Christmas Costuming Crisis at the Circus - Sewing a New Costume in Rehearsals!

  • Join me as I panic sew a new costume for opening night WHILE in the middle of day-long rehearsals for the very same show! Let the race against the clock begin 😊
    Have we known that we were going to be doing this contract since mid-summer? Yes. Did they give us the seal of approval to wear our own costumes for the show? Also yes. Then how on Earth did I wind up juggling day-long rehearsals with panic sewing for our opening night? .... you'll have to watch to find out 🤣
    I want to be very clear about something, though, that maybe didn't come across as strongly in the video as in real life: the company we're working for made it clear that our comfort and safety was priority #1, that we could use our own costumes if we weren't comfortable with their options, and that they would like to continue to explore options to more fully integrate us aesthetically into the show, but that the most important thing was our safety (and we appreciated that)!!
    If you want to come see the show in person, and you happen to be in one of the following cities between now and December 31, feel free to message me on Instagram or email me for more show details. I also have the show info saved as a Highlight on my IG.

      I love the travel style of crafting from this video! It's not a production, it's an exact view of what you accomplished under the circumstances you had to deal with. And that makes this video perfect in an imperfect way, as it should be!

    • @dawsie
      @dawsie 7 місяців тому +17

      I understood that, considering how you are held with just one arm at one point, knowing your costume would be priority one, you know how your vests are made you know they will standup to the task in your act, wearing someone else’s vest be it commercially bought or made by wardrobe you would always have a niggling doubt in the back of your mind.
      I have a cousin who does figure skating she used a costume once made commercially and it nearly cost her career in figure skating as it failed. All her costumes she either makes or my Aunt makes for her. She was laid up for 8 months after the costume did exactly as you showed, it bagged out when her partner lifted her up over his head, she broke her leg and he broke his arm now both of their costumes are made in house as we say. One side had not been made correctly whereas the other side had been. It took just a split second as her costume split ripped and dumped her and her partner down on the ice and because of the way they do the lift, his arm has to lock in place at the elbows to maintain the lift, because of this he could not even react and release in-time as her body slid down that arm they were both a mess. They were just glad that it happened in the dress rehearsal and not in front of the judges and audience as the audience would have been just as traumatised by it as they had been. It was over a year before they were confident enough to get back into the competition circuit.

      Please don't apologize. This was an enjoyable race against time video. Haven't all crafters/makers had a time in our lives when we finished a project well yet in the nick of time?

    In which Shannon accidentally demonstrates how you can sew with minimal equipment (cans as weights, rolled towel as ham) and time. Great job! Also, the video is great! 🥰"Perfection is the enemy of good."

    I thought this came out great. Honestly, I don't think a more "polished" presentation would have caught the urgency of the situation so well. And it was urgent! Holy cannoli, putting a vest together so fast while involved in time-consuming and strenuous rehearsals is amazing.
    It was also fascinating to learn just what can go into costuming decisions for your act.

    I loved this video, despite (or because of) the so-called flaws. I am a fan of having a mix of behind-the-scenes/slice-of-life type vlogs along with the more polished content, since it offers a consented peek into a world/lifestyle/reality that I would never get to otherwise experience. The filming challenges just become a part of that IRL experience

    Pro tip - most hotels have laundry facilities for long term guests. If they don't, they will have machines for their own use (laundering the bed linens and towels). If they don't have guest facilities, management may allow you to use their laundry in an extreme (and interesting) case such as this. Just so you're aware. I get it that the time was SUPER tight and it didn't necessarily matter in the long run, but if it ever does matter, now you know!
    Love this video - I hope you get a troupe seamstress pay allotment! You saved their butts!

    • @ShannonMakes
      @ShannonMakes  7 місяців тому +1

      Thank you! Yes, most hotels have laundry, but that would have delayed me almost a full day (remember that I had to be at rehearsals every day, for the vast majority of the day, so even if I could get the fabric in, I couldn't get it out, then into the dryer, then out again in a timely manner), and also, since it's 100% polyester, it almost certainly wouldn't have shrunk AND I have had very mixed results with hotel machines... but I do appreciate your comment and concern! Just made a call in the moment about what was best in my circumstances

      In a community theater production of "The Curious Savage," as the only person who could sew in the group, I had to quickly make a cocktail dress for a character who was onstage for only a few seconds. They'd ordered a lovely dress for her and it turned out to be made of crinkly gold PLASTIC. Not exactly what we wanted for the production.

    I was a touring puppeteer in a two-person production of The Reluctant Dragon (17 foot, smoke breathing dragon and everything), in which my puppeteering partner and I were both live-action characters, dressed as medieval peasants, as well as the puppeting the puppets. One show we did, I left my costume behind and didn't realize until we were 2 hours in to a 5 hour drive to do a school show the next morning so we stopped off at, I think a Wal*Mart is what we found, and I cobbled together what I could in the motel room that night, sans sewing machine. It was definitely a "nobody get too close to me and see what this costume really looks like" kind of situation. You brought back a fun memory!

    Re: the contract, you *demonstrated* how they were as a client when you showed they gave you access to the wardrobe's sewing machines, and just that when you said, "that's not going to work, I'm making my own" and they just let you get on with it.
    Having said that, I really hope someone was suitably impressed: "AND they can make their own costumes on the fly if there's nothing in wardrobe already!"

    I LOVED this video! it was so much fun to see a less polished Shannon. I love your normal videos too, but I love this sort of spontaneous fly by the seat of your pants thrown in every now and then. It shows that things don't always go as planned, but we make the best of what we have, and it's ok. I'm so glad you released this. I was super fun to watch, and also very interesting to see behind the curtain so to speak, as to how your "day job" works. I'm all for more like this 🥰😍

    I echo the many comments about the video being a great demonstration of what is possible, especially with your foresight to bring a few basic materials, tools and patterns. The video 'style' definitely added to that as well. Also I appreciated the discussion of the safety requirements of your costume - for someone who loves costumes, but is not a performer, that information really helped me understand the urgency / need to create a vest for yourself.

    This video goes directly into my Design and Technology compilation for high school textiles students - at last a real life example for students to understand why they need to collaborate over the needs of the client at the beginning of the design process (not just, for example, find out their favourite colour). You hit all the important bits - colour and print vs the rest of the production/wardrobe, fabric type, stylistic functionality and sewing to a deadline.
    Thanks for an excellent teaching tool.

      Thank you, that's such a fun comment to get. Love the thought of my video being used as a teachable moment (in the best sort of way) 🥰🥰

    I had to close my eyes when you cut the paper with sewing shears!
    You handled this mix-up with so much more practicality and enthusiasm than I would have done.

    this was exhilarating to watch, what a challenge! i really do not mind the lighting/less-"polished" shooting, the story and variety of moments you shared such as ironing at the concession stand is way more interesting than studio quality production. your life is a docu-drama! embrace it!

    I love this insight into the realities of your work life and am super impressed with what you accomplished. And as a hobby dancer who was totally still stitching backstage right up to a performance, I can relate a little bit.

    Hi Shannon, just a tip to keep in your sewing kit for future "gorilla sewing"...... a sliver of soap. The "last remnants" of a bar of soap. And it wash out plus you have a bit of perfume smell as a bonus! 😉
