I only saw Renata Tebaldi live on two occasions. The first was as Manon Lescaut and the second was as Desdemona in Otello. Although I had listened to many of her recordings, none really prepared me for hearing her in person. As powerful as she sounds in this magnificent recording, seeing her in person was a transformative experience... she was truly a force of nature. In person her voice was an absolute beacon of sound - voluptuously rich, creamy, towering over everything in a way that I had never heard before and have not heard since. She also could produce legitimate, supported pianissimi that were as if from heaven. I should add that it surprises me that even the most ardent Tebaldi admirers sometimes concede the "drama" trophy to Maria Callas. When Tebaldi had a great director and the right conductor (Mitropoulus, for example) her acting ability emerged. The color video of Tebaldi singing 'Un bel di' is one of the most moving opera experiences of all time. In any case, thank you so much for posting this. It is certainly one of the best recordings of the aria that I've come across.

I have seen live most of the great singers of the mid-to-late 20th century, including Renata Tebaldi who had, I believe, the most beautiful voice the world has ever heard. At her best, the voice spanned astonishingly deep, almost earth-shaking chest tones all the way up to top notes that felt as if they would lift the roof off the opera house. Depending on what the score called for, her sound could be creamy, warm, sensual, powerful, lush, playful, regal, delicate, or monumental. At the middle-top portion of her range Tebaldi could produce what has famously been described as a "wall of sound" - an almost indescribably rich, dense, powerful tone that was virtually addictive in its allure. Simply put, once you heard Renata Tebaldi live, all other voices paled by comparison.

@@tebaldoable Although I came around a little too late for Tebaldi, I had a similar transformative experience when I heard Caballe in the flesh. I had listened to one recording (granted, just one) and knew the voice was beautiful. However, I was completely unprepared for what I experienced live. Her voice seemed to envelop everything around it. It is still, 44 years later, the greatest singing I have ever heard.
Phenomenal singing. Such a huge blade in Madame Tebaldi’s voice.
Tebaldi sang with such warmth and heart . A great human being as well as an outstanding singer.

I had the privilege to see Renata many times when she sang at S,Carlo in Naples. Then I was at the University,so with some friends, opera lovers and fans ,we met her many times. Her performances were always sold out, I remember I was standing the whole night before the theater to get the tickets for an unforgettable Traviata.

I was fortunate enough to hear and see Renata Tebaldi many times in her mature prime. She came to New Haven and sang a recital that brought a stolid audience to its feet, cheering ecstatically. I heard he sing Manon Lescaut in Hartford with Domingo a week before his debut at the Met. I remember hearing the chorus afterward in the train, arguing that "no matter what the critics say, she is still fantastic."

And she was fantastic . She had some vocal difficulties occasionally in mid to late career , some of the critics were cruel. I think the cruellest was when certain critics dubbed her 'the grandmother of the far west' when she sang La Fanciulla at the Met. However , who remembers those critics names now and yet folks all over the world are still listening to Tebaldi! She was not the only singer of stature to receive criticism There were critics who compared Magda Olivero's American appearences to Florence Foster Jenkins, despite all her sensitive artistry. At the end of the day it is the public that gives the answer to those critics by its tumultuos applause for these artists.
