  • I'm ashamed to admit that I actually shot a video about this, and lost the footage, but in this episode, we'll revisit the replacement muffler that I installed on our project SV650.
    Originally, the bike came to us with a very short, very loud, 9" Delkevic straight-through muffler, which looked and sounded pretty cool, but was unbearably loud (for me, anyway) in actual use. To address this, I swapped it out with an 18" version, which Delkevic's customer service reps told me is the quietest one they make.
    It definitely is quieter, which was the important thing to me, although credit where it's due, I think the 9" sounds better.

    If you aren't wearing earplugs, the wind is damaging your hearing regardless of muffler choice.

      Dean Beauchamp so I guess the wind makes the muffler irrelevant.

      @@deezy9622 look I made the comment a year ago. I think it was in response to some comment in the vid that if the muffler was really loud you'd need earplugs. My point is if you have concern for your hearing you should already be wearing them regardless. There isn't anything to dispute.

      Yes, always wear earplugs for comfort and safety.

    I am running the 18" can on an XSR700. I got a decibel meter app for my phone and measured the sound of my 18" can with the quiet core in it, about 24" and 45° from the end, getting a reading of 87 dB at idle and 96 dB at around 5000-6000 rpm sustained free rev sitting still. It was virtually perfect. I had ordered the "quieter core" in case I wanted quieter. But the 18" can is totally acceptable in almost all circumstances, including leaving home at 6:00 am in the morning.
    Also no irritating drone when riding down the highway at sustained 5000 rpm. I contacted Delkevic to confirm no ECU reflash needed too.

    It's crazy how big of a difference it made! When I had my gs500 I got the 9 inch Delkevic exhaust and it was stupid loud. I ended up going back to stock because I couldn't stand how loud it was.

    • @AaronAverett
      @AaronAverett  5 років тому +3

      Yeah, there's no substitute for a stock muffler in my opinion, but the more time I spend with the 18" Delkevic one, at least on the SV, the more I like it.
      I'd probably have gone back to stock too, but I don't think there's a single straight stock SV650 muffler anywhere in the world.

      @@AaronAverett that's true. I just bought a 2005 sv650 and it has the stock muffler, but what I didn't realize was the previous owner drilled holes in the end of it to make it louder lol. It just sounds like a bad exhaust leak.

    Very helpful, informative sir. And your hearing is more important than the muffler choice on your bike. I have a 14" Delk on my '22 KLR Adventure. It is a lovely sound, especially the droning going down the highway. Ride safe!

    Thanks for making this video, just what I was looking for. I am presently fitting the 18'' high level Delkevic, but it is quite long and fouls the number plate. I considered swapping it for the 9'' one, but after watching your video I have decided to stick with the 18'' job and will make it fit.

    I agree 100% - the quieter the better ... loud pipes may claim to save lives, but they are horrible for anything else.

  • @AnotherMotorist
    @AnotherMotorist 3 роки тому +1

    I think the 18" muffler is suppose to be mated to a shorter mid pipe? Either way showcased quite a difference in sound level. Sound is similar but overall db lower.

  • @pcofranc
    @pcofranc 5 років тому

    Gr8 vid, comparison, ear plugs are essential. The shorter one produces a cool deep sound but the longer one is better for regular riding. I put a used OEM BMW stock header on my 250cc scooter and it provides a quite but deep sound that is just enough to hear at low speed and sounds cool without being loud and that is all that is really needed.

    Good video mate,
    I am deciding between 9 and the 14 inch version as the 18" be to long for my liking on the suzuki dl650 but I do have concerns about 14" being too load and its rated db 98 to 100 sound although it is within the allowable range here in new zealand. so what are your taughts between the 18 and 14" model? Cheers

      @AaronAverett  Рік тому

      I haven’t tried the 14” version, but I would use the biggest one I could. I don’t see why the 18 wouldn’t fit, though. It would just stick out a few inches farther back, wouldn’t it?

      Aaron Averett oh ok thanks for the info. I have the 2018 and the local rep for delkevic tells me with a cat installed the 225mm (9 inch) pipe won’t be too loud. I’m torn between the 225mm and 350mm oval carbon pipe.

    • @AaronAverett
      @AaronAverett  5 років тому +1

      I'd definitely go with the larger of the two, but I'm not really a loud exhaust kind of person.
      How do you like the 2018?

    • @SirSpinalColumn
      @SirSpinalColumn 5 років тому

      Aaron Averett yeah I don’t mind a bitt of noise, plus I’ve asked the rep and it’ll come with a removeable baffle included. Ive just had a couple of cars try to pull out on me already so I want to be noticed.
      I love it, have the SV650X with clip ons and small bikini fairing around the front light. I’m in Australia with a provisional license so it has to be restricted to 45hp but as soon as I’m on my full license I can have derestricted for about $500AUD with a flash tune.

    Did you have to cut your pipe to put on the pipe initially?

    • @AaronAverett
      @AaronAverett  3 роки тому

      It was already cut when the bike came to me, but I believe you would have to cut off the stock muffler in order to install this, since the stock muffler appears to be welded directly to the pipe.

    • @motopasky
      @motopasky 3 роки тому

      If you have a bike which has a non removeable muffler (i.e. welded instead of using pipe clamps) then likely the Delkevic systems will come as a 3/4. You keep the original head pipe, but replace the mid pipes and muffler (there generally are clamps between head and mid pipes). In most cases this will also mean that the cat is eliminated.

      This is with the baffle things installed, which is how the 18" one comes new. To be honest, though, I couldn't tell much of a difference between having them in and not, and I don't think it would have been apparent at all in the video.
