The Media Really Doesn't Understand Rammstein

- I had intended to talk about something else, and then I read this: foreignpolicy.... Equating the band to the rise of certain political views in Germany is a bridge I can't get across.

I studied german for several years and listening to Rammstein helped me learn the language. I agree the band is so misunderstood. Thanks for bringing these things to light.
I'm doing the same thing! Duolingo, Rammstein and Dark have helped me get somewhat of a grasp on the language.
It's funny to see two people saying this, my partner is a native German speaker and I'm native English and speak Dutch as a second language. Naturally, I wanted to improve German to be able to speak with his family in a more personal way. At first, I was joking that I was listening to Rammstein and just improving my German with it - but it's true. I often ask for help with interpretation of the lyrics if I can't understand the words well, but Lindemann sings very clearly in German, so it makes it so much easier for me to follow along and hear the different words clearly enunciated.
It’s always annoying when the media makes it seem like bands endorse what their songs are about.Metallica doesn’t love killing babies even though they wrote Harvester of Sorrow. On a more lighthearted note, I remember hearing that the Beastie Boys’ Fight for Your Right to Party was actually meant to make fun of frat parties instead of promote them
Man, living at home is such a drag
Now your mom threw away your best porno mag
From what I've read, Fight For Your Right was satire. And the band got annoyed that nobody got the joke.
It was the same with Boys Don't Cry by the Cure. That was a protest song I only found out recently. Then Panic by the Smiths was about Jimmy Saville, not Morrisey's dislike of discos.
@@McSomething15At the time I took it to mean that you had to fight for your right to some time off to enjoy yourself even if it means going out for a quiet drink.
As someone who has limited experience with Rammstein's music l really appreciate this video. One of many misunderstood bands
Admittedly, I'm not very familiar with Rammstein, but from what you're saying here it seems that lyrically they are a bit like Big Black (showing my age here).
Finding real life disturbing things to sing about to poke holes in the idealized status quo notions that we are some wonderful society.
Except Big Black is really good
@@jeremysanders9336 yes, they were, and that carried over into Shellac.
Steve is a great guy, definitely some of my best recording experiences were with him in the control room.
What Till has or hasn't done is besides the point - once again the media loves to stare at metal music and decry its horrible lyrics and subject matter, while the same if not worse sits in the Top 40 on the regular. I say worse because while Rammstein discusses while not condoning eras in Germany like the Holocaust, Top 40 songs regularly glorifies every day "common" atrocities like rape and murder. It's a double standard that has always existed.
Edit: TL;DR - great video.
The really screwy thing, is Germany has a whole subculture like Japan of some odd series of humiliation fetishes.
@dixonhill1108 Yes, as what was made fun of in 'Allo 'Allo especiallywith Otto Flick. But the British upper and upper middle class, too, as in the film Personal Services.
That foreign policy article is really bad. It does a horrible job of drawing lines between Rammstein and the current political atmosphere, other than trying to say that Rammstein is nationalistic and chauvinistic. It even acknowledges the satirical nature of Rammstein's aesthetic while also trying to claim that it's a cultural plague.
You’ve missed one. Wiener Blut is about Josef Fritzl!
wir halten zusammen R+
What you say about singing about an event doesn't glorify it. This is seen a lot in Sabaton songs. Almost their entire music work is around war and conflict, but the band openly is against fighting.
I'm a HUGE death metal fan! A lot of death metal songs are about killing and gore and all sorts of stuff. There was a time when the bands try to one-up each other to see how gory they could get in their lyrics. Does this mean they're all serial killers? Does this mean I'm a serial killer??? 🤣🤣🤣 Of course not! George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher of Cannibal Corpse goes to PTA meetings just like everyone else. LOL
TheWrestlingGuy on that message board probably got reported and the person who messaged you was likely very worried because they messaged you
The Mann Gegen Mann video makes Love's Sweet Exile by the Manic Street Preachers look sweet and romantic by comparison. There was a lot of brutality in that video especially in the second half of the video where the naked muscle men maul five of tbe band members about. Only Schneider managed to fight them off. Richard looked as if he was enjoying being lifted up. Till looked weird like he was joined to those other people. The other three looked uncomfortable and scared and even in pain.
What!!! I watch this guys Hockey Channel lol!! Never knew he had this channel lol
Ive known for atleast a year but only recently checked it out a couple weeks ago and honestly I love it
Amazing how people don't get it. They all grew up in East Germany, No wonder they have some dark lyrics! I feel the same about Ich tu dir weh. My favorite is Du riechst so gut, & Bück dich. I do not care about the lyrics, they are musical masterpieces. I got a sampler CD at an Ozzfet MANY years ago that had Stripped & Sehnsucht on it, and I was hooked after that, mostly for their sharp precision in everything they play. Very German.
Keep up the great work & I hope they hit North America again touring.
Of course they don’t understand Rammstein, they speak German!
I wish I had music aptitude but I just don’t. That said as an artist I found myself curious about TEG enthusiasm for Rammstein. I speak some German. Sounds like a really interesting creative group. In art school I had a classmate who was constantly referencing Pink Floyd and The Wall.. reminds me of that sort of musical journey and questing.
I've never heard any Rammstein beyond "Du Hast" in Guitar Hero years ago at a friend's house, but I'm enjoying these videos you're making because your points really can go beyond that band. I listen to a lot of hard rock bands, none are maybe as eccentric as Rammstein or Rob Zombie, but it's crazy to me that people will form an opinion on very little or even purely anecdotal evidence. Said it on another video but growing up my parents hated Disturbed. They claimed it was just "angry, hateful music" because of David Draiman's vocal style (I thought it was mostly because my brother would play one or two of their songs over and over on repeat for hours, but sure, okay, let's go with "they're angry"). If you listen to their lyrics, they're a lot more positive than they get credit for. Where my folks would hear "angry", with lyrical context I'd call it more "impassioned".
But that's the beauty of art, right?
The current European tour has both the songs Rammlied and Rammstein.
GREAT VIDEO ! Saw RAMMSTEIN for first time this past 23rd of June in Madrid , Spain. I was in the Feuerzone front row and had the most amazing experience! Everybody there in the stadium was just having a great time. Period.
I love Metal, and 100% agree with Shannon on Country music.
I love metal, and 100% disagree with Shannon on country music. But that's OK! To each their own. 😊
@The Entertainment Guy -- The Deutschland video is very subtle and well done. Ruby who played Germania was chosen to represent the black stripe of the flag and she is dressed only in red and gold, the other two colors. I'm always amazed by the depth of their videos.
The new boogey man is Platz Eins.
so..... based from your thumbnail , i expected cool concert clips with fire. Aaaand based on your start of the video, I expected you to draw some cool stuff on that whiteboard. #kindaDissapointed. :)

The popular and mass media neither wants to understand, or profits from a band who have made a consistent body of artwork; that requires application and more than a 'Tom and Jerry' to get to grips with.
I don't have it in for them, but I just saw the video for Till the End, it was really...something
It was vile and gross and even worse than Pussy.
Completely unrelated but that shirt is simply a masterpiece
People should read Slayer lyrics & get over it.
What media even reports about Rammstein?
They never have. And that’s by design.
I’m still new to the band but ultimately I really enjoy there music I have never really looked up lyrics for there songs or even any other metal songs I just like the music and I’m not the best at picking up on those things myself and end of the day if I like the music the lyrics don’t bother me one but.
I used to be a huge Bohse Onkelz fan after their punk days. My german and Austrian colleagues looked at me like I was crazy but I didn’t care what the band had done in the past. I just liked the music.
As a german I can say you would be cancelled here right now 😂
Really enjoy these videos
People who don't understand Rammstein, have something really wrong about theirs lifes 😅
Right on Shannon! People just seem to love outrage these days and the media is feeding it and I am so over it... How liberally people are slandering and lying about others is honestly shocking. They are now having a petition to not have them play in Berlin... No idea where innocent until proven guilty went.
Gonna guess the majority of UA-cam's idea of what was "beautiful" in Germany is the polar opposite of reality. Let me know how that's working out.
About the whole vows thing…replace Psychosocial with their song “Iowa”. Sorry in advance.
I love lyrics that don't match the tone.
Children of the Grave by Black Sabbath. That song hits SO HARD.
Listen. Then listen again while reading the lyrics and go, what now?
Would love if you analyzed all your favorite bands like this,
Tool, Slipknot etc. Love this type of video!
Shannon we need to get you into metalcore
that shirt is awesome
Lol that shirt 😆🤣

There's unfortunately a lot of ignorant people who are 75-80 years behind in socio-cultural matters and historical events. They've got a lot to study to catch up, to say the least. That must be embarassing and confusing asf to be that far off from reality 🤯
Things to keep in mind: Rammtsein is not an anerican band and culture, historical and political contexts are different in Europe, shock-rock used to be a popular thing, women in their 20's and 30's aren't children and can make informed decisions.
Europe isn't one country but many countries that are very different from each other. Italy is still quite conservative, so Maneskin left their native Rome and moved to London. They are a glam rock band but get treated like they are a heavy metal band like Lordi or Rasmus.
There are many UK bands, and they are varied in heaviness and shockability. You would not call the Style Council or the Smiths shock rock. Many of these bands write about serious issues in code. Not all of them are like the Sex Pistols. Black Sabbath, the Damned or Iron Maiden.
Women over the age of 20 still need to be treated with respect. Being over the age of consent doesn't always mean you are consenting to sex. It's illegal to coerce or force people any age to have sex with you.
@@lemsip207 well if you force someone, that is rape no matter what age. I don't think this is the case here.
@@antivirusdictionary It's a grey area.
I read "Deutscheland" and stopped watching.
That was a close one eh?
Everthing bad said about Till is alleged, just like the commentary about the meaning of their lyrics over the years. Yet you make some kind of special exception for the controversy at Till having merit. Why?
The problem is not the lyrics of Rammstein nor the band being Nazis. The problem is the objectification of women and glorifying violent sex by Lindemann. It is recruiting young women for sex with Lindemann without being honest to them. Maybe it is also about using date rape drugs. The reaction of Lindemann and the band has been heartless I used to like them, but I am done with the band regardless of any court outcome.
You are done with them based on an accusation that's not even proven yet? What about "not guilty until proven otherwise"?
@@mauricedelarie8265 read my text. Watching "Till the End" proves my point beyond any doubt. Furthermore, the band does not deny the existence of the suck box and row zero. So your point is moot.
Exception for their entertaining theatrics at their shows .....I never really understood why people liked their music. They just sounded like a gothicy rip-off of KFMDM.
I think Laibach is who they really stole everything from
Just, maybe, just maybe, death, violence, sex, drugs, just maybe it breeds the violence we see on our streets, just maybe!75 year old Viet Nam war veteran!Maybe, just maybe,if they witnessed, the real thing, just maybe, they would shut up!
I've seen Rammstein a couple of times, and both times I've left in the middle of the set. Reason being, their music is actual garbage and they depend on fireworks and set dressing to draw fans in. Which doesn't appeal to me, because I'm there for the music. As someone who has worked festivals for over a decade now, it puts me in a great position in the sense that I always have an AAA pass, and since I'm working, I'm sober and usually backstage or in an exclusive area, away from all the hooplah, and can judge bands for their music alone. And Rammstein is just actual garbage who are nothing if you take away all their gimmicks.
There are so many better metal bands that don't get half the recognition from the public, because they don't have half the fireworks budget to spend. It's tragic how many people get fooled by the stage bravado. "Disturbing subject matter" my ass. Maybe if you're a kindergartener. They fall in the same basket with shit like Slipknot: kiddy-pool shit made for people who are just now stepping up from Hannah Montana. Go listen to Carcass or Mayhem instead.
Nope, I have enjoyed almost every song they have ever produced. Their music is fantastic.
@@NotTheHockeyGuy It really is, especially their songwriting and arrangement skills are top notch. Plus legendary riffs like Du Hast, Sonne and Mein Teil don't write themselves. Not to mention the depth Flake adds to the music.
They 100% deserve the place that they are in.
I’m not a rammstein fan, but their music is good. There is no doubt about it, my taste is just mostly Rap. That being said not all ”rap” is great, 90’s and early 00’s was my favorite when it comes to the style
@@NotTheHockeyGuyWhen it comes to rock/metal, Guns n roses and Iron Maiden are probably my favorite
The music isn't so bad. It's the singing that ruins it. They argue they have pyrotechnics because most fans don't understand German so wouldn't enjoy the lyrics. They are like Kiss and the Red Hot Chili Peppers writ large who used fire but not on the same scale. With the Chilis the fire came out of the top of their helmets. That was when Hillel Slovak was the guitarist.
Well English is not understood by many fans of bands from English speaking countries which is why so many have a screen backdrop showing promo videos and graphics like Genesis do. In the Peter Gabriel era he would wear various headdresses to demonstrate what the song was about.
