I have to disagree about the "copying someones style" bit. It's something that naturally happens when you learn art and it's also something you naturally grow out of as you develop your visual library. With so many young (or new) artists posting to social media we see this step publicly, feel defensive, and call them out. I think it does a disservice to the developing artist.

You're not wrong but I have a particular artist in mind who has heavily based her style on sara's and she's quite successful because of it. In my mind her art just feels,, wrong and that's probably because I know that usually I would see this style on sara's profile. She'll probably grow out of it at some point because that style just isn't completely hers, but it generally isn't a great thing to do

copying in art is natural and ain't a bad thing. the so-called great artists of history like Michelangelo copied from Roman sculptures. and to be honest, because the art community is so saturated, it's very rare to find a unique style; it most likely existed in someone else's sketchbook already. it's similar to knowing someone else in this world looks like you, but you just haven't seen them

I feel like finding your own style isn't a singular thing. There is no end goal really, and the problem comes when people expect you to have only one style only. I always had multiple interest and styles, so to me the idea in the popular art community that a style has to look the same and once it changes your "stealing" a style of another is petty. Your own style is never entirely your own and does not have to remain the same to please others. You don't have to be a push over. 😊 Art is many things and lives off of change and development.

I think it's important to see the difference in getting in to art, and getting better at art. Personal opinion, but starting with anatomy and the fundamentals might not necessarily be the best - only if you really want to develop and improve. If you just wanna start drawing, I think copying your fave artist or show is a good start to create an interest, at that point art should be for fun ♡ Then you can start focusing on fundamentals and style

When I was in art school someone commented that a piece of mine looked very similar to another artist. The professor’s response was that it was ok and that, if I kept working, in a decade my art would no longer look like someone else’s. Be flattered that your art is among the “early influences” of someone who may someday go on to incorporate the sufficiently-broad range of influences we call “style.”

All of the things you mentioned made so much sense 👏 when you said that our taste outweighs our technique/current style, it was the best explanation on why (‼️) we should practice and u even mentioned practicing/observing anatomy + lighting to start off with (how we should practice); what to “copy” for our studies: contemporary artists should be second to traditional masters

Thank you for your honest opinion about that topic! I think it is totally true, that you need to have a variety of inspirations and to not focus on one other artist, so that you have multiple things that you copy, BUT I think you are missing one point. I think when you are younger these this topic is just not something what you care about so much, because you just want to draw what you like and be like your idols and so on. I think realizing that you have to mix many inspirations and try out own different things is a thing which most people need to discover as they grow as an artist and as themselves, too. Its like learning other things, too. In the beginning you copy to learn. And with the learning process you get to a point, where you understand, that you need to get out of this mindset to grow and get better =).
But thank you a lot for this video, I totally enjoy seeing your painting process! Its really beautiful!

Digital was the most difficult as I had trouble getting my works to look more natural and like "real" art I use real because I wanted my printed works to look like my originals on paper or canvas. Now, Digital Art is real art make no mistake about that! I enjoyed listening to your take on this subject and I look forward to watching more of your videos in the future! Be safe and take care!

With the copying art some things I agree with but a lot I don’t... if you are beginner artist I think that if you get down the basic shapes of what you want your style to look like then you can tweak it and learn from it. Many amazing artist learned through the shapes of there favorite artist and made there style through it. I think posting a 1 to 1 ratio of a different artist is theft but personal drawing that is for growing and seeing the shapes and hues and tones in a drawing is very important and can make you grow a lot.

I think the concept of "own style" ia kinda overrated and even absurd, bcuz one person can make so many different things without actually having a definite style, thts the beauty of it, to be able to make things in so many different ways tht u can still make ppl guess "who made this??" instead of "thts definetly made by (...)" ofc having ur art recognized by ppl is great, tht just means u reached a point where u hv ur own signature in everything u do but the downside is... it also feels like u r stuck with tht signature bcuz its obviously smthg u do Unconsciously & u actually adopted a specific style, thts gonna be hard to get rid of if u're eilling to bring in more variation, for me i feel like taking away the pressure of "having a style" would affect greatly your performance on making art, u'll definetly enjoy it more bcuz u're not looking to progress for the purpose of trying to reach the "your style" point but rather you're just craving for progress, giving yourself a distination especially in art related stuff might make u stagnate in a way? ofc u'll keep wanting to progress but not the same as whn u reached your label, whn u dont hv a specific style u're just all over the place & doing everything, u just accumulate everything & throw it out there and it'll be so amazing ppl will keep asking for every piece "who tf did this?" ppl will keep asking instead of just knowing and even in some cases inexperienced artist stick so much to their style tht their work might even become boring and repetitive, i definetly personally prefer not having a style, it just seems more exciting and less stressful than going on a quest to find my style, just making art is wht matters at the end of the day 💜

Nice video, but my comment about this "copy" issue is the vision you have about copying, I think that combine styles with the clear vision about finding what art problem that artist could resolve with that style (that i like) can be a good thing to think about. Everyone copy, but somebody can find some great art solutions combining their life exprience with some art styles that like. We do this unconsciously.
The bad thing is litterally copy a style and a ideia for a illustration and them take credit for that, and not combine and study many art styles (not a good thing focus in only one art style) and not thiking much about the idea we want to comunicate with our art.
    Nice art! Thanks for all!

Abigail A Do a study of fruits, draw what you see. Focus on how the shadows make shapes instead of the whole picture. My art teacher taught me that. It helped me so I hope it can help you!

I dont think I actually pulled from anyone or had any artists which I wanted to emulate when I started drawing, then again I also didnt learn the appropriate way I guess? I didnt study anatomy or used refs or some such, though I think I figured out lighting and colour theory during my ms paint phase funnily enough (classic making a blend between colours using the watercolour brush and eye dropper tool haha) but then after that I went into traditional pencil drawing of women, mostly correcting things byt repitition and knowing it didnt look right. As for my style though, it sort of just progressed naturally as I found things I liked more by experimenting a little and challenging myself; Ive a habit of consistently being way too ambitious and while I learn lots Im also taking a very long time nitpicking and trying to get it right haha I like where my style is at though, and if I were to be someone who did art as more than a hobby then Id absolutely put more effort into trying to learn things in a less haphazard way, especially considering my weaknesses in art, but in contrast its so easy to see my progress which is nice ^^ in any case sorry for rambling, I love how you address how people develop their styles, or in some cases emulate others, as its fascinating to me considering how weird I went about it xD love the art too!! :D

I’m here and I want to learn. But every piece I make just tears me down. I hate it. I get so frustrated because I wish my art looked half as good as the Instagram artists I see post everyday. I don’t know how to get out of this hole that I keep digging down in. I feel like I lost passion of the thing that I loved. I don’t remember the last time I felt good or happy doing art 😔

I feel you man - I get the same sometimes too and it really sucks. My best advice would be to try a new medium; use digital? Try to sketch something out with pen and paper! Oil pastels! Usually use watercolor? Try collage / scrapbooking (imo this is so satisfying and really helps my sense of color)! Anything new and fun really!
Another idea of the same theme is to change the topic of your drawing - usually draw people? Try flowers/landscapes!
Perhaps try to figure out at what point you you get frustrated?
Do anything that gets you out of your rut - something new, something unfamiliar, something that piques your interest. It doesn't even have to be "art" per say - anything that you feel expresses your creativity. Pick a mood. A scene. An experience. Try to describe it the best you can, however you can.
Another thing you can do is look for inspiration on social media (although you mention that you compare your art to others' on Instagram so maybe that's not the best idea for you specifically).
Try changing your environment - perhaps you are sick of being in the same place?
Idk sorry for rambling at you I just find that these help me sometimes. Most of all I would say - don't give up! Just keep at it, because you will get out of your rut, I promise ⊂(´・◡・⊂ ) !

I have tried emailing them from email on their site but it’s just getting returned undeliverable. I can’t set up a new account because my email has been used. I don’t know what else to do.

damn u made a pretty helpful video and ppl down here still complaining
also i just wanna say that actively looking for an art style will get you no where. just literally draw what and how you like and the style will come to you. (without blatantly copying one artist,,,,)
and i cant be annoyed with beginners, because they are beginners and they dont know any better, but they should have some other goal with art other than "i want an art style"
