We're going behind the scenes with award-winning, world-renowned photographer Ian Berry. We'll discuss his current project Living Apart/Water Worldwide, alongside following Ian as he captures new images throughout the day. He will discuss his techniques as he photographs.
Ian Berry was born in Lancashire, England. He made his reputation in South Africa, where he worked for the Daily Mail and later for Drum magazine. He was the only photographer to document the massacre at Sharpeville in 1960, and his photographs were used in the trial to prove the victims' innocence.
Henri Cartier-Bresson invited Berry to join Magnum in 1962, when he was based in Paris. He moved to London in 1964 to become the first contract photographer for the Observer Magazine. Since then assignments have taken him around the world: he has documented Russia's invasion of Czechoslovakia; conflicts in Israel, Ireland, Vietnam and the Congo; famine in Ethiopia; and apartheid in South Africa. The major body of work produced in South Africa is represented in two of his books: Black and Whites: L'Afrique du Sud (with a foreword by the then French president François Mitterrand), and Living Apart (1996).
    The masterclass will cover:
    • Planning and location selection.
    • Gear and technical requirements.
    • Discussing work styles, techniques and shooting.

My dear friend Ian, what a wonderful piece. Ian has supported me for more the 25 years as a sounding board for my own work. We lunch together when we can, reminice until the tea goes cold and basically come away feeling good and revitalised about the work we do. Everything that is said in the short film is knowledge and the young photographers shoulde listen hard, be inspired and carry on the legacy of all those who have gone before. I'm still listening....

In awe that my book Birdmen book featured in this video. Ian has been a really big influence in my life as still is to this day. I have never met and worked with a more naturally gifted photographer and blessed that we spent a lot of time together working on shoots and eating lots of food while we talked and talked. Thank you Ian.

Ian Berry has been a total inspiration over the years. Bought his classic book The English when it first came out, many of the shots taken with Olympus gear.

Water is abundant and being controlled by a few. As for hindsight you can only aim to be at the right place at the right time and a little bit of luck. 28mm an excellent focal length.
