When I was a teenager, I didn't like Saigal at all. In my early 20s I left my hometown for my job. I used to listen to the radio every night, especially All India Radio, Urdu service. One day that analog radio was set so precisely (by chance) that the audio was as clear as someone singing in the next room. The first song on the 10:30 PM programme that day was "Ae quatib-e-taqdeer mujhe itna bata de" by Saigal sahib. I was mesmerized by that singing and was so smitten that the next day I bought Saigal's entire cassette set (T-Series, thank you). I listened to Saigal over and over. I found the origins of nearly all the great movie singers in Saigal's voice - right up to Kishor Kumar. I could see why Saigal was considered one of the greatest. He truly was.
Very true; the most best ghazal writer along with Jaan Nissar Akhtar, in my opinion. Unfortunately both writers are under rated yet personel like us remember them.
