    About The Reign of Istar
    Before the Cataclysm . . .
A kender becomes a Solamnic Knight (almost).
An ogre emerges as an unlikely savior of the dwarven race.
And gladiators compete in the bloodsport of Istar.
Together with a novella by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, these and more short stories, penned by Richard A. Knaak, Michael Williams, and others of the original Dragonlance Saga creative team -- tell wondrous tales of Krynn in the legendary time of the Kingpriest.

Six Songs for the Temple of Istar by Michael Williams
This short poem is supposed to have been the only record of the great Silvanesti Bard Astralas writing about visions of impending doom from Istar, but what it’s really about is a bard being summoned by the Thon Thalas on a ship which leads him to Istar and proposed a warning to Istar. It’s a poem that uses style over substance, which arguably is what all poetry is, but does not project any actual doom, just the promise of a lesson to be learned.
Colors of Belief by Richard A. Knaak
This was a great short story! It starts with a Knight of Solamnia visiting Istar for the first time, and getting a first hand dose of just how corrupt it has become. He meets an old bartender friend who leaves when he mentions Paladine, then an inquisitor named Brother Gaurim passive aggressively mocks him, and stages an intervention to arrest him. The Knight came upon two men who ended up being guards beating a defenseless man. The knight stepped in and was arrested after defeating them, then immediately sentenced to the arena.
The knight refused to fight, so the ‘cleric’ Gaurim had an innocent half-elf murdered. Rather than let innocents die for him, he agreed to fight, and his opponent said he would get him out of the arena as they were fighting the next day. The elf cut himself, then healed it, proving he was a cleric, so the knight trusted him. They fought and the knight was killed, then resurrected outside Istar. The elf turned out to be an acolyte of Sargonnas and was trying to maintain balance in Istar in his own way. This story did a great way of subverting expectations and showcasing how truly evil Istar had become near the end.
    Kender Stew by Nick O’Donohoe
I was not expecting this story to destroy me emotionally, but it did, in the best of ways. The story centers on a Knight of Solamnia named Morgan. He is stationed in Xak Tsaroth and he trains young boys who want to be squires and ultimately Knights of Solamnia. While here he met a Kender named Louraine who was a sort of mortician. Morgan had no idea or refused to admit that she was a kender, and they struck up a friendship, then a relationship. One day she asked him to promise to train anyone who would want to be a knight no matter who they were or what they looked like. He swore to her, his love, that he would. She then, shortly later, left the city.
Years went by and a young man appeared named Tarli. He ended up being a half kender and Morgan trained him to be a knight’s squire like the other boys. He clearly shared the kender traits that made it impossible to be anything but himself and after the other boys finally accepted the Oath and The Measure, ..

Loved the main story for detailing the corruption found when a "certain kind of good" is left unchallenged by evil. A central them in DL philosophy. Also the duality of the gods of Good. That they care for mortals and wish them the best, but are also completely uncompromising on what it means to be good. If you have to hurt an innocent to save the world then you are still damned, because there is no trolley problem for the gods. Paraphrased from another DL book of dubious canonicity, only evil promises expediency. We suffer to make the virtues of good something worthwhile. It's a look at the relative harshness of absolute good in a world where belief can grant power.

Sadly I got into the livestream near the end. We've been a bit distracted by a storm system that has been producing tornadoes nearby. Power hasn't went out for us though (it never seems to, being off grid), and the starlink is a champ.
I recently purchased this book for the second time around (I had bought it the first time when it was released), and I remember enjoying it.
I look foward to reading it again Adam.
Thanks for making the great Dragonlance content.

My pleasure. I hope you are missed by all those tornadoes! I dream of living off grid....

@@DLSaga Thanks Adam. It's been a challenge doing it in the Canadian climate. It is a lot easier if you live further south. The ideal place being somewhere drier, sunny with less cloud cover. But, it can be done almost anywhere.
We are solar primary, with a propane generator on standby to charge the batteries if we have a really cloudy or stormy day. And in the winter of our climate zone, the generator becomes the primary and solar a secondary. We are looking at wind power to add a steady supply of energy year round. All that said, we wouldn't trade it.

Sorry I missed the live show. I have so many comments on this great anthology (as you know haha) but I'll beat back my over-exuberance disease for today and just say this: In Silken Threads - I thought it was awesome and brought up an interesting thought on faith. Was Brother Michael not faithful to Mishakal by denying her offer of salvation 3 times? Or did he show true faith by refusing to enter paradise if that meant abandoning his fellow man (especially Nikole) to the horrors of the Cataclysm. I think you can tell which one I lean towards, but was interested in your thoughts. Cheers!

Personally I think k he willingly forsook faith for love.

@DLSaga agreed, though I think of faith and love as one and the same most times. It sounded like there is another story about Michael and Nikole? I wasn't aware of that, and look forward to reading that, thanks

He keeps saying DragonLance was targeting kids. I always thought these were for adults that liked Fantasy. But I also started reading these from my moms collection when I was 10 years old back in 1997.
