- A new film by Alexander Payne, director of SIDEWAYS and THE DESCENDANTS. Paul Giamatti stars in THE HOLDOVERS, Now Playing in Theaters Everywhere.
From acclaimed director Alexander Payne, THE HOLDOVERS follows a curmudgeonly instructor (Paul Giamatti) at a New England prep school who is forced to remain on campus during Christmas break to babysit the handful of students with nowhere to go. Eventually he forms an unlikely bond with one of them -- a damaged, brainy troublemaker (newcomer Dominic Sessa) -- and with the school’s head cook, who has just lost a son in Vietnam (Da’Vine Joy Randolph).

One of my favorite things about this scene is how the primary characters utilize the opportunity. They could have gone home disappointed, but they work together to make this moment really fun. Life has so many imperfections, but it’s what you do to combat the challenges that make it more rewarding, enjoyable and fun. This is such a good movie!
I definitely liked this movie. I still think Oppenheimer was the best film of 2023
Very well said sir
I thought I was sick of movies. It’s so refreshing to see a real movie about real people just getting through life. Also the cinematography was excellent. All those cozy houses and shops made me feel almost homesick.
Agreed. Hopefully Hollywood takes note and starts making more of these movies
@@jjgreen5206Trust me… it’s an Alexander Payne thing (probably my favorite director lol) but you’re right… hopefully more directors realize people want this more than ever right now
I don't know why but I was deeply moved by the way they put in effort to give their own version of this dessert for him.
Don’t know why I crack up when she calls her a bitch lol she delivered that line so well
Ditto 🤣🤣 she was divine (pun intended) in this film.
This whole trio was *chef's kiss*
It was so natural. She was not having it with this waitress! You go, Mary!!!!!❤❤❤
That teamwork at the end - Hunham with the Jim Beam, Mary with the lighter and Angus with the spoons he stole hahaha.
I normally don't laugh at swearing but the way Mary says "Bitch" is bwa-ha funny 😂😂😂
just saw it today! Absolutely loved it!
I’m seeing it tonight
I saw it last week and was amazed how good it is. The characters played off each other brilliantly, propelling them to a whole new level while bringing us in. Dom Sessa was excellent & may hear his name announced this week. We'll definitely hear Paul & Davine being announced as well. I urge you to go see this movie of a friendship that forms when you're considered a "HOLDOVER"
Best Christmas film in over a decade
This movie really refreshing back my soul..reminds me the real life is so beautiful..
Paul is one of a few real artisan actors. I love him❤
“Christ on a crutch! What kind of a facist hash foundry are you running here?!?” 🤣🤣🤣🤣 the writing and the delivery…just impeccable 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I'm stuck at home sick for three whole week and that line made me laugh so hard I cried
This movie has made my annual holiday movie list!
My favorite film of 2023. Wish I saw it in the cinema! Thank you to everyone involved for giving us a new Christmas classic.
People are sick of the Marvel movies and the edgy BS. They want real. They want talented actors and actresses, great writing and interesting storylines. Edgy, dark, violent and shocking doesn’t equal good. Most often those movies are common, cheap and boring. Great job by the actors, producers and writers of Holdovers. A retro but still fresh plotline and great movie
His little “It’s my birthday!” made me laugh ridiculously hard.
Maybe it just reminded me of the dialogue from Freddy Got Fingered… “Would you like a piece of birthday cake?” “Yes sir, it’s my birthday!”
Favorite movie of the year. Alexander Payne may have made a movie even better than Sideways!
Not quite as entertaining as Sideways. But still very good
Preferred Election, though I know most go Sideways.
Mine too!
The Descendents was better than Sideways. And The Hangovers is in between.

I hope they take note from the ratings, popularity and awards and make more dramatic films like this. Great actors, compelling storytelling with a vintage quality. Chef’s kiss
“Christ on a crutch” is one of the best phrases I’ve heard in a while!
“Desecrated cockroach assholes” is my favorite line for some reason.😂😂😂
i think this is my favorite scene from the movie, just so heartwarming
This is such a cute scene
I loveeee this scene. I think about it every day
Age appropriate dessert….that’s a new one.
I LOVE ❤️ this movie!
Amazing movie. Saw it last night
Such an amazing movie!
If I were the waitress, I would have been like "Okay fine but if anyone asks, I didn't give it to you."
So many quotes! Fantastic film❤❤❤ I predict T shirt overload
This scene was in Waltham, Mass. at The Chateau rest. a great Italian rest.
I loved it
The look of defeat on the waitress' face.
great movie
Don't be out here making me cry again!
Check out the big bottle of MERLOT on the edge of the table at 0.43 seconds in :)
Eeeeyyy. Nice Sideways reference.
Hahaha, could be a way to make up for the fact that Merlot sales plummeted after Sideways came out.
Why didn’t Paul just initially order it under the guise it was for himself ? LOL
Loved it!
miss them baddddddd
i miss them ❤❤❤❤❤
A delightful desert is paramount! They really put that middle-aged waitress in her place!
I want to be friends with all of these people, now.
I want to see this movie
I mean come on what part of it’s against the rules they understand? 😂😂😂
Honestly I still think Cillian Murphy will win the Oscar for Oppenheimer but I’d be totally fine with Paul Giamatti getting instead for this film, The Holdovers was for me the surprise film this year, didn’t think much of it when the first trailer came out but I saw it last week and it has still stuck with me. Great movie through and through. Top 3-4 of the year for me.
1. Poor Things
2. Killers of the Flower Moon
3. The Holdovers
4. Oppenheimer
5. The Killer
Paul Giamatti just won the Critics Choice Award beating out Murphy. If Giamatti wins the upcoming Screen Actors Guild award then he will be a lock for the Oscar
Just a lot of great people for best actor!
@@sarahbglnCillian Murphy won the Screen Actors Guild Award
It looks good
:44 Easter Egg - Merlot! Also note a problematic waitress encounter -- remember Cami in Sideways? Always good dining scenes in these films.
Instant classic
What a great scene! lmao
1:14-1:24 The theatre went nuts 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Did they try ordering the brown sugar salmon?
"R u trying to look down my shirt?"...
"R u discriminating against my sexual orientation?"
i miss them a bit
That’s Marty Wolf from director to now teacher
What's the title of the song that comes on at 1:46?
I don’t know, but it’s either by Cat Stevens or Nick Drake.
It’s ‘No Matter What’ by Badfinger (released 1970). Great song.
I'm not with calling the waitress a bitch. They are not allowed to serve alcohol to minors. She was just doing her job. Paul Giamatti's character could have ordered the cherry jubilee without making the "we'll share" comment. Nobody would have noticed if they did.
I would agree if the movie wasn’t set in the 70’s
It's just a movie
@@thepooch2476True, but wasn’t 18 the minimum drinking age in some states before 21 became the federal law in 1984?
Just wish it was not R rated. Could have been a good family film
It's R rated what's in it that makes it so!!
@@michellebermingham2350Mainly the swearing and drug use as listed in the MPA rating
Wasn’t there a movie identical to this already released ?
Not sure the exact movie you're thinking of but I do know The Holdovers succeeded where Licorice Pizza failed
@MagicCarpetRideShareProject it's the only recent movie that I thought of when I saw the holdovers trailer...it's more strawberries and blueberries to me.
@@angelika87licorice pizza didn’t fail at all
😂❤
👀
You boar 😂
Boor
What the hell? The lady was just doing her job.
You’d be more forgiving if you see the movie
Well she could have easily given it to the adults and if they shared it, then only the adults , and not the waitress, would have been taking full accountability. After all , adults have the right to order whatever they want
In a cherries jubilee, the alcohol always burns. All that's left is flavor.
The teacher and the cook make a very good point.
G-damm...what would American cinema do without its loveable Black "caretakers"...? Jes cant do without her In the 21st century, Aunt Mary Lamb has become just such a Tiresome trope no matter how well it's played. And that's part of the problem, Black female actors perform these roles "too well"----- hence another Hattie McDaniel Supporting Actress Award !
the waitress was just following rules. unrealistic as always. that's a movie for you. nothing to do with real life
This scene turned me off as much as the waitress scene in "Five Easy Pieces". The waitress was just doing her job. She would get in trouble if she served an underage kid brandy, or if she knew that an adult had said out loud that he was going to share it with him (something which is very inconsiderate for the adult to say right in front of her). "Punching down" is not funny. I'll take a pass on this movie.
This isn’t a bad movie at all, it’s quite funny and heartfelt
Sorry that a brief interaction with a couple of characters in a scene (designed to provoke an audience emotion and reaction) dictated if you would watch the movie.
Where is this school where all the boys have girl hair first thing in the morning? Fascinating how hollywood is turning boys into girls right before our very eyes! Or am I missing them mysteriously in the real world? Is this to draw in tween girl viewers to an R rated film? Then there's the cafeteria lady with the hollywood extension bun??? what year is it supposed to be, because that old TV tells me it's before black women ditched their real hair... WTF And this has how many nominations? ILMAO
I was bored after 15 minutes and turned it off. I fell asleep multiple times watching Oppenheimer as well. I guess boring movies win awards.
