    Thanks a bunch for the video, very helpful. I've never seen those squeeze bags of gear oil before, Great idea! I'll look for those when I go to the parts house.

      I just looked up the specs for the gear oil and found it at my local AutoZone. It was actually cheaper to have it overnight shipped than ship to store for some reason. Glad this video helped.

      Does a 2014 f150 3.7 have a slip differential?

    • @jackharding98
      @jackharding98 2 роки тому

      @@kinazz19 My understanding is that if you have the electric locking rear end, you don't need any limited slip additive

    I ran that stuff for a while. Worked pretty darned well.
    Then, I switched to Amsoil, Severe Gear 75-140.
    Really quieted down my rear differential. Smooth as butter now.
    Good luck!

    I bought the same Valvoline 75W-140 the other day then read my manual and said it called for the “friction modifier” to be added along with diff fluid. So I went back to my local auto parts store where I had everyone puzzled as to what “friction modifier” was and we concluded that it was the limited slip additive. Then after reading the back of the Valvoline packet it says it already had limited slip additive added to it. Sooo do I still need to add the limited slip/friction modifier to the Valvoline diff fluid if it already has it in it??

    • @phathomthis
      @phathomthis  Рік тому

      I would still add it.

      My 2015 Jeep said the same thing, and I noticed the same thing you did on the Valvoline packet, and I did not add it, and have not had any issues. I also had read that adding more could be bad, but not sure if that is factual or not.
      I'm about to do this same service to my Ford F150, I don't plan to add the extra slip additive.

    What about friction modifier additive, because I have a ford f150 2009 5.4 2wd and I’m getting mixed answers I wanna know if I need to add the friction stuff

      Check the axle code on your door sticker and compare it here. It should tell you if it's limited slip or not.
      Limited slip, use the additive.
      Not limited slip, you don't have to, but it doesn't hurt.

      Oh okay yea I just checked and it’s limited slip so I literally got the same oil and limited slip additive, but what about the friction modifer additive

      Look up the code in the door jamb under axle. It will give you ratio and if it's LSD or not.

    That oil contains the additive

    • @phathomthis
      @phathomthis  2 місяці тому

      Yes and no. Let me explain.
      Per Ford/Motorcraft about this specific diff fluid,
      "Note: For a complete drain and refill, some limited-slip axles require addition of Friction Modifier, Part Number XL-3 meeting Ford specification EST-M2C118-A. Refer to Workshop Manual or Owner’s Guide."
      So while some diffs may not need it, others do when doing a drain and fill, which we are doing here. It having some is more for topping off the fluid than a full change.
      That being said, the service manual for these trucks DOES say you need the XL-3 additive for the limited slip differentials in this model of F-150.
      Could you get away without using it?
      Sure.
      Should you?
      Ask yourself this,
      "Is cheaping out on a $7 bottle of fluid once every 150k miles worth gambling your differential?"
