honesly if you spam shogitai then you can just banzai and charge in and you will win most of the time, since the AI doest use gun unit against melee unit well and they tend to blob up = free kill for shogitai. Unless AI have too much imperial guard infantry otherwise you have no problem at all. but traditional unit sucks in autoresolve so its kinda annoy having to fight most of the battle
Traditional armies actually do pretty well against AI (perhaps in multiplayer too, I didn't play much FotS MP so I wouldn't know). You of course have to know to use them like attacking from the flanks rather than front, using reverse slopes for cover such that the enemy only gets one volley off before melee ensues, or taking advantage of indirect fire capabilities of bow kachi. And of course assassinating enemy general with yari ki. But traditional units beat line infantries really hard in melee even if they start one volley of men short, so 1:5 casualty ratios or better are achievable. The biggest problems are not being able to autoresolve, and some unavoidable casualties if the enemy has artillery supriority, which they have by default since traditional armies won't use artillery.
Full traditional is the way to be. Front line of ashigaru to soak up those beta bullets followed by screaming pajama katana bois. Buzzsaws through tofu.
