The game's not bad, and it's perfect for beginners. Granted, my first RPG was Final Fantasy IV (and I've been in love with the series ever since), and honestly, this game's music makes up for its "shortcomings" if you can call them that. I've been in love with video game music for as long as I can remember, and more often than not, the music alone tends to get me to play these games.
Mystic Quest's legacy continues today too - the Mario and Luigi series is actually *very* similar in a lot of respects. People've just learned where to put some extra complexity to hit a better balance of accessible and engaging to people who know what they're doing. (Plus the Mario setting lends itself wonderfully to engagingly silly stories, that helps too :P)
I still say this game needs an authentic hd version. Look at some of the things this game implemented, damage graphics for when the enemies started loosing hp you could see them get weaker (Ice Stone Golem comes to mind and the Flamesarus Rex), the ability to use weapons outside of battle (like Legend of Zelda) and it had awesome bgm. 😍😍😍😍
The fact that you encounter this track way over 100 times in the whole game and it NEVER gets boring at any time, speaks for itself. There were so many incredibly good soundtracks made for the SNES games, and this game has one of the best. Like, SO many absolute bangers... This one, the boss fight, dark king fight, lava dome, town music (Foresta / Aquaria / Windia) (most relaxing and beautiful track ever)... I love this game so much, my favorite of my early childhood.
The reason why lots of people don't really like this game a lot is probably because it is too easy. I certainly enjoy this game myself, but I find it more enjoyable if I only save the game on the world map (that is, I never save inside dungeons), choose to give up if I die in a battle, and only open each treasure chest once. That's how I really think the game should have been designed, because this would have made it reasonably challenging. But it's still good the way it was released.
Laurelindo There is an "hardcore" mod which is a little bit hardcore sometimes but really fun and it adds great challenge ("too much" if you don't like dying multiple times because the boss OS you with a crit :p)
It was one of the first videogames I remember playing, and I remember it fondly. The music alone was epic and made it quite worthwile. I don't understand why people love hating on this game so much, because there's nothing wrong with it.
DevilJinKazama People seem to hate on it because they hate how it's named Final Fantasy and "doesn't carry the name well" or something like that. I've read a lot of people say that if it wasn't called Final Fantasy it both wouldn't have sold as well, and wouldn't have gotten the hate it got.
***** Well, it wasn't sold as an FF title here in Europe, and our family loved the game to death. Then again, this was far before I ever knew about Final Fantasy anyway, so it wouldn't have mattered if it had been called FF Mystic Quest.
24 years since I played this game, and I STILL come back to listen to its killer soundtrack. Yes, the game was ridiculously easy, but man, the soundtrack is awesome.
I like this game not because it's incredibly well made with fantastic design values, but because it's a simple, fairly mindless RPG that doesn't require too much thought. If you want mindless fun in RPG form, this is one of the best. The music helps too. =D
One of the best fight themes of all the FF series. Crazy to think this is not from Uematsu-sama!!! He is still the OG, but this game had CRAZY music too!
Reviewing these tracks now, they were ahead of the curve. definitely one of the more rock oriented OSTs...they were some of the most amazing from the SNES era...they hold pretty well today.
I always imagined this battle theme telling the story of the fight...Starting off strong and steady, then at 0:27 a party member gets struck down, 0:39 either the party member is revived or the remaining simply gain renewed vigor and epic battle continues to victory.
For me, personally, 0:27 gives me the vibe of the party stopping to think of their next move as the party leader decides to just go for a final push to bring the enemy down, at 0:39.
Exactly, usually in the game, if the music reaches 0:27 then you haven't finished the battle fast enough and you're getting your ass beat (especially by those pesky sphinxes)
It's crazy, I must've been 4 or 5 when I last played this. I barely remember the game, yet the music still sounds familiar. Thank your for uploading this.
I never had an SNES so I missed out on playing this growing up. This ost is a mofack earworm, especially this battle theme, and the boss fight theme. #letsfuckinggo !!!!
You can call this game out for being super simple but you have to understand, that's the point. It's an entry level game. It's nothing for RPG veterans but for someone new to gaming, it's perfect. Regardless, the music is amazing.
Yeah, I loved this game. I never did get far in it, since I only got to play it a few times long ago, but I would always say that this theme reminded me a lot of how some of the BGM in Mega Man X sounded. Of course, knowing what I know now, there is a lot of SNES soundtracks that use a lot of the same SNES instruments and settings, so, that's kinda just how it is. Still, it's cool; the SNES has a lot of killer music.
This game was my first RPG I ever played and got me into FF6 (III) on the SNES. I remember hating the water temple as a kid, even though I never got to finish this game, it was still a great entry point for RPG players.
Heh, so the game did its job then, it was made for Americans so they would get more in to Final Fantasy, meant to be an introduction because they thought that we didn't understand how the games worked.
I had the same, But it was English and English isn't my own language, so it was more of a guess what stood on the screen for me, haha. I recently started playing it again. And now I can read everything, that makes the game even better. :p
This is it exactly. I played Mystic Quest at a friend's house and had played Link to the Past, but it wasn't quite the same. I was instantly hooked on RPGs and got 3(6) right after it came out and beat that and chrono trigger a dozen times before 7 came out. 6 was an insane story for a kid because it had some very adult themes in it. A magic slave, a fight over the crown, a dead girlfriend, a poisoned family, etc. So amazing.
I still have this game, french version (it came with a big ilustrated manual and it took 1 month to arrive from France to Portugal via regular mail - 20 or 22 years ago). The game was simple but enough for me. The music, the music changed my demands on future OST in games. I remeber starting battles and leave the game alone just to keep hearing the music.
and, since i'm here. Opening theme of Mystic Quest for the game boy. It was a f**king game boy but those musics were in another lvl. The game was awesome too with a great story.
They had to cut out so much to make this OST fit into the game's data storage. They were dedicated to it doing two things: making you like JRPGs, and having a kickass soundtrack. Seriously, most of this game's data is the music. It's a good game. Phoebe can totally bail you out if you're overwhelmed.
Every year I return to this soundtrack, battle theme and boss theme. It brings a tear to my eyes, I played this when I was a kid and from time to time I replay it. Despite the hate that this game gets, I freaking love it.
People hate and say this was made for stupid people. I think it was made for kids. And it worked! This turned so many of us on to JRPGs and I don't think Final Fantasy would be the household name in the US that it is.
Yeessssss!!! Endless replay value, even if it's always the same and it's the easiest "Baby's First RPG." The music, story and fantasy aspects are just too good!
To call this game bad i totally wrong. It's suppose to be a beginner/entry level J-RPG. It is a good story and the game lenght is ok. That the game has a superb soundtrack just helped you get going and on occasionally just let the soundtrack flow to hear the great music. Awesome game, will never forget it!
People seem to hate on this game for not being as deep as other RPGs. But it wasn't supposed to be. It was made to help people get into RPGs. And for me it was a great game. And as has already been said it has one of the best soundtracks ever to grace the SNES
Usually when the battle lasts long enough for the bit at 0:27 to hit in this game, you knew you're getting messed up in it (usually battles in this game lasted 15 to 20 seconds)
This is, and always will be, perhaps my single favorite piece of video game music ever. This. Shit. Kicks. So. Much. Ass. I was six when I heard this, and I haven't stopped thinking about it a day after that. I'm 32. Raw dog opinion. Mystic Quest is the best FF game.
Listening to this brings me back when i was in junior high school to early high school my favorite music from this game thank you for uploading this 10/10
I’ve been searching for this for so long! The melody has been in the back of mind playing at random times lol loved this game so much when I was a child 💓😄 used to beg my cousin to let me play it every chance I could I was hooked
How to beat FF Mystic Quest: 1) Get a turbo controller. 2) Tighten a rubber band around the controller so that it holds A down. 3) Enjoy! Dull game. Great battle theme, though.
That's cool, man. Nothing wrong with liking it, but I personally didn't. At ALL. It was linear, lacked challenge and innovation of any form, and contained a story with the amount of depth you'd expect from the opening pages of an Atari game manual. I understand WHY the game was designed this way, too, but that doesn't excuse it for me. It was a bad decision on Square's part, in a time where they were doing nothing but making RIGHT decisions (which DOES excuse THEM).
I loved this game. For me, it was the first FF I had ever played. My dad got it for me and my siblings sometime after the game and system had been out for a while along with super mario world and some batman game. Before that, only super mario world. It was a whole different experience for me and I remember that I loved the shit out of that game. Maybe its linear and lacked challenge & innovation, but it's a great game to introduce someone into the whole style of FF imo.
So this game was the reason for why my mom banned me from any games when my dad was gone for work on his business trips. One time he was away, I saved over his file and he was furious when he found out. I basically couldn't play games Monday to Friday as a child. This game will forever be a milestone for me.

One of the best soundtrack series of all the Final Fantasy games, especially for its age and being an "Entry-Level RPG", which most critics never notice.
I remember breaking the final boss by going into the starting village and nabbing that cure potion in a jar behind a tree you have to cut down. That cure potion respawns every time you enter the village and once I realized this as a kid I took full advantage of it and maxed out my stock.

I played this game a ton of times, despite it having almost zero replay value, the battle theme was one of those tunes that you never got tired of.
This boss and the bone dungeon themes for me

To this day this song randomly get stuck in my head at least once a week
Nothing like this jam
This game was my first RPG I ever played and got me into FF6 (III) on the SNES. I remember hating the water temple as a kid, even though I never got to finish this game, it was still a great entry point for RPG players.
Heh, so the game did its job then, it was made for Americans so they would get more in to Final Fantasy, meant to be an introduction because they thought that we didn't understand how the games worked.
Well I was 5-6 years old, so yeah.
So amazing.
Oh man the final dungeon is the best. Awesome music and boss and stuff.
The legend come to libe

Hearing this makes me want to replay it. The hate it gets is undeserved - I had a lot of fun playing it.

Every year I return to this soundtrack, battle theme and boss theme. It brings a tear to my eyes, I played this when I was a kid and from time to time I replay it. Despite the hate that this game gets, I freaking love it.

Joel wiping out Giant Blue Jays brought me here
People hate and say this was made for stupid people. I think it was made for kids. And it worked! This turned so many of us on to JRPGs and I don't think Final Fantasy would be the household name in the US that it is.
My childhood :')

SUPLEX THE UNIVERSE
SUPLEX EVERYTHING
This is a nice little game to play through on a lazy weekend.
Yeessssss!!! Endless replay value, even if it's always the same and it's the easiest "Baby's First RPG." The music, story and fantasy aspects are just too good!
I can't be the only one who thinks this makes for an amazing workout song.
Yeesssss so many classic game songs do. Especially Street Fighter 2 of course.
@@gamer6592 I know right? A lot of old game music definitely has a very exciting feel to it.

What more could he suplex?
Of course, when most people think "Suplex" in a (Final Fantasy) game, they think Sabin from FF6, and a certain train he can perform such on. ;)

@@ErickGameplaysN64 help, i cant find where vinny played this game
An underappreciated gem. It is a simple game but so well done.
_CRUNDLEQUEST_
To call this game bad i totally wrong. It's suppose to be a beginner/entry level J-RPG. It is a good story and the game lenght is ok. That the game has a superb soundtrack just helped you get going and on occasionally just let the soundtrack flow to hear the great music.
Awesome game, will never forget it!
It definitely worked for me. And this game also helped me to learn English.
When I was a kid: "what the hell is this? A game for babies!?!"
now: "finally an rpg for the busy adult"
People seem to hate on this game for not being as deep as other RPGs. But it wasn't supposed to be. It was made to help people get into RPGs. And for me it was a great game. And as has already been said it has one of the best soundtracks ever to grace the SNES

suplex moment
This jam made grinding a blast
Usually when the battle lasts long enough for the bit at 0:27 to hit in this game, you knew you're getting messed up in it (usually battles in this game lasted 15 to 20 seconds)

May 2024: still one of the best JRPG battle theme ever, if not the best
Would of never thought of this being a final fantasy music but this ost rocks!

Suplex.
Battle Theme, Boss Battle, and the Dark King's Theme are some of the best RPG music out there.

So it's Christmas day 2023. My wife got me this cart, and I'm currently rocking out to this while cleaning contacts.
I remember plaything this when I was like... 6 or 7? This is what got me into RPGs, and I'll never say it was bad.
Sword go: qwish quish!
Brownie go: brruuuuuwwww

How to beat FF Mystic Quest:
1) Get a turbo controller.
2) Tighten a rubber band around the controller so that it holds A down.
3) Enjoy!
Dull game. Great battle theme, though.
this game was awesome! it is in 2nd place rpg with my first being kingdom hearts.
Point taken you are right. I just, hey wait second place? I meant to say 5th! FF7 number 2. FFV or II number 3. And FF VI III number 4.
I just decided to name the games both ways XD
Haha really? your dad played this game?
@@totalwartimelapses6359 Oh yeah! He is the one that got me into Zelda and Mario as a kid. I think he was a part of the wave of people that realized games were not just for geeks.

Enemy is standing upright, face looks menacing and badass
(Axe waves across the screen)
Enemy looks like hes having back issues to the side, face is angry
(Axe waves across the screen)
Enemy looks like he's completely embracing the floor, face sad, missing body parts
One of the best soundtrack series of all the Final Fantasy games, especially for its age and being an "Entry-Level RPG", which most critics never notice.

this music and the lufia stuff. underrated games, underrated ost's
I remember breaking the final boss by going into the starting village and nabbing that cure potion in a jar behind a tree you have to cut down. That cure potion respawns every time you enter the village and once I realized this as a kid I took full advantage of it and maxed out my stock.
