      The EU is hardly “going great”. The Netherlands has just exited a recession, Germany is in chaos with a weak coalition government, France is even worse with a plunging stock market and the risk of a huge rise in borrowing. I think you are mistaken. The EU is going to face a large number of structural - and political - challenges over the next 5 years. Germany’s automobile sector is weak and has not invested sufficiently in the transition to EVs; it has few high performing universities and a mittelstand which has insufficient funds to invest. The only bright spots are Italy and Spain.

    From Frost's Wikipedia entry: "Frost left HM Diplomatic Service in 2013 to become CEO of the Scotch Whisky Association, a trade association.[3] In 2015, in a hearing before the Scottish Parliament, he argued in favour of the UK's membership in the EU, noting that for a Briton on an average salary, the benefit of the UK being a member of the EU was around £1,500 a year.[5]... It was in his capacity as CEO that he wrote an article before the Brexit referendum[7] for Portland Communications, in which he supported the case for remaining in the EU's Single Market and said that leaving it would be "fraught with economic risk".

    Britain managed to vote itself out, but won't be able to vote itself back in.
    Joining the EU:
    If the UK (for whatever reason) wants to join the EU, it will end up at the end of the queue, like every other country that wants to join the EU club and it will have to start from scratch.
    Not yet to talk about the criteria's that need to be fulfilled, before being able to join the EU/27 member states, i.e. "accepting the Euro €, requirement that a state has the institutions to preserve *democratic governance and *human rights, has a functioning market economy and accepts the obligations and intent of the European Union."
    Just a little reminder:
    The UK's applications to join in 1963 and 1967 were vetoed by the President of France, Charles de Gaulle. While it was true that Britain's economy, like many others, was struggling to recover from the high cost of WW2, De Gaulle had personal as well as economic reasons for not wanting the British around the table.
    Brexit campaign and referendum:
    During and after the Brexit referendum campaign, Britain has not stopped to display their hate against the EU as well as campaigning to leave the ECHR for the simple reason that it contains the word "Europe" in it.
    * Human Rights and Democracy:
    - isn't it the UK with its Tory government and their friends from the far-right business company Reform UK Ltd, who are campaigning to leave the ECHR and by doing so, are taking away the Human Rights of its population?
    There already is the first hurdle and more of them are: not respecting international laws and by breaching them i.e. UNHCR Refugee/Asylum Seeker Conventions 151 and its 1967 Protocol. Who on earth would like to have a country like that as a club member?
    Furthermore, is it really the democratic will of the British public to lose their Human Rights and to see their Equality Act going up in flames? Think about that. The UK would be well advised to join Belarus and Russia instead.
    One cannot join the EU like taking a bus, a taxi, a train, a plane when it suits the political and/or the financial agenda and then tell the EU to f* off after having milked it financially for decades.
    The EU/27 member states have certainly reasons enough, to reject any future application for a UK candidacy as a future EU member state and it will not come as any surprise.

    A second referendum is essential. And sooner rather than later. There are immense benefits to being in the EU. We can't wait for half century as Rees-Mogg has suggested. It's nuts. The simplicity of a referendum can hardly be described as "suffering". The government will have a clear mandate to proceed.

    It’s absurd. The Tories pushed for brexit which requires a massive effort by the government to establish trade deals, build out customs and immigration infrastructure, work with various industries to drive pro-business policy ,,, but the Tories are libertarian, they don’t want any government. So they drove a policy that required bigger government just as they decided they were libertarian so they did nothing.

    Recently had to import from UK to Spain where I am British Citizen and Spanish Resident. Had to pay for goods a higher price in UK and a supplementary non optional fee to Fedex for handling importation taxes and Spanish cutoms administration as transporter.
    Net result UK exports from small to medium companies more expensive and uncompetitive. Frost and Boris with their oven ready deals was a complete deception and total lack of adequate trade negotiations to leave EU.
    A complete let down by them to represent interests ok UK citizens.
    Frost and Boris thankfully are a laughing stock now internationally.

    The only way to get into EU again, is when the Tories think it is a good idea, then Labour can join the choir. If Labour initiates movement towards EU, the Tories will resist and EU will shut the door. EU will insist on all major parties wants to join.
    So pressure the Tories in the future and if they feel it will buy them votes, so maybe one day they are ready. The Tories really has to be treated and manipulated like a difficult child.

    Frost is pretty much right. Brexit is done. You can of course go into bilateral agreements outside the scope of the TCA aka Brexit deal, like Erasmus. But on trade nothing substantial can change. Like James O'Brain says, "the simple question of trade free movement of goods even if we have full alignment with the European Union we will not have access", "the Four Freedoms are indivisible so even if you agree to sign up to all EU regulation on trade they'll still have to do checks", "you cannot unilaterally align your way out of post brexit border check"

    • @trident6547

      UK failed to honour even the most basic WTO requirements to set up the state agencies, bodies, institutions and departments that define the standards and regulations that it holds itself to, let alone implement them, enforce them, or make them available to potential partners to inspect in order to establish equivalence.
      A third country has not only to demonstrate complete alignment with the standards and conducts concerned, but also must have developed those institutions and practices within the state whereby alignment can be measured and proven to exist, let alone achieved. This applies to EFTA membership/EEA participation as much as to EU membership, though the scope and scale may differ in respects other than those the four freedoms demand in either case.

These EU rules are there for a reason. And I doubt that the EU will just let this happen, a black money market on the doors of Europe.

  • @dooley-ch
    @dooley-ch Місяць тому +2

    Of course the difference is that Labour are going to have to try and honor their commitments....
    And the reality is that joining the EU is not possible and very unlikely to ever be possible unless the pain gets an awful lot worse. The UK is not a democracy according to EU membership criteria, as demonstrated by Boris using the King's Prerogative. The EU have enough of this kind of stuff from Poland and Hungry, so no chance they want a third member state to join those two. Then there is the need to accept the Euro and a need for a very big paradigm shift in the UK mindset - economic pain is not enough to justify membership - been there, done that in the case of the UK and not going to happen again.
    As for negotiations, well that is not with the 27 member states as some think, but with 38 regional and national parliaments, the EU parliament and the electorates of France, Denmark, Ireland and in some cases The Netherlands. It is very unlikely the governments of any of those countries would be willing to hold such a divisive referendum on the the future of the UK and if they did and the voters said NO, what next for the UK??? So membership of the EU is very unlikely to happen on any basis but fully meeting the EU membership criteria.
    It is not what most want to hear, but Labour's position is probably the most realistic.
