TheGlove in theClutch on Jordan with a game winning steal...highlights like that are rarely seen against MJ & that's a testament to GP's greatness as a fearless 1on1 defender, in every clutch situation he's ever been in on D he always guarded the go-to guy
Agreed. I seen Payton play live in 2000 Olympics, versus Australian team. They had a breakaway layup in transition, and Gary SPRINTED from halfcourt covering SO MUCH GROUND to catch up to the PG on the open fast break, and just as the PG went to lay the ball up, Payton STRIPPED the SHIT out of him! The PG was astonished and layed up AIR, as Gary had swiped the ball clean out of his hands from behind. At that moment, I realized how FUCKING BRILLIANT Payton really is! Had privilege's to see Payton, Kidd and Vince Carter play. Up close and personal, the DEFENSE of Payton is something else. From the front row, it makes me realize how HARD it is to play against these guys. (Now I know why scouts helped Sonics draft Payton as 2nd Pick, primarily for DEFENSE. This guy Gary is a SUPERSTAR!)
There was no MJ in the way in 94 when Seattle was the overall #1 seed with the best record in the league and the chip was there on a platter waiting for them. That was their best chance and the year they should’ve done it but we all know what happened. For some reason they couldn’t get out of their own way in the playoffs those 2 years where MJ wasn’t a factor and then they finally get it together just in time for him to be back with a vengeance and formed the most unbeatable team in nba history. Ugh.. great timing Sonics

nba 90s are the greatest as were the players. I remember this series and Gary gave MJ a run for his money. From 95-2000 the glove was the best defender imo.
A rare loss in that 72-10 season for the Bulls. There is no Dennis, i guess he was suspended. He ofc was the key to the finals, after Gary started hounding Michael into 6-19 shooting performances. Too bad that the Sonics lost mcMillan to injury and went down 0-3 before GP, his ankle also hurt, stepped up and DEMANDED to guard Mike, after which they nearly tied up the series. It would be unrealistic to expect a team with MJ to lose a 3-0 lead, but still..... No matter how great Mike is and how watered down the competition was in the 90s compared to the 80s, i think a 4/6 finals would be a more realistic outcome, had the Suns not taken an equally slow start to their 1993 series and had Utah closed out some of the damn games in their b2b finals. MJ couldnt guard GP. It just is what it is.
So who was guarding MJ?... Because lifetime vs the Sonics wit GP on the team he has a career 32ppg average.
It was the reason of Sonics` 2 wins in those finals.
MJ got old at 34. If he was even 3 yrs younger here, he would've rapped the glove defensively.
