- The very first of many collab videos with my dearest friend @emmiereads
:)
Hi Friends!
After 3 wonderful years of friendship, Emma and I finally met each other in person! Last week was one of the most memorable times of my life, and I'm so grateful to have captured some of it for you to see!
In this video, Emma compiled a list of first lines and I had to guess which books they were from!
I went in feeling pretty confident and left feeling...well, you'll see!
...oh...and to make it more interesting we decided that the loser had to buy the winner a book, so you'll have to look out for Emma's video to see who is buying who a book!
I'd just like to thank you all for being so excited for us finally meeting each other! The fact that you care about our friendship means the world! (feeling so lucky to have such wonderful friends through this community...yourselves included)!
I hope you enjoy this video as much as we enjoyed filming it!
Best wishes,
Carolyn Marie :)

It seems that Calcifer has all the answers. 🐈
Indeed he does 😂
This is the crossover I have been waiting for ALL THIS TIME. I love it.
Awww us too!!
The way Emma said “Kukushkin” on 8:25 was on point!
Ikr! I though the same
I’ll just watch this and pretend you’re still here🥹
same 🥹
Emmie in the house! Woot woot! 💕
Fun - now when will you be able to take a trip south to NY? : )
@@michael_arcturus that’s the question! NY next she would be in my state! 😊☺️
That's fr so sweet
My favorite first line from this video has to me "meow meow MEOW"! Absolutely soul shattering ... (Love you both!)
My cat was all ears!!
OMG when Emma spoke the first 5 words of crime and punishment I just knew it right away I cant believe and i read so long ago in a different language! just love that book
The fact that I immediately guessed Crime and Punishment because I'm finding it hard to read (continuously) and kept repeating the beginning so I can remember what happened🥲
Oh my goodness 🥲🤣
Oh no 😹😹
I love that title “this was humbling”!!🤣😂 Cannot wait to watch! You and Emma bring me such joy and I learn a ton from you guys! 🥹Literally smiling from ear to ear and I hope you had an INCREDIBLE time in Toronto Carolyn!! 🥰🍁📚
This warms my heart immensely!! 🥹🥰😭 You all bring us so much joy, so I’m more than glad we can return the favor! I had the absolute best time ever! Thank you so much! 💕
My cat is meowing back at Calcifer..... This is so wonderful seeing you both together in the video.
the duo i’ve been waiting for, i can’t believe this is real :”)
Awww us either honestly!!
Calcifer *screaming* for attention in the background 😂
I know 🤣🐱💕
Seeing the two of you together makes me so happy :)
I’m so glad!!! We feel the same! 🥹
"The summer they executed the Rosenbergs" I"ve always loved that line - thx
As soon as Emma read the Haunting of Hill House opening line, my body relaxed. I love that book. Carolyn, you must read it. And both of you must watch the 1963 adaptation.
Tell me you’re Canadian, without telling me you’re Canadian
Emma: I’ll buy you a double double
What about just ‘Why, eh?’
I ❤️ hearing you both read lines from classics! Super relaxed ☺️
The haunting of Hill House is really amazing! I watched the show twice and I’ve read the book. I’ll say I love the show and the book for different reasons.
I hear a lot of people say how scary the show is but really I saw it as tragic and I saw it as a drama. Because really the show talks about how trauma can affect your life and how a death in the family can affect all the rest of the family. And in itself it’s so amazing…the characters are amazing and the writing is amazing…Mike Flanagan understood the importance of dialogues and monologues, and he understood the subject of trauma and depression which made the show so great for me and so emotional…and it frustrates me because I hear people say this show is really scary and it makes it feel shallow when it’s actually really deep…I feel alone😂 also because I really didn’t find it scary 😂😂😂
Like…it’s so emotional and people don’t talk about it!😂😂😂
Crime and punishment is the only one I got 😆
I have already watched this video 3 times, I can tell it’s gonna be a comfort watch for years to come. You and Emma remind me so much of one of my best friends who lives in Norway/The Netherlands and I live in the states. We met online many many years ago & first met in person in Toronto just like you guys! I completely understand the feeling of almost feeling like the person is unreal but also having the most ethereal happiness. I hope your friendship continues to thrive for years on end as mine & my friends has 💕💕
Love the video! However the first line of Les Mis was not the actual first line. It was the first line of Part One Book Two Chapter One (1.2.1). The actual first line (not including the preface) is: “In 1815 Monsieur Charles-Francois-Bienvenu-Myriel was Bishop of Digne.”
the "another one" in the beginning reminded me of dj khaled and I don't know if that's why Emma laughed 😂 Loved this video Carolyn, hope you two had a fun time!!
I am profoundly enjoying myself watching you two together in person, hope it was an excellent visit 😊
Also I am feeling way more self-satisfied than I deserve to for knowing it was Candide.
me alone in my kitchen yelling 'ETHAN FROME! ITS ETHAN FROME!' 😭😭
Ugh I know 🙈🙈🙈
I've read Candide and Les Misérables in French. Interestingly I couldn't guess any of them although their fingerprint didn't get lost in translation.
I thought Candide in French relatively easy, except in a few parts, like the one with women and the monkeys, where the language was cryptic. Les Mis in French wasn't too bad, altho likely I missed out on some of the adjectival descripts, like when Jean had to climb over the wall with the girl on his back.
Always wants to read my favourite author in French - Balzac.
Loving this video, and love how you both had the chance to spend a week together in Toronto. Also I feel like I would be terrible at this!
So glad! We had such a wonderful week!
(This was way harder than I thought it would be 😂)
I love this. I have been waiting for more videos from your visit to Emma in Canada.
😄😄😄
The Haunting of Hill House's 5th episode is a masterpiece! I'd like to know what Emma will think of it.
Two of my favorites....thank you , both of you!!!
crying... i love you both most ardently
🥹🥰
Yeeeees ❤ I was waiting for the videos from the week you were together ❤
🥰🥰🥰
Emma’s Russian accent is on point
Carolyn reminds me so much of emmy rossum with her hair and big smile!
So many people tell me that! 😂😊 I take that as a huge compliment 🥰
It took me “part one chapter one” thing to realise it’s crime and punishment
Btw, there's a book coming out which is based on David Copperfield called Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver. Thought you might be interested :)
WHEN I TELL YOU i am literally reading the bell jar rn, like just started it yesterday. i love the first sentence, i’m so happy it featured in the video 🤭
this is so fun couldn't
stop smiling
So glad!!
It's the casually delivered Vronsky joke for me 🤣🐎
Awww! My goodness, y'all are so cute. The first sentence challenge is my favorite booktube thing and the trend has passed and people don't do it anymore but I'm so excited to watch this and see you guys do it!!!
📚💕
This was so heartwarming and funny to watch 😂🥹
I totally forgot that Emma have a cat, and I was wondering why there's a cat in my house. Then Emma said "miau" and i laugh so much ahaha 🤣
I JUST reread Slaughterhouse five! But didn't guess the line..what a shame
Yeah, I missed that one too. I had no idea how it began.
What an amazing idea!! 😍😍😍 I love seeing you together, lovely ladies!
And I can’t believe I read “Broken Wings” this week but didn’t guess the first lines! 😂😂
I have never heard of Ethan Frome but I absolutely loved this first line! It's probably going to be my next read (I'm brazilian and the portuguese editions I found are too expansive so I'm trying an English ebook, I hope it isn't too difficult for me since it's not my first language)
Between this video and the one on Emma's channel, The Haunting of Hill House is the only one that I got and I am SO PROUD of that one!! Haha
But seriously, you should give the show another chance Emma! It's a beeeeautiful analogy for mental health. Oh man. So good.
A ? lesser known favorite: "The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there." The Go-Between by L.P. Hartley
If you like Onegin the book, watch the opera! It is on another level of beauty!! I recommend the Met Opera production from 2017 directed by Deborah Warner. You can get a free trial of the Met On Demand service and watch it there, or find it online with a little digging (there are full versions of other productions on UA-cam). I didn't know anything about the plot before I watched it and the final scene absolutely destroyed me. Tchaikovsky's music is sublime.
Maybe I'll try Onegin. I don't read many contemporary books, but I did read 'My Brilliant Friend' cos the tv series is gorgeous. It's great fun seeing you two together in person. Great quiz idea. Will you be doing a 10 most awful reads? 😅 Saying this cos I'm thinking of poor better not say...
I guessed Crime and punishment immediately although I’ve only read it in Russian 💪🏻
I feel like you did really well considering there were quite some books you hadn't read! Plus situation of pressure, good on you!
Pleasee I was staring at the thumbnail for minutes when it hit me 😭😭💜
Great to finally see you two meet in person🥰🥰and i love these 'first line' videos sm.
When your two favorite people make a video together! It's perfection! 💖💖💖💖
David Copperfield is such an amazing book; I can't wait for you guys to read and review it for your book club! I'll be sure to tune in :)
Onegin- not sure which translation you read, but I by far prefect James Falen’s translation over Nabokov’s. Russian generally say he captured the soul of the book while keeping Pushkin’s meter and stanza structure. It’s sooo beautiful.
Fun collaboration, you two are the best
I love you both so so much and seeing you together brings me so much joy 🥰❤❤
🥰🥹💕
Carolyn's face in some of these! LOL!
😂
Great fun. Nice to see you started with the line by Kurt Vonnegut. I remember a few like "Call me Ismael", from Moby Dick and my favourite "It was the day my grandmother exploded" from the book The Crow Road by Iain Banks. I can highly recommend Crow Road, unlike Moby Dick. Looking forward to the return match.
Can't wait for part 2
I'm so proud of myself for getting "Crime and Punishment" and "The Haunting of Hill House"! Two of my favorites!
So girly girly. The one woman has a passing resemblance to Charlotte Gainsbourg. I will read the Pushkin. A fun watch.
Yess I'm early 💗 been waiting for this ✨
💕💕💕
this was hilarious! and also really fun to guess along!
As soon as Emma said Thunder Ten Trunkh I screamed Candide!
Teah, I got that one right away too, but I was hoping she'd read on to the 17 kicks to the rear end.
@@jamesduggan7200 yes lmao. It's actually great satire, don't know why they didn't like it.
@@klauslispector my guess is there was an association with school
Crazy to think it’s only a matter of time before they start a podcast together 😂
This was everything! The only one I knew was Lady Chatterlys Lover 🤣
This is so awesome 🤩 my two favorite book vloggers together!!
🥰🥰🥰
16:23 I love les Mis so much but when I was reading the Waterloo part...
I swear I intended to read all of it, but gave up have way through lol
I understand 😂
Yeah, Waterloo was tough, but not as bad as some of the later parts, like when he starts talking about this guy's father, and this one's uncle, and what medals they won etc etc.
One of my FAVORITE books is The Hunchback of Notra Dame.
Me silently crying cause you both didn't like the haunting of hill house show for different reasons.
I agree it was scary tho, but I was bawling my eyes out for most of the final episodes, so I guess the tears covered the scariness that was happening on screen
these are my favorite videos to watch, so entertaining 😭
Wow it's great to see you two together i've been looking forward for this video 💜 i only knew wuthering heights which us great because this challenge is so so hard in my opinion and i've read it in Arabic too so yeah 😂👍
emmas russian pronunciation is so good :0 did she study russian??
i like the opening line of crime and punishment so much.. i may be influenced by the fact that i read it in the hottest summer month while staying in saint petersburg on vacation and like. YEAH. i felt that.
walking the same streets as raskolnikov under the same summer heat . very immersive experience
evgeni onegin is so iconic i suspected the quote was from there despite the fact that i never heard it in english, only in russian in ninth grade lol. maybe i need to reread it to fully appreciate its beauty, bc ninth grade me hated it with passion (mainly bc one of the assignments was to learn by heart tatianas speech if you were a girl and evgenis speech if you were a boy and this way of assigning work pissed me off so bad)
What an awesome game!
Somehow I guessed Shirley Jackson too! And I've never read it either, how weird!
I guessed Wind in the Willow without reading too, but come on that was too funny not to get ha!
I hope Emma gets Heart of a Dog. Such a funky little novella!
Oh no, because something felt wrong about the Les Miserables first line....that isn't the first line *gasp* It's the first line of Book Two, not the first line. Maybe that is an abridged first line??
? not sure, but I seem to remember the story opens with the recently released convict, the miserable Jean Valjean, walking along the road, hungry, and in a hurry to reach Toulon? Or perhaps we meet the Bishop first? I suppose it works better meeting the Bishop first than it does giving the important details of his life in backstory. I'm not sure.
@@jamesduggan7200 Yeah we meet the BIshop first. The common giving-up criticism of Les Miserables is that it gives the entire first 50 pages to explaining a Bishop who is then out of the entire story by page 150. But I love every page of Victor Hugo
The Bishop is a miracle worker, a saint, and is therefore a driver of the story, if not the object itself, with his good work shaping lives 50 years later.
i was mistaken. i thought you were to try and guess a storyline of the novel YOU NEVER READ or supposedly .... n r by the first paragraph, cause the first paragraph of a good novel is always very telling
Tobogganing. . .the only one I actually got!
I'm so here for this
carolyn, the hill house show has absolutely nothing to do with the book so please do read it! shirley jackson is a gift.
Calcifer going nuts in the background 😂
Best crossover ever :) Btw, Carolyn actually pronounced 'Eugene' in a more correct way 😛
I haven't seen the Haunting TV show, but I hear it is not great. The Catherine Zeta Jones film is a POS that does not come close to the books and has bad special effects. The classic is the 1963 Robert Wise film (he directed the original West Side Story), which was one of the best and most terrifying films ever made. CLose to the book. No blood or gore. It bears repeated viewings. After the first time I saw it when I was 13, it took me a while to recover. Unforgettable and Julie Harris is an amazing actress.
Lovely video!I hope you gave as good as you got!😂✨
This is so exciting ahhh
😆
Just finished the haunting of hill house, so good! Please read it!
I just love this so much :’3
"There is something distinctive about the sight and sound of a human body falling from the rain forest canopy."
OMG THIS IS ICONIC
I surprisingly got a few
I got Candide and Bell Jar right away, but I was a little bit fooled with Crime and Punishment.
16:55 hilarious 😂😂
We have always lived in a Castle is so cool!
this brought me so much joy!!!!
I’m so glad 💕
such gorgeous gels
"we're finally together!"
me: i know what you are
still tryna figure it out
Reading the transcript is so funny.
Hello from British Columbia Canada
🇨🇦👋👍♥️🌲🌲🧘♀️🌲🌲🌈☂️🎩🐇💥🙂
Two wonderful women
The fast forword voice of Emma sounds like the voice of Calcifer.
That was fun !
Personally did not like SH5 but I encourage people to read it themselves to find out
I feel like if people were to do this with me, I'd be screwed as well 😂
woww have you ever read princess academy ^^ u remind me of miri !
