Toni Collette’s “Hereditary” is THE PERFORMANCE OF THE DECADE! She was phenomenal! This is the “Sophie’s Choice” performance of this generation. She should’ve being nominated and won. It’s ridiculous!
Gyllenhaal was better than everyone else nominated that year in the Best Actor category. He should have WON and he didn't even get nominated. Truly infuriating.
Absolutely not. That year was strong. I loved each and every performance starting from Eddie as Hawking, Keaton’s Birdman to Steve Carrell’s terrific take on the psychotic coach, Bradley’s Sniper and ofc the flawless Cumberbatch…. If Jake does this 1 year later he easily should have won either.
Toni Collette for Hereditary should be the biggest Oscar snub of all time IMO, it was criminal how she wasn’t even acknowledged! I’d also add Tilda Swinton for We Need to Talk about Kevin, Jennifer Lopez for Hustlers, Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattison for The Lighthouse, Adam Sandler for Uncut Gems, and Awkwafina for the Farewell.
Toni Collette missing a Best Actress nomination for her spectacular job in Hereditary has got to be the most frustrating, sad, and unbelievable thing to happen at the Oscars in recent years. It's even worse than Denis Villeneuve missing his nomination for Dune. As with every snub it's always important to think about it in context. In other words, if you put someone in you have to take someone out of the eventual nominees list. I'm happy to see you talked about who should've been replaced in many of your choices. Another great video!!
It’s not really unbelievable. The academy is always biased against horror films. “Get out” I think is the only recent horror film that was able to overcome that.
Right?! There was most definitely a huge vocal crowd that was upset over her not getting recognized. I feel like her performance and that movie kind of reinvigorated the conversation about horror movies never being recognized by the academy.
Completely agree. Toni Collete in Hereditary will go down as the biggest snub in history. She is astounding in that movie. Just minutes of her grief performance alone when she’s sobbing. I was floored. The genre bias really is egregious b/c Lupita in Us was also an incredible performance
The fact that Collette and Gyllenhall only have one academy award nomination each really is shocking to me they're two of my favorites, and the fact that Amy Adams hasn't won yet really gets to me. The movie you mentioned for each of their snubs are movies I'm a huge fan of. One performance that is incredibly underrated and is absolutely worth a nomination is Leo DiCaprio in Shutter Island. The movie itself was pushed back from a fall to a February release date and it was overshadowed by Inception, being another psychological Leo starring movie of 2010, but his performance in it is literally perfect. The dream sequences and the scene towards the end at the lake are haunting mainly because he sells it so well. Another one for best actor that I remember being upset about was JGL in 50/50. It's funny because that movie is rather personal to me in that I had a close family member get diagnosed less than two months after it was released but he sells the despair and hopelessness a cancer diagnosis so well.
From the outside you can say how someone Adams hasn't won yet. But then you see who won each year and it's comprenhensible. And that happens very often. Last year was shameful though.
In my Oscars snubs Danielle Deadwyler for Till is one I still haven't figured out and another one is Emma Thompson for Saving Mr. Banks , her performance in that film is brilliant and heartbreaking at the same time. She was getting nominated for almost everything that year. I wish that the Oscar 5 for best actress for this year could had the Sag 5. I love The Danish girl and Alicia Vikander is great in it and if she could had been nominated for best actress for both Ex Machina and The Danish Girl in the same year like they used to do back in the early days of the Oscars
Mine is definitely Toni Collette for Hereditary, such an amazing performance, The Academy should really start considering horror on The same level as other genres, same thing happened with Mia Goth for Pearl, which was very much deserving as well, Its kinda crazy to think that The last real best actress winner for a horror movie was Jodie Foster in The 90’s
Toni Collette is for me the number 1 Snub in recent years (Hereditary). Amy Adams is a strong second, because she didn’t have only one but TWO great performances in Arrival AND Nocturnal Animals. 3rd is Tilda Swinton for We need to talk about Kevin. This year, definitely Danielle Deadwyler !
I’m so glad that you used my suggestion!!! My Original list: My list 1: Amy Adam’s (Arrival) 2: Mila Kunis (Black Swan) 3: Andrew Garfield (The Social Network) 4: Miles Teller (Whiplash) 5: Toni Collete (Hereditary) 6: Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street/Babylon) 7: Taraji P Henson (Hidden Figures) 8: Lupita N’yongo (Us) 9: Diego Calva (Babylon) 10: Jake gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler)
Essie Davis for the Babadook! She was incredible and received a handful of critics and festival noms for her performance. But the film never gained awards traction since it was horror :/
Great list!!! I wanna add: Emily Blunt - A Quiet Place and Mary Poppins Tilda Swinton - We Need To Talk About Kevin Jacob Tremblay - Room Jennifer Lopez - Hustlers Anyone from Parasite, esp Song Kang Ho (Dad) and Park So Dam (daughter)
happy to see Song Kang Ho make it in, Parasite is still probably my favorite Oscar winner in recent memory!! i wonder if he could've taken on Brad Pitt in supporting that year because there was so much love for Pitt and i think this was OUATIH's only win that night, but if 2023 proved anything its that the academy doesn't care about consolation prizes so a Song Kang Ho win could have been totally possible imo if the campaign and the nom were there
Love this new series and those are some great picks. Other personal snubs I'd include are: Delroy Lindo for Da 5 Bloods David Oyelowo for Selma Jessica Chastain for Molly's Game Shailene Woodley for The Descendants Nicolas Cage for Pig Mia Goth for Pearl Adam Sandler for Uncut Gems Jennifer Lopez for Hustlers Tom Hanks for Captain Phillips Margot Robbie for Wolf of Wall Street
My number one is Adam Sandler for Uncut Gems. I can’t believe he was overlooked. I know that movie was either loved or hated, very divisive, but he was phenomenal!
That year it was stacked. Have you seen the nominees? Phoenix for Joker, Banderas for Pain and Glory, Driver for Marriage Story, DiCaprio fro OUATIH and Steven Price for The Two Popes. And the ones that got left out as well? Kang-ho for Parasites, Bale for FvF, Eagerton in Rocketman, Dafoe and Pattinson in The Lighthouse, DeNiro for The Irishman, Mackay for 1917, Pitt for Ad Astra. And then two "supporting" performances that could well have been leading and be nominated, Pitt for OUATIH and Pacino for The Irishman.
You almost got me there! I really thought for a second that you'd forgot to include Toni Collete's performance in Hereditary. I absolutely agree in all levels that she should've been nominated for this role. She's magnificent
Not including the ones on this list (Because YES!) here are some other ones I’ll throw out: • Nicholas Cage - Pig • Entire Cast - Straight Outta Compton • Anne Dorval - Mommy • Ryan Gosling - Blade Runner 2049 • Aubrey Plaza - Black Bear • Willem Dafoe - The Lighthouse • Florence Pugh - Lady Macbeth • Simon Rex - Red Rocket • Dev Patel - Green Knight • Olivia Colman - Tyrannosaur • Aisling Franciosi, Sam Claflin, and Baykali Ganambarr - The Nightingale • Mads Mikkelson - The Hunt • Adam Sandler - Uncut Gems • Ruth Negga - Passing • Lubna Azabal - Incendies Edit: Forgot Logan Marshall Green - Upgrade
I'm glad you mentioned Ex-Machina because I still think Oscar Isaac deserved a Best Supporting Actor nomination. He was incredible in that movie with a very dynamic performance.
Great list! I would also add Kirsten Dunst in Melancholia, Kate Winslet in Ammonite, Jennifer Aniston in Cake and Emily Blunt in Sicario or A Quiet Place.
So many great choices! Those Toni Colette, Lupita Nyongo, Danielle Deadwyler, and Amy Adams snubs still hurt! Especially since Amy got snubbed for her best performance! Agreed with Parasite for Song Kang Ho too. I would also add Ethan Hawke for First Reformed & Jennifer Lopez for Hustlers (her best performance since Selena & Out Of Sight, though I always knew the BAFTA snub, her tabloid persona, and mixed filmography would have set her back). Great top 10 list & a very creative presentation too!
My Biggest Snubs: Taron Egerton - Rocketman 2019 Alan Rickman - Deathly Hallows Part 2 2011 Robert Pattinson - Good Time 2017 Johnny Depp - Black Mass 2013 Ralph Fiennes - Grand Budapest Hotel 2014 Emma Thompson - Saving Mr Banks 2013 Amy Adams - Arrival 2016 Carey Mulligan - She Said 2022 Timothy Spall - Mr Turner 2014 Jason Isaacs & Ann Dowd - Mass 2021 Mads Mikkelsen - Another Round Viola Davis - Woman King Andrew Garfield - Social Network Timothee Chalamet - Beautiful Boy Eddie Redmayne - Good Nurse All 3 Leads - Perks of Being a Wallflower
10. Andrew Garfield, The Social Network 9. Albert Brooks, Drive 8. Margot Robbie, Babylon 7. Toni Collette, Hereditary 6. Rosamund Pike, I care a lot 5. Colin Farrell, In Bruges 4. Jason Isaacs, Mass 3. Amy Adams, Arrival 2. Hugh Jackman, Prisoners 1. Jake Gyllenhaal, Nightcrawler
Shame is one of my all time favorite movies, and I often feel like I'm the only one who's seen it. It's so powerful and hauntingly beautiful but also tragic and Michael Fassbender gives the performance of a lifetime. He's one of my top favorite actors, so thank you for mentioning him 💜
Great list. The only one I would have mentioned was Kirsten Dunst in Melancholia however we all know she didn't get a nomination because of that train wreck of a press converse lmao. If your doing a 00s list for the snubbed acting categories I would suggest Naomi Watts (Mulholland drive) and Bjork (dance in the dark)
Thank you for naming Julie Delpy. She was near perfection on Midnight. One I think who deserved an Oscar nom is Ralph Fiennes at The Grand Budapest Hotel. Toni Collette was absolutely robbed.
I 100% agree with you about Albert Brooks. I always thought of him as a comedic actor and for him to play the villain so well in Drive, it really blew me away.
Thank you for another great video! I’m surprised you didn’t mention Hong Chau for “Downsizing,” despite being nominated for a ton of precursors that year. But perhaps it’s because “Downsizing” was not a well received film in general. Perhaps one day you can create a video how the academy tends to snub AAPI performances in general? You mentioned Song Kang-Ho, and it’s nice seeing Youn Yuh-Jung, Steven Yeun, and of course Ke Huy Quan and Michelle Yeoh as of late, but some names that come to my mind that had buzz were Tsai Chin (Joy Luck Club), Awkwafina (The Farewell), Zhao Suh-Zhen (The Farewell), and THE ABSOLUTE WORST Zhang Ziyi for “Memoirs of Geisha,” who was nominated for every precursor and was so blatantly snubbed by the Academy!
Hong Chau is a goddess! She ate in The Menu too. Dolly De Leon (TOS), Gong Li (Memoirs), Michelle Yeoh (CTHD) and Maggie Cheung (Hero), Kim Hye-ja (Mother) snubs reek of bias.
Tilda Swinton - We need to talk about Kevin Emma Thompson - Saving Mr Banks Toni Collette - Hereditary Taraji P Hennson - Hidden Figures Delroy Lindo - Da 5 Bloods Emily Blunt - A quiet place Williem Defoe - The Lighthouse Ann Dowd - Mass Song Kang-ho - Parasite Hilary Swank - Conviction Nicole Kidman - Detroyer John Goodman - 10 Cloverfield Lane Aisling Franciosi - The Nightingale All to name a few
-For Nightcrawler Rene Russo and Jake Gyllenhaal..... especially Jake..... but that year was so strong with such great nominees...... -Matthew McConaughey for Interstellar -Amy Adams for Arrival (Best actress) and Nocturnal animals (Best supporting Actress) -Jessica Chastain for Miss Sloane -Ray Liotta for Marriage story -Toni Collette and Alex Wolff for Hereditary -Florence Pugh for Midsommar -Lupita Nyongo for Us -Anya Taylor Joy for VVitch -Sam Rockwell for JoJo Rabit or/and Richard Jewell -Emma Stone for Cruella (that monologue OMG!!) -Ryan Gosling for Blue valentine -Hailee Steinfeld for Edge of seventeen -Alicia Vikander for Ex machina and Light between the oceans -Rooney Mara for Una. -Cameron Diaz for Counselor (honestly her darkest role ever played brilliantly but the whole script was so messy....) -Andrew Garfield for Social network and/or Never let me go -Carey Mulligan and Keira Knightley for Never let me go -Keira Knightley for Anna Karenina -Anna Paquin for Margaret -Kirsten Dunst and Charlotte Gainsbourg for Melancholia
Kirsten Dunst not being nominated for Melancholia is one of the snubs I remember being really upset about at the time, and it still annoys me. She was so wonderful in it. I also wish Never Let Me Go got more attention as while I can understand the film is not for everyone as it's quite melodramatic in tone (which I like but not everyone does) the performances are stellar and really elevate it. Possibly they just didn't know who to pick, but Keira Knightley would be my top choice. And with all the very correct outrage for Toni Collette not being nominated, it's also baffling to me that Alex Wolff wasn't in there either, he gave a unique and extremely effective performance that stays with me well after the film is over. When he dissociates in the car and afterward it feels completely real.
I would have included Jacob Tremblay for "Room". The scene where his character sees the world for the first time gets me every time and I think he should have been recognized for that superb - super mature - work!
James McAvoy in Split. The dude just goes for it and gives what I think is the best performance of his career. Everybody knows that he should have at least been nominated.
It’s crazy to think there may not have been much enthusiasm for Till when Danielle WAS Till. Her performance is everything in that movie and was truly handed to the academy on a silver platter. Just egregious. I do wonder if it were in 6th or 7th place. In that case, since BP gets 10 slots, why not increase the acting slots? At least by one or two.
Not really. Black people didn't even like Till. They were so sick and tired of the characture of the broken black mother stereotypes. That's what Deadwyler played, if you saw Mamie irl she was nothing like Deadwyler played, that's why they embraced Woman King because it got to see Black women kicking butt and being awesome.
@harmenmoes9138 Gina Prince was critics choice and bafta nominated. Let's be real the woman King shoulda gotten anywhere upto 10 noms 1. Picture 2. Director 3. Actress 4. Supporting Actress 5. Score 6. Editing 7. Costumes 8. Hair and Make Up 9. Production Design 10. Song
Oh my gosh, this is one of my favorite topics to talk about. I agree with ALL of these so hard (I haven’t seen Before Midnight or Drive but I’m sure you’re right). For Mass, Martha Plimpton is who really tore my heart out but as you said, everyone deserved the nom, as did the movie. Toni was the obvious number one so I knew you’d come through there. Also SO happy to hear shoutouts for Andrew in Social Network. My additions would be Awkwafina in The Farewell (simply incredible performance by a usually comedic actor) and, from the same year, Willem Dafoe in The Lighthouse (weird ass movie that I didn’t even love but I feel like his performance is undeniably awards-worthy). You continue to deliver!!!
I don't fully agree with Andrew Garfield. To be honest, for me, both of the main performances in The Social Network: Jesse as Zuckerberg, and Andrew as his friend, were not Oscar-worthy at all, and quite bland. But out of the two, Andrew was def the better one. Maybe he could have gotten in the place of Mark Ruffalo because Ruffallo's role in The Kids Are All Right wasn't an amazing one either, and it could be argued that Garfield's one was better. That is all as the nominations go in this category in 2011, but the supporting actor winner that year was absolutely spot on: Christian Bale in The Fighter is a masterpiece of a performance. He was better Dicky than Dicky!
Besides the ones you've included on your list I believe these performances also deserve a shout: David Oyelowo (Selma), Ethan Hawke (First Reformed), Adam Sandler (Uncut Gems), Willem Defoe (The Lighthouse), Delroy Lindo (Da 5 Bloods), Florence Pugh (Midsommar), Ryan Gosling (Blue Valentine), James Franco (The Disaster Artist), Mads Mikkelsen (Another Round/The Hunt), Elsie Fisher (Eight Grade), Marcello Fonte (Dogman), Tom Cruise (Rock of Ages), Dakota Johnson (Cha Cha Real Smooth)
Love to see Toni, Danielle, Lupita, Ann and Jake in this list I would give also a nod yo Robert Pattinson for Good Time William Dafoe for The Lighthouse Patrick Stewart for Logan Mike Faist for West SIDE Story Catriona Balfe and Jamie Dornan for Belfast Anthony Ramos for In the Heights And the one that i think should have won her category but wasnt nominated is Olga Mereditz for In the Heights
My Top 5 Oscar Snubs ever since 2010: 1. Jake Gyllenhaal- Nightcrawler (Still makes me upset to this day that he got snubbed, just an exceptional and committed career best performance from him.) 2. Amy Adams - Arrival 3. Tom Hanks - Captain Phillips 4. Andrew Garfield - The Social Network 5. Taron Egerton - Rocketman (He did an incredible job playing Elton John from his singing and emotions. I thought he was way better than Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody.) Honorable Mentions: Willem Dafoe - The Lighthouse Adam Sandler - Uncut Gems Lupita Nyong’o- Us Awkwafina - The Farewell Caitroina Balfe - Belfast Leonardo DiCaprio- Django Unchained (That skull scene alone should’ve gotten him nominated.) Claire Foy - First Man Elsie Fisher - Eighth Grade Charlize Theron - Mad Max: Fury Road (I would replace Jennifer Lawrence in Joy with Theron that year.) Albert Brooks - Drive
Omggggg i am soooo happy you included Alicia for Ex-Machina!! I remember watching that movie and just being in awe of what she was able to achieve. I actually love the movie overall and believe it is a hidden gem most have never even heard of. But yeah she was pretty remarkable.
Albert Brooks - what an amazing actor - remember his speech about how William Hurt’s character is really the devil in BN? & what about his great comic performance as Dr. Butz in Critical Care? Not a great film that he is great in. He is riveting in everything he does!!!
The Amy Adams and Toni Collette ones still hurt, those are career best performances (will never inderstand wtf happened with the Arrival nom, it makes absolutely no sense)
My number one snub of the 2010s is Taraji P. Henson for Hidden Figures. Her performance as Katherine was astounding, and I've never understood how the Academy could snub her, especially seeing how Octavia Spencer got nominated for the same movie.
One I never see get brought up is Daniel Bruhl in Rush. It’s a very calculated performance where Bruhl is basically expected to play a real-life person as a borderline sociopath, but he absolutely nailed it - and got nominated at both the Golden Globes and the BAFTAs for it. But the film ended up going empty-handed on Oscar night.
The fact Drive 2011 didn’t get a best picture nomination meanwhile “Extremely loud & Incredibly close” somehow managed to sneak in. Probably one of the worst best picture nominees.
@@TheAwardsContenderI can kinda see why it didn’t. The academy doesn’t usually go for such violent films to begin with (or at least not give them wins). Some exceptions are silence of the lambs or the departed for winning but that’s about it
i casually watched some of your other videos about acting awards and always wondered, if there might be one about missed oscar nominations and whether toni colette would be on it. abd lo and behold there is a video, AND SHE'S NUMBER ONE! i think about her incredible performance on a regular basis for years now, and how she deserved so much recognition for this stellar showing.
When i see the title of this video , First come on my mind is Toni Collete in Hereditary ,absolutly phenomenal performence ,you really can feel the depression in her performace just by see her face
Thank you for mentioning Julie Delpy in this video. She is often overlooked but she is a brilliant actress who has a natural gift. She is so good that it does not seem like she is acting. What a great talent!
I completely agree with you about Collette, Adams, Gyllenhaal (Rene Russo deserved one too), Dowd (and everyone in the cast) and N'yongo. I get disappointed as well in some of the choices, but I always justify it by feeling the voting is so close and one or two votes could knock them out of contention. Deadwyler should have been in as well, but I just don't get Michelle Williams at all (found her performance over the top hammy like the movie) and, if anything, she should have been supporting.
A year late, but I have an unpopular opinion: I know many people won't agree with me on this, but I believe Topher Grace was excellent in 'Blackkklansman'. I think it could've been an interesting nomination, but since he's best known for his more 'juveline' roles (Eric Forman, for example) and isn't that much of a 'prestige' actor, people didn't take him seriously enough. So, when nominations came, they decided to go for Adam Driver, who is more of an 'indie darling' and is more respected in the industry. I don't know what you guys think. By the way, I'm not throwing shade at Driver by any means. He's one of my favorite actors. It's just that I think Grace's role was a bit more interesting. But I like both actors a lot.
I looked up Mass after watching your video because your description intrigued me. I adore both Ann Dowd and Martha Plimpton, so seeing that they did a film together is super exciting! One note though, the Wikipedia page for Mass says it premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival. IMDB also has it dated 2021.
My list: 1. Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler) 2. Amy Adams (Arrival) 3. Toni Collete (Hereditary) 4. Lupita Nyong'o (Us) 5. Danielle Deadwyler (Till) 6. Timothée Chalamet (Beautiful Boy) 7. Andrew Garfield (The Social Network) 8. Tilda Swinton (We need to talk about Kevin) 9. Lady Gaga (House of Gucci) 10. Taron Edgerton (Rocketman) Honorable mentions: Lucas Hedges (Boy Erased) Taraji P. Henson (Hidden Figures) Leonardo DiCaprio (Djiango Unchained) Emma Thompson (Saving Mr. Banks) Willem Dafoe (The Lighthouse) Jacob Tremblay (Room) Michael Fassbender (Shame)
A new series, lucky us! Your videos are so cleverly and amusing written, and your presentation is charming and compelling. This video was a pleasure to watch, and you're so right, Gyllenhaal and especially the chimeric Toni Collette deserved more recognition for their roles.
I met Alicia Vikander at a party shortly after her Oscar win. And I congratulated her for the Oscar, but said "You were great, but you actually deserved an Oscar for Ex Machina instead." Vikander is for the record very friendly, extremely humble and has no diva antics whatsoever.
@@TheAwardsContender She took it well, whereas her PR manager was shocked. But she was super friendly, too. Did not see the convo taking that turn, though, but was happy to hear that someone actually had seen "Ex Machina".
This is my list: Michael Fassbender, Shame Matthew McC, Killer Joe Jake Gyllenhaal, Nightcrawler Amy Adams, Arrival Toni Collette, Hereditary Lupita Nyong'o, Us
Killer Joe is so damn underrated. I love that movie. 😂 Matthew M had a couple of really good movies that he should’ve been nominated for. Mud would be another one.
Leaving out Amy adams and putting in Meryl streep makes clear the favoritism that the Academy has with Meryl streep. Others: Helen mirren(Trumbo) Holly hunter(The big sick) James franco(The disaster artist) Ethan hawke(First reformed) Adam sandler(Uncut gems) Willem dofoe(The lighthouse)
Honestly incredible picks, and I agree 100% with the top 10, especially the top 4 and most importantly Top 1, yeah, Toni’s performance is a once in a lifetime , how she portrait grief from a very human and real way, and part of why the movie is so draining and oppressive is because u FEEL what she’s feeling, is like the same feeling of going to a funeral in real life and seen the screams, the pain, it was all to real and she was by far the best acting that year, hell is one of the best performances I seen in my life, top 5 one
I really liked this video. Next time you do one can you also refresh our memory with what year each snub was as well as the other actors who were nominated? Just a suggestion, keep up the good work!
Great video - and I agree with you wholeheartedly especially about Toni Collette. Funnily enough when you were talking about horror movie bias I immediately thought of Toni and then there it was as your no. 1 snub. Agreed. It's ridiculous about the whole horror movie bias - it's an intense and emotive genre when done right but there are those, and I bet they are in the award show members that equate horror with slasher so it's immediately dismissed. What a shame. She is phenomenal in it and it's baffling how she was overlooked. You frequently mention good performances in so-so movies or movies that weren't popular. They cannot seem to separate the performance from the movie itself. And isn't the performance what they should be focusing on? My own personal outrage at Oscar snubs is Leslie Manville for Another Year - one of the most heart-breaking performances I have ever seen - the best portrayal of depression put on screen and apart from a Bafta nomination and some others, she was hideously overlooked.
Just found your Chanel love you mentioning brooks in drive that movie overall is so underrated honestly one of my favorite films of the last decade and i don't see nobody mention it
I loved Lupita in US. I also think Jennifer Hudson gave the best performance of 2021. To this day, Lupita and Jennifer are the only black actresses who scored Leading And Supporting nods from SAG (apart from Viola). But the Academy chose safed options. I do think if Jennifer was submitted in Musical/ Comedy she woulda won the Globe over Rachel Zegler
@@BFA100yeoh was fantastic but I think it came down to the fact that the only really competitive top category Tar was really going for was best actress while everything everywhere was competitive everywhere
Love this list! One performance I would love to add (in my humble opinion) is Mia Goth in Pearl. Her performance was so dynamic I was absolutely glued to the screen. I wish horror films were recognized more in general, some amazing films over the past decade that fly completely under the radar. Honorable mentions to Naomi Watts in Mulholland Drive, Laura Dern in Inland Empire, and Sheryl Lee in Fire Walk with Me (as you can see I love Lynch)
My top 10 1. Toni Collette - Hereditary 2. Géza Röhrig - Son of Saul 3. Everyone in Parasite 4. Michael Fassbender - Shame 5. Emma Thompson - Saving Mr Banks 6. Robert Pattinson & Willem Dafoe - The Lighthouse 7. Jake Gyllenhaal - Nightcrawler 8. Andrew Garfield - The Social Network 9. Bryce Dallas Howard - The Help 10. Nicole Kidman - The Paperboy
Yes, this list is perfect! I'd say the cast of "Mass" had an uphill battle especially the cast members would be considered Supporting but both Dowd and Plimpton wete astonishing. With lesser actresses they would have been one note performances! Also, you left out Lily Tomlin in "Grandma" she was campaigned in Supporting but she was the title character and in every scene in the film and should have received a lead nomination!
The Top 5 Acting Oscar Snubs from the 2010's that you left out Adam Sandler (Uncut Gems) Taraji P. Henson (Hidden Figures) Emma Thompson (Saving Mr. Banks) Tom Hanks (Captain Phillips) Tilda Swinton (We Need To Talk About Kevin)
I agree Danielle Deadwyler should have been nominated but I’m positive she’ll be back in the Oscars race as it was announced she’ll be in the film adaptation of The Piano Lesson. This is an August Wilson play and Viola Davis is known for getting Oscar nominations for his work. So….🙏🙏🙏🙏
There's a lot of good buzz for that film especially because of the play which is in contention at the Tonys this year. She might finally get recognition for that film hopefully, it has a strong ensemble of actors too.
Toni Collette’s “Hereditary” is THE PERFORMANCE OF THE DECADE! She was phenomenal! This is the “Sophie’s Choice” performance of this generation.
She should’ve being nominated and won. It’s ridiculous!
Agreed!!
Indeed! It’s truly a once in a lifetime performance. She was robbed!
Just watching her in the clips are intense. Got the chills just like the first time I saw the movie.
They always hate on horror movies. It's a shame too. There're a lot of great horror movie performances that never get the credit they deserve.
Scale it back now.
Gyllenhaal was better than everyone else nominated that year in the Best Actor category. He should have WON and he didn't even get nominated. Truly infuriating.
Jake's a terrible actor, Razzies are the only awards he deserves to get.
@@arontamas5639 I agree that the majority of the performances were great. Gyllenhall was better.
You can’t compare performances
But Micheal Keaton was great in Birdman I thought
Hard disagree. He's one of those actors I cannot take seriously because you can ALWAYS see the wheels spinning.
Great picks!
I agree with all those except for JLo.
@@poett8875 I always thought JoBeth Williams deserved a nomination for her work in Poltergeist. It's always been that way, sadly. :-(
Right?! There was most definitely a huge vocal crowd that was upset over her not getting recognized. I feel like her performance and that movie kind of reinvigorated the conversation about horror movies never being recognized by the academy.
Yay, thank you, Jonathan!
@@TheAwardsContender Will you make more snubs video's?
Toni Collette 100% agree. One of the most underated Aussie actors
Love her!
I agree 100% on Toni Collette. What happened there? She is crazy talented and under appreciated. That was one of the best performances of all time!
Agreed!
Completely agree. Toni Collete in Hereditary will go down as the biggest snub in history. She is astounding in that movie. Just minutes of her grief performance alone when she’s sobbing. I was floored. The genre bias really is egregious b/c Lupita in Us was also an incredible performance
Agreed!!
Jake Gyllenhall in Nightcrawler is a magnificent performance, Oscar worthy . Never been better .
Kirsten Dunst in Melancholia deserved an honorable mention
Just saw that movie for the 1st time. As great as Kirstin was, I thought Charlotte Gainsbourg was every bit her equal. Powerhouse performances!
Great picks!
Thanks for watching!
So true!! Horror shouldn’t be tossed aside!
All great performances!
James McAvoy for SPLIT. I walked out of that movie flabbergasted by his performance. Haven’t watched the Oscars since…
GREAT performance!
I’m so glad that you used my suggestion!!!
My Original list:
My list
1: Amy Adam’s (Arrival)
2: Mila Kunis (Black Swan)
3: Andrew Garfield (The Social Network)
4: Miles Teller (Whiplash)
5: Toni Collete (Hereditary)
6: Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street/Babylon)
7: Taraji P Henson (Hidden Figures)
8: Lupita N’yongo (Us)
9: Diego Calva (Babylon)
10: Jake gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler)
Yeah Taraji should’ve totally gotten a nomination for Best Actress!
omg Miles Teller for whiplash is such a good one! Sooo overlooked he was amazing
Great picks!
Yaaaaas to Number 2
Taraji was ROBBED
Essie Davis for the Babadook! She was incredible and received a handful of critics and festival noms for her performance. But the film never gained awards traction since it was horror :/
YES, great pick!
Great list!!! I wanna add:
Emily Blunt - A Quiet Place and Mary Poppins
Tilda Swinton - We Need To Talk About Kevin
Jacob Tremblay - Room
Jennifer Lopez - Hustlers
Anyone from Parasite, esp Song Kang Ho (Dad) and Park So Dam (daughter)
Good picks!
Great picks, except Lopez
When Ms. Collette said “I AM YOUR MOTHER!” I felt that…
So happy to see Julie Delpy on your list! I think she was robbed for Sunset and Midnight. Such beautiful performances.
I love her so much!
happy to see Song Kang Ho make it in, Parasite is still probably my favorite Oscar winner in recent memory!! i wonder if he could've taken on Brad Pitt in supporting that year because there was so much love for Pitt and i think this was OUATIH's only win that night, but if 2023 proved anything its that the academy doesn't care about consolation prizes so a Song Kang Ho win could have been totally possible imo if the campaign and the nom were there
Thanks for watching!
Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood also won an Oscar for Best Production Design.
Nodding in agreement the whole way through, but in the back of my mind I’m thinking “Brian’s not gonna leave off Toni”. You did our girl proud ❤
I was thinking about it too 🤭
Oh yes, I was never forgetting her!
Love this new series and those are some great picks. Other personal snubs I'd include are:
Delroy Lindo for Da 5 Bloods
David Oyelowo for Selma
Jessica Chastain for Molly's Game
Shailene Woodley for The Descendants
Nicolas Cage for Pig
Mia Goth for Pearl
Adam Sandler for Uncut Gems
Jennifer Lopez for Hustlers
Tom Hanks for Captain Phillips
Margot Robbie for Wolf of Wall Street
Lots to talk about for sure!!
My number one is Adam Sandler for Uncut Gems. I can’t believe he was overlooked. I know that movie was either loved or hated, very divisive, but he was phenomenal!
Ooooh, good one!
Overlooking Mr. Sandler in that film is unforgivable!!!
Adam should have been nominated and I would have added Eric Bogosian for Best Supporting Actor
parasite ladies should’ve filled the best supporting actress category. It would’ve been better over whatever they nominated.
That would’ve been awesome!
You almost got me there! I really thought for a second that you'd forgot to include Toni Collete's performance in Hereditary. I absolutely agree in all levels that she should've been nominated for this role. She's magnificent
She is amazing!
Not including the ones on this list (Because YES!) here are some other ones I’ll throw out:
• Nicholas Cage - Pig
• Entire Cast - Straight Outta Compton
• Anne Dorval - Mommy
• Ryan Gosling - Blade Runner 2049
• Aubrey Plaza - Black Bear
• Willem Dafoe - The Lighthouse
• Florence Pugh - Lady Macbeth
• Simon Rex - Red Rocket
• Dev Patel - Green Knight
• Olivia Colman - Tyrannosaur
• Aisling Franciosi, Sam Claflin, and Baykali Ganambarr - The Nightingale
• Mads Mikkelson - The Hunt
• Adam Sandler - Uncut Gems
• Ruth Negga - Passing
• Lubna Azabal - Incendies
Edit: Forgot Logan Marshall Green - Upgrade
Excellent picks!!
I'm glad you mentioned Ex-Machina because I still think Oscar Isaac deserved a Best Supporting Actor nomination. He was incredible in that movie with a very dynamic performance.
Yes, he was snubbed as well!
Great list! I would also add Kirsten Dunst in Melancholia, Kate Winslet in Ammonite, Jennifer Aniston in Cake and Emily Blunt in Sicario or A Quiet Place.
Yes, love these picks!
Yes to all 4!
Jennifer Aniston not being nominated for Cake was a shock.
I agree with Kirsten Dunst 💯!!
Thank you so much!
My Biggest Snubs:
Taron Egerton - Rocketman 2019
Alan Rickman - Deathly Hallows Part 2 2011
Robert Pattinson - Good Time 2017
Johnny Depp - Black Mass 2013
Ralph Fiennes - Grand Budapest Hotel 2014
Emma Thompson - Saving Mr Banks 2013
Amy Adams - Arrival 2016
Carey Mulligan - She Said 2022
Timothy Spall - Mr Turner 2014
Jason Isaacs & Ann Dowd - Mass 2021
Mads Mikkelsen - Another Round
Viola Davis - Woman King
Andrew Garfield - Social Network
Timothee Chalamet - Beautiful Boy
Eddie Redmayne - Good Nurse
All 3 Leads - Perks of Being a Wallflower
Toni Collette should have a handful of Oscar nominations- i think she’s one of our best actresses and should very well be named an Oscar Winner
Andrew Garfield was my favorite thing about The Social Network.
Ann Dowd is amazing in everything she's in.
10. Andrew Garfield, The Social Network
9. Albert Brooks, Drive
8. Margot Robbie, Babylon
7. Toni Collette, Hereditary
6. Rosamund Pike, I care a lot
5. Colin Farrell, In Bruges
4. Jason Isaacs, Mass
3. Amy Adams, Arrival
2. Hugh Jackman, Prisoners
1. Jake Gyllenhaal, Nightcrawler
Great picks
@@TheAwardsContender thanks 👍
Yes, good point!
Thank you for naming Julie Delpy. She was near perfection on Midnight.
One I think who deserved an Oscar nom is Ralph Fiennes at The Grand Budapest Hotel.
Toni Collette was absolutely robbed.
She’s so great!!
At least Hong Chau was finally nominated this year for The Whale
Great picks!
Tilda Swinton - We need to talk about Kevin
Emma Thompson - Saving Mr Banks
Toni Collette - Hereditary
Taraji P Hennson - Hidden Figures
Delroy Lindo - Da 5 Bloods
Emily Blunt - A quiet place
Williem Defoe - The Lighthouse
Ann Dowd - Mass
Song Kang-ho - Parasite
Hilary Swank - Conviction
Nicole Kidman - Detroyer
John Goodman - 10 Cloverfield Lane
Aisling Franciosi - The Nightingale
All to name a few
Love these!
Yeah someone remembered Aisling franciosi. She was breathtaking in the Nightingale!
-For Nightcrawler Rene Russo and Jake Gyllenhaal..... especially Jake..... but that year was so strong with such great nominees......
-Matthew McConaughey for Interstellar
-Amy Adams for Arrival (Best actress) and Nocturnal animals (Best supporting Actress)
-Jessica Chastain for Miss Sloane
-Ray Liotta for Marriage story
-Toni Collette and Alex Wolff for Hereditary
-Florence Pugh for Midsommar
-Lupita Nyongo for Us
-Anya Taylor Joy for VVitch
-Sam Rockwell for JoJo Rabit or/and Richard Jewell
-Emma Stone for Cruella (that monologue OMG!!)
-Ryan Gosling for Blue valentine
-Hailee Steinfeld for Edge of seventeen
-Alicia Vikander for Ex machina and Light between the oceans
-Rooney Mara for Una.
-Cameron Diaz for Counselor (honestly her darkest role ever played brilliantly but the whole script was so messy....)
-Andrew Garfield for Social network and/or Never let me go
-Carey Mulligan and Keira Knightley for Never let me go
-Keira Knightley for Anna Karenina
-Anna Paquin for Margaret
-Kirsten Dunst and Charlotte Gainsbourg for Melancholia
Love these, thanks!
If Riseborough not the twitter acting marketing campaign had was Deadwyler nominated!
@@SoulKnightKing But, The Woman King was not even in costumes nominated. And Till would be here. And Robbie & Lawrence were absolutely not nr. 6
@harmenmoes9138 Gina Prince was critics choice and bafta nominated. Let's be real the woman King shoulda gotten anywhere upto 10 noms
1. Picture
2. Director
3. Actress
4. Supporting Actress
5. Score
6. Editing
7. Costumes
8. Hair and Make Up
9. Production Design
10. Song
@@SoulKnightKing The Woman King deserved alone an costume nom
Yay, glad you enjoyed it!!
There’s plenty in mind that I can think of…
•Toni Collete - Hereditary
•Michael B Jordan - Black Panther
•Lupita Nyong’o - Us
•Jennifer Lopez - Hustlers
•Jason Mitchell - Straight Outta Compton
•Awkwafina - The Farewell
•Taron Egerton - Rocketman
•Adam Sandler - Uncut Gems
•Jacob Tremblay - Room
•Taraji P. Henson - Hidden Figures
•Janelle Monáe - Glass Onion
•Emily Blunt - A Quiet Place
Yes, excellent picks!
Glass onion was the 2020s.
Nah bruh you were watching the anti social network😂
Besides the ones you've included on your list I believe these performances also deserve a shout: David Oyelowo (Selma), Ethan Hawke (First Reformed), Adam Sandler (Uncut Gems), Willem Defoe (The Lighthouse), Delroy Lindo (Da 5 Bloods), Florence Pugh (Midsommar), Ryan Gosling (Blue Valentine), James Franco (The Disaster Artist), Mads Mikkelsen (Another Round/The Hunt), Elsie Fisher (Eight Grade), Marcello Fonte (Dogman), Tom Cruise (Rock of Ages), Dakota Johnson (Cha Cha Real Smooth)
Great picks!
Great video as always. Totally agree about Hereditary and Nightcrawler’s acting performances.
Thanks so much!
Love to see Toni, Danielle, Lupita, Ann and Jake in this list
I would give also a nod yo Robert Pattinson for Good Time
William Dafoe for The Lighthouse
Patrick Stewart for Logan
Mike Faist for West SIDE Story
Catriona Balfe and Jamie Dornan for Belfast
Anthony Ramos for In the Heights
And the one that i think should have won her category but wasnt nominated is Olga Mereditz for In the Heights
My Top 5 Oscar Snubs ever since 2010:
1. Jake Gyllenhaal- Nightcrawler (Still makes me upset to this day that he got snubbed, just an exceptional and committed career best performance from him.)
2. Amy Adams - Arrival
3. Tom Hanks - Captain Phillips
4. Andrew Garfield - The Social Network
5. Taron Egerton - Rocketman (He did an incredible job playing Elton John from his singing and emotions. I thought he was way better than Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody.)
Honorable Mentions:
Willem Dafoe - The Lighthouse
Adam Sandler - Uncut Gems
Lupita Nyong’o- Us
Awkwafina - The Farewell
Caitroina Balfe - Belfast
Leonardo DiCaprio- Django Unchained (That skull scene alone should’ve gotten him nominated.)
Claire Foy - First Man
Elsie Fisher - Eighth Grade
Charlize Theron - Mad Max: Fury Road (I would replace Jennifer Lawrence in Joy with Theron that year.)
Albert Brooks - Drive
Great picks!
Mia Goth in Pearl is unreal... I hope she plays Shelley D in a biopic in X she was totally serving 3 Woman
Which btw 3 woman Shelly should have been nominated and sissy
Great list I'd add Adam Sandler for Uncut Gems and Jason Mitchell for Straight Outta Compton personally
Good picks!
Albert Brooks - Drive
Adam Sandler - Uncut Gems
Toni Colette - Hereditary
Edit: I can't believe he actually listed Albert Brooks on here. Nice
They really need to add a Best Horror category to the Oscars line-up. Agreed with your entire list.
Omggggg i am soooo happy you included Alicia for Ex-Machina!! I remember watching that movie and just being in awe of what she was able to achieve. I actually love the movie overall and believe it is a hidden gem most have never even heard of. But yeah she was pretty remarkable.
Jake Gyllenhaal and Toni Collette snubs still infuriate me..... It's absolutely baffling that they didn't even get nominated
Toni Collette gave THE horror movie performance of our time.
I know, right?
Albert Brooks in Drive is brilliant.
Also A Most Violent Year.
Oscar Isaac needs an Oscar. Ex Machina to start. Drive. A Most Violent Year ,Dune,Star Wars.. among others .
Agreed!
Albert Brooks - what an amazing actor - remember his speech about how William Hurt’s character is really the devil in BN? & what about his great comic performance as Dr. Butz in Critical Care? Not a great film that he is great in. He is riveting in everything he does!!!
I thought he was great in Midnight Run where he gave De Niro a run for his money.
The Amy Adams and Toni Collette ones still hurt, those are career best performances (will never inderstand wtf happened with the Arrival nom, it makes absolutely no sense)
I know, right?!?
Totally agree with you about Toni Collette. Spectacular performance!!
Love her in Hereditary!
My number one snub of the 2010s is Taraji P. Henson for Hidden Figures. Her performance as Katherine was astounding, and I've never understood how the Academy could snub her, especially seeing how Octavia Spencer got nominated for the same movie.
Michael Fassbinder is absolutely my #1 pick. He’s absolutely amazing.
Love his performance!
For what? He got 2 nominations in the 2010s
@ Shame
One I never see get brought up is Daniel Bruhl in Rush. It’s a very calculated performance where Bruhl is basically expected to play a real-life person as a borderline sociopath, but he absolutely nailed it - and got nominated at both the Golden Globes and the BAFTAs for it. But the film ended up going empty-handed on Oscar night.
Yes, good one!
I LOVE Elizabeth Moss!!! And I'm going to check out The Invisible Man, since you said Moss gave an Oscar-caliber performance!I respect your opinion!
Yay, love her so much!
The fact Drive 2011 didn’t get a best picture nomination meanwhile “Extremely loud & Incredibly close” somehow managed to sneak in. Probably one of the worst best picture nominees.
Yes, Drive should’ve done better at the Oscars!
@@TheAwardsContenderI can kinda see why it didn’t. The academy doesn’t usually go for such violent films to begin with (or at least not give them wins). Some exceptions are silence of the lambs or the departed for winning but that’s about it
Daniel Brühl for Rush is on my top 3.
i casually watched some of your other videos about acting awards and always wondered, if there might be one about missed oscar nominations and whether toni colette would be on it. abd lo and behold there is a video, AND SHE'S NUMBER ONE! i think about her incredible performance on a regular basis for years now, and how she deserved so much recognition for this stellar showing.
When i see the title of this video ,
First come on my mind is Toni Collete in Hereditary ,absolutly phenomenal performence ,you really can feel the depression in her performace just by see her face
Glad you enjoyed the video!
Don't Forget Benicio Del Toro's role in Sicario. His acting in the 3rd act was the best.
My list:
1. Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler)
2. Amy Adams (Arrival)
3. Toni Collete (Hereditary)
4. Lupita Nyong'o (Us)
5. Danielle Deadwyler (Till)
6. Timothée Chalamet (Beautiful Boy)
7. Andrew Garfield (The Social Network)
8. Tilda Swinton (We need to talk about Kevin)
9. Lady Gaga (House of Gucci)
10. Taron Edgerton (Rocketman)
Honorable mentions:
Lucas Hedges (Boy Erased)
Taraji P. Henson (Hidden Figures)
Leonardo DiCaprio (Djiango Unchained)
Emma Thompson (Saving Mr. Banks)
Willem Dafoe (The Lighthouse)
Jacob Tremblay (Room)
Michael Fassbender (Shame)
Great picks!
Bravo, Bravo, Bravo!! Your list is amazing! I can't agree with you more!!
A new series, lucky us! Your videos are so cleverly and amusing written, and your presentation is charming and compelling. This video was a pleasure to watch, and you're so right, Gyllenhaal and especially the chimeric Toni Collette deserved more recognition for their roles.
Yay, I’m glad you enjoyed it!
I met Alicia Vikander at a party shortly after her Oscar win. And I congratulated her for the Oscar, but said "You were great, but you actually deserved an Oscar for Ex Machina instead."
Vikander is for the record very friendly, extremely humble and has no diva antics whatsoever.
Haha, that’s so funny!
@@TheAwardsContender She took it well, whereas her PR manager was shocked. But she was super friendly, too. Did not see the convo taking that turn, though, but was happy to hear that someone actually had seen "Ex Machina".
This is my list:
Michael Fassbender, Shame
Matthew McC, Killer Joe
Jake Gyllenhaal, Nightcrawler
Amy Adams, Arrival
Toni Collette, Hereditary
Lupita Nyong'o, Us
Killer Joe is so damn underrated. I love that movie. 😂 Matthew M had a couple of really good movies that he should’ve been nominated for. Mud would be another one.
Great picks!
I totally agree with you on your #1 snub. It pissed me off too.
It’s such a spellbinding performance!
Leaving out Amy adams and putting in Meryl streep makes clear the favoritism that the Academy has with Meryl streep.
Others:
Helen mirren(Trumbo)
Holly hunter(The big sick)
James franco(The disaster artist)
Ethan hawke(First reformed)
Adam sandler(Uncut gems)
Willem dofoe(The lighthouse)
I love that you mentioned Ann Dowd. She's always phenomenal! Toni Collette for Heriditory and Nathan Lane for The Birdcage always come to mind for me.
Brian, you’re like my Oscars spirit animal
Haha, I’m glad!
Agreed, thanks for watching!
I really liked this video. Next time you do one can you also refresh our memory with what year each snub was as well as the other actors who were nominated? Just a suggestion, keep up the good work!
Will factor this in when I make future videos in this series!
Manville is amazing!! Thanks for your informative comment!
I would also add Mia Goth in Pearl - again genre-bias...the scene at the end where she's crying but smiling haunts me. Love your channel -
Mia Goth deserves to be on this list
Yes!!
@@TheAwardsContender she’s amazing
I will never get over Toni Collette snub..,, ever 😢
So frustrating!!
Good picks!
Till is a great film. It is a history film and Danielle Deadwyler deserved an Oscar win for her brilliant performance in Till.
Agreed!
But that Best Actress race this year was between Cate Blanchett and Michelle Yeoh with Yeoh ultimately winning the Oscar.
@@BFA100yeoh was fantastic but I think it came down to the fact that the only really competitive top category Tar was really going for was best actress while everything everywhere was competitive everywhere
John Hawkes in The Sessions is #1 for me, followed by David Oyelowo in Selma.
Good picks!
Thank you!!
All worthy choices. I would add Ethan Hawke for First Reformed and Adam Sandler for Uncut Gems.
Yes!
My top 10
1. Toni Collette - Hereditary
2. Géza Röhrig - Son of Saul
3. Everyone in Parasite
4. Michael Fassbender - Shame
5. Emma Thompson - Saving Mr Banks
6. Robert Pattinson & Willem Dafoe - The Lighthouse
7. Jake Gyllenhaal - Nightcrawler
8. Andrew Garfield - The Social Network
9. Bryce Dallas Howard - The Help
10. Nicole Kidman - The Paperboy
Great picks!
Love Tomlin!
Yes easily Tomlin over Lawrence that year.
The Top 5 Acting Oscar Snubs from the 2010's that you left out
Adam Sandler (Uncut Gems)
Taraji P. Henson (Hidden Figures)
Emma Thompson (Saving Mr. Banks)
Tom Hanks (Captain Phillips)
Tilda Swinton (We Need To Talk About Kevin)
Good picks!
Fascinating channel, really enjoying your work.
🎬You hit the nail on the head with your commentary across the board.
Aww, thanks!
Great list! Confused why the title is snubs of the 2010’s but Never Rarely Sometimes Always, Mass, & Till were all released in the 2020’s..
Decided to throw in the last three years too, and 2010-2022 just looked awkward in the title.
Fingers crossed!!
