Three of the first lures I remember having in my tackle box as a kid were a floating Rapala, a red & white Daredevil spoon, and Mepps inline spinners. Didn't need much of anything else. They worked 50 years ago, and still work now.

In-line spinners are amazing! Some of them you can’t change out the hook so I cut the treble hook eye take it off and put on a split ring. Now I can use a small offset and small plastic and make it weedless.

Inline spinners are fish catching machines. One time, I was sitting on my kayak 20 yards from my buddy. Fishing was slow. That's when I tied on a #2 black fury. From the first cast, I started catching bass. Caught about 20 in about an hour. I call it the old forgotten lure.

I’m a kid who spends a lot of time hanging out with “serious” bass anglers. It’s just never been talked about and has always been considered a “kids bait.” Well, this kid doesn’t want to seem like any more of a kid. Until, I couldn’t get bit on anything and for the first time ever threw one. BOOM, second cast a decent lil largemouth hits it, and gets two hooks in the side of his face (YUP they eat it GOOD). The inline spinner now holds a special place in my heart. Also, I didn’t hear you talk about the Strike king Bitsy Spinner, but that right there is a quality little bass spinner!

Hey Matt, I fish ponds and small lakes from the bank and I have an in-line spinner tied on all the time. I catch more with it than I do with a spinnerbait. I use no’s. 3, 4 and 5. It flat out catches fish and it is a lot of fun to throw.

WOW!! I can't believe you let this one out of the bag. With so much click bait on UA-cam it's hard to find the real deal. I've been doing using them on Bass forever. I was fishing once with them when a former BassMaster Classic winner and Angler of the year was filming a videos near me and asked what I was using since the bite was tuff. I told him a Mepps inline and he laughed. He said that that's a big secret on the tours and he couldn't use that on the video. So, if a classic winner, angler of the year and multiple blue trophies and MLF trophies is trying to keep it a secret it was cool you said it. Keep up the great job.

I grew up fishing mepps spinners and the old style eppinger red and white and black and white daredevil spoons. It's about time someone brought up one of these old style lures. Caught a lot of fish on the old style spinners. You should make a video about the old Eppinger and little Cleo spoons as well. Caught my personal best largemouth (7+ pounder) when I was about 12 years old trolling on Cross Lake in upstate NY on a zebco spincast combo with a red and white daredevil spoon.

Absolutely classic lures. While I primarily fish for Bass, I'm happy to catch anything and that's a big part of what I love about in-line spinners... You really never know what's going to bite them. Another great thing about them is that they're damn near indestructable. Worst you're gonna do is bend out a hook or let it rust.

When I fish #4 or #5 Mepps and Blue Fox spinners I cut the treble hook off and, using a split ring, add a screw lock weighted swim bait hook. I usually use a tube bait as a trailer. The single weighted hooks helps eliminates line twist and snags.

I did a upgrade video on my channel a while back about rooster tails specifically, cut the stock hook off #2 split ring and your personal favorite flavor of treble hook. Personally I’m a fan of the size 4 mustad ultra point feathered hood, bonus it’s ewg style. Rooster tails have the skirt on the body of the bait so by adding a feathered hook to a 1/4 rooster you end up with a big body lighter weight spinner. Works great for bass and only the big trout can take the hook, the little trout will hit it and miss.

I fished this very small lake in western ny for a few hours using the traditional go to baits that will catch something 99% of the time, and I couldn't get a bite. So I gave up on the bass and put a small Musky spinner (double 6 blade ) on for Pike, and 10 minutes later, I caught a 5.5lb bass. I tossed it out maybe 10 times and caught a 6.4lb bass, and in the next 2hrs I caught two low 5lb'ers and 5.9lb. One of them had an 8in bullhead halfway down its throat and still choked the whole spinner 😆. I made a few more trips back and caught another 20 fish in the 5lb range using the musky mayhem micro/ baby girl spinner. I tried everything, but the big ones would only eat the spinners, and this was 52-55 degree water temps, 4-6ft depth and burning it fast enough to keep it skimming the top of the grass. 🤷‍♂️

One of the reasons I don't use in line spinners too much anymore is because it's so hard to unhook a fish with his jaw shut tight over three hooks in a treble hook! ... on the subject of legendary and forgotten lures... So have you ever fished with and/or do you maybe still have a timber spin? Killer under certain lily pad and submerged vegetation situations. I've been thinking of buying hardware to make my own since they're not made anymore.

For highland impoundments id go with the pearl shad tail and chartreuse shad tail www.tacklewarehouse.com/Mepps_Bronze_Slammer_Inline_Spinner/descpage-MBSI.html?from=MSFG

Hey Matt how do I sign up for that thing where I can ask you questions for an hour? I fish all the right spots with the right baits and just don't seem to catch them very well. I average about 1 fish every trip or 2. Idk what I'm doing wrong

🍺I believe you recently posted a video of when you caught pike and bass in numbers with a In-line-spinner. I think it made your top 10 of last season.

What is your solution to dealing with line twist that is inherent to inline spinners?

  • @jim8537

Yep. Still use some of the old classics today. By the way, I'm 70 years young. The old baits still catch 5-pound bass.

I fished mepps for years buying them in all colors for bass and northerns. I even fished them in bass tournaments using them in thin cover, open water cover, over the top of wood and grass. They have been moved to the back of the bus because of the times where fishing compaction pushing all these new baits. Tell you the truth in the right hands those old baits would out fish the new ones 💯💯💯💯💯👍🏽

Hi , i got a question, can i use a spinning rod medium heavy for a 3/8 oz Chatterbait? Since i fish on shore on a dock?

Mepps spinner is the best multi-species artificial there is. Salt, fresh, arctic to sub tropic. They may not catch the biggest, but they'll catch something.

Always kept a rod rigged with a smaller spin for my young son to throw if the bass bite got slow or far in-between bites. Kept him from getting bored

I don't like the double blade spinners on the market so I make my own, by cutting the treble hook of a quarter ounce panther martin, then put on a split ring and attach to a number two blade blue fox. Both blades spin freely and it catches fish.
