I changed my turbo when I put a welded cooler in my 05 I changed the drain and feed lines changed the cac boots. I went with a Powermax stage 1 a lot more response oh a lot more whistle sounds like a jet with 4 inch turbo back exhaust no cat just a resonator. Bearings were gone in stock factory turbo vanes sticking unison ring was worn.
I guess that's one benefit to having small hands and skinny arms. I had to use a magnet once I had em loose to get all but one of turbo bolts out because I couldn't my hands in there to grab em.
I am impressed. I am no mechanic. You pro's make it look so dang easy. I am Just a weekend dude needing a new turbo. I am on 2 hrs. But I WILL succeed, being stubborn and cheap forces that to occur. Besides. We are 3 hours from the nearest honest mechanic.
Been a tech for 20 years in dealership. I can say you have perfected this technique! AwsomAwesome! Thanks for being willing to share it with us. Thanks.
I was about 64 yrs old when I did mine. I sure as heck didn’t hold it up for anyone to see. That thing is heavy. Good job young man. I love your tools too.
I removed my turbo when doing the oil cooler change and cleaned it. Taking it out is super easy putting it back in and getting up pipes and exhaust to line up and seal is another story.
I have the early 2003 6L so that one bolt may be different (glad you mentioned it). I don't know if my turbo is going bad...hard start, peculiar loud noise - I'll need to check several other parameters but it's making a peculiar/odd noise so I'm suspecting the turbo. At any rate, I watched your video and this will save me TONS of time if the issue is in fact a turbo R&R. Thanks so much for taking the time to assist & inform others. Kudos.
Terrific video! Thanks so much, PowerStroke Tech Talk w/ARod. J Gatti87 : Diesel Tech Ron was the best! What an amazing kind-hearted individual to share so much knowledge. Legendary! Hats of to all those who take the time to outfit and hang your phone or camera, edit, and all the rest to benefit someone else watching your videos. You are all so helpful. Thank you!
Thank you very much for this post. I have watched it several times to gain the confidence to pull the turbo so I can change the up and y pipes. Thank you again!
I did one turbo on a 6.0 many years ago. But it was on an E450 box van. Was a piece of cake. Had our 12 F350 w/ 6.7L dually in for a check engine light today. Seams that the fuel pressure isn't dropping on shut off. Hangs up once in 5 tests.
The first thing that got me impressed is the way you positioned your camera,I also need to change the turbo charger of my 2004 F 350 SuperDuty and will want to seiz the opportunity to also change the ipr valve because from the look of things it is like the screen is broken with the oil 🛢leak around the engine.I hope that after watching your video, it will help me to get it done.
Good job you do a lot more set up than I do I usually waste a lot of time grabbing tools I can typically get the turbo out in about 20 minutes however getting it back into place is a little bit more of a pain in the ass I struggle with the exhaust clamps to get them off but I live in Michigan it's pretty good environment for corrosion
Just picked up a mechanic apprentice job and I’m working on one of theses. Vgt went out along with bad turbo. PCM couldn’t tell something was wrong kept blaming it on the egr. Been to 2 mechanics before us. Put new vgt and fixed the surging it was getting but turbos under pressure now. Rebuilding turbo tomorrow. Just studying. Thanks for the insight
The 6.0 PowerStroke has become my favorite engine to listen to. I drive a late '99 7.3 but the firing order and late firing injector make the running sound less enjoyable for me.
Hi good afternoon I have a question for u any idea how much a mechanic would change to fix it my turbo I have ford 250 2004 that truck have a good memories belongs to my brother did he pass away last year
I watched this all the way through (quite impressive!) but then went out to my truck and the same old turbo was still in there. How many times do I have to watch it before it swaps out mine?
I do find these instructional videos such a blessing! I have an 03 and have had the turbo off when I did some work to upgrade to an 05 intake along some other upgrades. Just recently developed an oil leak somewhere on top and it's not on or near the oil cooler. Assuming it's the turbo drain tube. I need to update both the drain tube and feed line. Do these older drain tubes have issues normally? Is it critical for the newer drain tube to be in so far as the older tube has a stop? Thanks again ARod!
Good shit brother. I did a 6.0 turbo last Friday. you know how long I been fighting those air filters I have a new way NOW THANKS. the exhaust clamps I unbolt them and spray them with some good penetrating spray and they usually pop soon after. But I think your back east so probably more pain in the ass with all that rust and salt.
HOLY SHIT!!! That is one clean 2007! Brings back memories of my 2007 before I sold it to get into my 2016. I can't believe I'm actually saying this, but I miss those 6.0 days. Yup you did it exactly the day I used to do it. The bothers I had with doing this job were: those pushpins that retain the wiring loom over the cowl (the MAP sensor one being the hardest without breaking), that damn cheesy VGT wiring connector with the two retaining tabs that snap ever so easily, and once undoing the coolant bottle, pulling it off to side used to make me extremely nervous about possibly breaking that 'y' connection between the heater hose to front cover tube. Looks like this '07 also needs the update drain tube (6C3Z-9T515-A). Can't believe I still remember all the important 6.0 part numbers on the parts I used to sell quite frequently. You guys are still getting 6.0 diesels coming onto your doorstep? I would've thought for us dealership guys that 6.0 diesels would be old news by now! Now...can you remove a 6.0 diesel turbo from an E-Series in that same ten minutes?
@PowerStrokeTechTalkwARod dude that was fast as shit lol I always get caught up on the y bands. Always easier after someone takes it apart and lines them up right. Good shit my friend 🤙
10 minutes is crazy good, my neighbor lost his turbo on a 1,000 mile road tip and the shop charged him $1,800 labor and $1,800, over $4,000 total for a new Ford turbo in his 05 Excursion... turns out the turbo wasn't even the issue, it was a gas pedal sensor or something like that bx it did the same thing 400 miles later...
Excellent video man. Thanks for sharing. I would have went with a different tune but...excellent video. I'll be doing this on my '04 F-350 next week. Hope it is this painless!! PEACE!
Good work. Like watching a Surgeon. I am going to attempt to change the turbo on my 07 E350 van. Do you know if it’s the same procedure or same turbo? This is my first time mucking about with a big engine and I’m handy with tools. I need to do it myself or I can’t afford to fix it. Any tips or suggestions appreciated.
I work on 6.0s every week and pretty much identical to how I remove them, only I've found I have to take an extra couple min to drain a gallon of coolant to empty degas bottle and remove hose. The whole leaning the degas bottle over still attached trick has bitten me so so many times. They love to break at the plastic connection at the T and being $60 or so to replace, its not worth the time saved.
my f350 in time i have to change mine. thank you so much showing how to do it. now. people are telling me i should trade in my truck. i put so much money into her already. i mean a lot of money. should i trade her for a regular v8 4x4 or keep her and get ready for a new trubo. i know i won't get what i did to her. let me know what you guys think. she is a 2005 f350 4x4 diesel. great video dude.
That’s when everything went perfect I’ve seen back bolt stripped out that’s always fun! First turbo I ever did on 6.0 took me 61/2 hours lol now if everything goes perfect I can pull and replace in 30minutes! But we are talking about a 6.0 powerstroke lol
I would like to ask a question about putting the turbo back on Getting the turbo hook back up to the Y pipe ? Is it hard to line back up? And On a scale 1 to 10 and 10 being very hard . What would you rate the turbo at . I have a 2005 Ford F-250 with the 6.0 I need to change it out .
curious, does fluid actually flow through those hoses connecting to the degas bottle? Or are those hoses just to vent pressure from the oil cooler(?) and intercooler?
Late to the party just found your AWESOME channel. You said 28.5 boost is to high... why us that? I'm getting 28.5 when it needs it. Granted I'm studded so no worries on the head gasket front. 06 engine in early 04 body.
Nice, now show us the quick and easy way to take that third rear bolt out on a 2003-early 2004. I would settle for just that bolt in 10 min. Argh struggling with one right now
OF course, all my bolts out (took me 2 hours, I don't have the cool Millywalkeh's. All hand tools. Now I can't get it pried loose. Mines an '06 F350 FX4, it did have a bracket from the upper hose your didn't have. Now I am worried there's a bolt somewhere else I missed, but I can't see anything. I'm afraid to pry harder and tear something else up... @PowerStrokeTechTalkwARod
