appreciate them enough until after I saw them live in 1986 (I saw them twice more, the last time in 2004). I have been to dozens of concerts, Fleetwood Mac, U2, The Police, Yes, Styx, Steely Dan, Dire Straits - All are great, but there was a personal connection as a young man with this band and these lyrics. Also, out of all these superstar bands, Rush felt like three guys from the neighborhood who happen to be great musicians that played together. So much to say, but a defining component within the band is Neil Peart's writing. I know you are getting into the music here, and there is much to discuss on that front, but these guys, and their almost 50 year career of living and working in public represent an important component within the fabric of the fan's lives through the years. Neil has written several books, I've read 3. Contemplations and reflections on life, loss and incredible professional success through the eyes of an introvert is interesting and helpful to those searching.
It's cool to see Rush newbies - especially younglings - discover their music for the first time. I'm 55, and this song was new when i was like 11! By the time i was 12 i was a full-blown Rush nerd! Their music has been a huge part of my life from that time on, as I'm certain it has been for countless other people pretty much everywhere! 😎 🙏
Please review Rush 2112 overtures it's a story in 7 pieces with comic visuals. From there earlier albums back in the 70's. 3 man band from Toronto Canada. Geddy Lee singer, bassist and keyboards,Alex Lifeson guitarist,Drummer Neil Peart. Best Band Ever. Rush is Timeless.
In general, Neil Peart (the drummer) writes the lyrics for the band while Geddy Lee (bass, keyboards, and vocals) along with Alex Lifeson (guitar, Moog pedals, and backing vocals) write the music. Neil wrote this song about CFNY which was a Toronto FM radio station whose tagline was "The Spirit of Radio" and was a bit of old-school holdout in terms of their free-form radio format as opposed to the more commercial direction that mainstream FM was headed. That is why there are references to "glittering prizes and endless compromises" as well as salesmen who sell advertising for the radio stations. Neil felt it was all a money grab and a departure from artistic integrity.
The Garden Live from either the 2012 or 2015 tour! Spectacular song by the awesome trio! Great reaction!
Great comments!! RIP Neil Peart. 😊 sure miss him and the band. 😢
This song was a critique of the radio business.
Lots of music Galore! 😊

The entire Permanent Waves record that this song is from is incredible, next try Freewill, Natural Science or Jacobs Ladder off the same album. 😊
Sometimes it's best to just listen first. Long days at work and hanging out with friends and the radio.

Glad you enjoyed these amazing musicians. Looking forward to more Rush on the channel.
keep the journey alive so much more to discover...........
IMO their 70's catalogue is their finest. see 4 yourself don't take my word.
Great job👊🏽⚡️RIP master Pert🫡 Rush is perfect driving music. The songs take you away. Pure art,
In the 1980 pro tools was non existence, multi track recording was in it’s infancy so layering was not easy to do
RUSH definitely takes you on a ride! "The Analog Kid" is a must listen!!!☮

I think you would enjoy the following: Subdivisions, Freewill, Tom Sawyer, YYZ (live in Rio), The Garden (live from the Clockwork Angels Tour).
Next up: Pink Floyd "Comfortably Numb". One of the greatest songs ever laid down. 1979. You will love it.
Try Limelight , or Free will Video or Tom Sawer video next,
always use the live concert videos, not the studio videos.
Rush is the best band ever....and does *not* deserve to be "reacted" to by some twit that mutilates everything.
