I had the opportunity to grill some tri-tips for family and friends during our recent trip to South Carolina. Here I share my journey trying to smoke these meats on a gas grill using hickory wood chips and a wood chip box. It went well overall and it brought me back to my electric smoker days. We all enjoyed the food and time together so I'd say that's a win.

I did this on vacay using foil 'smoke-bombs'. I had a MUCH CHEAPER cruddy grill at the ARB & B my daughter had. There was no thermometer and I didn't have one anywhere. I just winged it and went 2 hours on medium heat using 2 of the good sized foil chip-bombs. The only thing I did different was this grill had vents in the lid in back which I covered with foil from the inside of the grill then poked 2 holes so smoke had a way out but only a little. Meat was great and was about medium not dry at all. Bark was tasty & smoky everyone loved it that we had over (Marines). I'd do it again for sure but bring thermometers. I used Traeger beef rub plus the Tri Tip was one of those pre-seasoned ones.

Wow you definitely went next level in comparison. Foiling up the openings would've been a great idea for the grill I used too. Do you remember how many burners there were and how many of them you used? I was debating on how many to run.
