    I think that Miu's Ferris wheel part was Murakami's best writing too.

      Hoping for similar moments in Kafka on the Shore!

    i feel like this isn’t a good first murakami book bc after reading so many of his other books and then reading this book it’s absolutely amazing to me bc i know murakami’s style 😭

    Risk? What is at risk?....Great cut!...A generous and intelligent take.

    I don't re-read books much but I've done so with Sputnik and - just - Wind-Up Bird. While the latter slightly underwhelmed compared to my memory of it, Sputnik resonated just as hard the second time. I'm in thrall of its diaphanous, eerie yet humdrum scenario-building (definitely that than world-building!), and the ambiguity of their resolution.
    Have you read Be With You by Takuji Ichikawa? It's not Murakami by any means but they'd probably be good friends.

    Norwegian Wood was my first Murakami Full read, I tried Kafka On the shore before that and i was a bit turned off by the protagonist, he isn't your cookie cutter murakami protagonist but he is very unlikable (in my opinion) i found my self furiously flipping the pages till i reached the chapters of the 2nd ( way more interesting ) character POV
    Then i moved on to Norwegian Wood and i fell in love, i read it at the age of 17 and it really resonated with me, after that i read Sputnik Sweetheart and it was an interesting change of pace, i didn't mind the fantastical elements, i actually enjoyed them!
    I can't wait for you to read 1Q84, it garnered alot of mixed reviews but Murakami finally writes a complex female protagonist !

      I have trouble with the stock Murakami narrator. Too blasé for me. Glad to hear of another admirer of NW! And thanks for really piquing my interest in 1Q84! A complex female protagonist?! Is she the narrator?! That’s exciting. I am currently taking a long break before continuing with Murakami. Need to sort of clear out and reset. Thanks for your comment!

      @@LeafbyLeaf it is actually third person, she is our main though, i recommend that you go into out without even reading the synopsis.

      Very interest! Third-person AND a female? Are you sure this is Murakami? 😜
      I rarely read much about books. It is more typical that I go in cold. Better effects that way. Just did that with Rulfo’s PEDRO PÁRAMO and I am so glad I had nothing to go on!

    Thank you for your thoughts on this story. I'll have to read Wind-Up Bird next. I found the book a bit monotone, a bit like Some old American thriller writers. Is that just the translation do you think or is that his voice? I enjoyed the ride and it was a very easy to read. I think I noticed a confirmation on the duality of the characters in that scene with the car at the end. I might be wrong though.

    I read this book recently after remembering a college friend that I had one sided feelings for recommended it. Only ~14 years later do I get the level of gut punch that suggestion was 😅

      Amazing how books can establish themselves as sort of axis-points along the timeline of our lives. :)

    Do you think I need to read wind up bird Chronicles before Sputnik sweetheart?.....cause It was my first Murakami book I was confused and kind of all over the place...I guess I didn't get it or he isn't the author for me.

    • @LeafbyLeaf
      @LeafbyLeaf  4 роки тому +6

      Confused and all over the place describes a lot of his fiction. And it’s by design. His stuff is like reading a dream. So far, I’ve really only been impressed with Norwegian Wood. I think reading Wind-Uo Bird first does add a dimension to Sputnik that enhances the reading. With Murakami, you have to be okay with plot holes and unexplained turns and lack of closure. Definitely not for everybody. Hope that helps!

    So this one isn't my favourite, probably my least favourite so far, I didn't find it was fleshed out enough. Currently reading dance dance dance and it's phenomenal so far

      Im also reading through murakamis cannon of work, I've gotten through 7 so far. He is by far the most original author I've ever read personally. I get the feeling that his books are not about a good plot, or even characters... But he creates his own unique quiet aura that can't be challenged

    • @LeafbyLeaf
      @LeafbyLeaf  4 роки тому +4

      You've really hit on it there, I agree. He said as much in his New Yorker interview last year. He gets a glimpse of an idea, does virtually no planning, and sits down lets it unfold with each writing session. Anyone who reads just about any of the books (I've read the first 9 novels) would agree that coherent plots, etc. aren't really his aim. You definitely know when you're reading a Murakami novel.

    I don't know... This is first time im reading murakami and i found it a bit pretentious and uninteresting. The whole idea of changing genres within the novel didn't work for me.
