The original Crow is one of my favorite films of all time. Probably top 20. So this is a disappointment. Didn't need a remake or whatever you want to call it but I wish it would have at least been good. RIP Brandon Lee
Such a shame, the only thing I guess I can agree with why it could possibly be considered the worst film of the year is because how on earth do you fall THIS short of the original film.. The template was there. At the very least a Crow movie should not be boring
While I can say this, I still can get behind the visual style, and Bill Skarsgard as the Crow. But sadly, what kills this movie is the writing. If I were to compare this movie to any other Crow iteration, it’s less in line with the 1994 film and more like Wicked Prayer, just with a higher budget.
apparently according to the movie creators its a complete and total different random eric and shelly that are not the same as the og movie. what a choice : p
I agree with you that it’s strange they decided to develop a completely different Eric Draven and Shelley back story. To the point where you could have named them like Emily and Thomas and people (esp the fan base) actually may have enjoyed the film. I agree that there were soooo many missed opportunities that made a lot of the action feel unearned. I don’t know what the production hell was…. But it really feels like "One important Person" wanted the film to go one way (with the belief that it would make more money) and someone else (probably the writers) had a different vision that had they been able to tell it would probably have been really good. Visually the film is quite captivating! There are lots of visual metaphors and "mirrors" / "foils" which tell me the director and cinematographer had a clear idea of what type of story they wanted to tell from the beginning. I think they could have also leaned much heavier into the mysticism … but pairing it with the belief that their audience is intelligent and doesn’t need exposition to walk them through what’s happening. What I thought was an interesting/ weird / no real pay off choice was having both characters be in addiction recovery… but somehow that didn’t play into (in a very believable way) the cause of their deaths. It just didn’t do a good job of choosing the villains motivations. Like, why is Eric John Wicking through the Opera? … this could have made better sense had it been a sort of cobalt of elites and high power cover ups and black mail schemes (think P.Diddy) that somehow Shelley had been mixed up in. Darker? Yes. Better story telling? Absolutely. I guess this just felt too sanitized for the story they were trying to tell. There was a lot of potential here, and yes it missed the mark on a lot of stuff in so many avoidable ways…. But I disagree with everyone saying it was a bad film. It’s decently entertaining if you don’t take it too seriously and just watch it to enjoy watching a movie.
I can totally understand the basic idea of wanting to do a new adaptation - NOT a remake of the 1994 movie - but the trailer even looked terrible, so I agree, if the producer weren't confident in the quality, they should have changed the characters' name. I'll wait for this to go to streaming.
Well if you're making an adaptation you might want to be at least somewhat like what you are adapting. The comic is even more bleak and depressing than the original movie and had several parts changed or left out. (In the original they die in a completely random attack when their car breaks down, and the crow is constantly self harming cause he can't deal with his emotional pain for example). The whole theme of the comic is coming to grips with random senseless tragedy. It would have been possible to lean into that and make a darker crow than the original movie. But whatever that is they put on film does not resemble the crow graphic novel in the slightest.
Sean, love your common sense and your rewrites suggestions. I did not hear about the Liongate disclaimer. They should have that in the movie - tell about the crow lore and don’t call him Eric. I was thinking this was a remake, and I hated the changes they made. I would rather watch Borderlands. Someone at Liongate should be terminated for these bad choices.
It's still a piss poor adaptation of the comic. The comic is literally about dealing with senseless tragedy. Their death in the comics is even more senseless than in the movie. Their car broke down on a date and they were attacked by a street gang. A totally random attack.
@@markcarpenter6020Exactly. Even the ‘94 movie made it less random, but used a reason that would only make sense to a group of chaotic, evil creeps. It still worked pretty well as a “people meet a horrible death they didn’t deserve” motivation. This one just ignores that whole aspect.
@@6li8storm40 honestly in this one neither character is someone you can really root for in the original they were good people that had bad things happen to them. In this they are kinda crappy people who are targeted for for reasons. It's just weird.
Lol hearing she's got a past too... Seen something about him having a tear drop tat under his eye... They should really stick to the 80s and 90s for these movies... Wouldn't work in 2024. Plus cell phones. You'd have people calling Eric's boss trying to get him fired for attacking his murderers.
This was a really horrible remake. What I liked was Danny Huston as the villain. What he could do was interesting. The action violence scenes were awesome. I didn't like Bill Skarsgard as Eric or even The Crow. FKA twigs as Shelly, she was not believable one bit. The story dragged. The script might be the worst dialogue in 2024. I so badly wanted to fall asleep in the theater.
Recently came across your channel, and I really like your commentary! I know it isn’t that time of year, but I think a cool video idea would be “Ranking the winners of Best Picture from the past ___ years”. I see you have done rankings of nominees, but it doesn’t look like you’ve ranked the actual winners against each other. Keep up the good work!
*The OG Crow: the bad guy, Top Dollar, was committing insurance fraud by purchasing business and burning them down. "Arcade Games fell down, went boom." The minions blew the building up.
@@SeanChandlerTalksAboutI’ll send a crow to your house after training it somehow if I don’t see a ranking. I love that OG film and always love hearing your thoughts on stuff.
I am a fan of the classic The Crow, not planning to see the repulsive new version. I was the also director for the original original, low budget, indie, The Crow: A Funeral March, based on the comic book, it came out (locally, on VHS) 2 years before the film released.
I’m a HUGE movie enthusiast especially horror movies, aspiring business owner and actress. I’ve already watched 30 movie releases in the movie theater this year including the Crow remake. While I didn’t hate the Crow remake and there were elements I enjoyed about it overall it was a bland experience that pales in comparison to the original in both style and substance. This was another good movie review Sean. ❤❤❤❤
If you were a fan of the graphic novel it's even worse. They had already toned down the comic for the movie. The graphic novel is a lot more bleak and depressing than the movie. But the remake doesn't even resemble the graphic novel. The whole thing about the comic is it's about dealing with random senseless tragedy (in the comics they die during a random attack when their car breaks down). They could have leaned into that and made a faithful adaptation that would still be distinct from the originals more optimistic tone. Instead they created an entirely new story and stuck the crow name on it.
"Some drunk ass people took lots of drugs and wrote a script. then took a shit on the script and put it in a blender. then hired a herd of monkeys to put the pieces back together again. then taped it all to a wall and threw darts at a wheel of plot points. Shot a movie with a shitty camera and made it saturated in post production to fool the audience into thinking they're watching something pretentious. then marketed it as a guy slowly losing his mind in maybe purgatory. but it actually just makes you feel bad for the people who put money into the production."
The Crow Is one of my all time favourite films and yes, the only thing they had to do was change the names, that's it. Wouldn't have made the film better, which sounds even worse than I thought, but it would have saved them a Lot of hate
i hope this movie doesn’t sour too many people’s first impression of fka twigs, she’s a genuinely amazing musical artist and would recommend anyone to check out her music, it’s quite experimental and passionfilled
The OG is my favourite film, but I'm a greedy gal so was happy for more around the characters, I was happy to get a different take on it. Unfortunately I didn't enjoy the romanticised addiction and I just didn't feel invested in their relationship, it's all about the deep love and it just wasn't there. I enjoyed the last part where he emodbies the crow and we see the vengeance, it just took too long to get there
They could've used other names then... If anything the claim it's not them is dumber if it were true. Oh no it's not that Eric and Shelly... Like oh Yea that Tony Stark it's just Tony flying around in a Iron Man not that Tony and that's just Pepper not Pepper Potts. Takes a special kind of....
It was meh but it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought. The aesthetics and use of post-punk/ joy division and stuff were cool. When he was finally the crow after an hour and a half he was awesome.
As someone who knew nothing about this franchise (as in I didn't even know Brandon Lee passed away while filming it), I thought the trailer they played in front of Alien: Romulus looked pretty cool, but with how bad the reviews are I'll just wait for streaming
Just watched your 40 top movies from 2 years ago. I'm curious, there is one movie that's always in my top 5. So, have you ever seen The Fall (2006) by Tarsem Singh? If not. Please review it. If you can find it. It's top tier. As a film fan, it's one you need to watch if you haven't. Let me know please, Sir.
even the story of the comic is a little different from the 94 movie and even in the comic there are paranormal events, so even the 94 movie in some things is not the same as the original story, I who grew up with the 94 movie and watching this now? I can say that they didn't do a bad job, as a fan I would have also wanted some things differently, but overall it's a nice reinterpretation of the story
It's definitely changed in the original it got changed by studio execs because they didn't want all drama which the original story is action but Alot of sorrow and somber scenes and they didn't want all that darkness in the movie 😂 the TV show leans more in the comics with the drama and somber scenes
I thought the reason they kept the "Eric Draven" and"Shelley" characters was because they had to make a movie using the characters to keep the movie rights to the franchise.
Since Ive seen that you take your kids to watch some movies and do a review a review on them. What are the best and worst recent movies you seen with your kids. And can you do (I know this is a stretch to ask), a Viva Kids movie marathon? At the theater I work at, we primarily get kids movies, meaning when there's nothing new by main stream companies we get this really strange low quality movies that feel like they were bottom of the barrel last pick for anyone to take their kids too, and I want to see your opinions on these films.
In the original film they died because Shelley was trying to fight the rent and the cost in the area but was owned by the bad guy So they silenced her So they did kill her for a reason
The Crow (1994) is one of my favourite films. One I've always wanted to see in cinemas. I was able to for the 30th Anniversary this year and what an excellent experience. I won't be watching this.
I just came from the theater and I saw absolutely nothing wrong with this movie! I loved every bit of it. It was so good and I loved that they showed more of Eric and Shelley’s relationship it was amazing! I also loved how he did the face paint! Badass! Like I don’t understand why everyone is shitting on this movie? I am a huge Crow fan and I thought it was awesome from start to finish! Just a completely badass and amazing take on The Crow!
@@Fighttilltheend0136 I’m not kidding. I loved this movie I actually enjoyed it and thought it was badass. You guy’s are just shitting on it because you’re comparing it to the original! On its own it’s actually a really good movie!
If there were a ranking video, we all know what number 1 would be. The original Crow, is one of the greatest movies ever made. The rest however, fall very far from that first movie. A few are good, but the rest are awful. I haven't seen the new one yet, but I am not sure if it would be dead last based on how bad some of the other movies are. This one takes it a step further as far as desecrating Brandon Lee's memory by using the name Eric Draven.
Wasn't it because many actors walked out on it maybe they knew it was a bad movie. Maybe all the actors that work going to be on it turned it down ultimately because I can't hold a candle up to the original.
Oh boy 😂 well I enjoy the sequels as guilty pleasures so hopefully this will be one....seeing it tonight with a friend and still excited but low expectations!!
I like the original one and I thought this one could be interesting but it wasn't outside of some cool action and Bill Skarsgard trying his best it was just dull and to much about the love story that didn't interest me
I really enjoyed The Crow. I know that I'm in the minority thus far, but I struggled to find anything that actually bothered me about it. My one gripe is that the villainous characters lack personal idiosyncrasies, with the exception of the Big Bad. I'm glad it wasn't a shot-for-shot remake, because that would've definitely been a waste of time. I have always really liked the original, but it's put up on too much of a pedestal IMO. I respect anyone's opinion regarding this film or any other, as long as he or she has actually seen it; at least watch it before going off on it.
its not the original, not close. its a new retake. and i liked it. not any cinematic revelation, but its a decent popcorn flick for anyone new to the story. Lee was the best... 😌 there are just some actors you can't replace.
I agree in some aspects ok if you want to make another “revenge” movie 🎥 that’s fine but do not call it The Crow 🐦⬛ because it’s not the same as the original it will NEVER 👎🏻 be the same as the original call it something else or just leave the original ALONE
This crow movie is better than any of the crow sequels and tv show. It’s not that terrible of a movie. 3.5/5 it’s better than any of the Star Wars or marvel movies that have been coming out lately. Action is really good slow start but ignore the Brandon Lee film and you’ll be fine.
It sounds like what they did with the power rangers remake Where they don’t even put on their costumes until almost the end of the film And at the same time they kinda crapped all over the original series
I enjoyed the Power Rangers movie, thought it had a lot of charm. This just seems like a poorly made story, from all accounts. I'll still see it and make my own judgements but it doesn't feel too optimistic right now
I'm actually shocked and gobsmacked about how many critics and people are hating on this movie, but I guess at the same time, I was expecting it anyway. I actually think that the 1994 movie is bad and the new one is a good movie and actually way better than the original and i will explain my reasons later. Now, this will make alot of fans angry but one of the main reasons they are hating on this movie is because they think that it's nothing like the original 1994 version and that it's an insult to Brandon Lee's legacy. The original is just too overhyped, and most people only love it so much because of Brandon Lee's tragic death, and that somehow makes it special with some people even calling it the greatest movie of all time. If Brandon Lee had never died while making the movie, it would not be overhyped or popular as it is now. Some people would probably not even care about it. Brandon dying somehow made this movie holy and untouchable. People need to move on from the past and see the new one as its own movie instead of comparing it to the original. Just try to watch it with a clear mind. I'm not saying that you have to like it. That's your own opinion. I surprisingly loved all the things people hated about this, and I actually think the old one has the problems people are saying the new one has. Reasons why The Crow (1994) is bad. The movie felt bland and boring The acting was quite bad, and there were a lot of cringe and cheesy moments. The villains were forgettable There wasn't much action, and even if there was, it wasn't good We don't really know anything about Eric or Shelly and what their relationship was like when they were together. All we know is that they get killed, and he gets resurrected to get revenge. Why did it take 1 whole year for Eric to get resurrected Why does nobody really seem to care that a man just came back from the dead after a whole year. It's like they found out and didn't really care. They didn't question what the hell was going on and just went along with everything as if it's normal. The humour wasn't funny and didn't work for me. How does someone come out of their grave after 1 year looking so fine? We see him kissing Shellys spirit at the end, but how the hell does he get himself back into his grave. did he bury himself back into the grave, or did somebody do it for him. Now people are going to say that the new one has some of these problems as well, and yes, it probably does, but the 1994 version is way worse. All I'm saying is that The Crow (1994) is definitely not a masterpiece and is not as good as people praise it to be. The new one isn't a masterpiece either, but it is still way better.
"There wasn't much action, and even if there was, it wasn't good" You don't sound like you've even seen it to know. It gives you enough on Eric and Shelly to know they were good people who met a end that'd definitely fit what the Crow would be looking for. You know Shelly's last request as she was dying after going through the most horrendous things was for Eric to look after Sarah. You know that with how bad Sarah's home life is Shelly's request was likely because they were the only ones looking out for her. Meaning they pretty much adopted a stray. As for the Villains Top Money isn't a forgettable villain so good luck with that. His interaction with Skank is pretty memorable how you feeling? Like a little worm on a big.... Hook. I think you're letting your hatred for what you think people like something for rule you. You couldn't even name what you liked about Cuck 2024 the man who went to he'll over a draggy whre becoming the ultimate cuck.
As a fan of the original graphic novel I don't recognise this as being an adaptation. It's just a cash grab for Gen Z. It would have done better without anchoring itself the The Crow IP.
Just watched this movie yesterday via CAM Version and it was truly horrendous. Easily the second worst movie of 2024 just behind Madame Web (2024) and I'm giving it a 1/10.
They should have used a different character. There are like 23 different characters who become The Crow in the comics, they should have used one of them.
I like the first movie. I don't love it. I probably won't see this until it hits streaming but it's because I'm not really interested in the character to begin with.
I remember loving the original in '94 but i decided to watch it again last week and I'll be honest, i thought it was pretty shit. This one looks way better

Sean are you planning on doing a ranking on the crow films 🤔
The original Crow is one of my favorite films of all time. Probably top 20. So this is a disappointment. Didn't need a remake or whatever you want to call it but I wish it would have at least been good. RIP Brandon Lee
for me the OG crow and city of angles are my favs
Oh yea totally believe them... More like they realized the 💩 they were in and said uh....
Hopefully, they’ve learned their lesson and leave this property alone going forward. We have one great Crow movie and that’s all we need.
Just say No to The Crow.
and say HELL YES to 1994 crow and i dont know about everybody but for me i will also say HELL YES to 1996 the crow: city of angles
Will you rank all 5 of The Crow movies at least in a short or maybe in a short?
I'm not sure. I've watched all 5 movies (twice actually...besides the new one), but I'm not sure if there's interest or demand.
I would LOVE THAT.
@@SeanChandlerTalksAboutI’ll send a crow to your house after training it somehow if I don’t see a ranking. I love that OG film and always love hearing your thoughts on stuff.
@@SeanChandlerTalksAboutwas there interest or demand for your Spy Kids Ranking which you did a short ranking for?
I am a fan of the classic The Crow, not planning to see the repulsive new version. I was the also director for the original original, low budget, indie, The Crow: A Funeral March, based on the comic book, it came out (locally, on VHS) 2 years before the film released.
Lionsgate? More like the gates of movie hell.
If you've ever driven across the lion's gate bridge in Vancouver, you'd understand how apt the gate to hell metaphor is.
It was 90% “girl with the dragon tattoo” and 10% “the Crow”. Also, I couldn’t unsee Pennywise when looking at Bill OR the female lead. 😅
Matt Reeves or Robert Eggers
Would've made a peak crow film 🙏
i hope this movie doesn’t sour too many people’s first impression of fka twigs, she’s a genuinely amazing musical artist and would recommend anyone to check out her music, it’s quite experimental and passionfilled
Hollywood always does that it doesn't matter about Legacy than them
I love this channel. Gonna have to revisit the crow now
The OG is my favourite film, but I'm a greedy gal so was happy for more around the characters, I was happy to get a different take on it. Unfortunately I didn't enjoy the romanticised addiction and I just didn't feel invested in their relationship, it's all about the deep love and it just wasn't there. I enjoyed the last part where he emodbies the crow and we see the vengeance, it just took too long to get there
I grew up watching the first crow film I love it I'm still will watch this version I have seen all the sequels and the tv series stairway to heaven
Actually, they don't give Eric or Shelly a last name. You're giving them the last names from the 94 film all on your own volition.
Exactly. The comic didn't have last names where as the 94 film did.
Yup
They asked James to give them last names Alex asked
@@Fighttilltheend0136which makes even less sense....but still irrelevant to his point.
Watch the original instead. If nothing else it has one of the best soundtracks ever put to film.
Movie studios see Rupert Sanders make 2 terrible, critically panned movies based on beloved properties & thinks, "Let's give him another one."
I thought the same...out of all directors to make this lol. Dude must have connections.
I did not see the original. With that in mind should I go to the new?
Since Ive seen that you take your kids to watch some movies and do a review a review on them.
What are the best and worst recent movies you seen with your kids. And can you do (I know this is a stretch to ask), a Viva Kids movie marathon?
At the theater I work at, we primarily get kids movies, meaning when there's nothing new by main stream companies we get this really strange low quality movies that feel like they were bottom of the barrel last pick for anyone to take their kids too, and I want to see your opinions on these films.
In the original film they died because Shelley was trying to fight the rent and the cost in the area but was owned by the bad guy
So they silenced her
So they did kill her for a reason
Yup and the original story they were killed on the side of the road
😂 you're kidding right 😂 they made the crow demonic and appeal to teens of THIS generation the phone generation
@@Fighttilltheend0136 I’m not kidding. I loved this movie I actually enjoyed it and thought it was badass. You guy’s are just shitting on it because you’re comparing it to the original! On its own it’s actually a really good movie!
well i will wait till come out on cable for me my top 2 YES 2 is of couse the first one and city of angles.
I enjoyed the action a good bit, Skarsgard is solid, and its not a Morbius level disaster but its only average at best.
The Crow 2024 I would give it a 8 out of 10
Should have been a remake of city of angels. The idea was solid. The studio butched it
Did they just repurpose a Jared Leto Joker script?
I like the original one and I thought this one could be interesting but it wasn't outside of some cool action and Bill Skarsgard trying his best it was just dull and to much about the love story that didn't interest me
I loved this movie. I don't know what the negative reviews are about
Glad I'm seeing Strange Darling over this.
I was texting on my phone the whole time until the opera scene Brandon Lee Crow will forever be my favorite film forever
I agree in some aspects ok if you want to make another “revenge” movie 🎥 that’s fine but do not call it The Crow 🐦⬛ because it’s not the same as the original it will NEVER 👎🏻 be the same as the original call it something else or just leave the original ALONE
Please do a ranking of all the crow films
This crow movie is better than any of the crow sequels and tv show. It’s not that terrible of a movie. 3.5/5 it’s better than any of the Star Wars or marvel movies that have been coming out lately. Action is really good slow start but ignore the Brandon Lee film and you’ll be fine.
The original Crow is good, I seen it twice.
It sounds like what they did with the power rangers remake
Where they don’t even put on their costumes until almost the end of the film
And at the same time they kinda crapped all over the original series
The movie felt bland and boring
The acting was quite bad, and there were a lot of cringe and cheesy moments.
The villains were forgettable
There wasn't much action, and even if there was, it wasn't good
We don't really know anything about Eric or Shelly and what their relationship was like when they were together. All we know is that they get killed, and he gets resurrected to get revenge.
Why did it take 1 whole year for Eric to get resurrected
Why does nobody really seem to care that a man just came back from the dead after a whole year.
"There wasn't much action, and even if there was, it wasn't good"
You don't sound like you've even seen it to know.
Just finished watching the new crow movie, it seemed more like a raging River version of the Crow
As a fan of the original graphic novel I don't recognise this as being an adaptation. It's just a cash grab for Gen Z. It would have done better without anchoring itself the The Crow IP.
Why do people don't know this there's actually four Crowe movies
Being a massive fan of the original i refuse to watch this remake because i don't want it to tarnish branden lees legacy.
Just watched this movie yesterday via CAM Version and it was truly horrendous. Easily the second worst movie of 2024 just behind Madame Web (2024) and I'm giving it a 1/10.
So it seems Borderlands, Madame Web, and Thr Crow remake are competing for worst film of the year.
I love it and I love o.g too I enjoy all of them
I look this new The Crow (aka The Low) like Monty Python Flying Circus video.
They should have used a different character. There are like 23 different characters who become The Crow in the comics, they should have used one of them.
I liked this one more than the original
Technically he is not Eric draven he is just Eric just call him bob movie probably goes up about 15 percentage points on rotten tomatoes alone
I don't think I'll be seeing this one in theaters man
I just watched the Trailor and not impressed; I will say this, they didn't hold back on the gore.
I like the first movie. I don't love it. I probably won't see this until it hits streaming but it's because I'm not really interested in the character to begin with.
I LOVE the '94 movie. So angry they made this.
I remember loving the original in '94 but i decided to watch it again last week and I'll be honest, i thought it was pretty shit. This one looks way better
If you like Bill Skarsgard just watch Boy Kills World instead.
The only thing this has in common with the comic is the name of Eric and Shelly and title.
Yup
So fast 😮
Not yikes...
Rhymes with yikes.
But not yikes
It seems like August is the summer month studios park their junk they know is a mess. Borderlands and now this.
is it offensive if no one is going to see it? lol
Looks like Dante from DMC
They haven’t learned anything from the recent remakes or reimaginings that flopped
I think this movie needs a director's cut. Seems like it was cut to pieces
This is going to be one of those films that I skip lol
Either keep the script in a bottle forever or get Chris Nolan..
