Suggest using Gear oil proof Silicone RTV... regular RTV can dissolve when contacted by Gear Oil ... also let the Silicone RTV cure for a few hours too before adding Gear oil , so as to not contaminate the gear oil
How do you know the size of your differential so you know how much fluid needed, and how do you know whether you have a limited slip differential? Thank you in advance for your answer!
Good job, all the keyboard warriors will never stop. The end of the day you got the job done. Some people say you have to use gear oil RTV. I use whatever RTV is in stock and/or on sale and I've never had a leak. I went against the the grain and used 75w140 in my 2019 f150 that calls for 75w85 I'm guessing b they changed it for fuel mileage reasons and people beat me down on it. I had a surplus of 75w140 amsoil.
Impact gun is a great way to snap bolt heads during installation. Lol. Make sure to point out the gun is on a low setting. Someone is bound to hammer them to oblivion with a 1/2in 🤣
100k is always a good mark according to manual. Personally I enjoy doing the work so I don't go over 60k. You really should change all the fluids if you are getting a truck with a 200k on it. Luckily for you I have plenty of repair videos on this truck for you to check out. Thanks for watching!
I have a question about it, my truck is 2wd the 8.8in differential need the limited slip additive? Or just with the oil it's enough, or on that case you recommend me a good additive for preserve better the differential
You need to have that information. But you can put limited slip additive in a non limited slip application. Heck a lot of gear oil just comes with it in built it. Thanks for watching!
Hi Brian, I own a 2007 F150 5.4L Crew. How do you tell the gear ratio on your rear axle. Also I have 150K on the vehicle when should the rear axle fluid be replaced? Thanks.
So there is 4 ways I can think of right now. You can count the teeth on the ring gear divided by the pinion gear. It is sometimes printed on the ring gear. If your differential tag is still attached it should say it on there. Sometimes if you can find the online Vin decoder it will tell you there. I was lucky enough to still have my new car sticker and it has the 3.73 limited slip differential. You should change it every 100k miles or so. Thanks for watching!
Lots of people just use the gasket. I don't because it almost always leaks. The RTV is there to prevent it from leaking. I just got my rear end built for my 1967 Camaro by a professional differential builder. They didn't use RTV and it leaks like a sieve.
I was wondering about that myself. I have changed my differential fluid before and used only the gasket. I was afraid I would goof up the tube of stuff. The gasket has not leaked and it's time to change it again. I was thinking possibly the reason it leaked on the Camaro is that the housing was not cleaned properly. Just my 2 cents. Jesus bless.
I have a 2004 f150 fx4. So it’s got the 4wd. Do you know what size my rear diff is either the 8.8 or 9.75? Also I don’t know if I need the 4 oz of the additive or 8 oz
You can type your vin into RockAuto and it should tell you. If I had to guess since yours is an FX4 pretty high trim level it is 9.75 and you need 8 oz. Thanks for watching!
Sounds like a misfire. You can attach a scanner after you feel that and see if the computer tracks any misfire but not enough to light a check engine light. Thanks for watching!
paul medard misfire, get a code reader. Figure out which cylinder is misfiring. Replace the coil pack. Clean the throttle body with proper cleaner. And put sea foam in your gas and oil. Should run smooth after.
What gear oil would you recommend for a 2018 f150 with the electronic differential? I was thinking Amsoil or royal purple or even valvoline but all of them contain some friction modifier additive would it be ok?
@@2carpros the plug might be rusted in and require days of soaking with penetrating oil, or you may have get a torch and heat the area, or it may have to be drilled out and use an ez out, or it may have to be drilled and retapped. Any one of these operations could take days for you to acquire the necessary equipment or to allow the penetrant to work. I guess if you're okay with having your car sit in your driveway unable to be used because you already drained the fluid while you work on the removal of the fill plug.......

You’re right. Always make sure the fill plug comes off first
Tip.. use a loose stud inserted in top of the diff to align the lid. then thread it out when the other bolts are in

Yeah you can. I like using both but thats me. Thanks for watching!

Can you just use automotive rtv gasket material without the cloth like gasket?
I have seen others do it. I'd do it in a pinch if I had to but I like the gasket. Thanks for watching

75-140 ...better!
Should I top it off after warming it up? Or is it supposed to seep out when cold
I took it for a test drive about until the transmission warmed up and then it let me add a few more ounces. Figured it couldn’t hurt?
Transmission or diff? Because this video is for a diff. Thanks for watching!
2CarPros for a diff. I just used the transmission getting warm for an example of how long I test drove it

Im thinking impact best for removing then, while it’s empty, stick to hand tools. Better & safer.
Great video.

Until it overflows
I don't get it why, your using silicone,if you installing a new gasket... gasket does the work when you don't have silicone... it's just my opinion.
So it doesn't leak. Check this video out if you are curious ua-cam.com/video/cx9rfHvGe8U/v-deo.html Thanks for watching!

Ford stealership quoted 1000k. A small shop quoted 420. Then another qouted 150. I think 150 is good price.

I waa told it takes 4 quarts mine is spilling over at two
I do the same with my wife's differential on her Opel..😆
