How do I figure out where is the correct pitch without "fishing"? Everybody teaches to "just put your fingers to correct positions like a hammer", but why would I play scales if I could do that? :)
Excellent question, Vlad!
It's kind of like asking: "How do I spell the word [insert word]"? and someone's reply is: "Look it up in the dictionary..." ... "But how do I look it up in the dictionary if I can't spell it!?" 😅
The answer is:
1. Train your ear to find the accurate pitch: definitely move and adjust your finger until you are happy with the pitch. (Yes, this will be a "fishing" process). Do this while carefully observing what it feels like in your hand after you are satisfied with the pitch that's perfectly in tune and resonating in your instrument.
2. Then go back a few notes in the passage and attempt to play the note in context again. The goal is to train yourself to play the passage and pitch accurately in context and on the "first try".
3. If you catch yourself still playing the pitch inaccurately and "fishing" for the correct pitch in your next play-through, then repeat steps 1 and 2.
Hope that helps!
