    Great job man. This was one of my favorite helicopter types in XP11. Definitely buying it thanks to your review.

      Thanks. And thanks for letting me know about my little blunder. Didn't take too long to put right. 👍

    Small details like wrong sound when landing with inflatables, gives me a hint of the seriousness in this mod. I already have a mod from Cowansim, but...theres something missing. It feels like a very-very standard mod. I wish there was a heli mod with same quality like the JF's Vulcan or Hawk.

      Yeah. there still isn't much in the way of helicopter mods that go into real depth and think that's probably because although helicopters are becoming more popular in the sim, helicopter pilots still make up a relatively small proportion of total users so I imagine there's some degree of economy to be considered on how much work they put into it. There's some promising stuff on the horizon though. I'm personally looking forward to Blackbird simulations Huey and Miltech Simulations Chinook.

      that touchdown sound is heard because R66 landed actually on the ground, not water. You can see it suddenly stops when reached couple of feet below water surface. It seems that water physics in MSFS are not modelled at all.

    No such thing as retract floats, they’re for emergency use, not water landings; however, having a reset feature for sim purposes could be useful to practice with them.

      I realise this is not how they are intended to be used in reality but previous Cowansim modules with this feature have also had a means of retracting them after they've been deployed.

    Nice review, appreciate you mention pros as well as cons. Cowansim's R66 is beautifully modeled, and I like the flight model as well. Too bad there is no vortex ring state, no retreating blade stall, no engine damage, no autopilot, etc. My dream helicopter would have Cowansim's visuals, FlyInsides's flight model and turbine simulation, HPG's autopilot and Taog's attention to detail.

      Yeah, I didn't want to focus too much on the lack of failure simulation as that's more to do with the Asobo flight model and therefore pretty much out of Cowansim's hands. But I do think they've managed to get a really balanced helicopter out of it provided you don't want to try and break it. Hopefully Asobo will finish the flight model at some point but they may be saving that for MSFS2024.

      I'd rather have a helicopter from A2A.

    Hello! Is it better than the Cowan 500e?

    • @flightsoficarus
      @flightsoficarus  2 місяці тому

      Whether or not it is better than the 500e is pretty subjective to personal opinion and I've not flown the 500e much since it had it;s big update a while back. They're fairly even in terms of quality, which is surprising as they're made by the same people. If I were to choose which between the two which one I wanted to fly I'd probably pick the R66 over the 500e, but I'm sure there are many others who'd choose the 500e.

    Hello "Flight of Icarus" very good review. I was wondering if you had the chance to fly also the Ka-10 from "Touching Clouds" for msfs to compare it with the others and also with this one. From my perspective this Cowansim R66 seems to be very good and close to the feeling of realism the Ka-10 gave to me. Exactly like you said, stable but not for bad reasons.
    Cheers.

      I do have the Ka-10 actually. It's a fun little rotorcraft and great for exploring close to the ground. It's coaxial rotor system and rudder make it quite different from other aircraft available in MSFS though but the coaxial rotor makes it naturally very stable and eliminates the need for a tail rotor to provide coutner torque. The only other coaxial rotorcraft I can think of that I've flown (in sim of course) is the Ka-50 in DCS.

      It's on the front of the collective, under the governor switch like it is on the Cabri G2.
