this is one of those ''realistic situation'' horror movies that just fucks me up.
the callousness towards the couple's murder at the end, and the depiction of the reality that there doesn't necessarily need to be a reason for violence, is genuinely gut wrenching.
This movie and the Saw and Hostle movies mess with me becuase if someone really wanted to they could do all that.

I love all kinds of horror movies but this one is especially creepy because it's something that can actually happen to you. Also the fact that the strangers identities or motive is never explained is what makes this so damn spooky. A must watch on every Halloween.

The sequel is really good too. There's also a movie called Hush that's basically the same premise but it's only one girl being stalked and one stalker and the girl being stalked is deaf.

Yes!!! I didn't like the sequal as much as this one?!! BUT I thought it was a worth while watch!!! AND NO ONE liked the sequal when it first came out ... got railed by critics and movie goers alike
This movie was actually filmed in my hometown. Honestly the house they shot it in is very similar to a lot of family homes or friends houses. The worst part of living out in the country is the fact that no one is around or your nearest neighbor is maybe 10 minutes away. Definitely made me a little security conscious as I got older because of similar things that happened.

Fun fact there's a trope in horror movies that you JUST HAVE TO MAKE IT THROUGH THE NIGHT but in this movie the killers purposely wait for morning and light to further show the victims how hopeless there situation really is my God what an amazing movie 💯
Probably the most relatable horror film. To die for no reason other than you answered the door is a frightening thought, especially since crimes like that happen way too often.
Never open the door to people you don't know ! Especially if you hear. Knock on your front door and no one is there. You just invited evil both ways
When my mom and aunts were teenagers they once heard a noise at their bedroom window on the second floor. When they moved the curtain, there was a man in the window watching them on a ladder. He ran and they never caught him.
Safe to say my mom refused to even watch the trailer for this movie when it was coming out in theaters.
Sounds like a peeping Tom. That is so terrifying. Are they still haunted by the experience? Did they ever find out who? A lot of the times these creeps have done it multiple times and stalk u knowing ur schedule and who lives at home. Sometimes it’s someone u know.

I know Nikki is absolutely terrified but her constant grabbing and slapping of Steven’s arm whilst he reassures her he would never leave her alone in the house is one of the sweetest things I have seen.
The movie is genius in that it plays on that uneasy feeling you get that there is someone watching you but you don't know where. Also, the idea that people can just go and do these things just for the hell of it is even more terrifying.
One of favorites, this film was inspired by a real-life incident that happened to the director where somebody actually knocked at his door and asked if somebody name was home, he eventually found out that there were home robberies occurring in his neighborhood after this incident, and it's also inspired by the Manson murders from back then. It is a well-directed film that plays on the creepiness of these killers and to me the most horrifying thing is that there's no reason besides the enjoyment or amusement this group gets off by terrorizing and scaring our main characters until they are just bored of it decided to finally end it by just killing them because they can

Man... this might be one of the few times where Nikki got THAT tensed up. Can't say I blame her.
It's been a long while since I last saw this movie and it still does an amazing job of building suspense and tension.
It gives you chills when it needs to. The look on Steven's face waiting for the slaps to his arm was priceless and I was not disappointed LOL.
What makes this movie so terrifying is how realistic the situation is. I mean this could happen to anyone and probably already has.
The cure for that is to watch Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. 😉

I used to LOVE scary movies. This was the scary movie that broke me. I lived alone at the time and my bf lived on the other side of town. We went to see this at the theater. It was a weeknight and he works construction and has to be up super early so we both went to out own apartments that night. I went to sleep and woke up and saw that man standing in my bedroom doorway. It was a dream but it seemed real. I was TERRIFIED. I called him at 2am cuz I was so scared. He was pissed and said we weren’t going to see anymore scary movies. We haven’t. It took me years to be able to watch scary movies again but I won’t watch them at night. I’ve never been scared to live alone but now I am, like I said…this move broke me.
Apparently this story was inspired by an experience the director had as a kid. Someone came to his house asking for someone who didn’t live there, and the next day or so, other houses in his neighborhood had been broken into.
I thought I remember reading it was based on the Manson murders but I saw this years ago.
@@cstaszko9927 are you talking about the Charlie Manson movie star home invasion? yeah I think he had influences from many things. His personal childhood experiences and serial killer related events. Anything that can happen in real life is so scary. Intruders is my number one fear 😂
I saw this in theaters when it first came out in the theater in 2008. Great experience and the sound design is amazing. So sad when the husband accidentally kills his friend.
Another great one with a similar feel is Mike Flanagan's HUSH. A fantastic cat and mouse with Kate Siegal from MIDNIGHT MASS giving a hell of a lead performance.
This movie was genuinely the most terrifying movie I ever saw when I saw it in theaters when it came I never want to be home alone again at night time and this most messed up lines are the entire "because you were home"
One of the most scariest movies I ever seen. Was in 8th grade when I seen this in theaters. The whole crowd was terrified.
You got it right..."The simple because you were home" as a reason for the whole ordeal is terrifying, much more creepy than if there was an actual reason, it's just random cruelty and being totally unlucky

The shot where the killer is behind her and she is just doing her thing, smoking and drinking water...one of the best tense chilling moments in a horror movie ever! And NOTHING else happens in that scene, he just disappears! =)
In the sequel, it's a mom and dad and their two kids as the main characters.
I saw this in the theater when it came out and it was one of the most terrifying and amazing experiences ever. It was one of those movies where you felt like you were one with every person in the theater because we were all going through it TOGETHER. When you first see the man stranger appear and just look at Kristen - it was like a sound wave making its way across the theater because the bottom left portion of the audience noticed it before everyone else. Everyone screamed/gasped. It was awesome.
I forgot Glenn Howerton was in this. I can't see him as anything but Dennis from It's Always Sunny at this point. Even when he was in the Fargo tv series.

This movie is defenetly the most terrifying one I’ve ever seen and that’s Why it is my all time favorite horror movie. Yeah other horror movies that are inspired by true cases are scary too but this one unlike the paranormal movies is something that can happen to anyone. Plus the shots in the movie are so good and creepy, the masky are not anything special yet very scary and even tho there are not many deaths it is still really scary movie and the fact that the killers are just playing with them before they kill them for reason just becose they were home is truely terrifying. Love this underrated movie.
That man's mask gave me nightmares for weeks. Even now over 10 years later, seeing that white smirk gives me chills.

The director based this movie off of real break-ins that occurred in his neighborhood along with the Manson family Tate murders. There’s also some similarities between this and the Keddie cabin murders
I remember watching this and being absolutely paranoid for a while. It's such a big fear of mine and even though I live way outside the city where I assumed nothing ever happens, there was a B&E last month in a little café and luckily they only took money but how do you sleep at night after someone has been literally in your "safe" home?
The scary thing about this movie is how the strangers were clearly having a blast and it seemed like a game to them. The terror of being chased and fearing for your life for so long just to end up being killed (more like tortured) for their satisfaction is horrifying.
According to director Bryan Bertino, the film is partially based on an incident he experienced as a child. One evening a stranger came to his door, asked for someone who was not there and left. Later, Bertino found out that other homes in his neighborhood had been broken into that night.
The first time I watched this movie was with my cousin when I was a freshman in high school. We watched it in the living room with 2 story high ceilings and windows all around the room. It was horrifying to say the least. The fact that this movie is so realistic adds that extra layer of primal fear that few movies can pull off. Proud of Nikki for seeing this one through!

One of my fav horror movies for sure. The simplicity made it all the more realistic. “Cause you were home” we always send shivers down my spine!
My step dad asked my mum 11 times to marry her before she agreed. She always said that she needed no paper to tell her he loved her she knew it. They got married last year in July before cancer took her in December and she would never say "til death do us part" because it would take alot more than that to stop her from loving him.

This movie terrified me when I first saw it and haven't watched it since. I have a fear of being home by myself during the night. I can be home alone during the day but night scares me the most. Nikki, the worst fear I had in my life is your doorbell ringing at 3am. Waking up to that is most terrifying. It was just neighborhood kids playing around and being stupid but that was the scariest thing in my life. I didn't even go to bed the following night because I was so terrified. The kids are older now. I feel you Nikki.

This movie is great, one of my all time favorites. It reminds me a bit of Vacancy with Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsale. Creepy af. But Strangers is just on another level. Awesome reaction!

Liv Tyler crushes it in this film, but I also give mad props to Gemma Ward (ironically, famous for her face) who, despite having like 5 lines, remains this constantly eerie and menacing presence through the film.

I do like the taking off the masks part as it means two things, showing real faces to them is because it's their way of saying we already won sense they are all tied up basically no way out and secondly once they have been seen by the victims it literally gives them a actual reason to finish them off to keep identity secret.

This movie horrified me. I saw it when I was like 10 with some friends because his parents rented it or bought it and left the dvd out and we watched it in his house out in the middle of the country when his parents were gone 😂. When it was over we all just kinda laid down on the floor and tried to sleep. I haven’t seen it since.
I remember buying this movie back when it first hit DVD, and watching it that very night. I had a horrible cold at the time, so I took some nyquil before watching it. I regretted that almost immediately. This movie freaked me out more than ever, and had some nightmares that evening. I rewatched it a few days later when I was feeling much better, and I was still scared. The Strangers is one of the scariest horror films that I've ever seen. It still scares me to this day, and I've probably seen this movie at least twenty times since I purchased the DVD back when it was first released. The sequel was awesome as well.

I still never answer the door when I'm home alone. Saw this movie for the first time when I was 10 because my brother played it and I have always made sure since then to make it seem like no one is here when I'm alone and turn on the alarm

What’s so terrifying about this movie is it’s not something that’s like fake or couldn’t likely happen to you. It’s a totally possible situation. Just absolutely brutal .
I remember studying drama at school and we had to make up a play of our version of horror in front of an audiance and this movie gave us an insight of what kind of ideas we might come up with. This movie reflects on that a Home Invasion can happen to anyone. It's based on the Charles Manson murders and other crimes. I'm not someone who usually likes horror films but this is probably the only one I liked.
I dont really get scared from scary movies but this movie is terrifying. Its one of those where after you finish you check your locks and windows and sleep with the light on. This is way scarier than something supernatural
You guys need to react to the 2009 remake of "The Last House on the Left". It is, in my opinion, one of the most difficult films to sit through... and as much as I hate to admit it, one of the BEST remakes ever done. Everyone in this film was brilliantly cast and it is horrific to watch.
Bro, this movie is one of my favorite horror and home invasion films. It's crazy how this whole mystery behind the strangers is never explained and that's what makes it good and interesting. The final scene with the three of them framed together and the response of “Because you were home” is too bizarre!
The reason it's the scariest movie is because of the possibility it could really happen to any of us. It just takes some psycho seeing you one day. They say we have the feelings that you can tell you're being watched but do we really? I think the scariest is the thought of you walking around your house and then suddenly seeing someone right in front of you when you have no weapon or reaction time.
I'm a horror movie fanatic. Silent films, b&w, Universal from the 30's and 40's. Sci fi of the 50's, Hammer films, 60's, slashers, possessions, satanics, 70's 80's, 90's. Gore, no gore, all of it.

This movie is loosely based on the keddie cabin murders that took place in keddie California in the 80s. A mother, her son & daughter and her son's friend were all brutally murdered in their cabin one night. If you're into true crime you should check it out. Also, the scene where the girl knocks on the door asking if Tamara is home is based on the director's experience he had as a child where someone came to his door asking that exact question and when his dad said no-one by that name was there she just walked away. The next morning the family found their porch light had been unscrewed and one of their neighbors had suffered a home invasion but survived.
The sound design is a huge reason I love this movie. The songs from the record player paired whth the scenes still freak me the fuck out over ten years later.

The sequel was just as good as the 1st one. It even had the son of Bill Pullman too. And, they really butchered Bonnie Tyler's infamous hit song in one scene in a good way!! Go see that.

I agree. I loved the sequel. Seemed at first like it would be a copy/paste of the first, but it was surprisingly different in the last half. Super entertaining. I think the two movies make for a great double feature.

You should check out a film called "Funny Games" (the original 1997 version, or the 2007 remake), which I'd say that this is quite heavily inspired by.

Some of the scariest movies are based on actual events. This world is more horrifying than any movie imagery could ever make up. There's a strangers 2 & 3 in case you wanted to watch those.

My family once rented a house in a very closely constructed neighbourhood, so it felt safe. One day I skipped school cuz I got a fever. The house had not many rooms so I slept in the living room and my mom was in the kitchen. I was wearing my earphones and listening to some music to sleep better so I couldn’t hear anything plus it was raining outside. Idk how long I was sleeping but when I opened my eyes, a freaking woman, a stranger, who looked like she was mad, her hair messy, looking down at me (I was sleeping on a mattress on the living floor - just cuz yk) and said something but I couldn’t hear her over the rain and song still playing through my earphones. I was too stunned and shocked that I just stared at her with my eyes no doubt bulging like crazy, and watched her proceeded to walk to the kitchen. Then I heard my mom’s voice, angry and loud asking the woman, “Who are you? How did you get in?” followed with “Get out!” . She walked out but still so slow, as though she didn’t just break into our house in the first place. When she was gone I got scolded by my mom for not realising that woman entering the house, tbh it was partially my fault but I was too weak cuz of my fever and I was pretty sure the woman must’ve sneaked in quietly for me not to notice. I am a light sleeper, it doesn’t matter if I use earphones or anything I always get up instantly with the slightest movement, so that really scared the shit outta me. I asked my mom who she was and why she was here, apparently she was the Indonesian lady who rented just three houses away from ours and thought her husband cheated on her and believed that they were cheating on her in our home. I guessed she wanted to catch him on the act but all she did was scare the living outta me and my mom, broke in, but personally for me the worst was when she was watching me sleeping. I still remember waking up to her standing by my feet, looking down with this crazed look on her face. Since then I got a habit on closing and locking doors behind me.
You guys should really react to Evil Dead (2013)! One of the best movies for reactions in my opinion. Definitely lots of insane stuff to react to😂

Like I've seen this movie probably 4 times and I know how it ends and you wish for the couple to survive the night, to escape but in the end they die and thats the sad but hard, cold truth of reality because not everyone gets to live, this happens in real life not everyone gets a happy ending, you see in some horror,slasher movies and some have happy endings which is great it's what you want to expect.
But there's a difference with expections vs reality.

This movie scares people so much because it feels so real, a lot of people fear home invasion and this is so close to what we all imagine as a worst-case scenario.
