Metro-North Railroad Evening Rush Hour on New Haven Line @ Pelham w/ Mode Changes (1/19/17)

- Shot between 3:10 pm and 5:30 pm. Pelham is a great spot during the rush period, where you can get a multitude of MU equipment passing through the power supply source change just west of the station. Through the course of about 2 hours, we see almost all of Metro-North's mainline passenger equipment, including the M8s, M2s, and P32AC-DM powered Shoreliner trains (obviously no M3As since those don't run on the New Haven Line). Enjoy the many meets and the pantograph action =)

3:56 I would've had the exact same reaction lol.
Random Railfan same
Its so freaking annoying when that happens lmao
Same thing I would’ve said
Nicely shot - I love the tele-compressed views of the trains, multiple pantographs, and infrastructure. Neat how they do this on the fly!
Perfect video, also perfect example of transition from 3rd rail to overhead catanary ❤️❤️
One of the few US trains I like. Nice vid.
The Growl I’ve never actually risen on metro north but this train has a really cool theme although I am excited for the m9s on the lirr because I’m visiting Long Island this winter and I don’t know when the m9s will be ready for passenger use but I hope the will be ready in December because maybe I will get a chance to ride one
I realize I'm commenting four years later so you may not get this but I've been writing Metro-North from rides Grand Central over 30 year period I remember the older cars when they still have smoking and bar car. Not sure if you're aware of those.
Great video of the raising and lowering of the pantographs
Great video! Thanks for the unique action on the pantographs!
Excellent ! I've always wanted to see the pantographs go down, and then switch to DC third rail operation. It's seen at 9:27. Thanks so much. Aarre Peltomaa
27:20 never realized that you could see the Columbus Avenue NYW&B station abutments from there (in the late fall, winter, and early spring, I mean0.
Nice video of the 750v dc third rail and 12.5kv 60hz AC overhead lines switching done by the Metro North M8 and M2 train cars if you are able to go to the United Kingdom this third rail to overhead lines operation is found on thameslink by Class 387,319 & 700 EMU or West London Line by Class 377 EMU since those British Railways EMU have similar capability as the M2 & M8
Also, in due time, the IEPs will be switching from diesel mode to electric and vice versa.
In love with the Hornblasters Shocker XL train horn that somebody honked at 37:16. Thinking of customizing my own car with it.
Congrats on 15K subs!
Thanks!
This video is great!!!!!!!!! Keep up the good work!!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
So weird to see the Stone Faiveley AMBR Pantograph not on a British train, didn’t think they were used elsewhere, this video is amazing I love the 3rd rail to overhead switch action never gets old
they are bracknell and willis high speed pantographs
Eurostar trains are tri-voltage. From the wiki:
Class 373 sets were built as tri-voltage, able to operate on 25 kV 50 Hz AC (LGVs, Eurotunnel, High Speed 1, UK overhead electrified lines) and 3 kV DC (Belgian classic lines) using pantographs, and 750 V DC (UK third rail network) using third-rail pickup shoes.
I love Metro North!!! Also, congrats on 15,000 subscribers!
Thanks!
Fan Railer you have the best videos . I think you should some videos on high speed trains in the Uk like Eurostars, Tgv and others.
GREG`S Gaming And Vlogs its not high speed pr European.

Make that now 606.000 subscribers in 2022!
So they let the train coast for a little bit before the changeover from catenary to third rail and vice versa? Didn't realize the change was that sudden too
Nice video! But what happened at the end with man who jump in yor side??)
The guy went to run at the open doors
Whoa whoa, what happened at the end? lol
Daniel Huang yea what happened?
Daniel Huang crazy people these days
Those doors dont open so he ran to the open door..
+Spanish Boy He wasn't crazy, That door wasn't open so he ran to the other open doors to get it in time
I'm not a big fan of running the m8s because of the constant cab signal flips and the banging around when braking, however I do like the way they run under the wire. Nice and fast. They are so much quieter than an m7 which sounds like a cat being strangled
Nice to know where the changing point is from overhead wire to third rail and v.v. is.
Excellent footage. Too bad there's so little variety of equipment these days.
Well this is because this part of the New Haven line is this pantographs and overhead wires where we switch over from third rail unlike the Harlem and Hudson lines which are completely third rail plus this is the Northeast corridor. We still use diesel engines as well as they are frequented on this line even up till now.
I can see that the trains are clear of the 3rd rail (and apparently coasting) before the raise/lower the pantograph. Is that a requirement or can both be engaged and the transfer switch can handle both power systems and choose itself which to use?
At 9:41 you can see a spark on the rail -- not the powered 3rd rail as you normally see -- as the train crosses into the 750V DC block from the 12.5kV AC block.
Great video, Thanks
At 6:38, did that westbound M8 consist drop the pans before reaching the 3rd rail segment?
F23A4 Accord Yeah, the trains coast to the other power source
The m8 seems to have a traction motor similar to that of an r179 subway car and an m9
Pelham is one of the best places to railfan
Bruh that scene at 3:08 was amazing lol I didn't know they can do that..
Number of Trains
32: M8 EMU
1 M2 EMU 1542 to New Haven
2 Danbury P32's Deadhead to Grand Central
Total of Trains: 35
why is the coupler covered
OMG! I remember I took the metro north and pass by every day on Saturdays
3:55 lol what happens to me everytime when trying to film the subway lol
TheTransitNetwork Always that one guy.
TheTransitNetwork If You Listen Closely, He Even Says "Fucking"
TheTransitNetwork lmfaooooooo
1:42
Wow!
3両目は中間車両で、2両目と4両目は先頭車両なんですね!
自由にユニットが組めるのは凄い!!
Pelham Station beginning?
Is the process of raising or lowering the contactor arms (whatever they are called) automatic, or does the engineer have to trigger that?
It is manually actuated.
The engineer controls the pantographs at speed.
5-12 M8 consist pairs awesome
Awesome video! Does the catenary end after that station?
maxrailroad It alternates in sections. I’m not entirely sure but there might be a button on the control panel that the motorman uses to switch from power from Catenary to 3rd rail.
Yeah definitely. Around 7:45, there’s a sign in yellow that says “CHANGE OVER”
There’s a short stretch with both catenary and third rail. At the end the catenary goes up to an overhead beam and that’s the last of it. Not really visible from Pelham but seen in cab ride footage.
You're looking at Pelham station it's the next stop just about Mount Vernon East it switches over from third rail to pantograph between Pelham and New Rochelle. Pantographs end in New Haven Connecticut.
So they stop using the pantograph before reaching the third rail. How interesting.
David Ng They coast until they reach the other power source.
Same that person at 3:54 got in the way of the camera lol. Also, did the train that appeared at that same time frame have a WABCO horn? Nice video. It is very nice to see the mode change.
nah, just a really fouled S2M
@@FanRailer RS2M or S2M?
@@MetroSouthRailVideos RS
@@FanRailer ok.
Excellent video. Question: Does the power supply change automatically when the pick-up shoes hit or drop the 3rd rail or does the train operator have to make the change manually?
It is a manual change-over. There is a dial-switch in the cab for this function.
The train can never be in contact with both the 3rd rail and the overhead wire at the same time.
Fan Railer so the trains "glide" between the power sources?
@@geofftech i think so, they are going 70-80-90 mph its not gonna stop before it gets to other power source
When I visit New York which train would I take so that I can ride these M8's?
Nate Joe The New Haven Line
Nate Joe On Metro North, take the New Haven Line. You're pretty much guaranteed to see these.
Nate Joe go on the New haven line and New Canaan branch, that’s where you will find these trains
Grand Central Terminal.
How is the train powered when it’s neither on a pantograph or overhead line?
It's not. It's coasting.
@@FanRailer then how are the lights still on?
@@spl1011 Battery power for the auxiliaries.
I am guessing changing to 3rd rail is so the trains can run on New York subway tracks. Am I right. Say different if i am wrong. :D
Wrong. Has nothing to do with the subway.
nice video i subscribed
hey fan railer you should do long videos like these on the path train.
It's illegal
man starts running towards camera the end!
I want the M2s soon to be retired tho
When was the third rail installed just south of Pelham? The third rail used to end south of East Nowalk, according to this video ecorded in 2017. ua-cam.com/video/eu5JuQIfZpo/v-deo.html Cool!
East Norwalk isn't even in this video, and 3rd rail has been illegal in CT since 1905.
3:56-4:00 SERIOUSLY?
Back when the roach coach’s were still in service on the new haven line
M8’s sound nothing like M9’s idk why people lie and say that they sound alike
I always take the M8’s
guy clam down clorx just look at the videos of the lirr m9. You will see why he is upset.
M2 - 1
M8 - 32
P32 - 2
Hey bro I live there
a vet @38:00 great stop
Did anyone notice? @ 1:47
What
Nope.
maschneider93 pantographs
Looks like London underground train
These are the newer trains I've ridden the older trains for 30 years back when they still had bar car and smoking car.
interessante Züge
здорово
66,665 view as of now, lol.
Yeah its all great I guess, but ultimately it just sucks cuz theres no all night train service to NYC and back! :(. At least have it run every hour, or at least have a 4am train back to New England. Like bloody hell, what a load of RUBBISH!
As opposed to what, your nonsense? This isn't New York City and the subway this is a commuter railroad known as Metro-North please go out to the suburbs and satellite cities such as Stamford, Greenwich, New Haven and other suburban area and is part of the Northeast Corridor.
For 30 years I commuted from Rye to Grand Central Terminal. People returning home out of GCT including myself had absolutely no intention of requiring a train back to Manhattan at 3:30 in the morning.
Did anyone notice that M8 car with no cabs at all? 16:23
3:57 dude, you gotta learn to manage your anger lol
nah fuck those people lmfao
I can see Mickey Mouse in the background
I bet you haven't found Waldo either.
Always late, always something, g damn incompetents
Then get up earlier. I commuted from Rye to Grand Central Terminal over a 30 year period at 5:30 in the morning. They're always going to be breakdowns and issues including inclement weather as well I plan to head sometimes you can't avoid them even if you're in a car and traffic you can still be late.
You can always walk and then you'll only have yourself to blame.
The m8 looks so ugly from the outside but in the inside it looks nice
Everyone's a critic
Clorox Bleach Why do you think the m8 looks ugly that is how the m9 for lirr is going to look but a little different.
Gregory Ward idk I just don't go crazy for the front of the train the inside is beautiful an the sides
Gregory Ward I like how the m7 trains look better but that's just my opinion but the m8 inside looks beautiful
Clorox Bleach you dumass
