    Im from Scotland. I've spent 7 years in Mexico, living in CDMX and Cuernavaca, driving 35000km across it, visiting chihuahua, sinaloa, guanajuato, queretaro, jalisco, puebla, guerrero, Oaxaca, tabasco, campeche, chiapas, yucatan, QRoo.
    Incidents 1: a fine by police in Guerrero for wheels crossing centre line with my license Sent to Mexico City and a small fine
    Robberies/crimes against me: 0
    Driving incidents : 0
    Extortions: 0
    Cartel run ins: 1 in Guanajuato a guy questioned me about photos I was taking of a mariachi band in a restaurant as it also captured his friends. Seemed less concerned when he asked for ID and I was Scottish. Took my number plate outside when I left but nothing happened. Mexican friends told me he's likely cartels
    Trips with no incidents : 50+
    point is, I feel completely safe in Mexico as in 7 years very little has happened.
    I do drive at night if I fly into Mexico City and need to get home. Again, nothing happened.

      In light of the the tourists found dead in Baja being afraid is normal and warranted. But, in 2014 I was planning a trip to Mexico and Mexican people in my neighborhood in LA told me not to go because it isn't even safe. Even one guy I worked with told me he never goes back to Mexico because it isn't safe,

      Or travel to where you don't feel afraid of everything. You don't have to weight fearing for your personal safety everywhere you travel to. You should always follow simple safety rules (since crime happens everywhere), but there are plenty of travel destinations that don't cause this level of fear or safety concerns.

    This is really interesting watching this as someone who is half Mexican and lived in Mexico for 3.5 years, there’s definitely a lot of fear towards Mexico, but so many people live there and don’t have any issues. It’s similar to the US, there’s definitely places that are worse than others. The difference is the cops aren’t as responsive in Mexico and people take advantage of the tourists. I live in Baltimore now, and it’s definitely worse here in terms of crime and safety. Regardless of where you travel, it’s super important to stay safe and know your surroundings.

    • @BasicallyNomads

    • @yakemon
      @yakemon Рік тому +7

      I think it's a little different though. We're more accustomed to the culture and language in the US so we know when we're in a bad situation. Mexico is foreign to most Americans so I think it's harder to tell what kind of situation we're in.

    • @BasicallyNomads
      @BasicallyNomads  Рік тому +4

      @@yakemon totally agree with that. My advice would be to actually talk to a local and find out the dos and donts. That’s what we did, but it was after we accepted money from someone we shouldn’t have. Luckily, it turned out fine, but could have been a mistake we ended up regretting..

      Charm city is no Charm in my book but having worked and lived in off and on for over 30 years I can say I other than when doing an upgrade to a cell site in Cherry Hill when some Meth head tried to break into my truck which luck for me was parked right next to the cell site on the roof 5 stories up so a quick sprint down the steps while my partner was yelling at the dirt bag to keep him occupied until I made downstairs with a ball peen hammer to convince him that it wasn’t a good idea. That said in the past few years the Charm city has taken a definite turn for the worse in many areas thanks to the lack of prosecution by the city’s district attorney

    Fly into Mexico for almost nothing, take the bus around for almost nothing, fly home for almost nothing.....that's how to see Mexico. Bring a laptop and your phone and whatever electronic accessories you need. That's it for valuables. Now almost nobody is interested in you. And show NO wealth. Never bring your phone out in public. Rather use a super cheap old phone in public if you have to bring it up. Dress VERY casual, no watch, no jewelry, no designer clothes, no "nice" anything. Go it? Enjoy your trip and learn Spanish and meet lots of Mexicans. It's a fabulous culture, a fabulous country.

    The "Texan" with the white truck really exemplifies the saying "no good deed goes unpunished".
    If i'm traveling i'm not helping anyone with money, picking up hitchhikers, helping someone broke down on the side of the road or going out of my way to do something for someone.
    Bad guys prey on the naive and good natured types that are willing to lend a hand, if I see someone broken down or walking somewhere far I let the Police know where they are, the direction they're traveling and what the scenario is.

    I saw you guys roll through La Paz. I was just at Tecolote beach today, myself. Got stuck in the sand there a few years ago too. Cartels are not much of a thing in Baja. I'm sure they are everywhere in Mexico but with just the one highway running down and seven military checkpoints (when they are all open), they don't thrive here like they do on mainland. Glad you have some good experiences.

    1. It's either him alone or just 2 of them.. cartels travel in packs. The smallest would be a 3 man group.
    2. They don't make gestures that their packing, they show off the guns straight from the start.
    3. They don't ask or try to negotiate, they just take at gun point period.
    4. Their trucks are always 4x4.

    The first rule is don't bring much to attract theft. Like an RV. You are ALWAYS at fault if you have an accident in Mexico. So smart people don't drive. They get a driver or a taxi/Uber/bus. The smartest way to live is to get a bilingual assistant that drives their own car and smooths out local problems for you.

    Our experience was 100% safe and good. Great people and great food. Still lots of poverty but Americans are very welcome and I hope more people will venture all around the area. Mexico just isn't a good place to visit, before the cartels and gangs sure but not anymore, I can't even count how many times i've seen travelers get threatened by Mexican Police with prison for having cannabis when it's legal in Mexico and then get extorted by the Police.
    I've seen even local Mexicans get stopped by cartel and had to pay $700 USD to pass by their blockade.
    My next door neighbor is the mother of one of the students that went to Cancun after graduating at UT, a large group of students from UT decided to celebrate their graduation with a vacation in Cancun, some of them heard about another party from locals and went with them and got tortured to death, one of the men that died is named Mark Kilroy, I remember hearing this story in graphic detail from my neighbor.
    Not even a month ago Police found 8 dismembered bodies in a taxi used by the cartel, one of them was confirmed to be an American woman that was allegedly arguing with a drug dealer in a beach resort night club in Tulum.
    I have no idea why people have a desire to visit the murder capitol of the world, the beaches aren't worth the risk, i'll fly to Hawaii or Greece instead.

    You need to go to a Mexican Embassy or consulate in the USA first. There at the embassy get some travel information and some business cards from a Mexican official, when stopped by crooked Mexican cop's mention that you went to a Mexican consulate and have a card from so and so, that he told you shouldn't have any problems travelling in Mexico. The mention of the Mexican consulate will scare off the offending cop because they fear the Mexican Governments reprisal, the government wants tourists. It happened to me, unknowingly, I did go to a consulate because I was going to take a travel trailer and a minibike over the border. at the border crossing I was being told that the lawn mower engine powered minibike needed a license, insurance, a tag, we were going round and round arguing about it. I without thinking said, Hey I went to the consulate, and they told me I would be fine with what I was travelling with, and you are telling me I am not! He turned around went into an office came back quick and said Esta bien bye. This won't work with criminals

    You lied to us. Nowhere in this video did I see or hear "GIVE US YOUR VEHICLE". And nowhere in this video did the actual Cartel show up. Even your thumbnail picture is a blatant lie. A guy offering to buy a vehicle is certainly not the Cartel -they take things..not pay for them. The only thing you did here was create misleading content and I and others who recognize this will thumb you down, report you, and never come back. I could have been watching an honest and educational video about Mexico..but instead wasted my time with this garbage. I have reported you to UA-cam for MISLEADING THUMBNAIL and MISLEADING TEXT.

      @@BasicallyNomads still misleading thumbnail and text, i watched all the video tbh i knew since the beginning that this would be one of those videos showing Mexico like the most dangerous country n shit, the cartel never showed up, they never took your vehicle and tbh you were lucky with that, driving in a group of 10 RV's, its like going to detroit with clothes made of money yk?, even tho you would not get stopped by the cartel and now that im rethinking, probably nobody would make you stop, the only rule you need to know to stay safe in mexico is mind your own bussiness, dont do, sell or distribute drugs because then the cartel will probably stick an eye to you thinking that you are from a rival cartel and thats the only way you will get kidnapped, killed or tortured in Mexico
