Thanks to both of u for saying the quiet part out loud! As a black woman in the country, it’s exhausting to work so hard for equality and be told that the lived experiences of generations doesn’t exist! I’ll spend the next 4 years creating a nurturing environment for myself and those I love. I have already grieved the dream that equality will never exist in my lifetime because America will never be willing to call a thing a thing. We can never move forward without acknowledging and validating the truth! In just 60 years, my parents had more rights than their great grandchildren! On positive note, once this version of democracy ends…maybe a more inclusive democracy can arise. 🌺🌺
You and I interpreted the conversation slightly different. I heard Meachem say in quite, calm, and pompous tone, "Americans have been historically crap. This is just a time in a cyclical political when we are crap again, so don't sweat it. This is not a major problem, personally, so it isn't really big deal. You never know, something good might just magically happen when you least expect it. Okay bye, back to reading my book.

Not comfort; more like a temporary bromide. Our populace has reelected a cancerous administration that will hasten the final unraveling of a society that started to move toward real-if imperfect-egalitarianism with FDR's fixes to the social contract during the Depression and, well, finished with LBJ, but continued a bit (weirdly) with Nixon's EPA through to Carter's warnings. And Meacham still waxes abstract and poetic here about "autocratic tendencies" in response to globalization? How does navel-gazing right now help?
@@Dee-x9fMan, do I agree. Listening to historians like Meacham is how we got the vapid rhetoric of the Democratic Party over the last decade. Would have been nice for Jon Meacham to have been given one of those medal of freedom by President Biden in this last go-around of awarding those medals. What a fantastic historian and contributor to our collective body of knowledge.
Yes and I think a special medal should be created and awarded to Jon Stewart. I can think of plenty reasons but can't settle on what it might be called. :)
I think this is one of the best episodes to date. Nailing why so many feel weary by a second Trump win but also being able to call back to history and say we have to keep fighting to make it better. Perfection.
John Stewart, I have been a fan forever, and thank you for still speaking truth to power. Sometimes the truth hurts which makes the messenger strong and important. Comically or otherwise. We need your intelligent voice.
I really needed this. I started listening feeling exhausted, brain weary. I go to bed like that and wake up like that and have for a year. Now I can't stop smiling. Jon Stewart always makes me smile and think, but Jon Meacham took it to a place unexpected. Great minds, great conversations. Thank you. :)
I have been watching you since the beginning and you have not changed. You always brought logic with laughter. Like Carlin did, you point out the obvious. I loved this episode, the history lesson with Mr Meachan helps give current events more perspective. Thank you!!
This episode of The Weekly Show with Jon Stewart and Jon Meacham is so compelling because it delves into understanding American history honestly-without denying what that history is or has been-and examines how it has brought us to this moment. Meacham’s perspective highlights the lessons history is supposed to teach us, particularly how to avoid repeating past mistakes. Yet, we see a nation starkly divided: 51.1% of people seem intent on repeating those same mistakes, as if they never happened, while the other 49.9% are working to avoid them and prevent those in power from making them again. The conversation's depth comes from its refusal to sugarcoat history or romanticize it, instead presenting a clear-eyed view of how we arrived at this point. It underscores the tension between those clinging to nostalgia without critical reflection and those striving to learn from history to forge a better path forward. This honest reckoning with the past, coupled with an analysis of its impact on our present and future, makes the episode profoundly resonant-revealing the critical importance of understanding history to navigate the challenges ahead.
Speaking as a Canadian, the Bennett McNicol approach is alive and well with LA Fires and Canadian support. We help each other because we all could be stuck in a barrel at some time.

So nice to have intelligent conversation amid the dross that passes as journalism in America today. A flicker of hope, thank you so much Mssrs. Stewart and Meacham.
Jon Stewart expresses so eloquently, exactly what I feel. At moments like these I look for some historical perspective to get through the times. We all hate what is ahead of us, but are helpless to stop the disaster coming up. So we have to lean on sane people like Stewart, Colbert and John Oliver to give us some perspective and solace. I feel like someone in the family is diagnosed with cancer, and the upcoming treatment is a nightmare….but hopeful that things end up ok at the end.
I could have been, should have been doing something else this Saturday afternoon (here in Denmark); yet I am so thankful I stopped and listened to this mind bending time. Thank you Jon & Jon.
Yea also the left pandering to immigration to much. They spread their Tent, they tried to galvanize the Latino vote over blacks honestly. Black males align with white males especially the Malcom X types. DRMs are soft
This is honestly one of the best takes I've ever seen. The BEST takes on the emergence of Trump and other populists. A genuine reaction to the ATTEMPT at a genuinely multi-ethnic, multinational country. Truly rare to see such a thoughtful response from an American, and truly comforting too.
Mr. Stewart, Jon Meacham was the most well spoken, insightful, and humorous guest you've interviewed in the 15 to 20 years Ive been watching you. Thank you for bringing him on, you and he both are fresh air when we need it the most.
Jon, please run for president. You are the only one who has the communication skills and the public profile that is required to cut through the noise to truly speak to the American people. We see that qualifications don’t really matter anymore, so don’t let that stop you. Your family may not want you to for understandable reasons, but they surely don’t want to live in a country that we are heading towards.

I ADORE Meacham! He's so intelligent and learned AND he has a sense of humor! This is a GREAT video! LOVE IT!
Oh, love Jon Meacham. Soul of America was phenomenal. I was happily surprised to see him as a guest. Good stuff.
Will watch anything with Meacham.
It sounds as though so will I. I will watch anything with Jon Stewart, so I guess I'll be becoming familiar with Jon Meacham!
I will too!
Me too
Meacham is an incredible historian
Well nobody watches Morning Joe anymore so get him on other shows more.
What a wonderful, thoughtful, educational ... and entertaining ... conversation!
This is the most wonderful, brilliant, good humored amid utter disaster conversation I’ve ever heard on a podcast. If there’s no other silver lining to the moment this will serve. ❤👏
Another episode that proved to be both enlightening and entertaining. I have been a longtime fan of Meacham but never had seen this side of him. Please bring him back again soon.
agree!
The medal of TRUTH?!❤
@ Rachel Maddow is another one who I think should be recognized for her contribution to democracy and professionalism in journalism. Amazing lady...
Thank you so much. It was such a pleasure listening to two intelligent and compassionate men.
My absolute two favorites!! Dang I was excited to see this duo!! Both of these voices of reason have saved my sanity over the last 8 yrs ❤️❤️
Thank you both for the therapy session, it worked wonders! ❤❤
I think this is one of the best episodes to date. Nailing why so many feel weary by a second Trump win but also being able to call back to history and say we have to keep fighting to make it better. Perfection.
Nothing better to hear from two intelligent men 👍🏾
You both made my afternoon.
I am so glad you are back! I think you are doing a great job. Thankful you are here to help us get through this ❤ PS please have Jasmine Crockett on 😊
If this moment is a mirror, we are effing ugly. 😢
we were ugly last time now we're 8 years uglier with the entire world on "groundhog day"
not just ugly, dumber than the dumbest frog sitting on the dumbest pad floating on the dumbest pond in Ohio
Im counting on the pendulum swinging back but in the meantime unfortunately, more suffering😔
Understatement of the century
We are, indeed, ugly.
What a wonderfully insightful hour! Love you both!
John Stewart, I have been a fan forever, and thank you for still speaking truth to power. Sometimes the truth hurts which makes the messenger strong and important. Comically or otherwise. We need your intelligent voice.
We most certainly do!
A very enlightening conversation. Its so refreshing to hear intelligent speakers. More, please.
Thank you!!
two men who are national treasures
What a great guest, smart and funny!
Speaking as a Canadian, the Bennett McNicol approach is alive and well with LA Fires and Canadian support. We help each other because we all could be stuck in a barrel at some time.
Thanks for opening up with John Meacham. It’s always a learning experience to hear him pontificate.
Chattanooga native here! We love Meacham and always enjoy hearing him speak when he’s back in town. This was much needed therapy before our world goes downhill for the next four years ❤
Meacham is a great guest and this is a very good start to your 2025 season.
Sublime...what a treat!
Love both these guys. Didn't know who Jon Meacham was but now I feel the need to start reading his books. Thinking about starting from his first book to most recent. Jon Stewart is just NAILING this conversation. Thanks so much to both.
Yeah, he is ALWAYS very interesting and this was a great pairing of minds!
9:12-9:30!!! Jon M hit the nail on the head!!!!
Thank you for the sanity! I don’t’ think I have inhaled since Nov 5, thanks for opening a path back to breathing again. Can’t wait to see the next show. Don’t disappear, we need you!! Thanks again 💙
While I don’t have many, Jon Meacham is one of my favorite presidential historians! Great interview!
I LOVE seeing Jon Meacham in a more informal format. Great interview. I'm adding him to my "death dinner table group". Love that he makes his kids go to events like my history teacher dad made me go on all the damn historic walks in the northeast during my childhood.
My parents took me to DC when I was little. I remember visiting a NJ Congressman…I remember his coffee table was shaped like NJ. I’m 60 now and really appreciate what they did.
This conversation was such a pleasure to hear. Thanks to both J. Stewart and J. Meacham for making it so relevant.
Yeah! That's how I feel too! Not looking forward but....
Welcome back, Jon! Missed ya!💙💙💙💙💙💙
I could have been, should have been doing something else this Saturday afternoon (here in Denmark); yet I am so thankful I stopped and listened to this mind bending time. Thank you Jon & Jon.
What a lovely way to spend an hour - love you both!
Biden made two terrible mistakes; Merrick Garland and running for reelection.
Yea also the left pandering to immigration to much. They spread their Tent, they tried to galvanize the Latino vote over blacks honestly. Black males align with white males especially the Malcom X types. DRMs are soft
Happy you are back. Thanks for having Jon Meacham on.
This has been a gem of a show. So enjoyable and informative. Fascinating and entertaining!
Jon & Jon. My new favourite duo. Will need them regularly in the Trump 2.0 era.
Churchill said, "You can count on the US to do the right thing, but only after it exhausts all other options."
We the people 🇺🇸❤️😇
Jon and Jon as running mates…the old white Jons that we didn’t know we’ve always been waiting for
I agree 💯
He could win.
It would be too much of a pay cut for him.
Love love LOVE the pod. John Meachem so good. History; laughter; snideness; all my fav's!! So smart. I learned some things. Just DAMN GOOD. Will be listening every week. THANK YOU.💌💌💌💌
“We did it for a box of pears.”
I love John M.
And Jon S.
What a great program with my 2 favorite people. I could listen to Jon Meacham every day. Thank you both for a very knowledgeable, interesting and at times humorous look into what we are all going to be dealing with the next 4 years.
What an amazing duo. Part 2, please.🤗
YES...Please???
Jon Stewart has an amazing crew. I enjoy their discussions as much as the podcast. ❤
I will listen to John Mecham and it helps to calm me down and start to believe in
Two extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic people! Love both Johns.
It is so refreshing to hear two educated and intelligent people discuss the state of our country and it not being a broadside for either party. Both sides have flaws, both have strengths, and to see all of them brought out and not hidden is pretty thought provoking.
"Both sides" are definitely NOT the same. No concerning, thinking person would ever come to that conclusion at this point in time. Do explain, if possible, how you come to this conclusion.

Agreed! My god there is nothing comparable between the Democratic Party & MAGA. Ppl must understand that the current Republican Party is NOT the party of Bush, Romney or McCain but an existential threat to the continuation of liberty in this country
I was just as exasperated as you when I saw this comment…then 62 other ppl show their ignorance by liking it
If we’re gonna be “the resistance,” we’re not off to a very good start
What strengths do the GOP have in terms of actual policy?
@@matthewcaldwell8100
Exactly…absolutely zero
Ppl need to stop fucking normalizing the current GOP & Dump or this’ll be over by the summer or spring
I have had such a huge crush on John Meacham for YEARS! He comforts me too!❤
