I am still recovering from the greatest moment in Haikyuu history, but we have to keep moving through this epic match! You know where I stand on the individual vs team discussion, but this episode highlights the differences so well, in my opinion.

(I do also love Oikawa in glasses but Iwa in a jean jacket changed me as a person)

An interesting thing about Shirabu (Shiratorizawa's setter) is that he did what Kageyama wasn't able to do. He got to Shiratorizawa on academic merit only, got on the volleyball team, and by his second year he's a starting setter. On sheer determination. You got to give some props to him for that.
Yeah, the thing that many don't realize about Shiratorizawa is that most of their players are likely academic geniuses (I highly doubt people like Tendou got there through a sport invitation since there was a scene where the coach even disputed his position on the team).
Exactly and dislodged a more talented and older more experienced setter in Semi. I feel like the Shiratorizawa supporting cast other than Ushiwaka and Tendo don't get enough love

@@SarahPavanVolleyball the way I see this reaction from Ushijima is in line with what is said here. I think Ushijima is this typical professional who started volleyball early and was always used to a high level of skill, and while he is straightforward, he doesn't exactly ace emotional intelligence, or understand Hinata's position very well, as a kid who started the sport late and is at a disadvatage with his height, but is still determined to reach a top level.
So - I think he is on the one hand disappointed (cause he geniunely expected good skill and good competition out of him and seemed a bit wxcited to have found a talented player), and sincerely does not understand where his confidence comes from. I think it's also a pessimistic view for the immediate future - as in, what do you expect to do at nationals if you don't have the level of skill that everyone there has?
For us, the viewers, we know what Ushijima is missing - this is Hinata's insane determination and ability to grow explosively when he puts focus on certain skills, and his ability to do his best at tense moments. All of this is missed on Ushijima at this stage, and what he doesn't get irritates him a bit, cause it also seems to question his simple philosophy of the sport (to do well, you need to have a certain level of skill for each player in the team)
This is why I love Sarah's reactions. Most Haikyuu reactors I've seen don't understand or give much notice to Shirabu's plight about his "mistake". They're usually "Oh that's old school coaching" or "It happens" and than move on. But with Sarah having seen it with her own eyes knows exactly how that feels like. It's rather refreshing.
There's actually a story about Oikawa getting those glasses: he was at some store, thinking about Seijou's loss to Karasuno and how it's not the end for him or anything, ended up accidentally thanking 2 girls whose conversation he accidentally eavesdropped on for helping him realize it, and then pretended to mistake them for staff by taking those glasses x) That's when he also decided to go watch this game after all

@@SarahPavanVolleyball there’s a series of light novels based on Haikyuu! It’s written by a different person, but it’s still an official spin-off, and Haikyuu’s author drew illustrations for it regularly! They often describe “missing scenes” or just characters’ daily lives. Sadly there’s no official English translations for those novels so far.

What I really love about this series is even with the questionable (borderline unrealistic plays) there is almost always a follow-up to ground it back into reality. Most sports anime devolve to fantasy-like moves that are purely impossible LOL! I'm glad you called it out though, because even as a non-player the first time I saw that I asked "Is there really enough time to do that????"
Yeah afterward when Ukai told him to jump laterally and have the outside blockers support him, that made WAAAAAAAY more sense. I was concerned there for a second, but it was adjusted haha.
In that play it was a high toss. Hinata didn't run back. He only takes a few steps away from the net. His jump at the net was a blockstep approach where he jumps near his highest. You can see similar moves in basketball where players run at the hoop but jump straight up and down. It's also the jump technique he eventually figures out in season 4. Here he just intuits the jump. The only thing fake about this scene is how many steps he takes towards the net which is most likely for dramatic effect.
as an Iranian VB fan, im not being a dick, i just want to dispel this idea: Haikyuu sets and plays are not unrealistic or that far fetched. yes, the slomo and the perceived length and width of the court make the plays seem unrealistic. but VB is maybe one of 3 sports in reality that the irl version is x9000 more batshit than anything else ever depicted.
Japan's Nishida is the literal Ushiwaka and he's even more impressive than Ushiwaka.
Iran's Marouf and Brazil's Rezende are considered even more crafty than Kageyama and Oikawa combined. along w Argentina's De Cecco, these setters do 200-400 IQ sets.
there's a set by De Cecco btwn Serbia vs Argentina 2022, where he digs the ball from the audience and sets it across for a spike. almost what Oikawa did for Iwaizumi, only far deeper in the audience. it was beautiful.
I've actually watched highschool games from Japan from early 2000 where they played sophisticated plays like the ones we see here.
even Hawaii has a much more impressive highschool level VB than, say, most of the US' highschool VB zeitgeist.
countries like Japan used to not be v good at height games. they made a point to become competitive and it took em ~20 years to get where they are.
highschool VB games in Iran are as competitive and as insane as regular FIVB and since we have to play Asia for both FIFA and FIVB qualifiers, we always play Japan to qualify.
if you feel inclined watch irl rallies. you'll appreciate how actually underwhelming Haikyuu is compared to irl real-time matches.
I saw Iran vs Poland and Iran vs Russia in FIVB 2019 in Chicago. seeing Marouf contort his body with an ease of giving a hi5 was surreal. i needed a tranquilizer after those matches.

Also, I'm really glad you acknowledged what is honestly probably Hinata's single biggest strength. It's not the freak quick; it's the fact that he literally works harder than anyone else on the court, every single time. It's been a while since they really highlighted it, so it gets easy to take it for granted, but his stamina, effort, and dedication are way more integral to his value as a player than his jumping ability or skill. And Suga was right; there's no need to worry about Ushiwaka's comments getting to him by this point. By now, if he were the type to let comments like that get him down, he wouldn't be here.

@@SarahPavanVolleyball Oh you're not wrong at all; it was just super funny 😂 I personally prefer his normal look, but I think it actually has more to do with the outfit than the glasses. The white and green jersey just works really well with him. I'd say the same for Iwaizumi here as well; I prefer his on-court look to this one.
I also really like having them there watching and hearing their comments and conversation throughout this match. This season, combined with the extra stuff with Seijoh post-season 2, is where I felt like I fully understood Oikawa as a person and actually started to like the character. I still don't like how he stubbornly holds on to that childish grudge with Kageyama, but he really is a great guy toward basically everyone but Kageyama, Ushijima, and Hinata (to a pretty significantly lesser degree). And damn does he know his volleyball.

I was wondering what your take will be on Shirabu, the shiratorizawa setter. Not wanting to control everything - interesting attitude isn't it? Does any setter at the pro level have this kind of attitude? also shout out to Oikawa and Iwa for coming to match, passion for the sport and competitive spirit!!!
All the strategies that go into this game, especially with Hinata's blocking this episode, I am always amazed at Furudate sensei, how is he able to create this deeply character driven story but at the same time design the game/points in such a way that it's a gradual improvement in the level of game, in the techniques shown by different players of different levels, yet keeping true to the sport and not overwhelming the audience, especially the non volleyball audience. He is a great author!!
It's actually incredible. The ability to weave in such intricate character development with nuanced aspects of the sport (while making even non-volleyball players understand) just blows my mind.

1:25 I can assure you, as someone who has watched a good half a dozen reactors watching haikyuu, the emotions do indeed not fade. in fact, *because* I know it's coming, I feel it gets even more intense
I think that Shirabu’s backstory is trying to highlight that he gained this mentality as setter because he admires and sees Oikawa an ideal setter. His team couldn’t rival with Oikawa’s well-orchestrated team. But getting to see that the sheer strength of Ushijima could win over Oikawa was what made him aspire to be a “supporting” setter for such strong individuals in Shiratorizawa.

I think the interesting thing with Shirabu's mentality is that while you said it wouldn't be the attitude that you would want in your setter, if you look at the kind of team that the Shiratorizawa coach, Washijo-sensei, likes to build, Shirabu is actually an excellent fit. He may not be the right fit for any other team, and definitely wouldn't be the right setter for Karasuno or Seijoh, but he fits the Shiratorizawa system and mentality absolutely perfectly.
Yeah, I think there's borderline enough evidence to suggest Semi is a more talented player overall, I think he's also taller than Shirabu so would he would strengthen their blocking and of course having a strong server is always a plus. Despite all of those things Washijo decided to have Shirabu as the starting setter which just goes to show he's just the perfect fit for the team's playstyle at the moment.
I think an argument could have been made for Semi if Leon was stronger offensively or if they had another outside hitter with more offensive power.

@@ancapatrascu1545 yeah I just was talking specifically about the second outside hitter spot that Leon takes up. He's more of a Daichi (with better offense) if you want to compare it to Karasuno.
I do really appreciate how Haikyuu appreciates how much teammates affect each-other. I've definitely been on teams where some teammates would make condescending remarks doing games and it is sad, because they were just making the team worse. Haikyuu showing that this can also be applied in the opposite direction is very encouraging.
This season of Haikyuu is not only peak anime, is peak sports tv. If you're feeling goosebumps right now, all I can say is that you're in for a T R E A T.
The episode title doesn't specifically say that it's Karasuno vs Ushijima. Shiratorizawa is a team of strong individuals, while Karasuno is a team that mostly relies on combinations and teamwork.
Yeah it was just my prediction and feeling of where the episode would go.
Thank you Sarah for explaining Karasuno's strategy of aiming their serves at Reon to restrict him; even after reading/watching this arc of Haikyuu so many times, as a non-volleyball player, I never really understood why they did so, just accepted it. This is why I love watching your reactions. Not only do you immerse in the story and in each and every character's backstory and development, but you also take the time to explain volleyball concepts and strategies to us

I enjoy your breakdowns, and useful info on volleyball. But you getting invested into the characters growth and enjoying THE OTHER TEAMS backstory. While Tsukki's moment from last episode is probably still my favourite part of the series completely (Despite having read and finished the manga too) there are definitely some moments in the next season that are just as impactful.
The stage play (sort of like a theater performance) of Karasuno vs Shiratorizawa was as incredible as the anime! It's so epic especially the opening, the character introductions, and the ending.

I love when Ohira tells Goshiki those encouraging words; I know that when I played, team encouragement went a long way to building my confidence (especially at that time in my life, when I had very little confidence in myself to begin with).
The haiku in Haikyuu! will never cease to be my favorite of Furudate-sensei's uses of wordplay. I'm so impressed with how they seamlessly weave in literary humor into a story about sports. As someone who loves sports in general and is a former literature student and former volleyball player, it makes me feel seen as a reader. Even among my scholar peers, there's this air of "sports aren't much," and I really dislike it immensely, and Haikyuu! as both literary and visual text is proof that you can love both and live in both worlds.

That was a great show of Hinata being number one decoy, and also Tendou almost guessed it wont be Hinata hitting but Tanaka instead. Kageyama's "dont you dare get worn out now" was also pretty damn epic, and it made me tear up.
Hinata’s jump, passion and positive thinking are great. But the most scariest thing of Hinata is his stamina. Basically he has endless stamina. He’s surely a monster.
Ushijima is straightforward. Haha, like Iwaizumi and Oikawa in season 2 where they were frustrated that Ushijima is right about only one team going to national and it pisses them off. Or when Hayato (Shiratorizawa's libero) pointed out Ushijima was being genuine after Goshiki challenged him and all he replied was "Do your best." In that flat tone of his...does cause people to misinterpret or be mad about how blunt he is because how would anyone reply to straight facts?

Btw, the whole "Ushiwaka" nickname is because of a famous samurai (Ushiwakamaru) known for a certain legend in which he jumped from boat to boat on a battle. Ushiwaka is strong and has high jumps (so it matches those aspects)

I loved your reaction to this episode of Haikyuu I loved how you called out Hinata's one block. Do you remember when I told you that angry Suga makes more than appearance. Well what did you think of his little moment in this episode.

I think, in some ways, Ushijima sees Hinata as an opposite. Shiratorizawa's team is built around him because he is the focal point of their power and what their main game plan revolves around while, in his mind, Karasuno is built around covering Hinata's weaknesses.

I think Shiratorizawa is a really interesting example of how teamwork can manifest in may different ways. When we're told about Shiratorizawa and we hear about their simple 'addition' of strong players and their reliance on Ushiwaka, we assume this will be a one man team who wins even without strong teamwork or bonds between players, but that's actually not at all what we get.
In Volleyball, no matter how good the spikers are, they can't spike without a receive, and their spikes are limited by the quality of their set. It's not really possible for a team to be good because of their Ace alone, even if it can look that way on the surface.
When Shirabu is talking about 'power volleyball', he's more referring to overwhelming an opponent head to head rather than going around as a setter, if that comparison makes sense? Kageyama can set well enough to give his spikers incredible power, but his greatest talent is his ability to set anyone from anywhere; a talent that literally carries Karasuno through every match.
However, this not only puts a huge amount of strain on Kageyama, it also makes his setting unpredictable for both his enemies AND his allies. Rather than simply set for Asahi when in a pinch, Kageyama is much more likely to try a trick play using Hinata or his right side, or even go for a dump. That's not to say he DOESN'T use Asahi that way, just that it wouldn't be his first instinct; Kageyama is a super agressive setter who believes (quite rightly) in his own ability to tear apart blocks with incredible combination attacks.
Shirabu is equally assertive, but in that he will always ALWAYS let his hitters do the shining, not him. He won't force everyone to jump as decoys, won't set up trick plays in a pinch. He'll simply give Ushiwaka the best possible set and watch him obliterate the opponent NO MATTER WHAT they stack up against him: overwhelming them head to head, see?
On the surface that sounds almost cowardly, but part of being a team player is understanding the needs of your teammates. This strategy would be fatal for Karasuno, but relying on trick plays would be fatal for Shiratorizawa. The two teams are very different but both are made of players leaning on each other to get stronger, just in different ways.
It's quite a poetic and mindful mentality to accept your lack of control over a situation. At the end of the day, you can only do your best and see what the outcome is; if it's a success, then great! If it's failure, you at least know you did your best at that moment, and you can analyse what can make your best 'better' at your leisure.
The way you put this into words is excellent.
I always wondered what Shiratorizawa would look like if they used a more creative setter. I mean- it's not like Shirabu has no aces up his sleeve at all, we see him dump or even do that time lag middle attack with Tendo.
But honestly, i feel like a creative setter added to this mix, but with ample emotional intelligence to know when to rely on the classical moves more, would bring Shiratorizawa to a whole new level. Probably someone like Oikawa or Akaashi would make them even better - but of course setters with that skill don't grow on trees.
I kind of think that this is the moral of them losing with Karasuno - they had been used to win everything with this straightforward and simple type of play, but they got complacent without realising. I think what the match with Karasuna shows is that, at least this year, that style of play is no longer sufficient to make it big.

Another reactor I watched called Keishin a trash coach compared to his grandfather and instantly wanted Gramps on the court as the coach instead. For some reason I felt attacked lol. Thanks for pointing out what a great adjustment Ukai made, he's doing a fantastic job in his first year of coaching.
Whoever call Keishin trash never understands the point of the story or of his character at all.
I think I know who are you talking about. They piss me off, saying stuff like thatwhile not understanding the situation fully.
i watched that reactor too...i was like "come on" be karasuno's coach let's see if you can do better than Ukai
So rather than react emotionally, I want to actually weigh out the evidence and work on this.
The question it brings up is: Would Ikkei be a better coach to our current Karasuno team than Keishin? This reactor seemed to believe that if Ikkei immediately swapped places with Keishin during the Shiratorizawa match he would have some magic advice that would give Karasuno an edge.
The arguments that were made were:
1) Keishin wasn't a particularly special setter in highschool, and this is his first year as a coach.
2) Keishin didn't know how to help Hinata at the beginning of season 2 so he went to Ikkei to help him. Hinata got better under one on one training with Ikkei.
3) They mistakenly seemed to think that under Ikkei, Karasuno won at nationals.
4) They mistakenly seemed to think Keishin's coaching style is to say "Just be aggressive".
This tells me that the finer strategic points of what Keishin says is not fully understood by them. Makes sense, since they don't play volleyball afaik, and don't understand the game at the level of Sarah or Coach Donny. They have a tendency to pay more attention to how adorable everyone is. (Well, they're not wrong about that lol.)
I would counter with the claim that Gramps doesn't know what our team has been practicing and each players individual strengths and skills. He wouldn't know which plays they had been working on for this match.
My rebuttal for 1) is the fact that good players don't necessarily make good coaches.
2)'s rebuttal would be that the way Ikkei coaches his casual classes is very different from the brutal uncompassionate way he coached highschool volleyball. He doesn't have time to spoon-feed basics to each player like he did for Hinata. Yamaguchi wouldn't stand a chance under him. Tsukishima would have left because the training would be too brutal for "just a club".
3)'s rebuttal is that Karasuno lost nationals in the 3rd round that year with the Little Giant.
4)'s rebuttal would have to be all the tactical coaching that Keishin does, like what Sarah mentioned about his adjustment of the receivers.
I think the steps are a few more than normal for Hinatas block but just a couple extra steps works really well for verticality in basketball when going for a block. If you jumped like a block for volleyball you got dunked on mostly so its not completely unrealistic besides the time you have to physically do it

I don't know how this show is so good at setting up play after play. You really feel the momentum building and stopping and the fight from each side. And they animate them getting more and more exhausted.

Actually, I think we can pretty much say for sure that there was nothing more to Ushijima's remark to Hinata, simply because Ushijima doesn't have a brain for mind games. My boy takes even jokes literally, there is no space in his brain to think about mind games :D
I love how the manga skimmed through the third set in like 3 pages or so, showing that if this was a best-of-3 match, Karasuno would be destroyed.
Also, fun little fact about Shirabu - he's the only one on the team who is at Shiratorizawa on an academic scholarship. The rest has sports scholarships.

As a football fan, the team that I would compare Shiratorizawa to is the Alabama Crimson Tide in college football. Everything from their coaching philosophy, playing style, and their tradition of winning; the similarities are there.
That concept about Karasuno overloading the left side to defend against Ushijima was super interesting, it's crazy how much you can infer about each team's strategy just based off the flow of the match, really makes me like volleyball more and more.

9:56 Actually, Ushiwaka definitely DID NOT say that to get into Hinata's head. In fact, he didn't need to. As you already know Ushiwaka is very blunt. He doesn't say things to brag. He doesn't shit talk and won't try to get into the opponent's head. Only people who aren't confident in their own skills would play games like getting into opponents' head. Ushiwaka is not that type of person or player.
The reason Ushiwaka said that is that he was very disappointed in Hinata. It's like he said, after the move Hinata put on him when they first met, he EXPECTED Hinata to be good at blocking and receiving, due to his dexterity. So Ushiwaka REALLY was looking forward to playing against Hinata. However, after seeing how "clumsy" Hinata was as a volleyball player, Ushiwaka was disappointed. He expressed DISAPPOINTMENT. Actually disappointment.

I feel like Ushijima told hinata that he sucks because he was disappointed on him. The first time they faced each other Hinata just jumped higher than him and stole the ball from him. I think he was expecting Hinata to be a powerhouse like him and was left unimpressed when he saw how clumsy hinata is
4:32 I'm japanese and I think its really rare to get hit by coaches etc now days in Japan but maybe in areas like Miyagi, where they're from (Shiratorizawa, Karasuno etc) would be a bit more common than it is in Tokyo if that even makes sense

To me watching this match, Shiratorizawa plays like a modern men's team. They're all about nice open sets to the outside hitters with the occasional quick or pipe to shake things up, and let the big outsides smash the ball for kills. They are a power team. Karasuno plays more like a modern women's team. They use slide hits, multiple attackers, angles, etc. to score. They are more of a finesse team.
