    Wow - Sexy how they do it without having to stop! As usual, thanks for some well-shot and interesting video moments along the tracks, Adam!

      Thank you for watching Steve yeah this is one thing of railroading here in the USA that we are actually doing right, just like European or Asian countries trains over there can change on the fly. While Metro-North has mastered this neighboring New Jersey Transit has not mastered changing power on the fly while moving. NJTransit has the Alp45dp and uses them a lot, but to change from diesel to electric NJTransit's rule says only change power while at a station stop. Something happened in Hoboken when the ALp45dps were brand new an engineer was given the order to change on the fly from diesel to overhead electric he did but he was on a yard track with no overhead catenary so the pantagraph sprung up and basically broke. So it wasn't fault of the Alp45dp locomotive but incorrect operating orders so now Transit still switches power while standing still, while Metro-North knows how to do it on the fly.

      Hi Adam - Thanks for taking the time to explain the differences in power changing between the two railroads. Most interesting! Must do some watching there with my still cameras on next visit!

    Pretty neat that they do that on a regular basis

    • @LibertyRailfan
      @LibertyRailfan  7 років тому +1

      Yes it is Elliot and that the MNCR does it on the fly just like European Railways do. NJT does this action as well with the ALP45DPs but Transit only switches the ALP45's power while stopped at stations.

    Interesting video!!!! As I understand it, the train operator gets a cab signal to initiate the changeover and it occurs at speed.

    • @LibertyRailfan
      @LibertyRailfan  7 років тому +2

      Yes it does right at track speed.. Now there used to be an overlap of the catenary with the 3rd rail but now there is an electrical gap between the catenary and the 3rd rail I'd say a few hundred feet at least, the trains are just gliding on stored power between the electrical circuits.

    • @smwca123
      @smwca123 6 років тому +2

      When/why did they remove the overlap? As I see from this and several other videos, inbound trains drop their pantographs before the first car engages the third rail. Outbound trains are completely off the 3rd rail but have to coast further until it's completely under wire before raising the pans.

      Sorry for the late response just seeing this now on YT. I wouldn't know something to ask Metro-North why did they do that? Possibly you can email them and they may tell you. I see it's a significant break in electric pickup I guess its like a phase gap type of thing. They always better make sure the trains are coasting here or you might have a stuck train.

    I was going to ask u if there were any M2/M4/M6 left when at the end of your video one passed by! Very Nice Video! How many sets left Adam? I am curious? Thought New Haven was all M8. Thanks

    • @LibertyRailfan
      @LibertyRailfan  7 років тому

      Thank you for watching John, I'm not going to know how many sets each railroad has; later on the day when my friends and I were at Stamford we saw more of the older sets pass by. It appears that LIRR has more of the older sets than MNCR / CDOT does have operating.

      Liberty Railfan Productions From what I just read? 24 cars left on metro north. I believe there are (I think I have the right total) 173 M3 on the Lirr

      John Kaufmann ahh cool yeah that would be why we can't see as much on the MNCR as what one could see on the LIRR for older units.

    I really don't understand why the M8 singles aren't placed in between pairs like the M4s and M6s but I guess the MTA had their reasons for that setup. Great video.

    Cool you're listening to the 150-160 or so Mhz rail radio. Ive had no luck here in Waterbury CT with my SDR recieving anything even though there are transmitters, the closest being at the train station itself and I'm in Bunker Hill , NW Waterbury residential area..oh well.

    • @LibertyRailfan
      @LibertyRailfan  5 років тому +1

      Thank you for watching Elaine Fairchilde, yup you need just a regular police type scanner to hear the frequencies. The radio has railroad mode so whoever is broadcasting you should hear it, the golden rule is typical you need to be close to the action as most transmitters are low power and you need to be in the general area to receive the broadcast.

      @@LibertyRailfan Liberty thanks for the reply. I think the reason I don't hear it using my software-defined radio is they use some kind of CSQ modluation. It's not listenable (unless I'm just getitng such little chatter and since I'm using it indoors etc and not listening enough) like an unencrypted narrowband FM channel. www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?fccCallsign=WQKL975 Yep you're right the nearest transmitter to me is something like 100 watts, for that I'd have to check the FCC license search site which is useful but that's what it is, possibly. I get confused and think maybe it's "TETRA" which afaik software-defined radios can't yet decrypt but it's more scrambled than encrypted if anything. thanks again for the reply, I'll try taking my laptop and SDR close to the train station where the transmitter is sometime if I feel up to it hah. Great vids, subbed.
