    When I finish sanding my glass slides I apply clear nail polish on the sanded edge to shine it up a little. Great video!

    looks like you made 3 use able pieces out of 1 bottle. the piece you broke off the glass will make a good funnel to use in the shop for finishes. easy to clean up since its glass

      +Chad Lowrance that's what a friend of mine just said too. I didn't even think of that. Great idea.

    I think I need to score around twice or use tape because today I got 1 out of 4 right. 3 were rather narley & dangerous looking. I really like this video. Besides your little helper was adorable. Thanks for sharing.

      I sometimes get results like that. I have scored around a couple time before myself. Its tricky to keep the cutter exactly in the previous cut. It can be done though.

    I've done this before, watched your video to see if you had a different technique but it's the same way I do it. I've found that a tapered candle works well though, gives off a nice tall flame and heats the glass faster.

      @homebuiltshop  6 років тому

      I have since tried a couple different techniques to see if something works better. So far this works great. 👍

    Is there enough playing area on the screw top to play on a six string?

      For this particular one there is. I'm not sure if all bottles are though.

    I just went out to the shed and cut some stainless steel pipe took 30 seconds - 10 seconds to cut and 20 to file and it has a nice sound, what's the benefit of glass over steel?

    • @homebuiltshop
      @homebuiltshop  5 років тому

      I can hear a tiny difference in sound. I think its personal preference really.

    • @brianking5092
      @brianking5092 5 років тому

      I have glass, brass and steel slides. I have noticed that the biggest difference shows up on wound strings. The glass slide makes almost no noise as it glides over the rough windings on the strings. The brass has a little noise and the steel makes the most noise. If you are going to be wailing on the guitar it probably makes no difference. If you are trying to play something mellow I would go with glass. I normally play with glass on my dreadnought guitar (Mellow), brass on my wood body spider resonator (Country), and steel on my three string cigar box (Raspy blues & spirituals, don't care what you think, I'm gonna have a good time). Plastic/PVC tends to deaden the sound. I have not tried any ceramic slides so I cannot comment on those.

    Thanks for this video. How can you score the glass so easy with the glass cutter ? It seems you dont have to apply much preasure. When I try to score my bottles I can't make it. If I press harder the glass cutter slips away. I've watched your video several times. Is there a trick?

    • @homebuiltshop
      @homebuiltshop  6 років тому +1

      Not a trick that I'm aware of. I just listen for the scoring sound. If I dont hear that scratching sound it makes, then I press a little harder. 👍

    • @franciscohernandez99
      @franciscohernandez99 6 років тому

      Do you mean pressing from gently to harder until you hear the scratching sound? Ok, I have to press harder, but I can't get a continous and straight line of the score. As I wrote, the glass cutter slips always. I've tried several cutters...

    • @homebuiltshop
      @homebuiltshop  6 років тому +1

      Yes, in my experience of you dont hear the scratchy sound, it's not scoring right. Make sure you aren't leaning the scoring wheel. Try to keep it at 90 degrees to the surface. I know what you are experiencing with it slipping, just trying to help sort it out. Having a wrap of tape on there helps too. It gives the wheel a little something to ride against.

    When I make them, I do another cut to take off the threaded part of the bottle neck.

    I asked a local bar to save me wine bottles.

    My mom said her grandfather would tie a kerosene soaked string around the score line, set it on fire and when it burned out, dunk it in water. This was for making drinking glasses out of bottles.
