Thanks Adam for putting the work in to make this video and providing us with a guide on how to make our mixes at home sound much better, and all for FREE! Thank you! If I'm ever in Florida I'll come say hi and lay down some vocals :)
I sent you an e-mail while back in 2013 asking for mixing tips, and you were amazing answering. Today 2018 I am watching your video tutorials, thanks dude!
Thanks for share your knowledge with us! I've always been watching the boyce`s videos and wanted to know how they were recorded and mixed, 'cause they always sounded amazing for me! Would be awesome if in the next video you show to us what you do in your master. Keep going!
Adam, these videos are fantastic. I've learned so much, and after trying some of these techniques, I can already hear the difference! One of the best mixing series I've Seen. I'm never mono miking my acoustic for covers again!! Lol. Would it be okay for me to send you a mix via email or something for your critique? Appreciate it Adam!
Thank you. Glad it helped! You can send anything to my email adam@adambarber.net. Be patient, sometimes it can take a bit for me to listen to stuff sent to me.
Hey Adam, quick question - you mentioned you tracked the vocals going through your custom 1176, may I ask what attack/release settings you generally use on it for vocals? (P.s Still waiting on that mastering video! ;)
I have the attack at around 11-12 o’clock and the release as fast as possible. I wish I had the motivation to do a mastering video but I make no money from UA-cam and making videos takes forever. :( to be honest, I don’t do much to mastering. Just more high end EQ and a limiter. :)
@@AdamBarber3PR You're a hero, thank you for replying so quick! I totally understand that, and appreciate the massive effort you have already put into these videos, I would 100% pay for videos just like these - maybe a mixing course as some have suggested would be a good compromise? You truly are a godsend to the community, thanks again Adam!
A few years ago we purchased a Wunder cm7 microphone that we use for vocals now. I use AT 5045’s for guitar and cajon as well. Haven’t used the 4060’s in awhile but they are great mics for the price.
Hi Adam! Thanks so much for the video, a lot of great information. Do you have any method for volume automation or it's song dependent? I mean, do you set the volume low and automate to raise some parts or the opposite, setting the volume high and dial down notes/parts? Cheers!
Hey Adam! Quick question here: I have a studio in Bucharest where I'm always trying to improve my acoustics. Now the live room sounds great for drums and most acoustic instruments, but I'm doing a little diy project in making 2 acoustic panels (2m/1m each) and I was wondering, from your experience, where should I place them for maximum damping effect without getting the low mid bump/boominess which I get with normal reflexion filters. The window from the live room is on the singer's left side, so that leaves me with a V shaped option either in front or behind the vocalist. The room generally sounds fine as it is (it's 3.80m square room with 3m ceiling) but I'm getting the odd small ringing reflections/echoes from the kick drum metal parts or the radiator, the rest of it is properly acoustically treated. It's basically a "room within a room", all the walls have 2 more layers on top of the original building structure: a layer of fiberglass and a layer wooden panels on top them + a few more panels on top of everything to eq out some mid and upper mid harshness, but it's NOT completely "dead". Now for vocals I would love a bit more of a cleaner (dead) sound than I'm getting at the moment. Any ideas? Thanks, Cezar
That reverb sound is SO natural! Looks like x verb has been replaced by flex verb and I have been trying to use the settings you showed to get the reverb tails similar to what you have but the tone seems to be way off.. what reverb and settings do you currently use? Is it the x verb still?
I recently was unable to install X-Verb on my home setup (Windows 10), SSL wasn't able to help. So I decided it was time to transition away from X-Verb. Sadly Flexverb is crap. I have tried to use it multiple times but I really dislike everything about it. My main two now are Verb suite Classics and Breeze 2.
@@AdamBarber3PR nice which algorithm do you go for with verb suite for vocals. Do you still tweak the filters or boost low end with eq on the verb? By the way, very big fan of your work!!
Your tutorials are amazing! .. in electric guitars which plugins do you use to emulate amps?, I've read in an interview that you think that there are good sounding plugins for clean electric guitars, can you suggest one or maybe make a video about it?

Hi, Thank you very much for your video! Send more videos like with this, another musics please!Do you really need so many compressors? Reverb I use with a track send, I can put in the same track of the voice, just like you did? Do you think it's better? Thanks!!
I generally like to use two or three compressors doing what I could have had one doing. The knee curves on compressors generally start making them less "transparent" the more you compress, so by adding two or three doing a few db's each, I tend to like the sound a bit more. There are a few compressors I tend to hit pretty heavy. Our 1176 I use on vocals I hit 8-10db of gain reduction when I am tracking. Sometimes I do add reverb directly to a track but 9 times out of 10, I use a send. There's a bunch of reasons why and I am working on a reverb and delay video that will go into it a bit.
Help me so much!! I will use this method of compressor. This is not the first time I see this. I'm following your channel as subscribed! Thank you very much!
If you're referring to the wooden looking one that Alejandro uses, it's a Telefunken. Not sure of model. The silver one that Jennel recently used in Señorita is an Earthworks SR314. Still using AT 4060 and Slate VMS for recording though.
Thanks for this tutorial, almost months i been looking for this kind of tutorial, and now ill find it already, i love it so much! can i ask what is the name of the last plugin are you using? i cant hear your voice that time, and the video is bluring in my screen so i can't see the name too, the last plugin next on the q10 plugin what is the name?
Adam Barber thanks bud ! Then when filming need to practice on singing along the actual recording and make sure it’s synced with original recording . Kind of weird Isn’t ?
Isaac Kadosh no. It works quite well. Since they have already recorded it, the parts are pretty well rehearsed, plus the quality of separating filming is worth it. Most people don’t notice or care, it’s about the product.
@@AdamBarber3PR I totally agree with you from 'end result' perspective. I am just wondering why there isn't a best practice to just record everything one take like audio + video. Especially when dealing with killer professionals musicians
Hey, I recently bought the Alctron PF8 Pro filter as well but I have no clue to what shock mount I should get to support it. So far I know I need a heavy duty mic stand to support the portable Microphone Acoustic Isolation Shield by Griffin but I have no clue to what I should get to support the Alctron PF98 Pro, can you suggest a shock mount or everything I need, including the mic Stand?
I would guess the shock mount would depend on what microphone you're using. There are some good after-market microphone shock mounts that are fairly inexpensive if the one you're using doesn't work well. I have never used the PF8 so I am not the best to ask about it. I would check on the Gearslutz forums or Amazon feedback threads for that product.
Thank you for the attention. I already figure it out. I bought two universal rycote mic schock mounts. It holds the weight of the PF8 and fits well with the griffin isolation booth.
The "Litte Red Cue Box" by Redco audio. It's only a cue box and doesn't power the headphones, the Grace M905 provides the amp. The cup holder was purchased from Guitar Center or another online site. Can't remember which but can probably be found on Amazon for fairly cheap. Doubles and a headphone stand as well!
Much appreciated comment. My current acoustic recording chain is two Audio Technica 5045's and custom API preamps. I don't compress the acoustic to Protools. My vocal chain is a Wunder CM7/GS mic, Wunder preamp and the custom 1176 compressor.
