Every time new cameras come out, we are all amazed at the technological advancements. Pros and people with money are probably having a lot of fun with these cameras. As an amateur and as a retiree, my budget is limited. I had to sell some older pieces of gear in order to help finance the purchase of the new at the time A7RV. I am not into video so, for me, it is the perfect camera. I hope my joy of using it will last a few years.

I've been using Sony Mirrorless since 2015. I have been using their point-n-shoot cameras since 2005. I can only relate to Sony about this and not Canon and Nikon since i dont follow their roadmaps anymore. But one thing is certain about Sony is that these new technological advancements will come to all of their cameras. When the A9 was released back in 2017, we got those features in the a7Riii and a7iii. Only missing features were the stacked cmos sensor and 20 fps burst.
Your a7RV is a superb mirrorless camera that the a7RIV should have been. It will last year 10-15 years and stay relevant too. It's the perfect Rolling Shutter a7R model and I think Sony maxed it out. So how do Sony top their a7RV model? Likely the future a7RVI is going to be a Global Shutter sensor and be more pricier at $4,500 usd price tag. Other than that, your a7RV will give you years of joy so shoot away.

@Broskisnowski I could have but didn't. At 70 years of age, my shaky hands and failing eyesight appreciate the state-of-the-art AI autofocus immensely. The extra expense was worth it.

@Broskisnowski Heck no dude! It's more like 60% of the a7RV. A7RIV doesn't have 10-bit colors, A.I. autofocus, tilt & flip LCD, and so much more. A7RIV is not even worth getting anymore. It's either A7Riii or a7RV.

@harryvuemedia5106 yes I recently got a7rv for sports, portraits and occasional birding
My mate has a7riv and the 5 is so much better and he is jeoulous as
Add to the fact you can crop very well ect to. Even though 10 fps I'm having no issues at sport with it even though i would like 15 to 20 fps. This is why I got r5 I stead of a9iii and will hold out and save that money for a1 ii

@@MRBuDWiZe Great choice! Yes, i disliked the a7Riv as I felt like Sony only released it to get a 61 mp sensor out and a new body. It's basically an a7Riii with more mega pixels. I would only buy an a7Riv if its $2,400 usd brand new or $2,00 usd used. I feel like the a7Riv is the least innovate model out of the entire a7R lineup.
For sur i plan to pickup an a7RV in the future as well. Its the perfect Rolling Shutter R model now. And I do think sony will make the future a1-ii a global shutter. Will be pricey though, im guessing $7,500 usd easily. Keeping it at that price tag will not devalue the A1 and A9iii greatly. Expensive but global shutter is just too damn good.

The A9iii is fantastic! I ordered right away. I shoot action and had two A9 bodies (I love the a9 series and couldn’t wait). In my opinion and for what I do 50mp isn’t needed, 24 is more than enough. The A9 iii doesn’t miss in any lighting situation. I don’t care about 250 iso it just bumps my shutter even more. 135 1.8, 50 1.2. It doesn’t miss.

I have the A1 and bought the A9iii. For me, the flip screen, precapture, latest AF system, the newer still/vid/S&P selector, a "*" on the dial for stills framerates so they can be adjusted digitally with bottons, and general speed of the camera itself is enough to have be selling my A1. (formatting a card is almost instantaneous and buffer dumping to a v90 card is extremely fast). There are a lot of usability upgrades that has close to doubled the speed i can operate. I pretty much always shoot at RAW lossless M anyway on my A1. I should say that i have an A7RV for work where i need the extra MP. i am very impressed with this new A9iii.

Hey Jared. I have an A1 but bought an A9iii. I love the 50Mega Pixels of the A1 but for shooting sports the A9iii had some distinct advantages for sports such as baseball. Ball going into the glove every time. Bat on ball just about all the time. Global shutter so no bent hockey stick on slap shots. Those are just a few off the top of my head. Hope to see you in Philadelphia soon. Thanks for what you do.

Do you mind the downgrade in megapixels? I probably wouldn't mind it given the benefits the A9iii provides and the smaller file sizes is convenient. I usually don't care for high megapixels however when I get a high megapixel camera, I usually get it for that reason.

I really love the new body design for the α9 III - can't wait to see that "trickle down" to the next regular/midrange α7 camera. To me that sort of stuff is more my speed than getting the expensive pro sports cameras I don't need the capability of. An α1 II with basically all of these upgrades but with the original α1 sensor (which is still INCREDIBLE by the way...Sony has it in their flagship professional cinema cameras the Venice 2 and Burano) sounds like a banger of a camera.

The 50MP of the A1 offers something different for me. No one is talking about moiré , some say the A9III will be better others say no. moiré is a major problem when shooting in front of large led screens. nice video.. i always enjoy the way you present. i am so sad about the global shutter. even when the digital cmareas started they use CCD its alomost a global shutter. one examble nikon d80 i own as a ccd sensor but same its a global shutter. then our newly build professional cameras came with global shutter and all comsumer level digital cameras using CMOS technology even professionla cameras so sad is all depends on the money. so the technology always there, so the manufactures play with it for years...show you got the perfect product. for global shutter just an nikon d80 camera or any camera in that era use CCD.. add video feature will be its all same.. sorry to menton these cameras i told dont have video fuction as of ther processor power. now we have more processing power. they why consumer cameras will not have a CCD sensor and have a video feature with global shutter. So tech already exict and tell people after long years its the new tech.

    Good detailed comparison, thanks Jared.
One small thing about the A1 (and later Alpha cameras) that has made a difference to my workflow is the mechanical shutter closing to prevent dust getting to thee sensor when changing lenses. The A9III doesn't have a mechanical shutter, so it can't do this. In its use case for sports though, photographers probably won't change lenses that often. It is another tick against it as a general purpose work tool though. I shoot with the A1, I need the megapixels and IQ more than the speed it has but it sure is a fast camera when I do need it. The A9 III looks like an awesome action camera, but I am in the" wait for the A1 II" camp.

The A1 always starts with 14bits also on compressed raw. After the compression you and up with about 13bits same as the A9III when using compressed raw. All the old cameras used a 12bits container for compressed raws the A1 and later highend sony cameras do not. Kind of amazing that after 2 years many people still don't see that there are 2 versions of the lossy compressed in sony cameras..

Grateful to have Sony lend me the a9M3, I was excited about these specs and now I have it in my hands. I’m at Track and Field Olympic trials, so these athletes move fast and critical to get the sweet spot over hurdles, so was looking forward to the 120fps. It’s fast, global shutter is fast. But this auto focus tracking is slow and can’t keep up with these athletes, so many out of focus shots as they are running their events. Also between the sensor and its inability to shoot low light, I lost so many shots. Found myself switching bodies while on the field because I felt like the a9M3 was failing me.
I look forward to a1M2 whenever that comes out, but I’m sticking with the a1 family.

Thank you for this in depth feature comparison review. Coming from the A7RV "dedicated A.I. chip" I am actually skeptical about the A9 III performance since I find though the subject recognition and tracking are accurate and sticky in the EVF most of the time I ended up with less hit rate (100% focus & sharp) than the A7IV it replaced with even after fine tuning the different complicated parameters from the default settings. It was like the brain is too smart and fast for the aging but more usable mechanical shutter, sensor readout and blackout time so I call it my beloved ADHD camera. I purchased a used A1 now and the hit rate is excellent which brings me to the subject that it would be wonderful if your personal experience on the hit-rates are also included in this comparison. At the end of the day, the hit rate of the final sharp images is what matters for anyone who purchase a camera regardless what year, generation, lists of technical or marketing slogans used to attach us to empty our wallet (I felt for it for the A7RV🤣). Just a suggestion.

On a side note, do those new adaptive presets work in LR Mobile? If so then I will be adding FroPack 4 to my FroPack1,2 and 3.

I don't find the 15 frames per second with 3rd party lenses to be an issue - right now I am shooting Low for multi shot. Insects since spring has started, soon I will be shooting bird shots. - Similar screen to the A9 III
    - Dual CF B slots (a boy can
    dream)
    - Full size HMDI (now I’m just
    crazy)
    - Variable Shutter

I just got the A9 III and was wondering why I waited so long. Analysis Paralysis and overthinking the Resolution Yada Yada issues. Hey this camera rocks. That’s all I can say. I also ended up getting the A7RV for stills work and feel like I’m set for speed, sports, portrait and landscapes with my 2 new bodies. I sold my trusty A7 IV and will miss it but look forward to moving forward. When the A1 Mark II comes out I’ll cross that bridge when it does. In the meantime I’m loving these two systems with my Sony GM lenses!

  • @RiceCubeTech
    @RiceCubeTech 3 місяці тому +1

Imo the A1 is more compelling for anyone who is not exclusively a sports shooter. The A1 can bridge the gap to sports better than any camera not an A9III with a global shutter (maybe an R3)
But the A9III can’t do high res shots, it’s not a great studio camera for that reason. While the slags sync speed is better, if you’re in a controller studio environment you shouldn’t be exceeding what the A1 can do anyways
imo, for video, I prefer 8K 24 and low iso than no rolling shutter. Some of the best cinema cameras in the world are not global shutter yet. Low iso for video and resolution imo is more important than a marginal increase in rolling shutter performance. Yeah it has “none” but the A1 has such minimal rolling shutter in 8k and 4K it’s almost negligible.
And many videographers who aren’t solo run and gun shooters won’t care about the AF improvements as they’ll have rigs with manual focus pulling or gears of some sort.

  • @tonyC5757

In the good old days a reasoably good dslr would last many years before they areconsidered old before being replaced by a newer model, but now anything more than 2 years is considered "old" for morrorless, especially for flagship modles, and they are also a lot kore expensive too.
When i bought yhe A9ii (upgraded from the A7iii) 3 years years ago, i thought that's probably my last that will last me for the rest of my photography journey, but as it turns out, i am begining to see why its falling behind in terms of design and capabilities.
As I am now starting to look out for a 40-ish MP sensor fullframe to compliment my A9ii, neither the A9iii nor the A1 fits my needs, Even after watching this video (not that this video is bad), i am still not convinced that either of the camera is for me, because one is "old" tech with less than ideal LCD resolution (just to mentuon one of the many old tech design) while the other doesnt have the pixel count (for those who is already using a 24MP body).
I guess as the battle to dominate the FF indistry between the 3 big brands continues, consumers like us will just have to be mentally prepared that whatever is going to come out next (be it the A1ii, or the A7v), they won't stop there, and the change will only be faster and more expensive.
I am an event shooter btw.

I’m inclined to wait for the A1 II mainly for the resolution but I have seen what the A9 III is capable of. The AF is the best I have ever seen and like you said this is the best feeling camera ergonomically out there. The tech pack has got to be in the new A1 II which I hope Sony announces soon. With that said, I picked up the new 300 2.8 with the 1.4 and 2.0 TC and have literally ditched my 200-600. Combined with the A9 III I keep thinking this lens would be the ultimate pairing but then again I feel Sony has to come out with the new A1 II soon with all of the features of the A9 III and more. What a dilemma. Who knows what will happen for us who are impatient. 🤔
