Thank you sir for your sharing. I am working with a SDIT that i can certainly not afford to buy. These videos are so invaluable to me. Words can't express my gratitude and freedom that you help me and I'm sure many others with. I am a disabled vet without being gtmranted disability pay for the past 55 years, just a short background on one person. Not complaining for what i don't have grateful for what i do have. Words can't express. I salute you sir!
I really like seeing the dog break the position and how you correct her until she goes back in position. That’s really valuable material, rather than shower a perfect dog and no showing the journey to get there.
Great i started rally obedience with my 1 year old standard poodle. i started teaching this on a platform months ago but never really paid attention to the bio mechanics of sitting straight etc. until i was told about posture benefits and points will be deducted in competition. so i built a box like yours today. also its a lazy way of training having the dog do things sloppy but done right looks amazing to friends. Thanks Nate.
Thank you for your very helpful vids Nate I will surely use your techniques when I train my dog someday. compare to other trainers here in youtube your methods are easy to understand for for the owner and the dog.
Our 1 Year old Fox Red Lab (Harvey) has Hip Dysplasia, one of the exercises Physio has advised we do is 'sit/stands'. Trouble is every time he sits both feet splay outwards. We are going to make a shaping box tomorrow and hopefully this will be the answer to getting Harvey to sit properly, therefore making the exercises effective. THANK YOU :)
i have never owned a dog, but have always wanted one. now that i'm older, i'm in contact with rescue shelters, and for awhile now i've been studying and trying to learn training methods and dog psychology and development. having just binge-watched most of your channel, i can say that in just 1 day, i've learned more than what i've picked up over the past several years and in my entire life. i feel like now i know what it truly means to raise and to care for a dog, why some commands and rewards work or don't work, when to pivot to an alternative training strategy or to back down, and most importantly, what it really takes to create a partnership, day in and day out, that's rewarding for both man and dog (but especially dog!) your teachings make it clear that people often think getting a dog (i.e. an intelligent mix/breed) is principally about your companionship and your own happiness, but you remind us that dogs actually have many more needs than what humans may expect out of the relationship, and they are such complex and wonderful creatures.
Your dog actually should not be going into a down from a sit. Butt should not be going down first. Should be front legs down first, then butt. The purpose of using a box is to make sure dogs front feet do not move when giving command distinctions from a distance.
Awesome! Just what i was looking for. I have a chihuahua that hates to get in the correct position front. I have ised cones to guide before and they worked. But i wanted something that wasn’t so movable. I found out about positioning boxes. But he hates doing it correctly on a leash especially🤦♀️I feel a box will help. Plus..i am trying to do more "positive" with him. As correcting a chihuahua isnt the easiest thing to do😂 So came to see if you jad something. And of course you do😂 Thank you so much for your videos. They make it much easier for me. My trainer is awesome. Dogs in genius book of Records for obedience points and such. But...she is so big on correction. And I'm a softy😂. I can be consistent but hate to constantly correct.
Thank you! I measure the box to my dog Arih. Tell your dog to down and then get the measurements. For best results, the box should be sized for each dog. Cheers! :)
Excited to try this with my giant girl. She's a SDIT and I'm nervous about her size in public but I think this would help us a lot. Your videos have been so helpful for this team. Thank you so much.

Thank you for this video! I have a question, I am training my 9 months old stafford to perform the sit, stand en down command on distance. He does understand what I am asking, because he changes position, but in the meanwhile he sneaks every movement a bit forwards. If I would not interupt this and just keep asking commands, he would end up in front of me instead of 2 meter away from we where he started. Could practising in this shaping box help him to understand he'll have to stay in place instead if moving forward? And what are the sizes of your shaping box, do I could build one myself😊
Sorry, I don't have a video on that. Just put your dog in the down position, then measure your dog so you know the size the box needs to be. I used Corner Braces to connect the boards. :)
Hey Nate. Thank you for all the content, such a great channel. Got a new rescue dog that is a year and a half old. Total sweetheart but likes to lick when you are petting her. Better to have a verbal “no” or say nothing and stop petting all together?
Hi Zach, either option could work. If she enjoys being pet, and licking stops the reward, then that could stop her from licking. If "no" is your conditioned correction, then that could stop the licking as well. Conditioned correction, meaning it predicts a correction, just like my "yes" predicts a reward. Our words have meaning to our dogs based on what they predict. I hope that helps and thank you for supporting my channel, I really appreciate it. Hello Nate! I would like a box like yours. Did you make it or buy it? If you made it, what are the dimensions? I've seen many boxes, but I really like the size, shape, and structure of yours. Great video, thanks.
Thanks nate fr this video. Is there a exact measurement of shaping box.. it there is,can y pls send me the exact measurement of ye shaping box. Thanks nate and y have a great day
Hi Nate, firstly I just have to say "i love your training videos". I have a 5 years old search and rescue dog who s having huge fun with me leaning form your videos and a 17 week old Malinois who is also doing amazing. However, my young puppy gets car sick and is very quickly learning to hate the car, even to the point of reading when I am going to put her in the car to go for a walk or to training and avoiding me. Any tips you can give me to get her to love the car? I'd really appreciate your help.
Thanks! It's all about predictability. Make the car predict something that your dog enjoys. It also shouldn't always mean you are going on a ride every-time you take your pup to the car. I hope that helps!
Listen. I have been trying to problem solve this for MONTHS. I have a washed SDiT who is now a sports dog and I can not get her heel clean and her position changes are SO sloppy. Trying to fix this as a wheelchair user has been a nightmare. I don't know why I never thought of this but this is so so helpful. Can't thank you enough.
how early do you start with the shaping box? Do you use it to learn the basic commands? Or only for the finishing touch? I own serveral GSD, at the moment a 10 weeks old puppy. I did not start on any commands, just on the movements with loring. tnx from Belgium :-)
hi again from Sweden! I wonder, is it realistic that I take this box and put it in different spots around my farm and each time the dog go into the box in that spot I name it differently so that the dog get used to recognize the spots and so learn to run up to each spot I have named and sit there... I mean for example, one spot could be the Gate so you bring the box to the gate to an exact spot you want your dog to take when going down to the gate, or you bring it up to a tower where they can see a lot further out over the fields and each time you go there with the box you say Tower, and maybe you do the same for Garden, Backdoor, Frontdoor etc... until the dog learn what each place has for name and where the dog should sit when called upon these spots around your farm... is that a possible way to teach a dog to get to know where to go on your land?! btw, Great content as usual! 👌🏻

Hi Nate, just came across your channel and like the box training...4 months ago I rescued an 8 month old Australian cattle dog she was tired under a tree most of her life so little if any interaction with other dogs, I have been using the prong collar for gentle corrections and over the past 5 months I've worked with her around 6 times a day ( morning and night walks long, with 10 min sessions during the day) with results slowly coming through. Question. she goes completely nuts in the car if she sees another dog....all the trainers show them training in a controlled environment ...any tips b4 she destroys the back of my VW Golf 🙏
Thanks, I'm happy you enjoyed the video. To answer your question; I would travel with her in a crate. If you can't travel with a crate, then you will need someone else to help you with the training. While you're driving, then can keep the dog under control or you can work with the dog while they drive. I hope that helps! :)
Hey Nate, quick question, im getting a puppy soon, when he's 8 weeks old, but the thing is I will be 2 weeks in one house with him and then move to another house (one for each parent). Do i just introduce him to each house like you would with a new puppy? Or how do I approach him when moving between houses constantly? Thank you i love your vids
How would you work with a dog that's anxious about things like getting into a box. My golden can jump up on just about anything, any solid platform, can paws up solid platforms, but getting into something/feeling like things are to close around him or that it might shift under him or move and bump him, makes him anxious. Boxes is one of those obstacles.

We have 2 28 week GS and the male as soon we go outside starts jumping and haven't been able to control that. What can it do about it. They don't like to be apart when we take them out for a walk either. They are also afraid of everything even to soap bubbles. Thanks in advance.
I discuss these questions in my Q&A videos. Go to the Q&A videos on my channel and look at the description. I have each question with a timestamp, so you can easily jump to that section in the video. Thanks! :)

Because it's very clear to the dog. Most dogs can learn a climb stay much easier than most other stays. Just like a sit from a stand is easier for a dog than a sit from a down is. :)
This video is good but it would be much nicer to see this with a dog that doesn’t already know the box. You say guide the dog in but the dog already knows this and goes in on their own. What about a dog that doesn’t lure very well despite high food drive? Or a dog that gets confused easily? What about size recommendations? How tight should the box be relative to your dog?
It’s not a shipping box it’s a position box. Nothing is being shaped. The set position stand position /down position/come in front position/ heel position/ Your imagination can be endless with the positions you can teach with the boxes.😀
It would be easier for Arie to engage you with eye contact if you stopped putting your hands in your bait pockets until after you marked the behavior. I absolutely refuse to mark a behavior with my dog in front of me, when she looks to my hand for reward, as it is a form of anticipation. This is inadvertent classic conditioning on your part.

Awesome video - do you need to specifically train "break" or is that something the dog learns just through repetition.
I’m pretty sure he does both. Specifically training the break and lots and lots of repetitions.

@@NateSchoemer How high would you make the front and sides for this box?
How would you work with a dog that's anxious about things like getting into a box.
My golden can jump up on just about anything, any solid platform, can paws up solid platforms, but getting into something/feeling like things are to close around him or that it might shift under him or move and bump him, makes him anxious.
Boxes is one of those obstacles.

What do you give to your dogs as a reward. Please make a small video about it
I use toys or freeze-dried dog food. :)
It'll be useful for correcting the Shaping Box posture.
I'm learning well.
Glad it was helpful! :)
Thanks! :)
@@NateSchoemer thank you, will do that. You are awesome bro!
You got the dimensions of that box
What are the dimensions of the box?
This box was measured out for my dog Arih. Place your dog into a down and then get your dogs measurements. Cheers!

I measured this out specifically for Arih. Have your pup lay down and then measure it out. :)
What size is the shaping box?

going to custom one for my puppy! she has lazy sit, lazy down, lazy bones 😂😂 definitely need this to give her good posture
Lol! Yes, this should help! :)
I just made this box, my 5 month mal has been getting into the bad habit of doing lazy downs and sits.. it’s driving me crazy
Hopefully this helps. :)
Why is the climb an easier stay, i dont understand why that is ?
Because it's very clear to the dog. Most dogs can learn a climb stay much easier than most other stays. Just like a sit from a stand is easier for a dog than a sit from a down is. :)
This video is good but it would be much nicer to see this with a dog that doesn’t already know the box. You say guide the dog in but the dog already knows this and goes in on their own. What about a dog that doesn’t lure very well despite high food drive? Or a dog that gets confused easily? What about size recommendations? How tight should the box be relative to your dog?
what do you do when you run out of treats? She expects a treat each behavior.
Don't run out of treats or end the session before you run out.

He has a video teaching how to phase out the rewards
ua-cam.com/video/a2OBoptftYs/v-deo.html :)
It’s not a shipping box it’s a position box. Nothing is being shaped. The set position stand position /down position/come in front position/ heel position/ Your imagination can be endless with the positions you can teach with the boxes.😀
Thanks for sharing!

Lol!
