- I do enjoy having a lunch out in the Land Rover while operating ham radio. I do not have a mobile HF radio set up in the vehicle as I never leave radios in there and setting up a permanent HF antenna on the Land Rover Discovery 2 requires a lot of bonding and messing about which I can't be bothered to do compared to having choices with portable antenna configurations. So I like to quickly deploy an antenna like this one that gets me on 40m, 20m and 17m.

The simple set ups always seem to work well.
My mate just drives up a mountain in his vehicle in the winter, and chills out with a bust set up and radio .not lots of camping gear, make the vehicle the house on wheels. You can go bush for weeks.

Agreed. M1ECC antennas are the quickest to deploy and adjust.
Been using my Lab599 TX500 for almost 2 years now. And with the m1ecc dx slidewinder a lot of the time. Usually use 3S LiPo packs as these are just about perfect combination of voltage, power and weight for operating portable. Also have a Tracer LiFePO4 24Ah pack for when weight not an issue.
Love the radio,. Generally CW and 5W for me, and lots of great DX in Australia and NZ from UK.

Also in a Discovery, but a 3 and I haven't broken down yet!

Great video Carl, Showing the fast & very easy setup of the Slidewinder Antenna, Goes very well with the Lab599 Radio.
I used to use the same antenna mount with the MFJ 17.5’ telescopic. Worked well. As long as the wind didn’t get up.
Of course North of the border. It’s cold, damp and comparatively dismal.

Thanks for the video Carl. My portable antenna of choice is a 40m band EFHW from Chris M0VUE, usually in an inverted-V with a 6m telescopic mast. Great lightweight design of a balun and winder integrated together, that you can chuck in backpack for POTA/SOTA. Look forward to seeing your video together.

I'm very interested in that radio, it looks like an excellent piece of kit. I want to do more outdoor radio and live between Dartmoor and Exmoor. It can be damp/humid here so might be worth thinking about. I'm not sure I can face a doughnut again though.
Carl. I like your tripod for your antenna, I believe that it is the quickest way to setup a portable vertical antenna, and it sure seems very sturdy. You also mentioned another favorite antenna of mine for portable operations the end fed half wave antenna, my two favorites for a quick setup and take downs, again, Carl, great job and thank you sharing and by the way, nice spot you chose to play radio.

Carl, just a warning, I had that exact same battery (8Ah version) and it lasted 10 months before I had to get a refund off Eco Worthy - which was very prompt after a few back and forth messages to be fair. I got a different brand also off Amazon now, same physical size. We'll see how it goes...

hi, great video as always! what was the yota and the next call sign? I have rewinded more than 50 times the video, but still not sure... HT23YOTA, JT23YOTA, HE23YUTA, JE23YOTA.......... is it possible to train the call sign listening?
