  • The very first of many collab videos with my dearest friend ‪@emmiereads‬
    :)
    Hi Friends!
After 3 wonderful years of friendship, Emma and I finally met each other in person! Last week was one of the most memorable times of my life, and I'm so grateful to have captured some of it for you to see!
In this video, Emma compiled a list of first lines and I had to guess which books they were from!
I went in feeling pretty confident and left feeling...well, you'll see!
...oh...and to make it more interesting we decided that the loser had to buy the winner a book, so you'll have to look out for Emma's video to see who is buying who a book!
I'd just like to thank you all for being so excited for us finally meeting each other! The fact that you care about our friendship means the world! (feeling so lucky to have such wonderful friends through this community...yourselves included)!
I hope you enjoy this video as much as we enjoyed filming it!
    Best wishes,
    Carolyn Marie :)

The haunting of Hill House is really amazing! I watched the show twice and I’ve read the book. I’ll say I love the show and the book for different reasons.
I hear a lot of people say how scary the show is but really I saw it as tragic and I saw it as a drama. Because really the show talks about how trauma can affect your life and how a death in the family can affect all the rest of the family. And in itself it’s so amazing…the characters are amazing and the writing is amazing…Mike Flanagan understood the importance of dialogues and monologues, and he understood the subject of trauma and depression which made the show so great for me and so emotional…and it frustrates me because I hear people say this show is really scary and it makes it feel shallow when it’s actually really deep…I feel alone😂 also because I really didn’t find it scary 😂😂😂
Like…it’s so emotional and people don’t talk about it!😂😂😂

Love the video! However the first line of Les Mis was not the actual first line. It was the first line of Part One Book Two Chapter One (1.2.1). The actual first line (not including the preface) is: “In 1815 Monsieur Charles-Francois-Bienvenu-Myriel was Bishop of Digne.”

    • @jamesduggan7200

I thought Candide in French relatively easy, except in a few parts, like the one with women and the monkeys, where the language was cryptic. Les Mis in French wasn't too bad, altho likely I missed out on some of the adjectival descripts, like when Jean had to climb over the wall with the girl on his back.

You can get a free trial of the Met On Demand service and watch it there, or find it online with a little digging (there are full versions of other productions on UA-cam). i like the opening line of crime and punishment so much.. i may be influenced by the fact that i read it in the hottest summer month while staying in saint petersburg on vacation and like. YEAH. i felt that.
walking the same streets as raskolnikov under the same summer heat . very immersive experience
evgeni onegin is so iconic i suspected the quote was from there despite the fact that i never heard it in english, only in russian in ninth grade lol. maybe i need to reread it to fully appreciate its beauty, bc ninth grade me hated it with passion (mainly bc one of the assignments was to learn by heart tatianas speech if you were a girl and evgenis speech if you were a boy and this way of assigning work pissed me off so bad)

? not sure, but I seem to remember the story opens with the recently released convict, the miserable Jean Valjean, walking along the road, hungry, and in a hurry to reach Toulon? Or perhaps we meet the Bishop first? I suppose it works better meeting the Bishop first than it does giving the important details of his life in backstory. I'm not sure.

    • @coopaloopmex
      @coopaloopmex 2 роки тому +1

@@jamesduggan7200 Yeah we meet the BIshop first. The common giving-up criticism of Les Miserables is that it gives the entire first 50 pages to explaining a Bishop who is then out of the entire story by page 150. But I love every page of Victor Hugo

I haven't seen the Haunting TV show, but I hear it is not great. The Catherine Zeta Jones film is a POS that does not come close to the books and has bad special effects. The classic is the 1963 Robert Wise film (he directed the original West Side Story), which was one of the best and most terrifying films ever made. CLose to the book. No blood or gore. It bears repeated viewings. After the first time I saw it when I was 13, it took me a while to recover. Unforgettable and Julie Harris is an amazing actress.
