I preferred the Huss and picked I out almost every time. I'm a big Martin fan, but gotta give credit where it's due
I’m on the exact same page as you. I love Martins and did have a D28 myself for a while, but the Huss & D was just more pleasing every single time.
You took the words out of my mouth. The H&D has a sweeter, rounder sound to it. Both are very good of course, but they're different enough that it's not that hard to tell them apart.
Great video Jeremy! I was able to pick the correlating guitar every time. The D28 has a distinct character that makes it pretty easy to pick. Fingerpicking is much harder as your fingers are filtering out the highs, warming up the tone, giving you a much narrow frequency range to pick from in this situation at least. If I had to go with one, tone wise I think I lean toward the Huss & Dalton, it seemed to be a little smoother but really they both sounded fantastic. Vintage instruments are cool but these days Martin Authentic VTS and the Martin copy cats, aka H&D and Bourgeois, are killing it.
What this video confirmed for me is that mahogany is THE back and sides preference for me. My new D18 blows my other Martins away. The Huss and Dalton in your video has such a sweet, balanced, warm and articulate sound.
I really thought I was going to favor the Martin too! But, I love that deep mahogany sound! I recently bought a Recording King Series 11 Dreadnought. I love it! I love the punch of the spruce top combining with the rich deep mahogany sound. I also love all mahogany guitars. 🙂

This was really tough for me. I think I preferred the Martin just a tad, but the H&D sound better picked out. I just found a used 2020 HD-28E with the LR Baggs for a steal. Used some of the guitar hunting skills you've taught. Having cash on hand and recognizing a deal when it slaps you in the face was a big part. This is my first really nice guitar and boy am I excited. It gets here on Wednesday. Happy Newyear. Thanks for all the great content.
They both sound great. I find myself leaning towards a little more midrange punch, and the mahogany of the H&S seemed to give it that. But still, depending on which piece you were playing, it was tough to tell over my iPhone speakers haha. I’m about to get a Hog D style guitar. The more I hear mahogany, the more I’m loving it. Great video!
Try it with some headphones or Bluetooth speaker and it'll sound more pronounced.
I'm a huge Martin fan (and owner), but wow! The Huss sounded amazing! I was totally surprised. Only got 50% correct!
That Martin sounds way better! I wanted to say the opposite before I watched this...
i guessed all of them correct except the fingerstyle section. The dead giveaway was the the treble chime on the newer huss and dalton and the lack of woodiness in the base.
Step 4 & 5 I was able to answer correctly with no doubts. But the rest of the steps... very hard to tell. Great video!!!! Def. went in as a Martin fan, but this really changed my mind. Thank you
I got it right. For some reason, High end guitars always sound mid scooped. For example, the bass and treble are more pronounced. I like both but prolly prefer the martin because the sound is more prevalent on all radio and sound recordings. In other words, my mind wants to automatically pick martin.
The Martin sounded more balanced across all frequencies in my opinion. That comes with age. The mid range you hear in the H&D is more than likely forward shifted & or scalloped braces. The Martin's bracing is rear shifted & untrimmed. Two great guitars either way!!!!!!!
I preferred the Martin greatly every single take.
Its simple the Martin was a much warmer/rich sounding. The H/D was brighter and a little edgy. It really depends the sounds that you want.
Jeremy No offense, but I'm glad to see you having a conundrum about selling that Martin. I've picked out that Martin every time with exception of the fingerpicked section. The Martin has separation & clarity whereas the H&D is a bit muddy & some notes even get lost at times. Brazilian is a brighter sounding wood. Indian is the tonewood with the deeper bass, but as you know, the brace work is what really makes a difference!!!!!!! It's a major difference between these two guitars. The Martin has the stock, untrimmed, rear shifted bracing whereas the H&D likely has scalloped, forward shifted bracing. You can hear it in the mid range of the H&D, but I have to say that I can 100% see why you like that guitar so well. It's a great guitar in it's own right & the fact that it compares so well to the Martin, is a testament of it's quality!!!!!!!
I get that some ppl like one tone wood over another, but you should never completely write one off until you've tried all the available bracing combinations with that tone wood. You never know what you could be missing. Good luck & great acoustic endeavors to everyone out there!!!!!!!

Man I am blown away. I ended up choosing the Huss and Dalton almost every time. And I am a huge vintage Martin fan.
I loved them both but the Huss and Dalton will be something I will try to get my paws on.

What I heard was big vs. clear. I got the choices right every time. I would assume the Martin is more opened up, at this point in its life, too. Frankly, I preferred the H&D. It really showed up in the D triad test. Spot on.

The Huss is definitely warmer, which I learn towards. But I have to admit, for the fingerstyle I think I actually preferred the Martins brightness which I didn’t expect. Both great guitars I’m sure. I want them both lol!
I got 4 of them right. The Martin. But that Huss & Dalton was neck and neck. Two great sounding guitars.

I picked the Martin each time, although I thought I was picking the H&D because of the clarity and definition. I didn't think the older Martin would be able to ring out like that, but I was pleasantly surprised! Jeremy, have you come across any vintage 80's Taylor's? It seems that they're starting to become more collectible and it would be cool to see a video on that brand soon! :)

As always I gravitated to the more jangly brighter, or to speak in vocal terms "wider" I did prefer the Martin on the finger side style though
Wow amazing the difference in their sounds. The lows and note separation on the Martin is out of this world and could be picked out of the two without hesitation
My ear picked out and preferred the Huss & Dalton each time.
There is a big difference in the structure of those two guitars. It's apples and oranges. I like them both. I have a Martin HD-28 from 1989, a Santa Cruz Tony Rice from 1998, and a Madagascar/Red Spruce Dred I built myself. They all sound different but I like them all. Variety helps you explore new things!

@Paul Boden Yours is a very fair & true comment!!! There's also quite a bit of difference in the bracing of the two guitars. I was surprised at just how well the H&D compared. It definitely held it's own!!! It would be a hard choice between the two, but I have to go with the note separation & clarity of the Martin this time!!!
I picked these wrong on the 1st 4 series. I think my ear was expected the Martin sound and it was the H&D...I finally corrected the last ones. Both sound solid...would love to play the H&D!
Put the headphones on and enjoyed them both. I think the Martin to my ear was a little more mellow with fewer high-frequency overtones that might make it easier to mix with more/other instruments in a recording situation. I'd love to own either one though.
Just skimming through the video (not even listening to the full segments) i was able to EASILY pick out the D28. It’s so much brighter.

Until you got to the finger style section I was picking the Martin all the way. I really love that Martin but I think they both sound great and you really can't go wrong.
I have owned several really good martins and still have a newer D35 (2015). I also bought a Huss and Dalton TD-M Custom because of Jeremy's first H&D video. I could not believe what my ears were hearing through my head phones. I just had to have it. So Jeremy thank you for that. The shimmer of the D28 was magical but like you said the bass from the TD-M hit different. Great video as always, but right now I just can't put my Huss and Dalton down.

Thank you, what a cool comparison! B, B, B, B, B, B, B, B... It's no surprise to me that a modern boutique built acoustic sounds better than a mass produced vintage Martin. Even one with Brazilian. Yes, I know Martin made far fewer guitars annually in Nazareth, PA back in the day, but with vintage instruments in general its a coin-toss on them improving with age... What sucks is that vintage guitars are priced entirely on physical condition since what our ears tell us is "good" is subjective. So lots of old acoustics in very good, sometimes museum grade condition that just sound unbalanced (in my opinion guitar A has an unbalanced tone compared to B).

Great video Jeremy. And we can't forget guitars are as individualistic as humans. When we hear a great sounding guitar and think that we should look into getting one of the same brand, the guitar that is built next might not be so awesome sounding.
The H&D will be scary, scary amazing when it’s 50+ years old. The fact that it compares so well now is the testament to Huss & Dalton’s craftsmanship.
They're not even built the same nor the same woods. No gaurentee it ages great

I found I liked a mix of both, but my chances of owning a 1967 Martin are slim at best, the H & D is a least a possibility, could you please do this test with a new made Martin?

Straight braced BRW vs scalloped braced mahogany. Compare the TD-M to a GE, then decide. 🙂

Mexican-made Martin's, including the x and road series, are hit or miss but the american-made stuff is all reliably good. Especially the 18 series and up.
I know which is which easy but was 50/50 on which sounded better for the situation

Martin has warmer and more low freq in sound.Huss amd Dalton is little brighter in higj freq but duller to my ears i would say.Martin for me.
I’m about to buy my first Martin. Not a pricey one, but new for just over $1k. My question is the DADGAD tuning - on a cheap acoustic I had, I went back and forth between tunings all the time but I’m slightly worried about doing it on an expensive guitar. Or is that a myth and a tick of a truss rod could fix any problems
Complete myth. I go back and forth between standard tuning and DADGAD along with tuning down all the time on very expensive guitars. I've never had an issue.

I'll be honest, I wouldn't kick either of them out of bed for eating crackers, but the Huss and Dalton had a clearer voice, while still retaining that boomy quality I expect in a Dreadnought.
Wow....I thought idve got it right as I'm martin all the way...untiiiil....aha. hard to tell on some parts and dadgad they sounded very similar but the first test I got completely wrong...I went with the huss for the martin as I preferred the sound of the huss...it had more depth and bass to it...loved the martin also tho.
If only huss were in the uk and at good prices. Good show

Hey Jeremy...have you tried an atkin d37 or atkin essential D....amazing builder over here in the uk but I've heard some of his guitars are over there...he does a lot and many artists have his guitars. If not...I know your busy but I'd love to see you review one ..especially the essential d as its mahogany. I think youd like it. ✌😁🎸👌. Enjoy what your doing
Thought there was more bass in B for 1st set. What do you think is the better tone woods for deeper, clearer bass? Adirondack top with what? Mahogany or Rosewood? VTS? As for strumming, I liked A.
In my experience, mahogany is more concise in the bass.
I'm going to demo a Huss and Dalton with a torrefied top soon, so we can get a close comparison.

I picked the H&D every time except
once. To me the mahogany has a richness within the depth that’s not as much present with the rosewood.

Being a D28 player myself I felt going in this would be one sided , and it was , the Huss & dalton wins strangely enough , that Martin is not as good as others I’d say , not all martins are created equal apparently
