In 1975, when the western-genre seemed to dissolve from the big screens, movies like “Bite The Bullet” can be seen as the last representatives of an era, which got audiences into cinemas over decades and even generations.
The story about a 700 mile horse-race, written and directed by Richard Brooks, starring Gene Hackman, Candice Bergen, James Coburn and others was a well done and well received movie. Surprisingly, it is not as known today - well, maybe less surprising, if you think about Steven Spielberg’s shark conquering the globe at that time. Next to “Jaws” many movies of that period didn’t get too much attention. However, “Bite The Bullet” managed to receive two Academy Award nominations (not bad for a western, at all), winning one for best sound. The other was for the music of the great Alex North. When the score begins to play, you immediately know it’s North with his unmistakable style, paired with a rather traditional attempt of writing music for a western. The score is a fun-ride but comes around with some lovely interludes, such as “The Foal” as well. Enjoy!

It's really quite a good movie. I have it on DVD. Lots of suspense as you wonder who's going to win and what that GIRL is doing in the middle of it (and a very competent girl she is, too). And don't forget the great Ben Johnson!

A fine western film for people who truly love horses. I've rarely seen a western film where the horse is treated so well in a film and not just as either a visual prop, or as the cowboys tool with no affection or relationship for the animal he rides on. I've seen perhaps thousands, of western film epics and short films and television series with men and women riding horses and having horses pull wagons and carts and this was truly one of the very few films that I can think of that I've ever seen aside from "The Professionals" and "Silverado" where there are people in the film who truly care about their horses. I'm very fond of the stunt horse in "The Scalphunters" (who in my opinion steals the film). I've seen in a few John Wayne films and others where The Duke or some lead character will say "See to your horses." But the horses are not really there as anything more than tools, might as well be a hammer or a car. They have no names or personality. Usually what happens is the main leads will ride up and some unknown wrangler will just "take the reins" and lead the horses off the set and out of the frame.

You can't go wrong with this fine western directed by Richard Brooks (THE LAST HUNT, THE PROFESSIONALS) featuring a thrilling score by Alex North (THE WONDERFUL COUNTRY, CHEYENNE AUTUMN).

this film, which delights me every time I see it; I cannot help thinking about Mr. Ben Johnson {uncredited I think}, he plays the role of an anonymous character {Mister}, he loses his life in this masterpiece close of a campfire after telling his life story; {his life as an actor in fact}, a brief reminder to all the tens of thousands of people, died anonymous, who built; the United States of America.
their bones are everywhere always in this country, anonymous.

Thanks for Mr. North, Fred, he's one of my favorites. Spartacus, Cleopatra, Member of the Wedding, the Bad Seed, Street Car Named Desire, his summer scores: the Long Hot Summer, The sound and the fury, and the man never won an oscar.

No, he didn't win for any specific film but received an honorary Oscar in 1986 for his body of work. A great composer indeed, Bite the Bullet is a favorite score and film, as is many others.
