No way, not offended at all Brother Bro. Thank you for talking about something people rarely do because they feel guilty feeling bad for animals when so many humans have it so shitty. You were spot on.
Absolutely loved Brother Bro's analysis of The Zone of Interest and agree with everything you guys said. This is not my favorite movie of the year just because of an entertainment factor, but it's definitely the one that's saying the most and it would be a worthy best picture winner in my opinion
I saw it multiple times on 70MM IMAX and every time we get to that final scene, and I see Einstein in color, I am STUNNED that three hours have passed. It’s crazy to me that a movie that long can feel like it goes so quickly.
Re: The Zone of Interest discussion. It was bold of you to say it, but yes, very much agree, especially regarding the pet comment. To be ok with eating meat requires one to have a very particular set of morals to differentiate between human life and animal life (which, for some, can be on a specturm when considering animals with more complex brains: monkeys, dolphins etc.) To own a pet and be disgusted at the thought of anything happening to said pet (meanwhile also being a meat eater and turning a blind eye to the meat industry) is problematic to say the least - certainly, it is not a morally or intellectually consistent stance to take.
The last part of your comment is wildly unrealistic. Thats like saying caring for your own baby but not actively helping all the countries in a world where children die of hunger every hour is problematic. It is sad for sure but villianizing people for it is strange.
@@samnovak3024 No, your analogy doesnt work. By eating meat, you are actively contributing to animal's being killed and mistreated. By caring for your own baby, you are not actively participating in the murder of other children! Like I said, if one is ok with the murder of animals, that is a legitimate stance to take (and I referenced a spectrum in my comment because to many, killing an ant is very different to killing a pig, and killing a pig is very different to killing a monkey). Owning a pet, in virtually every case, shows one cares about the treatment of animals. Therefore, pointing out the hypocrisy between caring for the life of a dog, meanwhile being ok with the torture and slaughter of a cow, for example, is a legitimate argument to make.

I agree with most of your choices, but the movie that still lingers in my mind from 2023 is the Irish film, “An Cailín Ciúin”-“The Quiet Girl”-which I first saw a year ago, and then went to see three more times at local cinemas because of the powerful emotional effect it had upon me. I retired a few years ago after spending forty years working with troubled children and their families, so this deceptively simple story of a nine-year-old girl from a poor and neglectful home being sent off to spend the summer with her mother’s cousin, a childless, middle-aged woman and her husband who run a dairy farm in the Irish countryside, really hit close to home with me, bringing back many bittersweet memories of the children and parents I used to work with, among them a pair of foster parents who operated a dairy farm, just like the Kinsellas do in the movie. The film was directed by Colm Bairéad, who also wrote the screenplay adapted from the short story, “Foster”, by Claire Keegan, who also wrote, “Small Things Like These”, upon which Cillian Murphy’s new film is based. For some reason, “The Quiet Girl” continues to affect me in a way that no film has in a long, long time.
Wow thanks for bringing this film to my attention with this beautiful review. I’ve worked with many children of trauma so will definitely check this film out.

My take on Best Picture nominees: I rated Anatomy of a Fall and Flower Moon a bit higher and Maestro lower than the rest but generally thought they were good, but didn’t strongly care about any of them, and The Zone of Interest landed with me in the middle of the middle. Brother Bro’s two points about the movie remind me of a couple of prominent contemporary thinkers: on the animal welfare, holocaust analogy-“if the Jews were slaughtered like cattle, does it follow that cattle are slaughtered like the Jews?”-it’s J.M. Coetzee, who deals with it in a story called the poets and the animals. (A second story is called the philosophers and the animals, and these stories are collected both in the book The Lives of Animals and the book Elizabeth Costello.) The other point-“if you think you wouldn’t have been a guard in Auschwitz, then think again, bucko!”-of course now seems to belong to Jordan Peterson. It’s strange, because nothing could be more relevant today than a piece of art that informs your perspective about how to think about and what to do about the fact of ongoing tribal hatred and genocide, but I didn’t get anything like that from The Zone of Interest.

This is the problem with these top 10 lists. So subjective. Other than Anatomy of a fall and the holdovers I either did not like or did not see every movie on their list. I would have included poor things as well as other movies sometimes with not great reviews in my top 10.
@@TomBrzezicki I had no expectations for it besides seeing some good reviews. I got totally wrapped up in it, took me by surprise. I had never seen Emma Mackey before. And loved it's almost ominous tone. Like a darker Pride and Prejudice.
An additional film from 2023 that you should really watch and review if you haven't seen it already is Saltburn. It's not only WILD, it's actually a gorgeous, really interesting, and great film.
Seeing Poor Things in both honorable mentions but not Oppenheimer meant either a) Oppenheimer was not going to be on either list, which would be awesome, or b) one or both of the lads was going to say a mid-quality pretentious bio-pic with a child's view of history was somehow much better than Poor Things which would make it hard for me to maintain my affection or respect for them. So I bailed on the video, suspecting the worst. I really like these guys and I just don't want to know.
My list of overrated movies from 2023: Poor Things, The Zone of Interest, May December, All of Us Strangers and Saltburn. My top 10 which actually is top 5 (movies you should watch) is: 1) Oppenheimer, 2) The Holdovers, 3) Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, 4) John Wick: Chapter Four, 5) Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie, 6) The Promised Land, 7) Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, 8) Killers of the Flower Moon, 9) Anatomy of a Fall, 10) 20 Days in Mariupol. And I think the documentaries are, the majority of them, very important lessons of history! Special mentions: JFK: What the Doctors Saw, The Society of Snow, Io Capitano, Barbie, The Iron Claw, Past Lives and To End All War: Oppenheimer & the Atomic Bomb. I still didn't watch Godzilla Minus One and The Boy and the Heron!
10 The Boy and The Heron 9 Spider man : across the spider verse 8 May December 7 Past Lives 6 Fallen Leaves 5 Killers Of The Flower Moon 4 The Holdovers 3 The Zone of Interest 2 Oppenheimer 1 Anatomy Of a Fall
Thanks for your support of animal rights, really well put. I think a lot of the times people are kinda shy talking about this subject as directly as you did, so to me that was very powerful. I agree that animals are just like us and our denial is insanely ugly. Hope the attitudes will change
Anatomy of a Fall, she is clearly and deliberately shown to be not guilty from the outset. There is a (very) wide shot of when the boy and the dog discover the body, in that shot she is shown to be genuinely alarmed. She is on her own, with no audience, she is not pretending for anyone. This seems like a very deliberate choice on the part of the director, there is no need at all to include this shot, she could just as easily appear at the scene of the death, then throughout the rest of the film her behaviour and attitudes would be very ambiguous. For me the only reason for this shot is to demonstrate her innocence.
Brother Bro! LOVED your thoughts on The Zone of Interest, animal cruelty, and speciesism. As an animal lover, current pescetarian and future vegan, I really appreciated your stance.
Thank you for Anatomy of a fall review, Sandra Huller gave Hands down the Performance of the Year (male or female) and she was robbed at The Oscars. also there were many best Supporting Snubbs : Milo Machado-Graner or Swann Arlaud could easily replace Ryan Gosling and Mark Ruffalo for me
Great picks as always. Really looking forward to rewatching About Dry Grasses when it’s available VOD. I don’t disagree at all with your vegan/animal assessment - it’s essentially a form of torture and mass killing we’ve chosen to ignore for the sake of a corrupt food pyramid. I still eat meat sometimes but that just exemplifies my complicity.
My PERSONAL top 10: 10. The Zone of Interest (super important i will literally never return to it but i also can't find any flaws) 9. A Thousand and One 8. Beau is Afraid 7. The Holdovers 6. May December 5. The Iron Claw 4. The Killer 3. How To Blow Up A Pipeline 2. Oppenheimer 1. Killers of the Flower Moon Poor Things and Past Lives just didn't hit me like that. I respect them as movies and like them a lot but I wasn't head over heels for either of them. Spider-Man as well. I liked it a lot but it just didn't hit like the first one. John Wick was super good but I think I just have sequel fatique. Shoutout to Infinity Pool as well, just some sicko shit but I like Possessor more. Maestro was fun and I liked it but it just completely pales in comparison to something like Tar. And I didn't get a chancd to see a couple of other movies that I think might've made my list like Perfect Days, Godzilla Minus One, and a couple others.
I've been waiting for your top ten video! I don't think of you guys as "film critics", per se, but I think you both give really thoughtful and astute analyses of movies and I always love hearing your take. Bafflingly stupid that anyone would take issue with comparing The Zone of Interest to how we treat animals, let alone comparing animals to people.
I, a 90% plant-based eater, wasn't expecting the carnivore talk. I never knew I needed that comparison with another controversial film!

Haha, as a vegan I was NOT offended. I hope others took a message about the quiet evils of consumerism.
Thanks for the great recommendations. What most jumped out at me were Rye Lane, Perfect Days and About Dry Grasses.
I was happy to see some May December love in here. That’s one of the biggest snubs at the Oscars this year. Granted it got screenplay, I think supporting actor and picture were shoe-ins.
1. Spiderverse
2. Oppie
3. Guardians 3
4. John Wick 4
5. Afire
6. Rye Lane
7. Fallen Leaves

1. Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse
2. Poor Things and Oppenheimer
3. Society of the Snow
4. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3
5. Killers of the Flower Moon
Don’t feel bad about the Color Purple because I saw it in the theatre and it is an awful remake. Couple good performances but that’s it.
Not having Poor Things in your top 10 is crazy to me
It’s a bit style over substance
not interested in watching. its a bit too out there for me
These other responses are disheartening. You’re right and you should say it! My fav of 2023!!!
It's good but not that good, come on now haha
It's not even in my top 20. 🤣🤷🏻♂️
10. Poor Things
9. The Boy and the Heron
8. John Wick: Chapter 4
7. Maestro
6. American Fiction
5. May December
4. Air
3. The Holdovers
2. Oppenheimer
1. Anatomy of a Fall
Poor things in honorable mentions? Why? It was better than Oppenheimer.
It’s a bit style over substance.
Those two were my top two from the Best Picture lineup
The world doesn't revolve around you Jeremy
Well...
Amazing video guys
Poor things being a honorable mention is definitely a choice.
Personally i don't get the past lives love, I didnt buy into the childhood relationship and then reunion, i dont know why
Violin and Piano emit different frequencies of sounds which gives us different effects.
For actors and actresses they also have a different power to deliver a dialogue.

This is the problem with these top 10 lists. So subjective. Other than Anatomy of a fall and the holdovers I either did not like or did not see every movie on their list. I would have included poor things as well as other movies sometimes with not great reviews in my top 10.

FINALLYYYYYYYYY🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
No one watched my favorite movie I saw in 2023.
Emily directed by Frances O'connor
Although it wasn't my favourite film from 2023, I enjoyed seeing "Emily" at my local independent cinema last year.
@@TomBrzezicki I had no expectations for it besides seeing some good reviews.
I got totally wrapped up in it, took me by surprise. I had never seen Emma Mackey before. And loved it's almost ominous tone.
Like a darker Pride and Prejudice.
May december was the worst movie i hqve ever seen
An additional film from 2023 that you should really watch and review if you haven't seen it already is Saltburn. It's not only WILD, it's actually a gorgeous, really interesting, and great film.
Scrolled to see if zone was #1 and it was. And I went about my day love y’all 😂
Barbie makes #3 and Poor Things makes a runner up. ::waves goodbye to credibility::
Oppenheimer is so easily first. Then I’ve got American Fiction and Saltburn.
your analysis is subjective and full of critic jargon and stating the obvious
Seeing Poor Things in both honorable mentions but not Oppenheimer meant either a) Oppenheimer was not going to be on either list, which would be awesome, or b) one or both of the lads was going to say a mid-quality pretentious bio-pic with a child's view of history was somehow much better than Poor Things which would make it hard for me to maintain my affection or respect for them. So I bailed on the video, suspecting the worst. I really like these guys and I just don't want to know.
Oppenheimer is indeed a masterpiece.
Nah its not
Bros, just stop to put the same #1's and #2's...
Saltburn is better than most of the pretentious movies people say
🤭
Get yo arse back to tumblr
My list of overrated movies from 2023: Poor Things, The Zone of Interest, May December, All of Us Strangers and Saltburn.
My top 10 which actually is top 5 (movies you should watch) is:
1) Oppenheimer,
2) The Holdovers,
3) Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,
4) John Wick: Chapter Four,
5) Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie,
6) The Promised Land,
7) Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour,
8) Killers of the Flower Moon,
9) Anatomy of a Fall,
10) 20 Days in Mariupol.
About Dry Grasses is literally an underrated masterpiece. as a turkish, I'm so glad you guys like this movie so much.
10 The Boy and The Heron
9 Spider man : across the spider verse
8 May December
7 Past Lives
6 Fallen Leaves
5 Killers Of The Flower Moon
4 The Holdovers
3 The Zone of Interest
2 Oppenheimer
1 Anatomy Of a Fall
Totally agree with your thoughts on The Zone of Interest, so thanks for amplifying that message. Another great video, fellas!
5) About dry grasses
4) The boy and the heron
3) All of us strangers
2) Poor things
1) The zone of interest
Thank you for Anatomy of a fall review, Sandra Huller gave Hands down the Performance of the Year (male or female) and she was robbed at The Oscars. also there were many best Supporting Snubbs : Milo Machado-Graner or Swann Arlaud could easily replace Ryan Gosling and Mark Ruffalo for me
22:27 Correction: The atomic bomb was used TWICE, not once!
thank you.....August 6 and three days later, August 9.
Maestro is a bad film
No, bad written yes, bad directed, acted and shot? Absolutely no, not a perfect film but far from being bad.
It’s really not, go watch more movies
The point about animal industry in the zone of interest is exactly what I told my friend about this movie when it came out
Brother bro looks like Carmen from the bear
Cat!
😺
Great picks as always. Really looking forward to rewatching About Dry Grasses when it’s available VOD. I don’t disagree at all with your vegan/animal assessment - it’s essentially a form of torture and mass killing we’ve chosen to ignore for the sake of a corrupt food pyramid. I still eat meat sometimes but that just exemplifies my complicity.
My PERSONAL top 10:
10. The Zone of Interest (super important i will literally never return to it but i also can't find any flaws)
9. A Thousand and One
8. Beau is Afraid
7. The Holdovers
6. May December
5. The Iron Claw
4. The Killer
3. How To Blow Up A Pipeline
2. Oppenheimer
1. Killers of the Flower Moon
Poor Things and Past Lives just didn't hit me like that.
I liked Infinity Pool and Possessor. And completely agree about Maestro - as soon as it finished, my main thought was how good was Tar.
I've been waiting for your top ten video! I don't think of you guys as "film critics", per se, but I think you both give really thoughtful and astute analyses of movies and I always love hearing your take. I also really appreciate your thoughts on Zone of Interest, too. Only a lazy interpretation would say you're comparing animals to people. Zone of Interest, like the best of movies, makes us reflect on our own lives and behaviors in valuable ways.

5) Barbie
4) Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3

5. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

Films i haven't seen that could make it in this 10: Killers of the Flower Moon, The Zone of Interest, The Iron Claw, The Boy and the Heron, Godzilla Minus One, Blackberry, Society of the Snow
you're totally right about the animal welfare discussion, i felt very seen with the chicken nuggets example (ouchie)
What is the cat's favorite?
It's interesting how the colour purple and American Fiction does not make sense being in your top ten. Hmmm....
Here are the 10 movies I’ve watched (still need to watch some):
1.Oppenheimer
2.Society of the Snow
3.Poor things
4.Teachers lounge
5.Maestro

Never thought I’d hear a passionate discussion about animal rights here. I’m vegetarian, would like to potentially go vegan but it’s hard
