I was taught to do this to. Always wash the block really good before installing the moving parts. Let it dry for a few hours before installing the new parts
Great video! This video will never get old! I just tried to hone (Deglaze) my kool bore Briggs. I couldn’t find new chrome rings so crossing my fingers the old ones will still work. Really hope I didn’t screw it up.. Thanks for sharing!!
I am in the process of rebuilding the engine from my XUV 550 gator and wasn’t sure about the honing process but after watching and honing as per your video, I have total confidence that it will be perfect. The results appear to be the same as in your video. Thanks for your video and help from Newfoundland.
A very wise man taught me to keep an empty water bottle around the shop and fill it with 1/3 solvent 1/3 ATF. Makes for a great rust prevention system and honing oil.
Thanks my friend. An older video but well done. I was watching as i have a Honda that needs rings but now i know it is all aluminium. Bruce from Canada. I changed my channel name. Got rid of my last name.
I hone my blocs at the vertical and secure it down with a vinyl clamp. This way, you're able to squirt some lubricant while honing and the "up and down" motion is more precise than the "in and out" motion. Good upload. Thanks.
Hello, I have a 21 H.P. Briggs engine, single cyl. that smokes I see the spark plug has a ton of black goo on it so Im going to do a ring job, should I just get the stock replacement rings or would you go with the oversized ones for doing this job?.. Thanks for the help! B.
Have you done a video about setting the ring gaps? I enjoy watching your videos im looking to rebuilding my 15hp ohv engine. Im guessing the rings are bad cause as i mow n make a rurn it smokes bad but when it sits it smokes lil bit
Yes! ua-cam.com/video/4IOYxsFS8yw/v-deo.html That is usually the problem, but also note, on OHV motors, they are bad about blowing head gaskets between the cylinder and valve chamber. So if its excessive / constant smoke then thats probably it, if its the smoke at start and when you throttle up then its probably rings. Thanks for Watching!
@@fnaguitarplayer9 thanks. I did tear most of it apart. Got the head off. Cylinder looks fine no major scratch marks can see the hone marks slightly. I may just tear it all way down n put new rings on n hone cylinder
I have rings that are far out of spec on a beautiful cylinder that's waiting to get honed. I wish I'd seen your video beforehand as I bought the original rings. Think it'll be in spec with the new rings?
The rings I replaced had a .090" gap. It turns out these new stock size rings will get me the clearance you mentioned for a new ring install. How did the original ring gap get that big without the cylinder diameter not being large enough to require new rings?
the hoan marks provide mini oil gallery's to retain the oil just like the surface of finely machined steel under and electron microscope has peaks and troffs...
the crosshatch pattern should be around 45 degrees both ways and turning the hone fairly slow will get you where you need to be, your pattern looks good that engine should break on quick good video thanx
Great video. Do these lawn mower engines develope a ridge at the top of the cylinder like a car does? We used a ridge reamer to get the ridge off the top of cylinders on cars back in the '70s. Also, how much over size rings do you put in your small engines? One thousands or two thousands etc. I gave a friend a 18.5hp briggs for swapping motors on my rider. It had no compression. He said he was going to put rings in it. What else do you recommend he does so it will turn out good? Thanks in advance.
Thanks! Yes they do, the aluminum bore cylinders are worse (and they don't need honed when rebuilding) but the cast iron bore engines will get a ridge as well but most of the time they are not bad, usually i'll dress it up with sand paper to smooth it out before removing piston. For most engines rings are available in standard, .010", .020" and .030", 90% of time a standard set will do, sometimes i'll use .010" and file them till the ring gap is to spec, but its not a preferred method. If there is no compression at all its probably valve related, either a stuck valve, out of adjustment or needs reseated. If its a cast iron bore, hone it, get new set of rings, do a valve job and tune up (possible carb clean, new spark plug etc) then put good oil in it and drain it after a few hours of use and put a good oil in it and it will hold up for a while. now of course if you tear it down and its got a scored cylinder then its going to take more work/money to fix. Hope this helps, and I also have complete rebuilding videos as well. Thanks for Watching!!!
I have a 1940s german engine and no hone can even scratch the cylinder, even with a file or sandpaper.. Its not coated but for some reason its like diamond. The other one on the bike was fine but less shiney.
What about that Nichol that they put on them aluminum engines you can't hold them or bore them unless you send it off to have it re nicholshield or hardened
Good video,,,,,A question,,,,I got a 12.5 briggs,,,,The cylinder looks good. Is a cast iron sleeve. When i put the old rings in the cylinder the ring gap is 18,,,,,,But when i slip the oil ring in the cylinder the gap is 44.,,,Could i reuse the old rings???,,,Thanks
Thanks! I wouldn't recommend using those rings, on a fresh rebuild i try to keep the ring gap around .003 to .010" for all 3 rings, when i put this motor back together (next video) I got all 3 rings at .003", i ordered .010" oversized rings and filed them to specs. It will run with them, but it will have slightly lower compression and you may see a puff of smoke or it will use some oil. Thanks for Watching!!!
The one I got came from sears (craftsman). The one harbor freight sells is just as good, you can get them at auto parts stores, harbor freight or off of ebay/amazon. Thanks for Watching!!!
I have a video that talks about ring specs, usually on most small engines it should be between .003" and .010" but there are different specs. Thanks for Watching!!!
For me, anyway, if you are doing a wheel cylinder, you don’t need the cross hatch pattern and a glossier finish is preferred- since you are trying to seal a rubber cup instead of piston rings. Finish with the pressure dialed back, thicker oil.
I would hit it lightly again with oil just to smooth out and rough spots, it makes it cut smoother with oil and extends the life the of stones, it can cause scratches without oil. Thanks for Watching!!!
You will need the oversize piston first and have a machine shop do it, don't try to use a hone, it won't turn out even enough. then just put it together as normal, getting a ring gap of around .003". Thanks for Watching!!!
I think it would be possible, you would have to make a water jacket around all the cooling fins or have a aluminum tubing coiled through them, or something like that, I've never heard of anyone doing it but i'm sure its possible, and would probably help extend the life of the engine since it could run cooler. Interesting idea! Thanks for Watching!!!
As far as I know none of the ebay sellers given any numbers regarding cylinder condition. Words like good and serviceable are subjective. Never got up enough nerve to give em a try.
Your right, they don't say much. I judged this by overall condition and in the pics the cylinder looked good for what i could see. But you never know what your getting, i took a chance, and it only cost me 35 bucks (and free shipping too) and it turned out great, it still had some factory hone marks left in it, so i could tell it was lower hours. But yeah its hit or miss, you never know what your getting. Thanks for Watching!!!
if you ever do decide to " "give em a try" look for 99. + percent customer approval rating, seller accepts returns and 4- 5 stars. Never had a problem when others have shopped there in numbers and they all (most) say they are happy. Ebay, I cant log on to my own account, so I use Amazon.
A light honing won't take too much material off so the same size rings will be OK, however if the bore is oval or stepped then it needs machining to oversize and a suitable new piston and rings.
You're the first person I've seen on UA-cam to recommend cleaning with warm soap and water. That's the way I was taught.
Andy Milanak really! It's the best way to clean them after honing. Thanks for watchibg!!!

I feel that is the best way to do it to, you wouldn't have as much control over it going in and out. Thanks man, and Thanks for Watching!!!
I do understand that, for video purpose, we can see better at this angle. Good video. Thank you.
Thanks for the video I learned how to use my cylinder hone thanks
Your welcome, glad to help out! Thanks for Watching!!!
Thanks for honing in on such a boring subject! :)

For honing fluid, I have used cheap ATF.
I didn't know about the speed of the hone good video
Yeah its really critical, takes some practice. Thanks for Watching!!!
the hoan marks provide mini oil gallery's to retain the oil just like the surface of finely machined steel under and electron microscope has peaks and troffs...
I run my hone in a bucket with hot soapy water while I'm honing the cylinder in the bucket of hot soapy water...👍
That’s the correct way
the crosshatch pattern should be around 45 degrees both ways and turning the hone fairly slow will get you where you need to be, your pattern looks good that engine should break on quick good video thanx
Yeah, its easy to get it wrong. It did run great, didn't smoke much while breaking in. your welcome, Thanks for Watching!

Kerosene or mineral spirits works quite well to wash it out too.

which grit stones are you using ?

What sort of a honing wheel would I want on a little Flathead 3 horse. Model is 80202.

A fresh rebuilt requires new rings. Compare your situation to new shoes with old laces. How long will you be able to run before something fails ?

Is there a difference in a break hone vs cylinder hone?
Mainly just size, the brake hones are smaller and can be used on a real small engine. Thanks for Watching!!!
For me, anyway, if you are doing a wheel cylinder, you don’t need the cross hatch pattern and a glossier finish is preferred- since you are trying to seal a rubber cup instead of piston rings. Finish with the pressure dialed back, thicker oil.

i see hot spots in cylinder also
Example of wrong honing. Please hold the drill centered and don''t move it from side to side

Too*
This didn't affect the piston size right? I mean you didn't need a bigger one? Just rings?
A light honing won't take too much material off so the same size rings will be OK, however if the bore is oval or stepped then it needs machining to oversize and a suitable new piston and rings.
burrrrrrrp....scuse me :s
