I’m partial to the theory that YG is a false dragon, but the great thing about him is that any of the big theories would be satisfying answers. It’s also quite possible we never get a straight answer too. I’m excited to see how everything goes to shit for Aegon and Jon Con in TWoW, someday… 😅
I like the idea of Daenerys forcing a confession from Illyrio that Aegon is a Blackfyre, and her using that to justify her war - but maybe she uses her typical heavy-handed coercion leaving the confession unreliable, and the readers never get a clear answer at all.
6:31 small nitpick - as soon as the heir or heir apparent has a son, THEY become next in the line of succession. That means that technically as soon as Rhaegar’s son Aegon was born, Viserys was irrelevant. It was only after Aegon was murdered that Viserys was technically in line for the throne again
It doesnt matter. Aerys named Viserys his Heir, therefore passing over Rhaegar and his children. And as Viserys was technically the rightful King, and only knew of Daenerys' existence, then she would be the rightful Queen as sister is closer than nephew
What I find even more interesting and important in the context of Young Griff than "power residing where men think it resides", is that Varys really didn't have any reason to lie. It means he believes Aegon is the best candidate for the Iron Throne, and I think it's a safe bet to believe him. Perfect king being make not by some kind of right, but by elaborate plot including effective upbringing, while legitimate Daenerys becomes her father out of jealousy is just the best answer to the question of rightful king that GRRM could end the series with. I'd also like it if his real identity was never fully confirmed, to strengthen points you mentioned and add that history is written by victors. If he wins, he will be real to chronicles, otherwise not.
@@ciandryl If I recall correctly, he was explaining his reasoning to a dead man, correct me if I'm wrong. You could argue he was lying out of habit at this point, but I don't think it makes sense, especially since he claims only Aegon is well fit to rule, it'd appear he purposefully avoids question of legitimacy.
But of the two, young Griff is the one with only his name to prove he's the right king, he has no experience and doesn't seem right for the role given his temper in Tyrion's chapters. Daenerys is a woman, with less claim to the throne than young Griff, but she is the experienced one, who knows the difficulties of governance. In this light, young Griff would be the tool for GRRM to show that legitimacy isn't everything and it would further underline Varys' “Power resides where men believe it resides”, given that young Griff is just a spoon-fed pawn.
Aegon is definitely a Blackfyre. The Golden Company knew this plot before Jon Connington told them about it. Why would Varys even attempt this plot if Aegon was nobody? He had an extremely cushy and powerful position already. Varys is a Blackfyre, too. Like Egg, he shaves his head to hide his silver blonde hair.
very much reminds me of Perkin Warbeck, who claimed to be Richard, Duke of York (and claimed the throne as Richard IV) but was most likely just a nobody who was trained to act as a Yorkist
I'm in the camp that he's a Blackfire, and he'll die before regaining the throne, and Dany will still take the path of The Mad Queen (history repeats itself in Westeros all the time after all)
Same, she's already going down that path with her visions lost in the dothraaki sea shitting herself, oh and how screwed up everything is in the cities she conquered.
There are no more blackfyres. They went extinct nearly half a century before the current books if not longer. Theirs no men to carry that house on and theirs likely no surviving daughters who could seriously be his parent as they would largely predate his time or not be of serious bf blood.its also silly as theirs no way with that, that a false child would be born the same year as Aegon vi and would be raised by the man who was devoted and in love or deeply close with aegons father. It seems a little far fetched and improbable. The young griff is thus very likely Aegon vi as claimed.
1.If Varys was so determined to put Rhaegar's son on the Throne, why would he prevent Rhaegar from discussing in secret with the High Lords about deposing his father at the Tourney of Harrenhall? 2.Why would the Golden Company support him after supporting House Blackfyre in 4 Rebellions and also breaking their contract(and by consequence their perfect reputation) after having denied Viserys? 3.Why wasn't Rhaenys rescued too? This guy is an imposter to me and his invasion of the Stormlands is the Beginning of the Sixth Blackfyre Rebellion
1. Because Aegon is a king who he can control. If Aegon takes the throne, he owes it to Varys. The reason Aegon is alive is because of Varys. Through Aegon Varys has great influence and power, through Rhaegar, he would have none. 2. The Golden Company was founded by Westerosi Exiles. Even if they worked as sellswords, their main goal was to return home as heroes, placing the rightful kings on the Iron Throne. The Blackfyres are now dead but the GC still has a chance to return to Westeros as heroes placing the rightful king on the throne. Why should they remain loyal to an extinct house? As for not supporting Viserys, what chance did he have of succeeding? Viserys had no other supporters and he clearly wasn't mentally stable. Aegon has the backing of Illyrio, supporters in Westeros and has been groomed from a young age to be the perfect king. He is the last chance the GC has if they wish to return and reclaim their lands as heroes. 3. Rhaenys was a child while Aegon was a babe. It is easier to swap a baby than a child. Also Rhaenys wasn't as important as Aegon. Aegon was the heir to the Iron Throne, Robert would have to kill him. Rhaenys on the other hand could have been sent to the silent sisters or she could have been married to Robert's heir. Aegon was the only guaranteed child of Rhaegar to die if he fell to the hands of the rebels, and the only one who would have been able to return and reclaim the throne.
I too, think it’s too good to be true, Varys would need to have know that Rhaegar lost and Tywin was hostile to throne, all in the span of like 3 weeks, which gives him 3 weeks to find a 1 year old kid or younger, with Valyrian features, during a time with notably small or even no dragon seeds around. To swap with the actual Aegon, it just isn’t realistically feasible. There’s a super small chance he did do it but, why would he? He could have molded Viserys into the perfect Prince if he wanted, Viserys was only 8. So I think Young griff or Faegon is a Boackfyre and Illyrio’s son. But I do hope that Varys and his “where does power reside” question, crumbles in front of him by people finding out Faegon is fake and killing him, ultimately proving Varys wrong. I think this could be possible if Faegon tries to bond with a dragon but it rejects him and kills him
@@jaiaery7917its guarantee that Golden Company and this Pretender will go down in toilet GRRM Will align his Book story with what transpired to Golden Company (Show Counterpart) 😂😂
GRRM had a lot of involvement in the first few years of GOT. I think if YG was important he would have been included in the show. GRRM used history as a basis for plots and characters. YG is a decoy, a metaphor similar to Perkin Warbeck (c. 1474 - 23 November 1499) who was a pretender to the English throne claiming to be Richard of Shrewsbury, Duke of York, second son of Edward IV and one of the so-called "Princes in the Tower".
Aerys disinherited Rhaegar and made Viserys his heir. Dany is Viserys' heir. How then can someone from Rhaegar's line be ahead of Dany? I'd understand if Rhaegar hadn't been disinherited but since he was I'd think his line would no longer have priority. I think it's also important to remember that Dany herself is also a mummer's dragon. She is also a pawn of the Spider and Ilyrio.
Aerys's wishes are irrelevant. Who cares what a mad man wanted? Who inherits the throne relies on two things 1) the actual claim and 2) whether the lords accept it. That's why the Dance of Dragons and the Blackfyre Rebellions happened. That's also why the wisest kings have great councils instead of naming an heir outright.
"Mummer" doesn't mean "pawn". A mummer is a person who performs in a pantomime or traditional seasonal folk play, often wearing a mask or costume. The term can also be used to refer to an actor in general, or more humorously or derogatorily, to describe a bad actor. How would Dany be a mummer?
I doubt that was part of their original plan. Illyrio hinted that he didn't think Daenerys would survive with the Dothraki, which suggests that the original plan was to use both Viserys and Dany as a distraction for Robert to focus on, while they prepared for Aegon's invasion. But everything changed as Dany not only survived but hatched the eggs, which is unimaginable. This completely changed their plan as well as other parameters (Viserys' death, etc.).
