Little Darryl here. Actually braid is the best application for any bait. Especially a spoon. Lol. Dude you crack me up. Great info. Bet I'm into the only one thinking I need to change my setups. 😂
I don’t really disagree with you, but I will say this about snagging. Getting snagged on a crank (or anything) with high test braid you’ll stretch the hooks out not break off, which I prefer losing terminal tackle vs a whole lure. Happened the other day actually. I broke my leader off and had no replacements, got snagged and stretched a hook. Just had to replace the hook later, kept my $7 lure though. Also, the 8 strand braid is much better. You get a smoother line. In tree climbing we have 12,16,24 strand, the 24 strand is smooth as butter, and so that reflects the same for 4 strand vs 8 strand braid. More strands means smoother jacket, which means farther casts and quieter operation.
I use nothing but braid. Usually 15# and a 8-12# mono or flouro leader. I also tend to use a medium rod, where most would use a MH. Also crankbait rods on squarebills, cranks, and some topwater. I get much better feel and rod flexes instead of line stretching.
I am in a similar boat with not having a ton of set ups. So I run braid to whatever type of leader line fits the situation I need. Works great. I do tend to run longer leader lines on bait caster moving style baits.
I tend to run braid to flouro on all my combos. I’ve done them every way and would have nothing but problems with straight flouro so I found braid to leader seems to work best for me personally. I stopped running straight braid for the most part though because it’s just too much sometimes and when u get snagged it’s too hard to snap the line I used to just say f it and cut it lol. Ur definitely spot on with straight braid to spinnerbaits though I’ve done that too often and would have the hardest time getting them to run right and not get tangled like braid and spinnerbaits love to get all twisted up so I don’t do that anymore. I’ve also came down a lot on the strength of my braid I normally just stick to 20-30lb now there’s really no need for 65 or 50 even when frogging or fishing the ca delta. Anyways, ur right about straight braid to any of those baits but I say braid to leader is perfectly acceptable as well lol. Also, the 13 fishing jabber jaws r great baits and look great. 13 fishing doesn’t get the recognition they deserve their hard baits r definitely high quality and have some of the best paint jobs and the hooks they use r just right.

Almost always agree with your comments but have to say I have used braid of some type for over 20 years with my favorite of all time bait, the spinner bait. Never felt like I lost a fish due to line but I don't fish in the land of giants either and never use braid over 30#. Works for me.

I use lots of braid, 8lb,10,20,30,50,65 here in florida. Floro work good, just pricey. Cheap floro, curls up bad, premium line is premium $.so for a budget guy liters are more affordable. And why i use them vs. Filling w just floro.if i had the choice, no cost involved floro gets more bites, and is better for abrasions.
I agree, the only time I use braid fishing grass using a frog, jig and worm. I think todays rods are much more sensitive I think you can use mono or fluorocarbon with most techniques today.
Braid is a nightmare on walking baits and poppers when tied directly. Also anytime you are flipping wood jig or texas rig braid can dig in to the wood and even if you are a guy that is a braid to floro the knot is never a perfect length from lure. Too close and the knot gets jammed into the wood too long and the knot is always messing with you when you flip/pitch.
I used 2 different brands of braids. I had problems using it. When I tie the knot, I always wet it before I tighten it, after a couple of cast I noticed that the line 🪢 came apart at the knot. I could spread each strand of the fishing line. I use Sufix siege 12lbs and 14lbs mono
I just use a long leader it works great. Caught an 7.58lbs smallie on a KVD crank in a storm not long ag. With several 6-9lbs fish that Same trip. Consistent in the summer but I use a stretchy leader and I use a 8ft crank pole with a 6 foot leader.
I'm going to try out braid with a fluro for trout. Just 8 pound braid with 6 pound leader. Doesn't sound like I'll have the majority of the problems you are talking about.
I use 15 to 20 pound braided line most of the time. I have had more hooks bend and break before the line gives in many cases. On most crank baits I change the rings or use the eyelet the ring is attached to.
I know favorite does your rods. But St Croix has a chart up for what ever you are fishing what line types and size to use helps take out the guess work even the lure weight recommendations.
I have braid on all my reels,.. but I also have a length of either mono or flouro shock leader w/ FG knot but I never use straight braid to any lure,... I never lose fish from this system👍😎🤙
Please don’t tell the fish in Oklahoma, because I mainly use braid, and each if those lures work extremely well. I use Rapala Sufix 832 40 lbs equivalent to10 lb mono. My urban water fishing spot is loaded with moss. I got tired of losing big bass in the moss. So I went over to braid and it solved my issue. Also, for chatter bait, I kept losing fish, so I use a treble hook as my trailer. That too eliminated lose of fish. I don’t fish lakes, were I can see where your coming from, however in heavy mossy water, I will always prefer braid.
All my friends we use nothing but braid. You just don't set the hook super hard. I caught a bass on a spinner bait yesterday. Like I said. I dont do that super hard hook set. There definitely is a reason to use braid. 30 pound test, you won't break baits off in the fishes mouth
Braid with a spinner works fine but you have to prep R-Bend Spinner baits like he shows. Just use braid to wrap a heavy loop to change that R bend into a closed loop. Then the bait will not bend like he shows. Also braid definitely is way more sensitive and you can feel every limb bump, fall bump, and or when a fish strikes the baits
braid to flouro. i will say however that with a spinnerbait, i only use titanium wire ones with a closed loop. no issues. i also tend to just use a bendier rod. instead of fast action, i go to medium or mod fast.
Hello ! Brain. I forgot to let you know my spinning rod and reel setup for the worden original rooster tails 1/8 oz and 1/4 oz size. My spinning rod are a Todd huckabee dingo 7 foot 1- pc spinning rod and my spinning reel are a Dawia tatutla Lt size 2500 spinning reel.👍
Funny i found this video today because yesterday that very thing happened to me, i had a red devil lure on and 15lb J braid fishing for chain pickerel and when he hit POP ! Lost everything !
I use straight braid on all shallow diving crankbaits. Set the drag right and you will never have an issue. One of the greatest crankbait fisherman ever, David fritz, use nothing but braid on all of his crankbaits! Fishing cover the bait gets down quicker with braid being there's no stretch vs fluoro with the stretch the bait is gone from the cover by the time is gets down! Just what works for me!
I have used exclusivly braid since spider wire came out. I like it because it doesnt hold memory that causes knots. I use mono leader for my crappie and bait and weight setups were the line isnt moving to give it a little camoflage. Do to lack of stretch when using chatter and spinner baits it gives me a positive set without having to jerk the thing through and out of the fishes mouth. I always switch out the cheap hook on cheap lures. I find the more expensive lures have thicker and stronger hooks. But each of us have our own opinions and people should do as they want and not follow anyone on youtube. Heck people were using braided line long before monofilament came around as fishing line as we know it now wasnt invented until plastics.
Great info as always, but I Have a question. I have a 7ft 2inch heavy rod, looking to get a 7ft 11inch or 8 ft heavy what's the idea heavy rod leath for all situations?
I do that too but with fluorocarbon. Many people believe fluorocarbon is not usable for topwater a but it is. You just need a small piece on front of the braid. It’s a really good set up
I've run braided line since the beginning, but I've always put an FC leader on that's about twice the poundage of the main line. I get that a lot of anglers carry around 3-4 rods every time they go out, but I only bring just one.
@@greg6162 I typically use heavier leader. As emphasised in the video braid is a lot stronger than the rated poundage. 15lb test is more closer to 30lb test breakage. I fish mostly UL on a BFS reel. Currently I use 4lb braid on an 8lb flouro leader.
And the fourth bait is Jerkbaits? I’m starting to fish more and more with fc. Here in Sweden braid has been the go to line for every single angler for many years, but it’s starting to change. Thanks for the video!
Hey Brian I'm not trying to be a wise ass but I saw a video last year with Dave Fritz and he is useing braid for his crankbait s. He says he started useing braid so he can feel the bait better. But Brian I won't use it I use the fc crankin line by sunline.
Where can I buy that exact square bill crank bait? Love the color and size… just started fishing and I don’t have any crank baits yet Edit: I’m on a Nasci 2500 spinning reel so maybe I need a smaller size or would that work?
Brian is right, but if you've got to fish braid, loosen the drag a little and fish with a rod with more flex. The only time I may use braid for these 3 lures, is if I'm fishing it in a foot or less water. Braid floats, floro sinks.
Good stuff! I agree on mono or fluoro being better for those, with my limited combos, running leader has worked out best for me personally. Some of my rods, primary chatter bait rod for example, will have braid to 20ft of fluoro leader for some stretch.
I also don’t use braid on top water walking spooks or poppers. Braid gets wet and always ends up messing up the walking motion of the treble hook top water baits. Straight fluorocarbon for me. Braid flipping and pitching and a frog that’s about it lol
You will catch more fish on all 3 of those baits, especially the Spinnerbait on Mono. The stretch helps the fish get more of the bait in it’s mouth. The Spinnerbait would be the worst bait to fish on Braid
I think you miss more fish altogether using braid with baits that require a steady retrieve. Not just because the hooks tear out easier but because the stretch/give of monofilament makes it easier for the fish to take them. You might miss them on a spinnerbait especially when they are striking short
Very good video Brian, super helpful. I was wondering why I was having so much difficulty with those 3 specific lures. I was watching this video while at work so I didn’t hear you say if tying on a leader to braid would mitigate those problems?
what about using flouro/mono leader from my braid? I usually use about 6-9 feet uni to uni knotted flouro leader but I haven't hooked any hogs yet just some 2-4 lbers
Brian my man, i am at my breaking point. The rate in which I land a bass with a chatterbait is abysmal. If i have a sizable fish 3lbs and up, they always come off. I use a 7'6'' medium heavy rod and a shimano Curado, 15lb flouro. I mostly fish from the bank so I launch the bait as far as i can maybe 40-50 yards or so and they normally hit it that far out (this is my neighborhood lake, the bigger fish are out in the middle). Once they jump, they spit the hook. Every.. Time.. The only thing i can think of is that with my bait so far out, it stretches and i cant get a proper hookset. But then again thats why im using Flouro. Is it my gear set up? my hookset? or am i set up for failure expecting to land these fish im setting up on so far out.
David Fritts, one of the greatest crankbait/carolina rig fisherman ever totally disagrees with you. He uses straight braid because he fells the bottom better and gets a better hookup. Their is a tool called a drag on fishing reels and you need to set accordingly.
Great content Brian, thanks. Just for clarification, are you saying to not use braid at all with these 3 or would a 6' leader of flouro counter the negative effects of braid?
Use a mono leader trilene xl 8 to 15 lbs depending, the stretch is your friend and the fish dont see any difference between mono and fluorocarbon its just marketing bs. Mono is more abrasion resistant and better knot strength as well. And wayyy cheaper lol.
The best crankbait fisherman ever, David Fritts, uses braid on crankbaits. David has designed a lot of crankbaits we use.

Also anytime you are flipping wood jig or texas rig braid can dig in to the wood and even if you are a guy that is a braid to floro the knot is never a perfect length from lure. Too close and the knot gets jammed into the wood too long and the knot is always messing with you when you flip/pitch.
You need to practice more and sharpen your skills
But St Croix has a chart up for what ever you are fishing what line types and size to use helps take out the guess work even the lure weight recommendations.
i use braid on lipless cranks when fishing submerged grass would you say that is a exception or still no braid?????
Is it ok to fill my baitcaster with fluorocarbon line for crankbaits or should it be mono with a fluorocarbon leader?
So what setups should you be running braid? Is there a video on that?
I agree with all of these, except the chatter bait. I fish chatter bait on straight braid and I very seldom lose fish. Big or small.
Crank baiting with braid is my favorite. If you want some stretch learn to tie a fg knot and use a leader.
All my friends we use nothing but braid. You just don't set the hook super hard. I caught a bass on a spinner bait yesterday. Like I said. I dont do that super hard hook set. There definitely is a reason to use braid. 30 pound test, you won't break baits off in the fishes mouth
Are you able to use soft plastics on braid
Braid with a spinner works fine but you have to prep R-Bend Spinner baits like he shows. Just use braid to wrap a heavy loop to change that R bend into a closed loop. Then the bait will not bend like he shows. Also braid definitely is way more sensitive and you can feel every limb bump, fall bump, and or when a fish strikes the baits
Before seeing this video I used braid on my crank baits. I skin hooked a lot of fish. Never knew why until I saw this video
Thanks for the tips. I was about to rig a Chatter Bait rod with braid.
braid to flouro. i will say however that with a spinnerbait, i only use titanium wire ones with a closed loop. no issues. i also tend to just use a bendier rod. instead of fast action, i go to medium or mod fast.
Hello !
David Fritts does not use braided line on crankbaits 🤣.
Good tips bro but what does it mean when your ChatterBait is just spiraling and floating to the top when you reel it not thumping at all?
Great info as always, but I Have a question. I have a 7ft 2inch heavy rod, looking to get a 7ft 11inch or 8 ft heavy what's the idea heavy rod leath for all situations?
So what lures do you use braided line with, what lures do you use fluorocarbon line for and mono for?
I like running a mono leader when fishing spooks and poppers too because the stiffer mono doesn’t get caught up behind the bait and in the hooks
I do that too but with fluorocarbon. Many people believe fluorocarbon is not usable for topwater a but it is. You just need a small piece on front of the braid. It’s a really good set up
Would I be fine with braid and a fluoro liter?
I've run braided line since the beginning, but I've always put an FC leader on that's about twice the poundage of the main line. I get that a lot of anglers carry around 3-4 rods every time they go out, but I only bring just one.
So if you only have a 2500 med/fast spinning setup… what’s the overall most versatile setup? 15/lb braid to 8/lb flouro/mono leader?
@@greg6162 I typically use heavier leader. As emphasised in the video braid is a lot stronger than the rated poundage. 15lb test is more closer to 30lb test breakage. I fish mostly UL on a BFS reel. Currently I use 4lb braid on an 8lb flouro leader.
And the fourth bait is Jerkbaits?
I’m starting to fish more and more with fc. Here in Sweden braid has been the go to line for every single angler for many years, but it’s starting to change.
Thanks for the video!
You can use braid for crankbait if you had a good crankbait rod.
Great video! I’ll use the advice this weekend when I go out
Good stuff B-Lat,,, keep em’ Commin’🎣
For those without a bunch of setups that are always running braid- can you get away with a flouro leader and get the same benefits?
So if you only have one rod and already set up for braid to flouro can I just turn down the drag to solve most of these problems?
What are your thoughts on braid to leader?
Hey B Lat , question ❓ Do Hartwell fish get thirsty ❓
What pound test should I get?
I am Darryl, but I am not “Darryl363”….. just clarifying! 🤣
Hey Brian I'm not trying to be a wise ass but I saw a video last year with Dave Fritz and he is useing braid for his crankbait s. He says he started useing braid so he can feel the bait better. But Brian I won't use it I use the fc crankin line by sunline.
Yeah. Notice when he was actually fishing tournaments he never used it.
Where can I buy that exact square bill crank bait? Love the color and size… just started fishing and I don’t have any crank baits yet
Edit: I’m on a Nasci 2500 spinning reel so maybe I need a smaller size or would that work?
I’m a bank fisherman I put straight braid on everything 😂
Thanks for the info brother
Brian is right, but if you've got to fish braid, loosen the drag a little and fish with a rod with more flex. The only time I may use braid for these 3 lures, is if I'm fishing it in a foot or less water. Braid floats, floro sinks.
B Lat... Is Mystery Tackle Box for Bass anglers only, or can they be configured for the fish specific fishermen/fisherwoman? Crappie, Bluegill, etc.?
Okay Darryl, that was phenomenal! Always some comic relief and don't give AF.
Brian what do you think about Yozuri hybrid flouro nylon? I have been using it for my leaders on braid.
Can I use braid with a leader?
I just purchased some of the Illusion Diamond line in 16lb test mono. What is it that you like about this line? Please advise, thanks Henry
Illusion is really good mono. I used this fall fishing around oyster bars and barnacles. It’s much better in those situations than fluorocarbon
I think you miss more fish altogether using braid with baits that require a steady retrieve. Not just because the hooks tear out easier but because the stretch/give of monofilament makes it easier for the fish to take them. You might miss them on a spinnerbait especially when they are striking short
Absolutely!
Man I feel attacked… #BraidedLine4Life
Omg lol 😂🤣
😆😆😆 bruh your name is literally lil Darrel 😂😂😂
@@BrianLatimerFishing he made his account 1hr ago! 🤣
@@BrianLatimerFishing hahaha I just made the account to do this.
do you spool up the whole reel with fluoro or is braid to a fluoro leader alright?
Always on point! Thx!
This is a great topic. Thanks for commenting
Using a more moderate action rod may help
I would say maybe you don’t have enough steady tension to keep them hooked that far out? Maybe try a lighter size rod or a faster action?
Great video! AFish on!
Thanks for the tips!
Only i used braed line for froggs heavy pads iused for top waters lures
David Fritts, one of the greatest crankbait/carolina rig fisherman ever totally disagrees with you. He uses straight braid because he fells the bottom better and gets a better hookup. Their is a tool called a drag on fishing reels and you need to set accordingly.
He didn’t uses braid because he CANT feel anything anymore. During his competitive days he never used braid.
such awesome content blat. keep it going!
That explains alot.. 👍
Great content Brian, thanks. Just for clarification, are you saying to not use braid at all with these 3 or would a 6' leader of flouro counter the negative effects of braid?
I will put a 15' leader... So I don't have to re-tie
Use a mono leader trilene xl 8 to 15 lbs depending, the stretch is your friend and the fish dont see any difference between mono and fluorocarbon its just marketing bs. Mono is more abrasion resistant and better knot strength as well. And wayyy cheaper lol.
@@austinh9389 biggest benefit of flouro? Doesn't get wrecked by sunlight.
I agree with this video. 💯
30lb power pro to 12 lb yozuri flouro hybrid, is GODLY. i run it on all my baitcasters.
You can always upgrade split rings too
