  • In this video we are going to talk about making keys for padlocks (basically)
Always verify ownership and QUANTITY of padlocks before rekeying (which we did do prior to him coming back with the “not working” padlock) 😏
Most commonly we see people trying this with door locks

Copied 3 copies of a Toyota key. Guy comes back next morning & says 2 work but this one doesn't. Sir that's a key from ACE hardware. No you made this yesterday & I have a receipt. Sir my keys do not say ACE on them and wouldn't show wear in one day. Customer calls me a liar and says he won't be back and will UN-recommend me to his friends. Bye!

I have had people do this with repaired parts. When a new carburetor is installed that is nice clean black painted with shiny plated linkage and they carry in an unpainted carburetor with all of the plating gone from the linkage, loose and missing parts inside it's real annoying how stupid they think we are. Or maybe how much smarter they believe they are.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I did an opposite. A customer brought me a lock and I dumped the pins thinking he wanted a rekey. But he wanted the same key to work that lock. Since I made the mistake I told him to take another lock off his house and bring it to me and I'll rekey the first lock with no charge, but I did charge him making a first key to that. Good job Jason!

I've lived my life trying to help others. I am now 73 and all the progression of people I have given shelter, food, money and employment (at wages too high for their skills) are now long gone no "Good bye" "Thanks" "Adios" nothing. I am now in a situation where the only way I get help is to pay premium to craftsmen and actually that is better. I a lot poorer with work that is inferior all around my shop and property but now the clear light of day has shown through and I help no one unless I feel deeply they need it with no expectation of appreciation at all. People will poo on you for their continued passage costs in life to make their journey to wherever and leave you broke and sad no good byes or anything. Worthy people are worthy all the rest are scum. Don't let scum play you.

It's the same thing with the door closers, test the new ones you're selling to the customers for quality inspection on sight. If there are to be returns especially in a short amount of time, just verify by testing the tension/pressure with the arm attached and pushing it to the "opened" position then allow the reaction from the tension to respond bringing the arm back to the "closed" position.

Ya well I pumped gas as a kid and not all of us where that gullible. When a customer says fill it up then says "I said just a dollars worth" (it was a long time ago) the next response is to say back it up to the shop door and I will pump it back out or we can call the sheriff. They end up paying.

I hadn’t even thought of this as something that actually happens, but I can totally see now. I suppose in many ways, it is the same in any retail setting. At my store (I am a grocery store manager), we see folks all the time who claim to be double charged for items, and then try and come back in to get a refund on the thing they claim they were double charged for (when they bought two of the items). We do the same thing and check the cameras at the registers before issuing a refund.

When you said "padlock switchero" I thought someone left an open padlock hanging on a door and some nefarious character put his padlock on it. That was not uncommon 100+ years ago when padlocks were used to secure the front door of a business. Do the swap with the same brand and model of lock, then come back in the middle of the night, open the swapped lock, do the "shopping" and lock up with the original padlock. The store owner opens up the next morning and it could be days before he realizes things are missing.

On New Years Eve one year had a kid call. His key stopped working the ignition in his Nissan. Back in those days I carried pretty much every ignition and keying kit. Now we just do lost keys and lockouts. Had 18 calls today. Any way I look at it and it had bent wafers. I gave the kid a price for a new ignition keyed to his old key or just remove the ignition pull the bent wafers and reinstall it. New ignition was double the price. You know what he wanted. I also cut him a new key by code because the old key was bent. Just as I was done his father pulls up and said he didn't authorize the service so he wasn't going to pay me. lol I said fine and drove away with the keys.
I called the cops down the road for theft of service. Cops met me back at the car and basically told the father the kid told me to do the job and he was obligated to pay me. Father pays me all good. I also told them no warranty on yanking wafers before I did the work. If the lock does it again you will be paying me again since they didn't want a new ignition. This was a cheap way to get them going.
A couple days later they call and said the key doesn't work. I told them tough shit. No warranty. I got this call through a service and the service insisted I check it out or they were going to back charge me if the customer went somewhere else to fix it. I was pissed but I go to their house. They hand me a key that isn't the one I made. I said wheres the key I made? They go in the house and get it. Still works the door and starts the car. They weren't scamming, they had another Nissan and grabbed the wrong keys. The idiot father apologized to me about the other night and for how dumb they were.
One of my guys made smart key for a handicap Chrysler van the other day. Customer lost the keys. My employee did add a key instead of all keys lost. This was a $300 job. Guy calls back today and said he found his other key and wants to know if he can get a refund on the new key. lol Been doing this 40 years and that was the first time I heard that one. I've been doing this long enough that I have lost my filter. 95% of my customers a great but 5% are horrible. Sometimes I get greater pleasure leaving them stranded knowing there isn't anyone around that can do what we do. My employee handled this guy much kinder than I would have. He told him the remote was locked to his car and we couldn't do anything thing with it. I don't rely on repeat customers. Mine are one and done usually so I don't have to be nice to the bad ones and or scammers. I decline their work and we go to the next call.
