  • A lot of new people have been joining the YAMSQAUD lately so I thought it was time to chat a little bit about my rowing journey and how I came to where I am now.
    The 2k row is a huge part of any person related to rowing, whether a beginner wanting to get out on the water or a crossfit athlete wanting to see how low they can get their splits. The 2000m workout that we all know and love all brings us together. So, with that said, relating my journey to my 2k score and seeing if there was anything in particular that gave me my steps on in 2k is a very relatable journey for the yamsquad! Enjoy!

    im falling in love with your videos and rowing. i just started 2 months ago because my friends said id be good at it because of my height of 6'4 being only 14 yrs old. my first 2k i got 7:58.2 and then second was 7:38.1 and only hope to improve on the third, aiming for around 7:25. my goal is sub 7 before summer hits and with your videos i feel so motivated and inspired to keep on going. Hey Cam, i just want to point some misconceptions in this topic. You 've probably had tested blood lactate levels and not lactic acid levels. Lactic acid is acid by its ph values, where lactate is bicarbonate, a salt basically. Why is blood lactate test important for endurance athletes? We have 2 main energy systems in our body anaerobic (cp and glycogen) and aerobic (o2), but they are never used separately. Lactate levels shows us in what measure we use anaerobic lactic source in our activities. Which is very important when planning and programming functional training routine. Latest trends shows that largest volume of training is done in ut2 zone (sub 2 mmol/l blood lactate levels), this training zone doesn't make you row faster on 2k but rather prepare your cells metabolically for better clearance of toxic byproducts, increase number of mitochondrias in cell which allows more oxygen to be accepted in the cell, which should increase vo2 max. This allows us to recover much better in between high intensity sessions and are great for technical development. I'm not scientist so don't take my comment for granted, but should be generally correct.
    Keep the yam :)

    • @CameronBuchan
      @CameronBuchan  4 роки тому +19

      You're exactly right Vladimir! My terminology was off but like you said blood lactate was tested not lactic acid levels! Thanks for the correction! #yamsquad

    Caught a knee injury while doing the sport I love, cycling, and got forced to do rehab and strength training. I figured that I needed to have some goals with my training to not get completely mad while being at the gym, so I started pulling a bit on the rowing erg. Started doing intervals right away, and now did my first 2k after 4 interval sessions ;). Managed to complete it in 6:52! Im quite tall, 193cm, and I currently weigh about 85-86kgs so maybe its not that impressive but Im really pleased with that. My aerobic system is pretty good but I really lack the overall body strength for a good 2k. In two/three months have probably completed the rehab and il do a second 2k. If I can pull out a sub 6:40 il probably have to keep on rowing and have cycling as a second sport, because the thought of having a couple of years of rowing in me and 10 more kgs of muscle, something good might be possible to achive. Your video was so interesting and motivational, I just had to share my own ”story”. Thanks Cam!

    hey Cameron. Now that you've mentioned that thing about not being at your best throughout the season and having to work with that in mind, would you speak some time about how you organize your training in terms of conditioning, strength, stamina, etc, during the season? I can't seem to find any info related to rowing about this theme.
    The question i keep geting unanswered is wehther is best to build up strength and then build the stamina to spread it over a 2k, or first getting the stamina and then get more strong. I used to feel like the first was more accepted, but every now and then i'm hearing that stamina is more difficult to build so that's why you should work on that first, and then get stronger.
    I keep having this thought that for being prepared at a certain time of the year, you'll need more time gaining a certain amount of stamina than that same amount of strenght (i know they're not comparable but that's the idea). And if strenght is losed faster than stamina, maybe i should build that last. Because not only i'll get to spend less time losing what i gained first (i.e. losing stamina while building stregth), but it also will get losed slower. (!! --> All of that keeping in mind that theres a conditioning period just after this, where i get used to the 2k distance or whatever goal i set.)
    What do you think?

    • @CameronBuchan
      @CameronBuchan  4 роки тому

      That's a really interesting one! I've always went by the method of base fitness and strength are developed first and then later on in the season power and speed are added on top as like you said the former takes a while to improve! It can vary from person to person though so what works for one person might not work for another! #yamsquad

    Hi Cam
    I started premier level dragon boat/OC1 paddling at the age of 33. I think building the muscle is one of my biggest issues when paddling with the 20-something year olds on my team, while also working full time. I have knee issues and can't run long distances, so I use rowing instead (6k cardio test). My current plateaus are: 1:37 / 500m, 7:38 / 2k, and 23:28 / 6k. I see the splits you pull and just wonder how; is it the height? Purely your strength? I don't think my form can be so terrible.

    Hey, Cam. I'm a relative newbie when it comes to rowing. I swam in college doing the 1650 y/1500 m as my primary event. Post college I did quite a bit of cycling and marathon training. But while my kids were young I couldn't get a lot of training in. Now I'm 41 and have been going to Orange theory for the past 2 years. That's where I really got introduced to rowing. I enjoy it and it inspired me to buy my own concept 2. I've done probably 10 or fewer 2K, most on the water rower. My best 2K on the concept 2 is 6:47. My total time on the rower per week is a measly hour to an hour and a half, with my total workout time per week of about 4 hours. Hey Cameron, how important is deadlifting and squatting for rowing? I have always focused on my upper body in the gym because I wanted to build my upper body strength particularly back and shoulders. This was before I started rowing. Is it possible to build leg strength just from erging or do I need to incorporate deadlift squats as well?

      Incorpore legs, erg will not build your legs enough

    I recently done 6min 58 for 2k.
    How would I get to 6min 30??
    Do you think improving deadlift will help?

    Hey Cam, my 2k is 6.51, but I can barely get above 30 spm. Any suggestions on how to raise spm?

      With ur height that’s a great advantage. Coz it’s ur first 2km pace urself well and don’t burn out. If u hang off the handle and apply ur pressure affectively a sub 7:10 should be easy which is a 1:47.5 average split
