I think at the very end... Hae Sung found closure. He was never rude to Nora during the entire film... but while waiting for the Uber on the final scene, he tells Nora "You are the one who always leaves". I never left". This is absolutely true as Nora leaves him as children to go to Canada and then she leaves him again when reconnected 12 years after to focus on her career. Those words from Hae Sung broke her (literally) when she (once again) becomes a "crybaby" in the arms of Arthur. A second watch is a must on this particular movie to piece everything together. Hae Sung leaves on the Uber without looking back. He knows he can now finally move on back in Seoul after finding closure. She is the one that will now struggle with guilt, regret and sadness. I think this movie is very deep and extraordinary. I hope it wins an Oscar.
I did not feel like she had “guilt and regret” - I think her crying was more about catharsis, unleashing all the pent up energy of that life-long potential, but also finding acceptance of her choices. Even Hae Sung notes that Nora has a stronger connection to John; a real established relationship (eight thousand layers of in-yun) based in their shared experiences, versus the fantasy of possibilities that exists with Sung. This is a movie about emotional maturity.
I just saw this film hours ago and I absolutely loved it! It's the sweetest thing I have ever seen without being saccharine. The relationship between Nora and Hae Sung was so magnetic and their screen chemistry is so organic. The three characters' dilemma is both complex and dynamic. Celine Song created a cinematic masterpiece!
This movie has made me realise alot, even on things it didn't touch. I've been depressed for a long time and i regretted a lot of things i didn't do and the chances i didn't take. I used to wish i made different choices and maybe i would've ended up with the people i failed to create a bond with. Now I understand that it's part of life. It may work, it may not. But that's the beautiful thing about life. Accepting and moving on. Growth.
Such a great movie! My wife literally cried during the movie. It reminded us of our very own love story. We were childhood friends. I had the biggest crush on her. I think i was probably 5-8 years old at the time then we’ve moved to another city before my family migrated to the US. I’ve been searching for her for years through friendster, myspace, etc but she found me on fb in 2015. She was in a relationship at the time and i was at the end of mine. We got married in 2017 and still happily married ❤
That was a brilliant move on Celine's part to keep their worlds separated. You can really feel/see the discomfort and "crazy" curiosity playing on their faces throughout.
The casting was on point, they chose the best actors! Each brought such a different perspective of their personal experiences. It made me cry. Very emotional experience especially when Hae Sung meets Nora again in person. I noticed that the husband was sort of a narrator of her wife’s love childhood story. Soooo many nuances that indicated that Nora never stopped loving Hae Sung, she would even dream in Korean. That part of her, the 12 Nora never died and that was hard to watch because she suppressed it as an adult. Very sad but real. Her husband is such a good guy. Hae Sung never gave up on her because he knew in his heart how she felt. Ugh! Loved it!
The best movie of the Year! Those moments that without even saying a word, are romantic and heart breaking. This movie reminds me not only my first love, but also when I was too young to keep a long distance relationship and ruined it, that regret remains for life time.
Beautiful storytelling & remarkable characterization that is amazingly executed by the actors & director. Wonderful writing. Haven't watched such a beautifully written and executed film in years.
I just watched this movie last night even though i had been avoiding it when i saw it trending as i am still healing from a breakup. I cried at the last scene when Nora cried. Just saw myself in their story and it is just so delicately tender. Thank you for this beautiful interview.
this interview was a joy to watch and has made me so much more excited to watch the film. the questions were beautifully asked and answered by both interviewer and interviewees. this cast seems incredible and i'm so excited to see them in the film together!
As korean immigrant this movie really touched my heart. It really made me think of that bittersweet feeling of letting go of that little korean kid in me.
it was interesting that she loved her husband arthur but that feeling of what if & what could have been with sae jung in a way stayed even after all those years.. when he said that maybe their present life is a past life and their living as lovers in a future life got to me in the past part 🥲
He never resolved her trauma. It was Hae Sung that drove the plot -- if his gf and him did not split, there would be no second part of the movie. I found it very pretentious. If you want to watch a long-lost lover story that's more poignant, check out Architecture 101. Shot from a Korean POV.
Am I the only one who thought this movie was way too slow? The acting, the story, the writing, all were very good. But the moments and scenes with no speaking or staring out car windows or walking down the street, could have been trimmed. And I know the mood of the story isn't one of excitement and action, but surely during the course of people's lives and even in their tenuous interactions, there has to be some livelier "everyday people" kind of moments that would make them laugh and smile more. I thought it was overall a very good movie-- great story, good acting. Just slow.
Extremely pretentious film. The male lead never resolved his trauma and that was used as a symbolism for the female lead's connection to her Korean Heritage. The cinematography was excellent, but I never connected with any of the characters outside of observing the poor communication/decisions they made. ie. Nora nor Hae Sung did not try to compromise after reconnecting online.
This seems like a take from a really bitter person. Don't get me wrong I respect your take but this movie was made in a way that connected with the average human. We experience love, heartbreak, growth. This is the most realistic movie ever. Ending was perfect.
It’s a good film, but is it a great film? I’m not sure. You don’t really see a boy of 12 manly, or any sexual desire at that age. Reconnection after 12 years dropped suddenly without much hints, the next reconnection surge of emotion does not feel rooted in anything other than unsatisfactory love affair for Hae Sung or home sick for Nora. There is no profound tie between the two main leads. At intellectual level it can’t be compared with before sunrise/sunset films.
I think at the very end... Hae Sung found closure. He was never rude to Nora during the entire film... but while waiting for the Uber on the final scene, he tells Nora "You are the one who always leaves". I never left". My husband and I were child hood crushes and he moved away when we were 13. We reconnected via Facebook @ 25 and been married for 9.5 yrs now !
That's an incredible story! Thanks for sharing and for watching.

Movies like this is why I love film. I’m a grown man and cried my eyes out. So much emotion in these two actors and it was beautiful. Bravo!
Couldn't agree more! One of our favorite films of the year.

It's a great film. You're in for a treat.
Interesting choice by the director….separating the actors before the actual filming.
Definitely. Can't recall another director who has done that but it played well on screen! Thanks for watching.
Movie felt kind of uncomfortable, but considering the background of the cast (eg. their real life partners), they are damn perfect.
It's a great cast. Thanks for watching.
im listening to john magaro talking but why teo yoo staring at me haha xD
john magaro deserved an oscar
Agreed. They all do. Thanks for watching.
Teo
